No really, I don't get Sephiroth's character in general. He flip/flops between obsessing over Cloud and achieving Godhood via an incredibly ambiguous method as the plot needs it. He's not interesting, but he looked cool when we were 12. In retrospect, the only ominous scene this dude had was murdering President Shinra, a scene in which he wasn't even featured. Everything else just makes me chuckle, especially Nibelheim. Reminds me of Final Fantasy IV's introduction in how absurdly stupid it is.

It’s weird because he’s obviously a Griffith analogue but Griffith went crazy because he was so scared that the individuals he loved like Guts (and to a lesser degree, Casca) would make him lose focus and abandon his ambitions (his Dream).
Sephiroth and Cloud are obviously molded from the Griffith and Guts dynamic but fused with JRPG dynamics and tropes. Sephiroth is less of an ambitious idealist and more of a black-and-white morality Hero(tm) who flips allegiances at the drop of a hat because of new information he gets about who he thinks he is (a cetra) and who that makes his enemies (humanity). We basically never really see the real Sephiroth after Cloud chucks him into the life stream because we can never reliably be sure who Cloud is seeing fly around or show up places.
In Compilation/Remake, they started pandering to the fandom version (or one of them) of Sephiroth and Cloud and using fan-reaction as their primary basis for how they write characters, even if that ends up making them make no fricking sense

I get the whole dramatic effect aspect and I'm all for it, but at the end of the day this is a game with over 10 hours of dialogue/cutscenes. How there is anything left ambiguous, any room for maybe, is baffling to me. Also I'm pretty sure it has the opposite effect. The Lifestream mindbreaks Cloud, ironically. Aerith's death is what eventually inspires Cloud and the entire party to go SSJ2 and defeat Sephiroth.
Maybe Sephiroth is one way, maybe another way, maybe both? Who knows. The way he's portrayed is however the plot needs him to be. All just to tell Cloud's story, which is... ?

I think SQuaresoft was a bit too inspired by Evangelion and it shows.
I'm glad the end product is still mostly coherent yet clouded (heh) with mystique
Basically, initially Cloud idolized Sephiroth because he was this incredibly powerful elite Soldier, something that Cloud also wanted to be.
While he was never actually chosen for the Soldier program, he did luck out by getting placed in same unit as his idol. But during the assignment, he befriends Zack, who succeeded in what Cloud failed, becoming a Soldier despite having similarly humble background.
Next part is kind of weird. But during their assignment on Nibelheim, Sephiroth finds out the true origin of Soldiers, that they all have genes of alien life-form Jenova inside them. As he learns more and more about what went into the Soldier program, he eventually insane and murders the whole town. What results is Zack first taking on Sephiroth, but failing. Cloud manages to take Seph out with a sneak attack, but both he and Zack fall down into the reactor, and Cloud gets a dose of Jenova cells.
Due to being so close to Zack when this happened, he actually adapted his memories, thinking that he experienced those things with Seph. Doesn't help that as Zack escapes with Cloud, he actually dies, so there's nobody tell Cloud whose memories he actually has.
...But yeah, what also happens with Jenova cells is that they all seek to unite again. So through course of FFVII, Cloud thinks he is chasing after Seph because he thinks he wants to make things right and kill that bastard, but it's actually Jenova cells inside him that are compelling him to seek him out.
tldr; Cloud's brain got fricked to point of being moronic.
I do actually like story of original FFVII, since it does make, and there's not too many insane leaps.
Just as a note, they didn't fall in the mako, only Sephiroth did (and that's how he ended on the northern crater)
Zack and Cloud especially got experimented by Hojo. That's why Cloud has Jenova cells, which grunts usually don't have (only first classers like Zack do), and that's where the brain frickery comes from.

Yeah the poor fellow gets mindbroken hard, he was desperate for recognition because he fricked up while enlisted in Shinra and didn't make it anywhere.
It's funny because the character mostly portrayed as an “emo, insufferable, stoic cold dude” is actually a nerdy dork. And he only becomes a stud after he recovers from the mako poisoning with the help of tifa and understands that his actions are what made him into a leader in the eyes of his friends, instead of letting himself get pulled down by his past shortcomings.

They don't have the PS2 dev kits to be able to pull off that undertaking. They don't have snapshots of previous patches, and XI was built on spaghetti code that would make even XIV 1.0's blush, and that is not even including the playonline integration, which is woven into XI.
If they could remove playonline, they would, because they know how it's the game's biggest roadblock to attracting new players.
And all that work for what? Attracting the 35+ year olds that used to play and somehow still enough free time, maybe a few zoomers, and Ninja.

