ah yes, dumbed down easy games. I'm sure that this game is made for the people who actually want agency in their games!

You're average person is a complete moron when it comes to games. They just want to feel like they accomplished something without actually putting in any work or effort. I wouldn't have an issue with it if they catered to both audiences but there are more morons so it's only natural that they get the attention.

Do you know what agency is in video games?
If you can change your hair style you have agency. If you can replace a faction leader you have agency. If you can decorate your house you have agency.

Learn what words mean before you use them.

        Anonymous

I know what it means, and I used it wrong but the point still stands. you're right but why not play sims if you care about changing your hair and decorate your house
I was talking about agency in a broader way like actually having to interact and pay attention to things (agency over your actions) vs the game just plays itself (no agency since it doesnt matter anyways)

Adding a bunch of busywork survival mechanics doesn't make space combat or the procgen planets any more interesting though. Having to eat or take a sippy from your trusty canteen every so often doesn't make up for the lack of worthwhile content to explore.

skill issue. I took on 3+ ships that were higher level than me in the starting ship with zero upgrades. That experience was probably the worst part for me. it meant upgrading my ship was pointless outside of adding more storage space.

The same game that does not run at 1080p on 4x series cards.
The moronic swedes made a game that looks much better and runs better, Bethesda has no excuse, especially when their game looks like it's from 5 years ago.

The game is unoptimized and also requires a good cpu that's why so many people with 4xxx but an older cpu struggle. You need both. Not defending bethesda since the end result looks mediocre but the gpu alone won't be enough if you're looking to play this in decent conditions.

It's absurd to me that there are players on PC who find this acceptable even if their CPU is able to outpace the game's demands. It's such a poorly-made game.

It's weird how they made the smartest enemy AI we've seen in video games in decades and they just turned it off and made them as dumb as normal ones we see in every video game. Good thing mods turn them on again.

      Anonymous

Did mods really just turn on good AI that was already present?

I remember the hype about Oblivion where the radiant AI was so advanced npcs would have all these interpersonal relationships and would work for food and invent their own automobiles made out of cabbages.
But then when we got to play the game the radiant AI was moronic and extremely simple, and the excuse was
      >Uhhh yeah it was actually TOO advanced so we had to turn it off

        Anonymous

Enemy AI actually does things like flank, retreat when outgunned, snipe and support each other when you're targetting one of them, try to suppress fire in the direction you were at, melee units sneak behind you, regroup at chokepoints and more if you turn it back on with the improved enemy AI mod. It's really some of the best AI i've seen in a video game in a long time.

Yeah I remember I was sniping an enemy and lowered their health to the point they got incapacitated to the ground and they slowly and desperately crawled away behind cover and hid. But usually when you’re close and they’re in their downed state they don’t move and just accept their fate. It’s actually good when they don’t have like a 30 second long reaction time for some reason

                >did RDR2 even have enemy AI that reacted to you?
I didn't play it, but I would assume as much. The AI reacts to you in Starfield, too, it just reacts to you as if it just ate a bunch of Mexican food and railed some ketamine.

Okay so we're at a stalemate to determine how good Stanfield's AI is because nobody played RDR2, it's somewhere around RDR2 and mighty be better, which has huge implications because RDR2 was the only half decent shooter released in the latter half of the 2010's

So the point you're trying to make here, if I follow correctly, is that it's good that Starfield is bad because other games are also bad or worse?

Oblivion AI was pretty good in its day, they all had their own schedule, property, places to sleep, changed into different outfits. Would put their armor in chest before they slept. The biggest problems was the voice acting, that’s unrelated. They had to shut some stuff off, because they kept killing eachother because some NPCs could find food so they would steal it.

          Anonymous

I don't care how much you claim to have removed, Todd. I'm calling bullshit that NPCs would practice archery in their home at night, self-evaluate their performance during practice, change their mood and drink a potion to try again and feel better, and then paralyze their dog because it woke them up by barking.

          >These NPCs are not scripted.

        Interesting.

It kind of reinforces my current belief that Bethesda is sick in the head. If you had good enemy AI like that then you could pivot into it and provide more equipment, teammates and strategies you have to use to overcome it.
But instead they just turn it off.

