I enjoyed it but nearly a 9/10 is too high of a rating for a game with that many issues
The first 3 or 4 chapters were the best part of this game, the longer it kept going the more it fell apart
The later chapters fail on both the design and technical level

WotR is overall a much better game. Its only downside compared to Kingmaker is the lineup of companions

kingmaker was miles better than wrath and i'm tired of pretending it's not. kingmaker had the SOUL. a million little details all came together at the end and everything was connected. owlcat put their all into kingmaker, they held nothing back. can you say the same for wrath?

Nok-nok was great. The rest of the game was mostly an empty slog with little to nothing worth noting save for a very forced attempt to create attachment to the nymph bawd.
Setting was done much better than WOTR but then WoTR is an unfinished mess.

The plot is not that good but the protagonist and the roleplaying options are 10/10. Almost every conversation gives you over 5 dialogue options, sometimes one for every single alignment, it's kino.

I'm having flashbacks to getting railroaded through a kickstarter backer's OC hellknight and having to balance saving kittens with killing kittens in order to maintain lawful neutral. Ignoring technical flaws, the worst thing about Kingmaker was the roleplaying/dialogue options.

        >and having to balance saving kittens with killing kittens in order to maintain lawful neutral
Just fricking roleplay and read the motherfricking scroll if you're getting too far from your initial alignment. Kingmaker allows VERY nuanced roleplaying for a crpg with drifting alignments.

      >the roleplaying options are 10/10
Well, mechanically yes, but the story and establishment do lean heavily in favour of Charname being some brand of Lawful or at least Neutral.
I haven't played WOTR yet, but on face value it seems to be a bit more open, alignment-wise.

This game would have been amazing if not for the lack of companion ai. I don't want to have to cast fricking magic missiles in turn based for each party member. Unpopular opinion - kingdom management was one of the most fun parts of the game. If they made something focused entirely on that I'd buy it in a heart beat

If it did have AI, you would be complaining that your mages blow their entire load of spells on the first fight.

I enjoyed Kingmaker too, even kingdom management. The game has low points like the spider dungeon in the end of chapter 3, and Nyrissa's funhouse (which was also artificially made twice longer than it should be), but overall it's a great crpg.

I do love Kingmaker. I even enjoyed the Kingdom Management.
It was real neat going on adventures, then coming back to a bunch of interactions with peasants and traveling weirdos and uprisings and shit. I'm glad I didn't listen to people who said to put it on automatic.

I have mixed feelings about kingdom management, I don't think it's bad but it makes me feel more like a baron / ruler rather than an adventurer

Which again, isn't a bad thing, it's just different from most other RPGs. And I personally prefer the adventurer feeling. It is a pretty cool gimmick tho, I don't think that it deserves all the hate

I think part of it for me is that it really allowed my butthole RPG tendencies to be REWARDED, even in kingdom management.
I ruled like an butthole (well, a fair butthole, but still a tyrant) and the game not only let me, but actively rewarded me.
I remember about 40 hours in I got an achievement for doing "three evil story choices" and I went to check it out and had a good laugh about the fact that it had a global achievement rate of 2.3%.
I haven't played the next one where I guess being evil is ACTUALLY rewarded heavily, so I'm looking forward to it.

  13. 2 years ago

I think 7/10 is a bit more accurate. Companions have way too little dialogues and content overall. Most of the map is essentially empty lots of land with nothing but a looting spot and like, a bear or a kobold. The roleplaying is nice but then also really doesn't matter a whole lot since any consequences are usually just a random kingdom card popping up or not.
The plot also moves at a crawling pace just to inflate the playtime with ridiculously long stretches of nothing happening and nothing to do.
When things do happen it's pretty fun. But there is so much filler, and it has such a bad pacing problem, that it becomes tiring.

      Anonymous

      >just to inflate the playtime
I've been wondering about this. When did "more hours = better game" become such a standard for crpgs?
If you can take all the same content, strip out the pointless walking around and unnecessary trash fight, wouldn't you have a much better game? Short and dense is better than long, pointy-eared and empty.