Legacy server for FFXI would have made sense 5 years ago when other MMOs were doing it too, but it doesn't now. And yes, there's no point in releasing DQX in the west 11 years after its release, they're better off just localizing the offline versions.
I think enough people want a classic MMO experience to justify the localization of X. Not the development of it or anything, but that's already done. Also, I don't want the chibi version, I dislike that style.
It's a business decision in case of FFXIV. They allocate a certain budget to FFXIV because they also expect a certain amount of profits back. They don't see the worth in increasing the budget and risking lower profits in return.

MMO market is not that big and they're already plenty monetized - microtransactions and a sub, which very few games nowadays have.
For each extra dollar they spend on MMOs they need to make a dollar back, or they're losing money. If they double what they spend on XIV every player needs to either double their spend, or they need to double the playerbase while keeping the average spend same or higher.
You can't just keep pouring money into something expecting a higher return for it. This is why all their other games kept having "disappointing" sales - they spent way too fricking much on each, so they needed insane sales to cover that

That's the problem. None of the 2 FF games are anything similar except direct sequels. Even they are different in some areas such as FF13 and 13-2, 13 had 6 characters and 13-2 had 2 characters with 1 pokemon slot.
They have a very profitable MMO (XIV), a few well-performing gachas and I've heard they have their hands in some other shit like manga and a bit of publishing.
I literally do not know a single person who has a PS5. Releasing titles locked to that platform is massively limiting their potential install base. The only reason I haven't bought FFXVI, for example, is that it's not on PC yet.

Lol i remember when forspoken was release i searched PT-BR twitter to see what people were talking about and there were dozens of streamers with 100-200 followers that got keys for the game, their products are so garbage nowadays that they five it for free.
I think I only know two people who have a PS5. One never plays it and the only probably just used it for Hogwarts Legacy. I feel like a lot of people bought one to have it or that games would have came out eventually.

12 months is a huge amount of time in game development terms. No one's buying a PS5 for exclusives any more. They buy it for Call Of Duty, FIFA and Fortnite. And Sony's games cost over $300 million to make and don't make any money. Even if Spider-Man 2 sells the same as the first game, it will make less money than the first game. That's an absolute disaster.
Multiple exclusives like Rebirth flopping is because Sony's doing an awful job trying to convince people to buy the exclusives instead of spending on those "Black hole" games like COD, FIFA and Fortnite. They hardly advertised Rebirth and let Square Enix shoulder all the PR for it. It is Sony's fault why it flopped.
Sony got the casual market and the casual market doesn't play anything that isn't an iterative, yearly franchise or a live service game. A fricking disaterous decision. Honestly 1.X had a lot going for it at it's core that I like, but it had like 5 MSQ missions and 2 dungeons. FFVII is a fairly average JRPG in terms of length. The original story takes 25-30hrs on a first playthrough if you don't do the extra content.
Nobody needed midgard to be padded with fillers and last for 50hours, nobody.
What you're not getting is that 7 is full of many different locales and environments. They pulled it off because they just use pre-rendered backgrounds.
In a full 3D Remake you have to model every asset. And then the city of Midgar, this super dense location with unique assets, has nothing in common with a place like Nibelheim.
There's a reason the FF games dropped overworlds the same time they started moving away from pre-rendererd.
Rebirth is the first FF in a long time that actually feels fully realized.

Nomura is the only one of the key 4 that wanted to keep the story as close to the original as possible. Nojima and Kitase, specifically Kitase, are the ones that wanted to add all the weird compilation shit into it and turn it into a weird meta narrative that require you to read all of Kitases shitty side novels and novellas and stories to understand what the frick is happening. Those are the original files, just uncompressed. The PS1 version is the version that uses the low quality files.
You had to have the right sound card (Yamaha XG) in order for them to play properly, a common problem with PC games in the 80s/90s.
You stylize the scale. The world doesn't need to have MMO scale. Why would it.
A world map with downscaled locations (LIKE THEY USED TO) would do the job perfectly fine. But noooo, everything has to be 1:1!
Don't try to reinvent the wheel. There is a lot you can do to expand on the game even if the gameplay remains ATB or the camera remains fixed
Update the models and give them more expressions and animations, even if the style is still "chibi" or "anime" this way you can have better looking cutscenes
Add more scenes and more character interactions. In the original most of the times only the characters in the party would speak or appear in the story (the most obvious one is Aerith's death where the only ones that care are Cloud and whoever is in the party at that moment), make it so everyone gets their chance to say something. Make Yuffie and Vincent not optional so you can have them appear when needed
Make a new translation, and add more languages too while you're at it. The original is filled with typos or non sensical parts
Less loading screens or more unified areas, but keep the world map and don't turn every original game area in a 2 hour slog
Voice acting? New bosses? Additional side quests? New dungeons? New summons? FF I to VI got them in the GBA and DS days so do something similar

fixed angles will always have charm to it aswell because you can really focus on the parts you want the player to see and don't have to spend 10 years fotographing rocks to make every pebble look realistic.
or go for a more stylized approach like Kingdom Hearts (or FF9 style but the game itself is fixed camera) which also handled 3D without issue.