Likewise if you had the game basically finished 9 months ago you could have used that time to actually play it and recognise it's just a loading screen simulator and then use the time to integrate the separate game elements into the same experience.
But instead they just fixed some bugs, supposedly.

Bethesda wants to use the medium to tell a story.
Whether you like that story or not is your own hang-up.
There's a reason choose your own adventure books aren't highly praised in the fiction book-reading community.

One of the things I like about starfield is how backgrounded the main story is. What Bethesda does is tell the story of a world, and given the slim pickings its at least nice to have a new space game to play

STALKER devs made the same claim iirc, some shit like "we invented ultra-intelligent sentient AI but had to turn it off because random NPCs kept finishing the game and triggering the ending before the player, trust us bro". It was just a common marketing meme back then

      Anonymous

That's more common than you think. Here's an old story from a game dev:

      >The AI team worked hard with the level design team to come up with algorithms for the AI to figure out the best paths, the optimum places to lay down covering fire, where to come at the player and so on and so forth. The level design would dictate the AI tactics. It was going to be great.

      >Players hated it.

      >Players didn’t always see the bad guys doing the flanking. In fact, most of the time, they were so caught up shooting at the bad guy acting as bait that they completely ignored the other guys sneaking around to bust a cap in their asses. When the other guys finally appeared and started shooting at the player from their new position, the players complained about how the stupid game was cheating by spawning bad guys behind/flanking them.
      >In order to combat this “unfair spawning behavior”, players would then tactically withdraw (run away) until they were in narrow hallways where the AI could not flank. There, the players could then pick off the AI at their leisure one by one, since they had nowhere to go.
      >Because this is the only tactic that worked well consistently, the players complained that the AI was dumb for just running in and getting shot while they stayed in relative safety.

      >We tried a few things to make it better. We recorded voice-over audio of thugs basically spelling out exactly what it was they were doing. The bait would shout “COVERING FIRE” as he did so, the other guys would yell things like “I’LL GET HIM FROM THIS SIDE!” as they moved. The bad guys would all periodically shout “RELOADING!” when they were supposed to stop firing and give the player a chance to shoot back with impunity. It didn’t work. Most players still tunnel visioned in on the bait like tween girls on Edward Cullen. In the end, the AI team hastily cobbled together a second AI type which would rush the player in a suicide charge just for some variety.

Those things just aren't fun. Getting one shot at point blank with a double barrel with no time to react isn't fun. Walking into an area and getting rekt with no time to react because they were waiting for you isn't fun.

Everyone says they want good a.i and then piss and shit themselves when actually confortned by it.

            >Those things just aren't fun.
            Yeah, that's what I meant.
There are all these complicated systems but when you get down to it the player experience is no different from just spawning enemies behind you because that's all you see.
The player doesn't witness these complex systems so they might as well not exist, I'd call that an overly complicated system with bad results.
I'm not sure how much it helps when the enemies shout what they're about to do, but in my opinion that's already kind of conflicting with their desire to make them smart? They're not very smart if they're shouting their strategies to you in the first place, so at that point just program them in ways that are interesting to engage with mechanically rather than just "smart".

Yeah and remember for 20 years people were saying “where’s the ladders Todd” and when they added ladders in starfield no one liked using them. Gotcha for what? Ladders have always been pointless because stairs are almost always a more useful easier to implement and faster method. The only reason they add ladders is because ship are these really tight spaces where a staircase wouldn’t work. Ladders fricking suck in pretty much every game. It’s baffling why people were begging for it then again you see anyone talk about creation engine and you see how clueless and moronic they truly are

Bullshit, homosexuals were still going on and on about ladders even after we knew Starfield would have jetpacks. The majority of criticisms you see about Bethesda stuff is the most brainless surface level bullshit that can be lifted from Ganker or twitter because most doomsayers don't play the games they complain about so they never see actual issues the games have, such as the player being effectively forced to invest in the research tree due to how gear upgrades work, the mission boards being a waste of time, or outpost containers being comically small.

Yeah it’s painfully annoying how easy it is to tell people who have lame meme complaints and real complaints when it comes to the game’s design. I should never see a location or dungeon repeat in this game, ever. Why have things like merchants been removed from outposts or someway to quickly sell excess materials from my outpost. Why can’t I control how doors and ladders are placed in my shit. Why isn’t there a way to quickly search a particular system or planet or at least favorite one. Now I have to play Where’s Waldo with them. Etc.