        Anonymous

It's a marketing thing, marketers want "over 300 hours of gameplay" over "every encounter is well thought out". That's the biggest problem with marketers, they're all soulless bureaucrats who only understand hard numbers and don't appreciate softer qualities.

      >The plot also moves at a crawling pace just to inflate the playtime with ridiculously long stretches of nothing happening and nothing to do.
You say that now, but I remember perfectly well just how much fricking whining there was at launch from people failing to complete the chapters within the expected timeframe and getting their kingdom rekt.
Rather that playtime inflation, that was 100% tard proofing. Insufficient tard proofing at that, as sad as it may be from the point of view of people left fast forwarding the last two years waiting for the plot to catch up with their efficient adventuring.

The hardcoded "through magic, we deciphered you have X days and Y hours until the next attack" thing is unnatural and hamfisted. Giving "lol its magic bro" as an excuse comes off as lazy writing, like they couldn't think of a way to organically justify having a hardline time.

It's like in LotR if Gandalph where to be like:

I'm not quite sure why this triggers your autism because that's more so an information to the player than an in-world metric. In fact if you read the actual reports they always say vague estimates of time like "within a few months" or "very soon", but the UI gives you the exact days and hours for your convenience and planning, especially since you're effectively playing a simple SRPG with time constraints, so that's more than welcome.

It's also a thing in RPGs that most players don't pay attention to timers that are vague, only countdown timers.

Yeah that's pretty much the answer that should be given to someone who compares lotr magic to pathfinder magic
Imagine thinking examining a portal isn't plausible in a setting where a whole school of magic is devoted to information gathering and even low level spells let you deeply understand the characteristics and abilities of objects and beings.
Regardless, you may want to explain why it isn't comparable narratively speaking, since it's pretty much the same exact thing: a time limit to reach for the plot to progress.

There is no such thing as "getting better" in pathfinder once you understand that almost every good build will use the same feats like combat reflexes and seize the moment. This game won't help you either because i would bet your DM has a brain and probably nerfed all the moronic "must have" feats.

I really don't like pathfinder as a system but that's by far my biggest pet peeve with it, just all the worthless shit feats that should really just be basic functionality that you still need to pick up, just to frick over newer players that don't have the foresight to know they need this garbage or the hours to waste combing through that trash. And don't even get me started or fricking weapon focus or finesse weapons and how you need a separate feat for each of them each with different bullshit prerequisite feat paths.

Never understood why people like Combat Reflexes. Enemies triggering AoOs is always pretty rare for me, almost never more than 1 per round. Is there some trick there? There's only a very few enemies that charge through into my backline casters.

          Anonymous

AoO are used up when you trigger concurrent attacks from allies with other perks, so you can have a sword saint or duelist or something with a very high crit rate and large number of attacks trigger an AoO from your gigantified pole arm swinging barbarian at full BAB multiple times a round

My crit range is 15-20 and i have a ton of stacking buffs to add to rolls. I can basically crit anytime i want to and in the process get free attacks from every single melee attacker in range that can also crit and also proc more attacks from everyone and so on. You just turn everything that can be crit into a joke by becoming a blender of death.

            Anonymous

You still only have a crit rate of at best ~25%, and 3 attacks. So you score an average of 0.75 crits a turn, and generate 0.75 AoOs for your ally per turn. It'd be fairly rare to crit multiple times in the same turn.

Also, how many enemies are even alive after you crit them a second time in a single turn? I used nok nok in my game and the problem is that he does so much damage even without crits that nothing survived more than 2 or 3 attacks from him, even though he had 8 attacks per round. All those extra attacks are wasted, including attacks from allies.

              Anonymous

anon you get that effect from any ally who crits in your range, so if you have 4 melees any one of which who can trigger that effect, and then also trigger that effect consecutively if the AoO itself crits, you can see how having additional AoO is the same as having additional attacks most of the time

                Anonymous

                >4 melee
how often do you even get 4 melee around something? Just pathing issues + most enemies die in one round of being attacked anyway. I checked and my Nok Nok does ~90 damage per hit along with 8 APR. The idea that I would need 3 other melee characters to kill something is pretty silly.