I feel bad for KH. The PS2 games still hold up well and from the initial KH3 reveal it looks like they were trying to retain some of that style, but I guess since they had to go more towards CGI Disney properties they had to have Sora adapt a style closer to something that matched most of the game. Top Sora looks great here but he would look out of place looking like that in a Toy Story world, so I get why he had to change.
And now that seems to happening all over again with KH4. Sora is adapting to an even more realistic style because I assume there will be a larger focus on live action properties this time around. Basically what I'm getting at is if Disney were still doing hand drawn stuff, KH might have been allowed to keep its own distinct style rather than chase realism, which is a darn shame.
KH3 (outside of a few specific areas) is genuinely one of the best looking stylized games on the market and legitimately looks like you're playing a pixar film.

Cloud doesn't believe Sephiroth is chasing him. His group follows Sephiroth (the Jenova impersonation remote controlled by Sephiroth from the northern crater) to put a stop to his plans, and they do that on their own volition, but it's not some kind of plot gotcha or anything.
What mindfricks Cloud are the Sephiroth clones controlling his brain due to the cells. Sephiroth clones acts omniously aroud him because he knows that Cloud doesn't remember shit and they can toggle him to be under his control whenever he wants (as displayed by the Black materia delivery, or the multiple scenes when he's about to kill Aerith)
It’s weird because he’s obviously a Griffith analogue but Griffith went crazy because he was so scared that the individuals he loved like Guts (and to a lesser degree, Casca) would make him lose focus and abandon his ambitions (his Dream).
Sephiroth and Cloud are obviously molded from the Griffith and Guts dynamic but fused with JRPG dynamics and tropes. Sephiroth is less of an ambitious idealist and more of a black-and-white morality Hero(tm) who flips allegiances at the drop of a hat because of new information he gets about who he thinks he is (a cetra) and who that makes his enemies (humanity). We basically never really see the real Sephiroth after Cloud chucks him into the life stream because we can never reliably be sure who Cloud is seeing fly around or show up places.
In Compilation/Remake, they started pandering to the fandom version (or one of them) of Sephiroth and Cloud and using fan-reaction as their primary basis for how they write characters, even if that ends up making them make no fricking sense

I get the whole dramatic effect aspect and I'm all for it, but at the end of the day this is a game with over 10 hours of dialogue/cutscenes. How there is anything left ambiguous, any room for maybe, is baffling to me. Also I'm pretty sure it has the opposite effect. The Lifestream mindbreaks Cloud, ironically. Aerith's death is what eventually inspires Cloud and the entire party to go SSJ2 and defeat Sephiroth.

Basically, initially Cloud idolized Sephiroth because he was this incredibly powerful elite Soldier, something that Cloud also wanted to be.
While he was never actually chosen for the Soldier program, he did luck out by getting placed in same unit as his idol. But during the assignment, he befriends Zack, who succeeded in what Cloud failed, becoming a Soldier despite having similarly humble background.
Next part is kind of weird. But during their assignment on Nibelheim, Sephiroth finds out the true origin of Soldiers, that they all have genes of alien life-form Jenova inside them. As he learns more and more about what went into the Soldier program, he eventually insane and murders the whole town. What results is Zack first taking on Sephiroth, but failing. Cloud manages to take Seph out with a sneak attack, but both he and Zack fall down into the reactor, and Cloud gets a dose of Jenova cells.
Due to being so close to Zack when this happened, he actually adapted his memories, thinking that he experienced those things with Seph. Doesn't help that as Zack escapes with Cloud, he actually dies, so there's nobody tell Cloud whose memories he actually has.
...But yeah, what also happens with Jenova cells is that they all seek to unite again. So through course of FFVII, Cloud thinks he is chasing after Seph because he thinks he wants to make things right and kill that bastard, but it's actually Jenova cells inside him that are compelling him to seek him out.
tldr; Cloud's brain got fricked to point of being moronic.
I do actually like story of original FFVII, since it does make, and there's not too many insane leaps.