Okay, what did you do when fallout 4 had underwater. Nothing, it was pointless. Having water itself can set up fun situations but underwater content is meaningless outside of a fish trying to kill you. The total amount of interesting underwater content in Bethesda titles wouldn’t even amount to an hour of playtime

You are beyond moronic. Like, braindead level of moronation. Your entire argument is saying that there is nothing to do in the water, therefore, is fine that there is no swimming in the exploration game. Instead of, you know, having things to do underwater? It becomes a frivolous feature and morons like you harp on it with meaningless reward to it. Would it be cool, no shit so would a million other thing they could add. Then when you start listing out things that starfield needs to be a better more enjoyable game, underwater shit starts to go down the list hard. Shit like breath of the wild doesn’t have underwater sequences. And when they made TotK to expand upon its systems they still didn’t add underwater shit in a game that’s also about exploring.

Like add alien life, plants, minerals, bases? Sounds familiar, sounds like the same shit you do on the surface. This shit isn’t subnautica. Games like cyberpunk, GTAV, let you go underwater and what is there? Nothing. Most open world games don’t even let you go underwater. You’re a moron to think this is some kind of priority, when there’s so much more attention that needs to be paid to the surface and space sections.

                >when there’s so much more attention that needs to be paid to the surface and space sections.
That would imply that attention was paid in these areas of the game, and we can all clearly see that not much has been given.

You're so adamant about how there's nothing to find out underwater, when the same can easily be said in the multitude of planets you can land on in Starfield. They're all nothingburgers.

                Anonymous

No shit, Sherlock that’s why the underwater point is so stupid. You need to understand the term “priority”. You’d get the same shit you see on the surface if they let you go underwater in starfield. Most games can barely make a compelling surface level open world. Underwater isn’t important and a pointless criticism. Starfield is heavily suffering from interesting space and surface content, adding underwater won’t add shit, people will just say that the underwater is boring.

Explore what, why don’t you like the exploration that’s in starfield? There’s a lot of it. It’s because it’s not compelling. It’s cool to see some of the planets at first but it’s not compelling because there needs to be interesting content. Underwater may be cool at first but it’s not compelling after the first few minutes because there’s nothing there. You have to populate it with good shit first or your idea of “add underwater” is pointless. You’re just going to see coral and rocks

In essence Starfield is a total conversion mod for Morrowind.

It absolutely boggles the almonds that they didnt go for a new engine. I just cant even begin to imagine the insane amount of hacks the developers had to make in the ancient game engine.

Try thinking for yourself for once, there’s nothing wrong with the “engine” and you don’t even understand what one really is. You’re just recycling twitter opinions on Ganker as if it’s your own. If you have a functional PC the game runs perfect has richer textures than any other open world game. The people here posting low res screenshots are not what the game really looks like on a good monitor and when you add in the amazing sound production it makes for a great experience in some scenes. Ignoring the “engine” though the real problems with this game are that it’s boring, uninspired. The engine was the least of the problems.

Alright my dudes, a boomer and have enjoyed games off and on since the 80s. I don’t autistically follow these game companies and their employees like you do, as if like this Tim guy or whatever is some kpop idol. I looked up Bethesda and their games. Dishonored 1 was pretty good, Dishonored 2 sucked, some Wolfenstein games were ok, all that dungeon crap elderwind is extremely homo, every fallout was very bad and I quit each one within 2 hours. Anyways my POINT to you aspie kids is that please stop whining and crapping up this board for a game that was obviously going to suck after a history of bad games. I had never heard of Starfield until I saw a free code in my new GPU box, I played it for 100 hours and got bored and quit but it was far, FAR better than any other Bethesda game. It was polished like he said and I had zero bugs and it ran just fine at 50-70+ fps in 4k. Most new games have a lot of issues on release but not Starfield. Obviously I like other games much more like Dark Souls 2, Far Cry 3, NBA2K ‘06, etc. But this was undeniably a decent game to pass the time if you ignore the woke characters and uninspired world. Not worth $70 but still not as bad as you morons whine about.