                Anonymous

I usually split my party into 2 groups, using both of my magi for tanking and have Valerie(Respecced to 2 handed fighter) +Amiri paired with one each. Tristan normally stays in somewhat of a middle ground for heals and Octavia stays in the backline mostly and CCs after buffing everyone. So you're somewhat right, but even just having 2 characters in melee range ups your chances to hit, crit and proc AoO exponentially.

              Anonymous

I have more than 3 attacks counting quicken metamagic and spellsword attacks anon. I also have arcane accuracy perfect crit to up the X3 to X5 and this is before i get X5 from the level 20 "weapon mastery" SS capstone ability. Also, i have Regongar with the same build, just standard magus instead and dipped into DD a few levels for the +stats. Combined with every ally having critical range feats and 5/6 of them being melee fighters, i get so many AoO every enemy is dead in under a turn that isn't immune to crits.

              Anonymous

              >You still only have a crit rate of at best ~25%, and 3 attacks
If you have haste, twf, natural attacks or feats that gives advantage on attack rolls you'll be rolling in crits. In a melee heavy party, you also have that chance on every character.

              Anonymous

              >You still only have a crit rate of at best ~25%
15-20 implies 6 rolls (15,16,17,18,19,20) where crits can occur on a single attack, so 30% to get into that crit range. So it's initially guaranteeing a 30% hit chance. In the worst case scenario with confirmation accounted for it's a minimum of 30% to hit and 0.3*.05= 1.5% to crit while in the best case it's 0.3*0.95= 28.5% to hit. Much higher than 25% in the best case scenario. If you know what you're doing with buffs and use of Greater Invisibility or other abilities that guarantee flat footed, you should be able to guarantee that you're always in the best case scenario with a 95% chance to hit since you can get well over +40 to hit easy even with debuffs to hit like power attack.

I think it lets you AoO nuke someone by chain-proccing seize thee moment. I've seen a few webms of martial parties all with seize the moment triggering like 20 AoOs from seize the moment attacks triggering more sieze the moment attacks triggering more seize the moment attacks ad infinitum.

Lets you AoO while flat-footed and it lets you take far better advantage of AoO triggering abilities like Greater Trip.

            This[...]
            see[...]

Two classes of note. Rogue and Monk.

Rogue has something called Opportunist https://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/core-classes/rogue/rogue-talents/paizo-rogue-advanced-talents/opportunist-ex/
This triggers AoO from just a normal hit. so this saurates your pool of AoO already then and then. Combat Reflexes will be needed to make full use of Seize the Moment.

(And yes Opportunist Stacks with Seize the Monent, if you have multiple Rogues, Thugs and Knifemasters, you become that much more deadly)

Monk with Pummeling strike. Any of his strikes will quality for Free action Trip attempt.
When the opponent drops, that's the first AoO.
When the opponent stand up again, that's the second AoO.

They trigger on crits if you have outflank and/or seize the moment, so if you have a frontline heavy party (especially with pets) and they all also have improved crit and a decent dex score, you can one round most things just by triggering a single crit.

Outflank doesn't stack with Seize the Moment, right?

Do you mean if you still get Outflanked bonus on a proc'd Seize the Moment? If so yes. They're not really stacking since they don't give you the same bonus.

        Anonymous

I mean if you have both then you can't get two AoOs off a single crit.

          Anonymous

I think you're confusing Outflank with something else, because all it does is give you a +2 increment on your Flanking bonus (which is already +2 by default).

            Anonymous

            >Whenever you and an ally who also has this feat are flanking the same creature, your flanking bonus on attack rolls increases to +4. In addition, whenever you score a critical hit against the flanked creature, it provokes an attack of opportunity from your ally.

ha ha what the frick I dont remember that second part at all. But knowing Pathfinder it likely doesn't stack because they do the same thing. From what I'm reading here Seize The Moment gets you an aoo when your ally scores a crit, but outflank gives your ally the aoo when you crit.
They seem kind of redundant now that I'm looking at this

??? one is the feat of a person allowing AoO's from their allies, and one gains AoO for yourself from allies

                Of course they stack!