It's funny because the character mostly portrayed as an “emo, insufferable, stoic cold dude” is actually a nerdy dork. Such projects would be nowhere near finished, so you either have to pay all those developers for another year to work on something you don't think will make money, or cut your losses and set them to work on pumping out more nostalgiabait from when your company was good.

People forget that SE were also pretty sheepish about the episodic nature of Remake before it released. Not as tight-lipped as they were about it actually being a parallel universe sequel, but enough to still catch a bunch of people off-guard.
No one's buying a PS5 for exclusives any more. They buy it for Call Of Duty, FIFA and Fortnite. And Sony's games cost over $300 million to make and don't make any money. Even if Spider-Man 2 sells the same as the first game, it will make less money than the first game. That's an absolute disaster.
Multiple exclusives like Rebirth flopping is because Sony's doing an awful job trying to convince people to buy the exclusives instead of spending on those "Black hole" games like COD, FIFA and Fortnite. They hardly advertised Rebirth and let Square Enix shoulder all the PR for it. It is Sony's fault why it flopped.
Sony got the casual market and the casual market doesn't play anything that isn't an iterative, yearly franchise or a live service game. A fricking disaterous decision. Honestly 1.X had a lot going for it at it's core that I like, but it had like 5 MSQ missions and 2 dungeons. It was insane how barebones it was, but expanded upon and developed, it would have been much more to my taste than ARR and certainly more than the game as it exists today.
1.x had a lot of problems that even an extra year or two would not have fixed. The biggest one was Tanaka himself.

FFVII is a fairly average JRPG in terms of length. The original story takes 25-30hrs on a first playthrough if you don't do the extra content.

What you're not getting is that 7 is full of many different locales and environments. They pulled it off because they just use pre-rendered backgrounds.
In a full 3D Remake you have to model every asset. And then the city of Midgar, this super dense location with unique assets, has nothing in common with a place like Nibelheim.
There's a reason the FF games dropped overworlds the same time they started moving away from pre-rendererd.

Nojima and Kitase, specifically Kitase, are the ones that wanted to add all the weird compilation shit into it and turn it into a weird meta narrative that require you to read all of Kitases shitty side novels and novellas and stories to understand what the frick is happening. Nomura wanted to expand the game (wall market is the perfect example), not change the story drastically.

Those are the original files, just uncompressed. The PS1 version is the version that uses the low quality files.

Update the models and give them more expressions and animations, even if the style is still "chibi" or "anime" this way you can have better looking cutscenes
Add more scenes and more character interactions. In the original most of the times only the characters in the party would speak or appear in the story (the most obvious one is Aerith's death where the only ones that care are Cloud and whoever is in the party at that moment), make it so everyone gets their chance to say something. Make Yuffie and Vincent not optional so you can have them appear when needed
Make a new translation, and add more languages too while you're at it. The original is filled with typos or non sensical parts
Less loading screens or more unified areas, but keep the world map and don't turn every original game area in a 2 hour slog
Voice acting? New bosses? Additional side quests? New dungeons? New summons? FF I to VI got them in the GBA and DS days so do something similar

fixed angles will always have charm to it aswell because you can really focus on the parts you want the player to see and don't have to spend 10 years fotographing rocks to make every pebble look realistic.
or go for a more stylized approach like Kingdom Hearts (or FF9 style but the game itself is fixed camera) which also handled 3D without issue.

I feel bad for KH. The PS2 games still hold up well and from the initial KH3 reveal it looks like they were trying to retain some of that style, but I guess since they had to go more towards CGI Disney properties they had to have Sora adapt a style closer to something that matched most of the game. Top Sora looks great here but he would look out of place looking like that in a Toy Story world, so I get why he had to change.
And now that seems to happening all over again with KH4. Sora is adapting to an even more realistic style because I assume there will be a larger focus on live action properties this time around. Basically what I'm getting at is if Disney were still doing hand drawn stuff, KH might have been allowed to keep its own distinct style rather than chase realism, which is a darn shame.
KH3 (outside of a few specific areas) is genuinely one of the best looking stylized games on the market and legitimately looks like you're playing a pixar film.

Seeing Andy's room being generated in real time on a PS4 look so close to the original film, which took hundreds of hours rendered by server farms in the 90s really puts into perspective how far along we've come.

For them, they're just one smaller part of the overall story that they're being presented with for the first time, so they take it all in stride.
We see shit like Glenn Lodbrok popping up or there being a massive Avalanche that was only hinted at in the original, or there being a full on Wutai/Shinra war, and think "well frick, this is massively different from the original, glad I have all the context for whats happening by playing Ever Crisis and Before Crisis so I know who Glenn is and I know who Sarruf is".
