First I've heard of this. What I'd always heard was Trials of Mana literally wouldn't fit on the cart with an English script. From what I know about SMRPG, Miyamoto worked pretty closely with the team. It was his idea for the characters to use their familiar abilities like jumps and hammers--Squaresoft's idea was for them all to have swords.
If they had not wanted to do 3d sprites they would have not bothered at all for this art style. You think of it as if every limitation has to be some absence to what it could have been. Do you believe music was randomly good as well back then just because? No those frickers stayed hours developing things for their hardware just as much as they do now with the music industry. CRT pixel art was made with its specific limitations to make certain proportions and shape still stand out more in your tv screen. Nothing was made by accident here.
It took me 20 years to realize the game is an isometric platformer disguised as an RPG. Sure, you can play it LIKE an RPG, fight everything along the way for exp, but that's not playing the *real* game.
that's something Yakuza LaD did well. also, AoEs like Chrono Trigger had, where their realtime positioning would affect how many of them you could hit, with different metrics like a straight line from a party member, or a cluster.
>AoEs like Chrono Trigger had, where their realtime positioning would affect how many of them you could hit, with different metrics like a straight line from a party member, or a cluster. >wait for the enemies to randomly perfectly line up into the formation that you want, goy!
CT's system was garbage. You would literally have to sit there and wait until the enemies randomly wiggled around until they're in the perfect zone for you to hit with area techs.
>QTEs also aren't skillful
There are no button prompts in SMRPG. In fact, one of the most common complaints of shitters is that they can't tell when they're expected to press the button without visual feedback.
You should've seen the latest /vr/ thread. morons literally can't comprehend when you're supposed to press the button. And not for nothing, but some of them are rather misleading, like Geno's guns and most of his specials.
I learned how to play that fricking game and beat it when i was 7.
God it's no wonder every game has hours of tutorials anymore.

I could understand having issues with the first Croco fight since that one can be balls with how frail Mallow is at that point and him lacking tools, but holy shit.

it's been a long time since I played the game, but I remember needing to use healing items a lot, maybe they just weren't using items enough. In a lot of modern RPGs you can get away with saving all your items and never really using them.

Read the thread more, the moron fundamentally does not understand when to press the button for defending. And the game gives you shitloads of frames to press it, only 'perfect' defense is a frame or two. Multiple people rightfully called him a troll because it's just too fricking stupid.
This is the ONLY game that square ever made that is any good and that is ONLY because nintendo managed the project. I'll never understand how that shithole company survives.
It's good for what it is, emphasis being on what it is. Ie. just a comfy adventure, it's not trying to be the most epic quest in the history of jadventure games, and certainly isn't.
One of the best games of all times. >“I am matter... I am antimatter... I can see your past... I can see your future... I consume time... And I will consume you!”
Played this last year. It's a good game but it's pretty damn hard. I've played the Paper Mario and M&L games and I never had as much problems with those as I did with this.
>Played this last year. It's a good game but it's pretty damn hard. I've played the Paper Mario and M&L games and I never had as much problems with those as I did with this.
That's just the SNES in general. Every game was harder back then to stretch out playtime.
I don't know why but I find that this game strays a little too far from "Mario" territory. Even the X-Nauts and their moon base seems to fit into the "Mario universe" more than the Smithy gang, even though SMRPG (and PM64) are better than TTYD.
I can get where you're coming from but unlike Super Paper Mario all the weird shit they came up with still kind of feels like Mario stuff. Like the crocodile guy could have easily come out of a Mario game. Same with Mallow and Geno.
On the other hand in Super Paper Mario you have a bunch of weird clashing art styles and a story that feels like it came out of a final gayassy game.
It'll get excused because that's what it always was in Japanese. Nintendo doesn't give a frick about your nostalgia when it gets in the way, like the Koopalings not still being Bowser's kids.
>If the remake rumors pan out I really do wonder how different it'll look. Will they keep the isometric view?
I imagine it will follow the HD 2D style SE has used with other games recently.
>muh leaks
It's Chrono Trigger getting remade, you moronic tendies. Square-Enix has been spamming threads about it on this board for over a year for a reason
I kind of hate Paper Mario for banning the likes of Mallow and Geno. People complain about having no original characters in Origami King but all it did was remove the hats.
They were kind of annoying. I suppose in retrospect I don't have many fond memories of Mario RPGs in general. TTYD sticks out as the only truly competent game.
Ironically TTYD was a very incompetent game that filled like half the game with padding but I loved it too. The good parts were really good. Now that game could really benefit from a remake, though it will never get one.
Overrated
Do you have a reasoning for why you believe so? Share your opinion
You can find Peach's dildo in it
It's most likely just her panties knowing 90's japanese humor kek
party members on the side line should get experience, then it would be perfect.
They do, moron.
It's a 9.5/10 game
The only 10/10 game is Paper Mario 64
False. Mario RPG is better because you're not stuck doing 1 hit damage until you get an item that lets you do timed hits.
I just finished Paper Mario 64 and I can say with confidence it’s much worse than either Mario RPG or TTYD
And they are going to eviscerate it.
it's fricking insane to think that there's so much concept art we'll never see of every video game
Geno should have had his own game.
Agreed.
Yeah, it's pretty good. I like Paper Mario 64 also.
I really liked the world map theme
My favorite jrpg
Eh, it didn't have Daisy so that was a slight hit against it.
They'll swap out Mallow for Daisy. You're welcome.
That would make zero sense.
It's perfect.
It really isn't.
They'd' have to rewrite some key parts of the plot to make that happen and no one actually cares enough about Daisy for that.
>some
They'd have to rewrite a vast majority of it on top of doing an entirely new kit
daisyBlack folk are beyond saving
Anti-daisyBlack folk even more so.
didn't miyamoto anger the devs at Squaresoft at the time due to them pushing for SMRPG resulting in the loss of getting Trials of Mana globally?