You're just limited by your number of AoO

but being enlarged with dinosaur DNA will put everything in all of your tank's attack ranges so it's hardly unrealistic for any particular battle

      Anonymous

I don't think you get double AoOs, but I'm pretty sure crits generated by an AoO from for example outflank can in turn trigger an AoO from seize.

If you talk to him at olegs and tell him 'no way gay', it never happens again.
If during the first time he tries to h8t on you , you say 'no way gay', it never happens again.
                So it cannot happen twice.
                As for the otehr romances?
Val romance cannot actually start if you do not pick 'I find you beautiful' in Olg camp in chapter 1.
Octavia romance cannot begin if you do not get enough flags , including calling her a flower, complimenting her etc.

The game has a very specific flag system that checks if romance is initiated and if you got enough points for the next event.

We have mods that check said flags and counters and we have localization file with all the text.,

So did somehow the game break all the rules just for you? Bugged out specifically so all romanceable characters hit on you no matter what?

there's a stage of tristian's romance where he has something to tell you and teleports you to your bedchambers. That dialog would constantly repeat everytime you put foot in your capital and teleport you back to your room.

Well, on one hand we have the text files, knowledge of the system mechanics and mods that show how flags are triggered, how affection is kept track of and how events start, and the experiences of tons of players on how to start romances or not.
And o the other hand, we have a homosexual in denial who insists that he wanted no gay orc romance, it just kept happening somehow.

You can find the text files in the game folders. If you install bug of tricks, you can see the flags and romance counters. The moment you say 'frick off' or do not pick specific options, romance is dead at -1 affection counter.
                This is easily verifiable.

Though most people will notice how this works when they kill romances by accident and try to fix it, not because romanceable characters keep forcing themselves on the MC.
But you are a homosexual in denial, so it's different

It wasn't. You claim the romance is forced upon you. Its been stated multiple times you have to initiate it by checking conversation flags. You continue in your delusions that it happens without the player input. You are the big gay and should just shut up and accept the fact that you initiated the flirting.

I said the gayness of Ragengor is forced on the player. And it is. I just replayed the 1st chapter and it happens twice even if you reject his approach the first time. You only have to reject Tekehu the gay-fish once. That's it. That's my point.

So you are saying that if you reject his romance at the earliest possible point, you still see 2 lines where it makes it obvious he also likes wieners. Instead of 1. It's a 6/10 at best due to the absolutely unplayable state the game launched (and remained) in for almost a full year.

I just figured out something.if you have a melee group with Reach weapon, this is actually extreemely posterful.

Opponents' melee guys will have to step up to you.
If it's 3 vs 1, you can take the guy the opponent stepped up to and move him a little bit away, but still withing the reach of your reahc weapon.
This will force the opponent to step into range of one of your 3 guys, and the movement will rob him of his Full Attacks, thus enhance your defendive capability significantly.
Just repeat this again and again to deny him full attacks.

      Anonymous

If you are 5 foot stepping then theoretically the enemy can 5 foot step to catch up to you and then they are able to do a full attack. I'm not sure if the AI actually understands and uses 5 foot steps though.

If you are just normal walking away a longer distance then it will work, but then you can't do a full attack either. It works well if you are something like a Vital Strike build though since that only requires half the round.

Also, this is literally what the Slow spell does (enemy can never take full round actions), along with anything else that inflicts staggered.

        Anonymous

        >>If you are just normal walking away a longer distance then it will work, but then you can't do a full attack either
It's like a form of kiting, you just have to ournumber the enemy and you can cripple him this way.

Nice tip with the Vita strike though, that will enhance it significantly.

        >I'm not sure if the AI actually understands and uses 5 foot steps though.
They don't, at least not in WOTR. I don't know if the original KM mod let them 5 foot step. On the other hand this starts to break down once you're fighting enemies that are large or bigger.

          Anonymous

I thought the game might just give them the full attack if they move less than a 5 foot steps max range but I have no idea if that's actually the case. I generally play in real time and I know that you can make very small movements there and maintain your full attack rate.

            Anonymous

My experience is that if they have to move at all it counts as a move action for them in turn based, not 5 foot step.

If you want a sure way to stop enemies from doing full attacks, just figure out a way to stagger them.

