You can't translate that as "it's inevitable even if we get lost". It makes zero fricking sense. It has to be "It can't be helped". What this sentence is saying is that you may get lost, but oh well, there isn't shit you can do about it.
Maybe rephrase it as, "We may get lost, but there's no other choice."

Trick question, 100% depends on context.
Not every 仕方がない is equal in an "it" can't be helped way. Not only must you be aware of how it is being used and that it can be used in more than 1 way, you must still be adept at rendering it in English that suits each individual scenario it appears in.

It's also worth pointing out that there are times where you literally CANNOT translate it to anything resembling "it can't be helped"
For example 暑くて仕方ない or 気になってしかたない can't be translated to "it's so hot, it can't be helped" or "I'm worried about it so it can't be elped", but rather "it's extremely hot" or "I just can't get it out of my head". The amount of "translators" who don't understand this is astonishing

              >The amount of "translators" who don't understand this is astonishing
That's why one of the first questions I like to ask people who are into translation is "what books/light novels have you read in the last 3 months in Japanese?"
If they can't answer this question and name at least 1 book per month, their opinion is worthless.
Someone who regularly engages with the language through reading has had lots of time to work out the kinks in their understanding of thousands of words/phrases. Many translators and almost ALL fan translators literally haven't ever completed even the simplest of light novels.

            >rather than going after the actual problem
            The actual problem is economical.

Who do you think gets the license for panty quest 4? The company who offers a 10% return but is planning on hiring the highest quality translation team in the world, or the company who offers 90% but will have the game run through Google translate and rewritten filled with memes?

The margins are thin. The consumer base isn't remotely discerning. There's no merit in doing a good job, and doing a good job means you're likely to go bust if the game doesn't sell.

If good translations made economical sense, we'd have them already. All the dogshit merchants would've been bankrupted after their first game when everyone realised they rewrote every other line. What actually happened? Garbage like Blaustein and WD is revered. Modern troony slop still sells. So if you want to fix the system, you have to fix the CONSUMER. What's easier, convincing millions of people that they wasted 60 bucks, or working it out by yourself and skipping the middleman?

This is incorrect. This is like saying 'If computers made economical sense, we'd have them already' to IBM 70 years ago. The market is untapped because no one has made an attempt to penetrate the market.

We have a case study of what happens when you put a little effort into localization: Crunchyroll. Which is now a massive distributor. We don't get good translations because nobody has ever tried it, they hire the same 10 blue hairs in California and assume it's been a job well done, and then their slop flops and Japan is left scratching their heads, thinking people just didn't like the game.

They hired the same people who were doing work for Fansubs. Granted, most fansubs are crap, but that was miles better than whoever the literal frick was doing subbing work previously. Most of it being unintelligible garbage.
The bar is so low that's all they would have to do in order to see immediate success, and CR proves that. Your statement that it's purely economics that no one wants good localization is purely a projection.

CR's main opposition wasn't other fansubbers, it was 4kids. Who was also doing a "good enough job to where it didn't affect anyone's real bottom line", until someone better came along. You seem too angry to be having this conversation rationally.

They got phased out because they couldn't keep up with the market, and the market was digital distribution. Once CR landed a distribution deal, the whole thing was over overnight.

What you're doing is like insisting that VHS died out because the companies making them were doing a bad job. No, something more convenient came along. Past digital distribution, there isn't really any improvement to be made. >Once CR landed a distribution deal, the whole thing was over overnight.
Hey how did they land that distribution deal? They made better translations, better localizations, hired people who had been doing this for years in fansubs, and delivered a better product.

They didn't 'appear one day' and just start getting contracts because of "lol internet", they spent close to a decade building CR until they were finally mature enough to replace the big industry players.

Kind of what is happening now with localization in games, bruh. CR started because they realized people who were paid to do it suck, and literal fansubbers could do a better job than million dollar companies. At least you can admit that with Japan becoming aware of how shit the bastard localizations are, we're getting to a similar situation and just need someone to swoop in and penetrate the market. It'll happen eventually.

Distribution, yes. Localization, no. Distribution is the be-all, end-all. Doesn't matter how good a product you have, if it takes you 3 months to get DVDs on shelves and incurs a large financial risk, you're going to get absolutely raped by a company who can put up a subtitled version the day it airs. And that's what happened, all the other distributors died.

CR literally saved localization. For us, who don't care about localization because we watch fansubs, that didn't affect us at all. But if you're an ESL who refuses to watch subs and refuses to pirate anime, they were a godsend, and what I just described was the majority of anime viewers at the time.

You keep saying 4kids doesn't matter but they were distributing literally the most popular shows in some countries, and they were terrible at it.