I was seriousposting, but I understand that seeing a grain of truth on this awful board is seen as trolling because you’re so used to canned meme comments from zoomers that have never had an honest human interaction and can only afford to play two major game releases a year that vloggers tell them to buy. They will never know how great the economy and human interaction was in early 00’s when you get offered 10 jobs after college and buying an Xbox and jaggermeister with a stack of games to celebrate. Then game a little, go to the bar without a smartphone, and dozens of women a night will actually listen and talk to you and find you interesting because they haven’t been manipulated by social media. Zoomers will never know what it’s like to have a girl’s eyes light up so much by being yourself and saying the simplest honest concepts to them, giving you FULL attention. They’ll never know what it’s like to be young man in a booming economy that arms you with this zest for like so you walk around feeling like you’re this inspiring, interesting force to people. All they know now is college classes from home and sending 100 copy/pasted paragraphs to girls on tinder in the hopes of getting the last scrap of sex left in their city. They need to go outside, sit on a park bench, and read some 19th century Russian novels and try and transcend this hell we are living in. It’s over.

Correct, if you take your social media preconceptions and play the game while forming your own thoughts you’d see it’s just a regular shooter game and that’s how you play it. You are so caught up in social media that you were told it’s this groundbreaking game that you should pay $70 for and it’ll change your life. Recalibrate your expectations and it’s an ok game. These games will not blow you away like they did when you were younger, you’re just caught up in specs and memes now. I got a free code, enjoyed myself for a bit, and will go back to living my life. If you keep falling into the scam that corporations are going to create some media for you to consume that will make you happy then you never had a chance.

Your shitty games can look better and work better mechanically but they will never have the soul that Oblivion did.

              you love to see it

Starfield’s biggest flaw are things you wouldn’t give to outsourced Indians like writing and main quest design.

main story quest/ng+ is trash that much is true. The side quests are okay. Some are better than others of course. I would put the games performance and lack of options without heavy modification of ini files or the like to be of the utmost importance. The 30fps cap to the struggles at running what limited options are available in vanilla at 1080p seem big. The cost of the game coupled with performance limitations and fidelity seem like a big weakness to me again without heavy modification which isn't possible on Xcucks.

I think Berhesda and Todd's biggest problem is that he like the idea of scale, and he's in a position where he can make things as big as he wants, but there's noone to reign him in. Emil and Pete are idiots that stuck around because they're Todd's pals, and have their own issues besides, so Bethesda almost ends up like an indie studio where three friends have noone to reign in their worst ideas, except they have AA/AAA budgets to work with.

all they have to do for es6 is not hire pajeet coders and keep women and their simps out of the writing room while looking outside of inhouse for writers, you could literally just hire a writer to do 1 singular side quest but make it engaging. Dont hire young writers, only use writers that wrote in the PS2 xbox era, the writing room should look like bohemian grove

If I saw this guy on the street I would take the opportunity to insult him to his face for releasing this game.
It's a bad enough game that I think the fact that consumers think it's acceptable is a loss for the entire video game industry and basically a guarantee that AAA of the future will only get worse. It's genuinely that bad.

I'm not being very serious in the first line, but I really mean what I say in the latter half of that post. I find it very worrying that what is marketed as a role-playing game from a developer of Bethesda's renown has such poor writing and gameplay, and I find it outright insulting that the game performs so poorly on PC despite Todd's insistence to the contrary.
They sold this game for $100 to some people.

Nope, it won't. One of the most catastropic AAA launches in video game history, this engine and everything about Starfield will be completely scrapped. ES6 uncertain, possibly cancelled as well or pushed 10 years ahead. Next game will be Fallout, 100%, new bought engine, heavy PR and heavy original Bethesda vibe.

Microsoft pays companies, even their own, per hours spent on their game via gamepass. So they need to go for mass appeal to make money. They are making bank off the loading screens, the grindy nature of perks, the lack of land vehicles, the 1000 planets with nothing on them that people will check anyway and the ng+10 bullshit.

Stanfield is a gamepass game, and future titles will be made with the same formula to keep each individual player on them as long as possible. Tight focused experiences are going to be a thing of the past on Xbox if games are made explicitly for GP and nothing else.

...and they spent that 9 months doing what exactly? The game is an unoptimized glitchy pile of shit. The game has severe framerate drops, laggy menus, loading screens out the ass, texture pop-in, NO brightness options, janky ship builder, etcetera.