And this is why Staggering Critical is the most powerful critical effect.
It always applies for at least 1 round and stops opponent from doing full attack.

Yeah but it still requires 2 feats and only works on things that are probably going to be dead after your crit.

This is why 1 level of Bloodrager with Fey Bloodline is so incredibly potent.

    Octavia: Wizard/Rogue/Arcane Trickster

    Harrim: Cleric/Blight Druid
    Tristian: Ecclesitheurge/Empyreal Sorcerer/Mystic Theurge
    Jaethal: Inquisitor/Aldori Swordlord
    Linzi: Bard/Sylvan Sorcerer (Mammoth)

Amiri and the twins are staying pure to 20 and my PC is going Slayer to 20.

The idea was to use as many classes as possible as fully as possible. I'm not looking for advice on how to improve the situation. I'm just asking for a what am I in for.

Also, I just found out the game doesn't always check if you're physically holding quest items you're expected to have at that point in the game, and I'm wondering if there are any major glitches relating to that I might be able to do down the road. So far I've just seen that you can "turn over" the branches at the conclusion to Old Sycamore, even if you dropped them, and then you can reclaim the dropped branches.

          >If you split up classes then you lose out on end game level 20 abilities.
I know. Although that's not really an issue for the prestige classes since they preclude that in the first place.

          So really...
          >Ekundayo: Ranger/Divine Hunter
          >Harrim: Cleric/Blight Druid
          >Linzi: Bard/Sylvan Sorcerer (Mammoth)
...are the 3 questionable decisions there (setting aside poor level balance). Although, I'm not really sure how well...
          >Jubilost Narthropple: Alchemist/Eldritch Knight
          or
          >Jaethal: Inquisitor/Aldori Swordlord
...will work out. Jaethal especially since I'm having to toss her scythe specialization to get the class to work.

Honestly Linzi's working out better than I thought she would so far because CC spells give her something to do besides miss crossbow shots, the Mammoth is okay at tanking and good at rushing down archers, and due to what I'm pretty sure is a bug, her Bard light armor casting w/o arcane failure still works with her Sorcerer spells. Unless I'm missing something. I've got her in light armor that should have a failure chance and it's not showing up for the Sorcerer section of her spellbook. Sorcerers can't do that right? Did I miss a bonus somewhere?

            >Jaethal especially since I'm having to toss her scythe specialization to get the class to work.
A single feat lost isn't ultimately that big of a deal. I switched her to reach weapons in my game.

            >Linzi
Everything will just scale really poorly as you level. A level 1 sorcerer with Grease can basically cheese the first third of the game because Grease is so good but it'll eventually start to fall off. Also pure Bard is itself a great caster with tons of CC that you're missing out on by only having 10 levels. A Bard linzi can be a competent frontliner if you give her the equipment and feats for it.

Interesting catch on the spell failure thing. Probably a bug that no one notices because no one really splits classes like that, it's ultimately not that useful since casters aren't attacked that often and have Mage Armor that doesn't stack with other armor bonuses.

You really don't need more damage on Nok Nok if he has full 10d8 sneak attacks and dual wielding. Utility from maximum alchemist levels is more important. Level 4 spell slots include Echolocation, Freedom of Movement, and Death Ward, all of which are incredibly good. Especially Echolocation which lets you ignore the HatEoT bullshit and which only alchemist can cast on other party members.

Nok Nok by endgame will deal ~75 damage per hit and have 7 attacks. He'll pretty reliably hit anything even with his last attacks (Spawn of Rovagug has 40 touch AC, my Nok Nok had a attack bonus of +44) . That's ~500 damagein a single full attack, and I'm not even taking into account a 30% crit rate. You don't need more, aside from the final boss and the secret boss there's no enemy that can come close to taking a single full round attack from him.

You're not just spending 1 feet, you're spending levels that could be going into vivi to get different feats and important spells. Some of the spells which I listed. You're just better off investing in other things. e.g., Vivi can give wings for +4 AC (which also look cute on Nok Nok). Altogether Vivi will massively buff his and your whole party's survivability.

