doom has two axiseses, one is to go forward and the other is to the sides. heigh is not real in doom, it's a hack thats why you cant look up or down too far

            Anonymous

Carmack himself had to step in and confirm it's 3D
Details of implementation don't matter, you can move parallel to the floor and go up on elevators. That's three dimensions already.
Enemy projectiles can also go over you, and enemies can also fly up or down, diagonally, and obviously occupy different positions across the z-axis. That's 3 simulated dimensions already

You can't look up or down but it is reflected in the gameplay along the two other axes

Implementation details. What matters is that I can run under a Cacodemon and not be blocked, but if he lowers himself enough I bump into him. If in the code there are matricial transformations on three axes occurring is of no importance. All games are illusory reality

                Anonymous

You can't run under or over monsters in vanilla doom (infinite height), however projectiles do move in true 3d, and you can be launched upward by archvile explosions

                Anonymous

Yes, but you can run over or under enemies in Heretic (and look down and up), which is basically the Doom engine with tiny modifications.
The idea that Doom isn't "3D" is the kind of silly idea that normalgay that died spread. Basically if something doesn't render a 3D world the way normalgays are used to, they think it's "fake", when you can argue that all 3D rendering is fake in principle.

Game is 3D and has an X, Y, and Z but cheats several calculations so that they only function in 2D. Most important things like player, monsters, and projectiles are fully 3D although monsters have infinite height to reduce complexity of player being directly above or below.

      Anonymous

Added to this. Wolfenstein is 100% 2D. There is no height, everything is on the same plane as the player. Projectiles and monsters do not have height. The game could be a top down shooter and would function identically other than the perspective shift.

All CG 3D is just an illusion of a 3D object on a flat screen. All of it is fake. The brainlets talking about how Doom isn't real 3D are either extremely stupid or extremely autistic. 99.99% of you are in the extremely stupid category. John Carmack gets away with it because he is a fricking autist freak who doesn't live in the same reality as us. John Carmack is making a pointless distinction between how 3D works in Doom and Quake, because he is proud of what he did with Quake and he is proud of the leap in 3D graphics.

It doesn't matter how the engine works. Games are always smoke and mirrors behind the scenes. I don't care that Yoda was a puppet in older Star Wars movies. I don't care that a mirror reflection in a game is just a duplicated model aping your movements. Doom has a ceiling above you. It has height, width, and depth. That's 3D. Don't care about sectors or lack of room over room. The final image and perception are the only things that matter.

All I'm seeing here is 'Doom is 3D because my feelings count'

      Anonymous

Infinitely tall hitboxes are just to enable the aim assist at a low computational cost. You appear to be confused
A medikit's pickup box does not infinitely extend up, for example. You can run off a ledge and go over the medikit midair, not collecting it.

      Anonymous

No, only enemies and it's literally a flag so the player doesn't land on them or vice versa. Cacodemons still need to line up with holes to enter because they have collision boxes.

projectile hitboxes and hitscan rays are not infinitely tall. the only things that act infinitely tall are player/monster collision, monster melee attacks, and explosions

        Anonymous

actually forgot that switches act infinitely tall as well

      Anonymous

The "infinite height" only applies for collisions with the player. All enemies have a 3D hitbox and a cyberdemon won't fit in a room that's too low for him. Doom removed as many calculations as possible so the game could run on pretty much everything. Another example of tjis is when you use a hitscan weapon, the game only calculates hit detection using the hitbox's 2 diagonals instead of 4 sides.

      Anonymous

No, only the collision between players and monsters (and monsters and monsters) is calculated as being "infinitely tall". But everything in game still has a standard 3D cube bounding box for regular collision. So an imp can walk under a doorway that's too short for a cyberdemon. Cacos can move through caco-shaped holes in walls. Projectiles can fly over and under the player/enemies. Etc.

Just because I said hole doesn't mean I was implying that Cacos are round/spherical (I even specified that everything in game has a standard 3D cube bounding box). You can have square holes.

Dwarf Fortress is rendered in 2D. Informally, this is what we call 2D games, because it's the way the game world is represented to the player. However, you can download programs that render the world of Dwarf Fortress in three dimensions (pic related).
Doom is rendered in three dimensions. The height, width and length are clearly shown and the player can navigate this world in real time and see the representation of the three axes dimensions change according to his position.