Did you take some kind of special pills to retcon the last 20 years in your head into thinking CR magically appeared and started distributing things? It started as a piracy site BECAUSE they offered a better service than companies worth millions of dollars who's only contribution was making a third-grader's understanding of Japanese and editing and re-cutting a bunch of scenes for no reason.

Kind of what is happening with games NOW. Yeah, giving away other people's property for free and raking in ad money is a better service for the consumer.

                >Frick you, they ALL went away once,
We went from a very small market to a very big one pretty quickly. You honestly think CR is ever going away? It might get rebranded eventually, but nothing is going to kill it. Attempts like hidive haven't taken off.

CR took something that was alright, the fansub community, and made it shittier but a bit faster. I really couldn't give a shit about your experience as a third worlder who needed to "legally" purchase things from fricking redistributors like a clown.

                >rather than going after the actual problem

What's easier, convincing millions of people that they wasted 60 bucks, or working it out by yourself and skipping the middleman?

your entire post hinges on the supposition that this is the best we'll ever get and nothing better out there exists so we should all stop voicing our displeasure with the absolute state of localization collectively.

That's moronic, they're selling me a product so I have literally every right to complain about it. The Japanese aren't going to know that I'm displeased with it unless there are enough loud people that it reaches all the way back to them, and this works. Multiple games have already been re-translated and re-localized specifically because customer complaints reached this

Take this blackpill "Surrender the entire english language" bullshit and shove it. You should be encouraging MORE people to complain.

                >your entire post hinges on the supposition that this is the best we'll ever get and nothing better out there exists
I've read a lot of translations. They all suck ass.

By all means, keep screaming about localization being shit if you want. I agree with you, it's fricking awful. Entertainment is not treated as an artform, it's a business, and it's ran like a business. You can b***h and moan, maybe if you send enough e-mails some garbage will get re-translated. Guess what? The re-translation is still going to be fricking garbage.

There's nothing wrong with complaining, but what you should be doing is solving your own problem instead of waiting and hoping that other people do it for you.

Suppose you're an actually good translator with a command of the source and target language. You may have a master's degree in one or both languages. Now where are you going to work? Prestigous job at the UN translating for diplomats? Six-figure gig at a private firm translating legal contracts worth millions? Or will you be a fricking video game translator paid pennies per word? The actually good translators already have actually good jobs. All that's left is the failures and washouts, who are usually the ones with the agenda and the "I have something to prove (because I'm a failure)" complex that causes them to lash out against any criticism instead of accepting it and bettering themselves and their translations going forward. I mean, do you think the guy who translates conversations and contracts between the president of Nintendo of Japan and the president of Nintendo of America is getting paid the same as the guy at Treehouse who translates Fire Emblem? Do you think the two have the same command of English and Japanese?

The reason we have computers now is because of technological improvements that allowed production of PCs at scale. Smaller, cheaper, useful to the point they're worth having in your home. Companies in the 70s worked to drive manufacturing costs down and computing power up. If you want to apply that same logic to translation, then we need to improve the processes by which translation occurs to the point it is affordable to have an accurate translation. It needs to cost less to produce a translation, and that translation needs to be more accurate.

Its even more disparate in the west, media translation is absolute bottom of the barrel stuff.
I used to work at a place that did translations, among other things, for legal documents. Even the really easy languages like dutch to english or german to english pays like 300 dollars an hour for freelance. For more esoteric shit like chinese or japanese, you're literally writing your own ticket. I believe the hourly rate we were paying for chinese was around 800-900 an hour depending on who we could get at the time. But you had to be absolutely, perfectly fluent in both languages and your error rate had to be extremely low, any more than 2 errors in the same 500+ page document and you were getting replaced, and 3 people would be checking your work directly, in addition to the native speakers proofing it to make sure it made sense.
Meanwhile you watch an anime or read a manga and the error rate is like 2 per page because nobody really gives a shit.

These numbers are on the high end, but this is mostly true. The market for high-end corporate translation is very competitive (in that there are few positions), though. Freelancing is very unstable. The most surefire way to make money doing this sort of work is working for various police depts., courts, prosecutors etc. Pays really well and if you're registered in enough places you can have a constant cash flow.

You get almost no context. The mistake you're making is presuming that there is a cap on spend for accuracy. Which is facile, you're mistaking a niche with whole market permanence.

Look at audio, Deezer in particular which forced accuracy with autistic FLAC formats with audiophiles into the mainstream market. The demands of the high end filtered down to the mid market.

                >The mistake you're making is presuming that there is a cap on spend for accuracy.
I mean, if you're planning on dropping 50k on a translation, you can probably get it as "accurate" as you want. The guy will probably sit on your lap and walk you through the game. I just figured you were spending less so you'd need to rope in a few more idiots to make up the deficit.