      >jubi
5/10 Mediocre, but maintains spellcasting progression so he's still decent but won't be able to hard counter bosses with bombs.
      >Valerie
9/10 Should be quite fine to excellent.
      >Octavia
8/10 That's virtually the default recommended build for her to maximize sneak attack damage with ray spells. I'm not a fan of ray sneak attack builds (way better to just get a bow and get multiple free sneak attacks per round), but it's still fine.
      >Regongar
7/10 ES 16/DD 4 is recommended as optimal but 10/10 split isn't that awful.
      >Ekundayo
2/10 Screws his pet and splits spellcasting progression.
      >Nok-Nok
3/10 Duelist stuff means he can't dual wield which is the whole point of his starting build which dual wields kukris. It's probably still alright in practice because sneak attacks are overpowered even if you're only getting half progression but the complete anti-synergy is awful.
      >Harrim
0/10 Splits spell progression on two classes that are full casters. If you could at least take the Animal domain and get a fully leveled pet out of it then it'd be 2/10 but Harrim's domains are already preset.
      >Tristian
5/10 This is basically the optimal Mystic Theurge build, but Mystic Theurges are kind of meme builds in that at level 20 they can do a ton of stuff but the spell progression along the way is horribly delayed
      >Jaethal
6/10 loses spellcasting progression but not that awful for a frontliner.
      >Linzi
2/10 split spellcasting progression and limits bard progression so no synergy at all. Also will end up with awful pet levels.

        Anonymous

        >Also will end up with awful pet levels.
I heard pets fall off late game anyway except Trample which is useful endgame no matter what. Thought it might work out.

I know split spellcasting's awful, but tbh I genuinely don't see a way to multiclass without gimping spells so I figured I might as well not worry about it and see what I can do as I go. Worst case scenario I'll just use casters less as they fall off.

Yeah the only way to do it is through the prestige classes that are specifically designed to be able to continue spellcasting progression with the relevant base classes.

Assuming you are talking about Wild Gaze:

              - Holy Aura gives immunity to mind-affecting spells

              - Mind Blank, Communal gives an additional +8 to save vs. mind affecting spells, wild gaze is only 26 DC so it'd be 100% save chance

              - Echolocation gives immunity to gaze attacks

              - Blessing of Luck and resolve lets you reroll failed saves vs. fear and is level 2

              - Remove fear is a level 1 spell

              Choose whatever you like.

I woud turn all of the spell casters into levle 19 martials if you ask me.
It's just the more fun way to play.

Octavia and Nok Nok becomes so powerful with high level Rogue abilities.
Opportunist is an additional attack per round.
They can Debilitate, and double Debilitate
They can Dispel magic on sneak attacks.
They can Critical blind the opponent for cheap.
          All sorts of nice things.
There are plenty of full martial classes so you can give one to each of them.

Explain to me why a dodgetank shouldn't be able to also spec into defensive options from shields by training to be able to use them without a penalty to dodge like characters that actually fricking specialize in them? You know some games don't even have class systems. They just have skill trees.

How to play magus? I have Regongar in the party, followed some min-max guide, making him Dragon Disciple and he still feels like made of paper while having poor damage output.

                >poor damage output
How do you frick up Regongar that badly? Just give him a 1h weapon and no shield. He's a spellsword, his gimmick is casting while in melee combat so he needs a free hand. Even just autocasting Touch of Fatigue as part of his basic attack more or less doubles his damage output cause he's using his weapon to apply it. If you also spec him into touch and defensive spells from there he becomes an excellent frontliner.

canonically she is a wizard, she has no inherent magic like regongar, instead she has "her books" as regongar himself says, so she should definetly be a wizard.
Also sorcerers scale with CHA, and wizards with INT, so be careful with that, if respeccing her you left her with high INT you fricked yourself over.

No but you are dumb. The rogue level was for arcane trickster so you can have big sneak attack dmg with her spells. Arcane trickster gets a toggle ability to allow her spells to sneak attack against any and all targets, so big aoe spells will automatically deal sneak attack dmg.

