NTA but 50 kanji isn't 50 words, you'll still need vocab to read or play anything and vocab is tied to kanji on all levels past elementary. For example you can play Undertale in Japanese knowing only kana and a few kanji, but good luck understanding it with only 50 words under your belt.

you can get to N5 tier by memorizing kana then installing a hover dictionary, which should take you less than a day
not like it will help much given the jisho database hover dictionaries is compromised, but that's already enough for N5
Even if you're just anki-botting it's still gonna add up, once you start recognizing certain kanji and radicals you can start interpreting meaning of words you don't know which have common elements in them. Immersion is gonna do the heavy lifting if you do it every day. Watching stuff with Japanese subtitles, listening to people talk on youtube, reading simple articles and so on.

Devs literally dont speak english themselves, they hire people who they put their trust in and those people breach their trust without their knowledge.
Blue Archive for example has had multiple changes to dialogue because the devs got complaints from garbage translations.
They absolutely have people who are fluent in english. This aint some random euro country, its japan. English is important to know there, and absolutely for a video game company with a global audience they will have a few people atleast on staff who can speak it.
A funny thing I notice is that Americans think Japanese people speak english. I think it's a combination of English being a course pretty much everywhere, english being the most important language ot learn for *anyone* and the fact that english IS a required course for JApanese students. But an unfortunate reality is that it's like....one or two years required for them, maybe some hundreds of hours, whereas it takes supposedly close to three thousand hours for a japanese speaker to become fluent(and vice versa). It's really not all that common for Japanese people to speak english.

That the western audience would prefer it if they weren't seeing something they aren't used to. So they change shit around, from making characters sound more western, to aging up characters or changing the meaning of what they say to make it fit with our western norms. A 14-year old declaring her love? Nah, better make her 18 and have her declare her friendship instead. A man/woman dynamic which seems outdated for us? Better change it.
It's not only inaccurate, it's outright offensive towards the creator. Part of the interesting thing of playing eastern games is that they're written differently from western games. From horror to jrpg, they all feel different from western games. Trying to remove that difference because the translators think it'd be nicer if they weren't so eastern is a fricking shame.

You might not get it now but there is literally no good way to translate it, subs are always loose interpretations because they replace the very specific words that are being used and not used, and so does direct machine-like translation. Try playing a Western game in Japanese and you'll see what I mean. They either localize them or translate them literally and it sounds dry as frick. You HAVE to learn the language to understand the weight dumb constructs like "we have to use THAT" or "MC-kun, I..." actually carries.
Same goes for Russian but in a different direction, you just can't translate it to its full extent, it sounds brutish and harsh but their classic literature language is very precise and full of flavor you can't convey in another language even despite it being full of borrowed words. And don't get me started on their poetry and theater.

this FF9 example is like reverse-shocking. I remember playing the game and thinking that the dialogue was really good especially for a post-snes square enix game, like for once the characters spoke in a relatable and real, albeit cartoony way.
And this scene is a good example. The English is relatable, how you would imagine someone like Zidane, a fricking teen guy would think or say. It's kinda endearing. Japanese on the other hand is like tryhard deviantart poet and doesn't fit the character at all.
I'm not saying it's a good thing that they changed it or that this is how localizing should be done, but I really thought the dialogue writing in FF9 was eerily good for a JRPG.

Some of the old translations were ok because they were extremely literal. They still had many errors, but it was from lack of ability rather than intent. If you were passingly familiar with japanese(or english) you could probably spot them even without looking at the original script.