Audiophiles are moronic and will pay a lot of money for snake oil. Nobody can hear better than 192kbps, but a lot of people will pay for FLAC anyway because they want to pretend they can.

Paying more doesn't mean you'll get a better product, that's not how the market works. But hey, here I am talking to a 50 year old LARPer who can barely speak one fricking language, so maybe I'm the idiot for wasting my time trying to explain economics to you.

Even in Japanese it's not that redundant because multiple synonymous phrases get used. 仕方がない どうしようもない。しょうがない しゃあねえ 致し方ありません and so on. I just don't think the English language is rich enough to have equivalents.

in japanese there's like 15 variations of it with different subtext and up to 30 if you include the old keigo ones which are often used on games like fire emblem or isekai and fantasy LNs because the characters are supposed to be old fashioned
this subtext is the implication of how they see it, which can go anywhere from "it can't be helped" outright, to "it's not my problem", "it is what it is isn't it? what will you do?", and even "so that's how it's gonna be huh..."

The way it works at funimation and other moron homosexual studios is that they have a translator translate the script, and then the "localizers" go over it and "correct" it for "western audiences" (ie, homosexuals).

The truth of the matter is that a ton of shit translated directly from Japanese to english sounds weird and unnatural since so much nuance is quite literally lost in translation. Once dialogue in anime and video games starts to sound weird and robotic because it was quite literally translated by a robot will you understand.

Feeling "anger" overseeing the word patriarchy or whatever shoehorned into a localization would be preferable to feeling jack shit at all from reading boring ass dialogue.

The fricked up thing about this “japanese is too dry” meme is that it’s perpetuated from an era where MTL was somehow worse than it is today, and just like today even the best “official” translations were either glorified edited MTL or N6 trash.

Japanese does have limited adjectives though. Theres only two ways to say something tastes good, excluding any slurring of the word. Its pretty bland overall as a language. Thats why every medieval Japanese game is written in modern Japanese but localized with a proper medieval dialect

AI translation will only be beneficial if japanese cut the overseas localizer middleman off also. otherwise it will be the troonylators using AI to translate and nothing changes. basically AI translation needs to become so good that you can just input text and get perfect translation out. if that isnt possible then you will always need an english proofreader to fix the script.

If we would have to draw parallels to art, current troonyslators are akin to those horrible old Tumblr drawings where every fictional character gets turned into a fat Black person with body hair all over. I'd absolutely take AI slop over that.

I would say they're close to being equivalent. Most of the same people responsible shift all around entertainment, they aren't specifically a game localizer or an anime localizer.
In terms of quality, Anime used to be way, way worse but got its shit kicked in by piracy so has improved quite a bit (and then got worse again, recent years has been abysmal). Game translations have always been bad.

      Look at the STALKER translation.
The bandits always say "bratishka" which is a dimunitive form of "brat (brother)" so the translation just has them constantly say "bro" this and "bro" that. But the connotation is completely different, "bro" is far more casual in English than the variants used in Russian, it makes bandits and freedomers seems like fricking surfer boys and kills my immersion completely.

        Anonymous

so why not just translate it as brat?

          Anonymous

I'll be honest I don't actually know the best way to translate it, I think about it a lot.
Just using the original Russian word for "brother" in those contexts would be weird if the rest of the speech is completely in English. Trying to figure out a better word that fits more contextually is harder because at the end of the day, they're still saying a variant of "brother". Thread dead so I can't muse on it any longer.
I was really just wondering if we would get lucky and with the Ukraine conflict, the devs would just decide to do a Ukranian only dub for some nice media coverage, but no such luck.

      There's a difference between
      >can't be done/achieved
      and
      >hasn't been done/attempted

Language is constantly evolving and there's no such thing as sacrosanct in translation work. 100% literal is possible and always will be the goal. If our more renown authors of the past would have had their way it would probably be past tense. You vastly overestimate how many people in generations prior to us used to be literate.

Maybe, but likely what we have now is near the peak of the underlying technology. Keep in mind that "AI" is all based on theory from 50 years ago that we're just now able to implement thanks to the technology finally catching up to the idea.
"AI" as it exists today has an inherent permanence problem that seems unlikely to be solved unless we can figure out a way to increase hardware power by like 10,000x.
Someone will have to invent something new, and in the past 50 years nobody has been able to.
But shit like translating 5 lines of dialogue for a scene, or drawing an image, yeah, that will likely get more accurate since its just tweaks to the model.

I haven't actually looked at comic raws that much. Sometimes you see furigana. What determines if there's furigana? Certain magazine? Certain genre (shonen, for kids)?

If it's for kids, it has furigana. Just read jump, or play DQ11.