This isn't the only thing. In general the writing in Wrath is terrible and inconsistent. It also added a larger amount of the feature bloat from the supplements like the class variants which are mostly much worse than the base-class (spelldancer magus for example; +10 to movement and +2 to ac against aoo is terrible compared to magus arcana) while some of the variants are so good there's little reason to use the base classes unless you want to utilize a certain feature removed by the relevant variant.

anything that can cast mage spells can make their AC soar relatively early, and you have three of these, one of which is an alchemist, one of the tankiest classes in the game.

            Anonymous

Making Jubi take discoveries for AC and using Dex mutagen is a bit of a waste.
Of course, he can pick a class with a pet and that thing will handle anything that is not will save related till he gets immunity buffs

Well, nobody has full bab in that party, so fill those boots?
Could be Shield Basher slayer, Aldori defender/swordlord intimidation tank, Pouncer Barb/THF or tripper monk.

isn't it lacking any good tank?

He can use Val in chapter 1 or a merc, later Reg can do it .

        Regongar & Jaethal tanks/frontline
        Harrim reach melee
        Octavia/Jubilost buffs/dps/CC
That's entire team right there, no matter what you do it will work well. Maybe avoid playing frontilner/someone with pet because 3 frontliners tend to block in tighter spaces

      >Octavia
If you make her a level 9 Rogue / 10 Duelist she becomes very badass, makes her super tanky, but also deadly.

Add a sylvan sorcerer with a jaguar and you should be good. Jaguar stays small and is fast so won't get in the way much. Or you go with a druid, either feyspeaker or defender of the true world, depending on how you want to play it out.

I'm aware that I'm likely being a smooth brain, but can someone explain what Scroll Savant is supposed to do or offer? With Nenio at level 10 SS, the scrolls of the spells that I have already learned are just weaker versions of the real thing.

      Anonymous

They are the exact same versions of the real thing at least cause she casts them at her own caster level.
And with certain items, at a higher caster level.
You can cast situational round duration buffs you pick up while playing, play scrolls of spells that have rare or costly components (diamonds, dinosaur bone) or spells from her opposing schools (like dispells). And with her rank in magic device you likely have, you can use divine spells as well, no problem. Like, using heals no issue. Be smart with what you craft and you expand your arsenal

Using divine scrolls is neat, I hadn't thought of that. Too bad scribing scrolls is a real b***h of a mechanic to play around.

I just want someone who can reliably hit those fricking ghosts and skeletons and stuff that is immune to physical damage

          Anonymous

Weapon focus and greater to connect
Weapon Specialization and Greater to add damage
Outflank so when you gang up on someone it's easier to hit them (teamwork feat, other party member must have it)
Power attack to hit harder (with buffs and extra abilities, penalty will matter less).
Blind fight (take it by lv 10-12)

Then you have two feat chains:
          >Dazzling Display/Shatter Defenses/Cornugon Smash/Dreadful carnage
These are to intimidate opponents (cause shaken debuff) and make it easier to hit them. Raise persuasion skill
          >Cleave/Cleaving Finish
Kill someone, get a free hit on somebody else for free

Other decent feats are improved critical, combat reflex for more attacks of opportunity, seize the moment, intimidating prowess if you go down the intimidation route, improved initiative so you get your shit in earlier

            Anonymous

Skeletons are not immune to physical dmg and by the time you see ghosts you should have magic weapons to hit then with.
            >feats.
Go wep specialization great sword, power attack, dazzling display (kinda useless but needed for other feats), crogun smash (intimidates targets you hit), and shatter defenses(targets you intimidate are flat-footed to your attacks. They loose alot of the AC). You'll also want blindfight and improved blindfight at some point, lots of enemies you rub into will be hard to hit with out it late game.
Yeah that's it. Arcane trickster allows Octavia to apply sneak attack dmg to spells. She'll also get a toggable ability to make a spell a guaranteed sneak attack, this includes aoe spells.

thanks, can i respec freely or not?

In Baldur's Gate 2 you could camp inside turorial dungeon for years, especially if you have no healing ability and you set the game to rest until fully healed.
That just kills the immersion even though nobody complained.

in Kingmaker they give you generous deadlines to the mount there you end up with nothing to do for months, just waiting for something to happen.
            That's the better compromise.

      >>The point is to rush divine/arcane to build teleport towers, which makes ALL other activities much easier.
That's an irrelevant talking about because that's long after chapter 2.
And in chapter 2 you will be skipping months just to move to chapter 3.