From what I know about SMRPG, Miyamoto worked pretty closely with the team. It was really good, but definitely held back by being on the SNES.
Now if this shit actually gets a remake that's a 10/10 right there.
It wasn't held back at all by being on the SNES
The visuals could be improved A LOT on modern hardware, as well as the music/sound. Look at this.
Looks fine to me
Most people don't want to play their games stretched out to frick though so the tiny ass resolution is kind of an issue.
i don't see the problem tbh. looks on par with this, a game released in like 2021
Remakes these days ruin the visuals.

Well I'm not playing on a fricking tiny CRT back in the 90s, I'm playing games on a big HD TV so I'd like a remake of this game.
>blow the pixels up to 10x their native size
>WHOA THIS LOOKS SO BAD WHOA CRTS ARE THE ONLY WAY
delusional
I never said that you schizo.
never forget that this is not a rip from the game but home made propaganda
It unironically was ahead of its time, if you go back and play it now you will see how it really blows most SNES game from a design standpoint.
It took me 20 years to realize the game is an isometric platformer disguised as an RPG. Sure, you can play it LIKE an RPG, fight everything along the way for exp, but that's not playing the *real* game.
>putting Peach's DSLs on the cover to sell copies
genius, just like everything about this gem
Qte on attacks is a mechanic that more RPGs should implement, want to remove the uncertainty and dice rolls? Make it actually skill based
that's something Yakuza LaD did well. also, AoEs like Chrono Trigger had, where their realtime positioning would affect how many of them you could hit, with different metrics like a straight line from a party member, or a cluster.

what
CT's system was garbage. You would literally have to sit there and wait until the enemies randomly wiggled around until they're in the perfect zone for you to hit with area techs.
I had to turn ATB off in DS. It's annoying enough working the postioning without rushing it. Then you get screen clearing techs that invalidate them.
Passable game for little kids, far from being good, let alone perfect
>want to remove the uncertainty and dice rolls?
No, RPGs are all about that, QTEs also aren't skillful, if anything they completely devalue everything
>QTEs also aren't skillful

The animation itself is the button prompt, just because you don't see a big circle with a button icon doesn't mean it's not a QTE.

Paper Mario let you time it better though
was
Paper Mario was literally babby's first jrpg version of RPG and Miyamoto still gassed it for not having enough stupid gimmicks.
The man is a blight.
Go to bed, Arlo.
Miyamoto only gassed it because Super Paper Mario was an utter disaster. Blame IS who somehow thought that game was a good idea.
This is the ONLY game that square ever made that is any good and that is ONLY because nintendo managed the project. I'll never understand how that shithole company survives.

One of the best games of all times.
>“I am matter... I am antimatter... I can see your past... I can see your future... I consume time... And I will consume you!”
Not really but I'm a sucker for Mario RPGs so it's a 10/10 in my book
Played this last year. It's a good game but it's pretty damn hard. I've played the Paper Mario and M&L games and I never had as much problems with those as I did with this.

At the time there wasn't nearly as much Mario material to work with. Most recent mainline Mario game at that point was SMW.
Super Mario RPG! It is the only one just for me. When I play the game I get lost in a phase. Then I find out I'm stuck in Geno's Maze!
Gimme frog coins
I love it to this day, but M&L did the mechanics better.
Unfortunately Superstar Saga is unbelievably easy. The bosses in that game die so fricking fast if you use Bros. moves.
WTB English text mod that replaces “Toadstool” with “Peach”.
>If the remake rumors pan out I really do wonder how different it'll look. Will they keep the isometric view?
I imagine it will follow the HD 2D style SE has used with other games recently.
I hope not. I think it worked great for Live a Live but I don't think it would suit Mario RPG.
It would need to be tweaked a bit to look more, yknow, 3d, but I think it could work otherwise.
>muh leaks
It's Chrono Trigger getting remade, you moronic tendies. Square-Enix has been spamming threads about it on this board for over a year for a reason
Will it look like the modern Dragon Quest games?
Genogays getting worked up over unsubstantiated rumors constantly to disappointment every single time is hilarious to me
I kind of hate Paper Mario for banning the likes of Mallow and Geno. People complain about having no original characters in Origami King but all it did was remove the hats.
Prince Peasly and the Pillow Dude from Dream Time are basically the same character archetype as Mallow.
What's a "competent game?"
It's great, but not perfect. the late game is rushed as frick.
Surely if they're bringing back Mario RPG the next Paper Mario will be a real RPG again right?
So are there any, like, fanmade hd texture packs or something
I don't think you can generally run SNES games at a higher resolution like you can N64 or GC so I doubt it.
these are sprites, you would have to remake the entire game for something like that.
Was it a vibrator or just a dildo?