This goes beyond Video games, if anything, games and anime being butchered, they were just the final nail in the coffin. People have been fed up with culture war bullshit and want to enjoy media, even abroad they cannot have that because of troonslators. Nobody wants culture war shit, we want to get AWAY from it and the political shit shoved into media or media being butchered. We wanted to ignore politics, but it chose to follow us. That is the problem here.

the problem is everytime one moron screeches about "DUH TRANEEEZ ROOINING ANIMAY" 3 more localizers insert a meme reference into a translation specifically to piss them off. both sides need to keep their culture war autism out of it.

Here's the thing, people complaining about troons don't work on this industry and don't have a say on the products, but are the target audience.

Why did people allow them to just claim and hide behind the term localization?
Everytime someone calls them out for being terrible at their job they just go
    >tehee, it's a good localization though!
Which isn't even true. But people just gave them that word unopposed for some reason.

Not all localization is translation work, but all translation work is localization. And if your translation is shit then your localization is shit too.
Don't separate these terms. If you're a shit translator then you are a shit localizer.

      Anonymous

Is this really about them being "'terrible" at their job though?

The main concern seems to be that these localizers are petty and purposefully insert their politics into the localizations, nobody seems to give a frick about them throwing in random slurs or curse words, at least not to the same extent as then. And then the chudcels being 10x pettier are cheering on their loss of livelihood for these perceived transgressions.

I don't fricking know anon, does this not sound like a terrible translation job to you? Almost every thread of this sort has examples that do not have anything to do with politics, like whatever the frick Nintendo tends to do with FE, NISA shit, whatever else you want, but you tend to focus on the c**ts who do it out of spite as if they are the only issue here. No, they are not the sole problem, they are a subset of the whole "terrible translation/localization" issue and deserve to be called out as well.

          Anonymous

And where are these examples? the non-political ones that is because pretty much everyone in this thread seems more peeved about that than anything.

The bottom line is a.i taking over jobs is much much bigger than this dramatrain and people aren't going to realize how big until it's their job that a.i comes for next.

This is what they mean when they say shit like.
        >Translation is HARD, I do so much work
What they really mean, 100% of the time, is that they hated the original idea of the conversation and thought it was "boring". So they made more work for themselves, for no reason and then thought they were so amazing for doing some basic word play so they could avoid being "basic" with a cat accent. I would just have her say Meow every so often and probably less than she says Nya in the Japanese, which if I had to guess, is at the end of every sentence.

It's genuinely not that difficult, westoids love to mislead you by making you believe you need to learn ALL kanji before you even start reading, but in reality you will learn kanji passively as words through reading without even needing anki.

It comes down to the audience and the level of institutional control they have. If they control the institutions they will gleefully attack creators and the audience. If they don't have control they will simply ignore its existence until there's a critical mass of them that have infiltrated the industry. Rarely they will try to brute force their way in using attack articles and shaming tactics.

I wonder if he spent as much time being a fair and openminded person as he did running mental gymnastics over his own arrogance and incompetence would he escape reincarnation?

It doesn't teach about Japanese culture, it just IS Japanese culture. You're going through the effort of removing that by pretending you're somehow doing a great service to the original by cutting out all the "Japaneseness" out of it.

        That's ultimately what localizers want.

The Japanese media they claim to love still embarrasses them, so they water it down to the point where people who have no business consuming it start doing so in droves.

Seeing Japanese media gatekeep itself is their greatest fear.

          >Seeing Japanese media gatekeep itself is their greatest fear.
Which is also why they spend monumental amounts of effort lying directly to the faces of japanese executives, as proved by PSO2.

This guy 100% hates Japan and the Japanese language. It's not even American pigheadedness, it's just pure disdain.

It's not rocket science. Look at what it says, and write it out that way to the best you can. We need no additional input. If you don't do that, well you're in the wrong job.

      accurate non trash translations
I do want this. But AI can't give me this. At least not now and who knows when it will be able to.
If it could there would genuinely be no problem. But if AI can't give me what I want then I won't support it. At least not until it is actually capable of it.

I just don't want every translation to be AI because AI isn't good enough.
It's already piss easy to MTL games. If MTLs were actually good enough I would just play all the games I wanted to play instead of praying for proper translations.

I am annoyed by people pretending like MTLs are good. And I honestly doubt they even believe that. At least I doubt they've played any actual MTLs.

I just want AI to get to a point where it can be used in an overlay and translate shit on the fly. Since models can be made and distributed publicly then non-pozzed models will be made.

        >I just want AI to get to a point where it can be used in an overlay and translate shit on the fly.
We have that already. There multiple different tools for that kind of thing. Go ask /vn/ on /vg/ or something.
It's the quality that's lacking. Not the surrounding software.