      So please cope harder.

You will still have extra days to rank up advisors and annex regions compared to not doing so. The fact that you skip is irrelevant. The point is that someone who does everything possible in chapter 1 will hit milestones faster than you.

Running out of things to in kingdom management happens much later. The point is to unlock conveniences for you. Raise ranks to get new regions, new villages, artisans etc.
Things that enhance gameplay parameters outside kingdom management.
It's not even that hard to do everything on chapter 1. You have plenty of time. You have a small gain that you do not need to sacrifice anything for. It makes no sense to call it any kind of cope. Except for being a moronic shitposter, but I like to engage in good faith

It actually saves time in real life when you don't have to do 30 reloads to kill the electric skull, and 30 reloads to kill the Boggards.

In-game is won't save you shit.
            >Running out of things to in kingdom management happens much later.

Boggard cave can be cleared at lv 3 full party.
And 'doing everything possible at chapter 1' does not entail in any way 'go with 4 party members at lv 2 and do boggard cave, ratnook hill etc'. Extremely feasible to get wrecked once, bounce out and return later within chapter 1.
Not sure how that supports your argument in any way.

Pounce is less good outside of turn based mode and the game has some really fricking moronic rules for what's a clear line of effect for charge, to be fair.

Okay, serious question, why would you not play turn-based mode?

I tried real time and it was cancer. Enemies are faster than you so you can't kite, ranged attacks can't be dodged, there's no startup on attacks so maneuvering or corner cheese is pointless, and all your character are harder to manage because who is and isn't fricking up isn't easy to track. Pillars this shit is not.

It just felt like a turn-based system being overly faithfully represented in real time.

                >Okay, serious question, why would you not play turn-based mode?
Because by late game, turn based mode takes fricking forever and a good team setup can roll over the majority of trash encounters before you'd finish a single turn in TB just by charging at the start of combat
By the end of my angel oracle/triple fire crossblood sorc my mc was unironically the least useful character in the majority of fights because 24hr angel buffs with oracle buffs plus competent martials slaughtered everything before I could even send a quickened spell out
If the fight was dangerous? Yeah switch to turn based and he'd instakill every demon around with holy space lasers from the skies but that was a rarity

Feats and weapon training from fighter (say two handed one), Slayer with study target and sneaks and freebooter with booter bond and bane (plus the last two skipping feat requirements to get you set up a bit faster) are better as a package.
Though Pounce is a great thing to have eventually, you'd still multiclass a barb.

On its own barbarian is one of the weaker classes. It can't tank well at all and Amiri's stats don't help there either (13 Dex, and low CHA/WIS means no cheesy monk dip to fix her).

Your options are either spending a lot of feats/levels on heavy armor proficiency and shit to turn her into a clone of Valerie, or to say frick it and give her a two handed reach weapon and stand her behind someone. The former is still kind of meh, the latter means her bastard sword feats are wasted and still still only has 16 STR.

Wouldn't she still be able to offtank with a couple feats into defense? She's highly mobile, hits hard, and she starts with decent con. She can rushdown weaker mobs and ranged attackers while somebody else takes the more dangerous heat.

Also try not to trip the trap at the entrance, the one that sounds the bell. They'll be pre-buffed otherwise.

Also also - summon a small fire elemental at the back. It will completely draw that alchemist's attention, and since the elemental is resistant to fire, he'll absorb all the thrown bombs.

You need some to claim land and should keep like 100 in reserve in case an event needs some. But also buying BP with gold is a big thing and you'll probably buy thousands of gold over the course of the game whenever you want something done.

Build stuff or complete tasks with your advisors.

If you want to savescum, getting "triumphs" in events with your advisors gets much better rewards in the form of more stat points and BPs. To do that you have to beat the DC check by 10.

You can go exploring and you can re-assign advisors to new tasks as long as you are somewhere within your kingdom's borders (if you build a town and an aviary you can also re-assign them from neighboring regions).

Only ranking up advisors and claiming new lands personally requires you in the capital to spend time.

      >80% of the enemy's attacks hit.
      >Also, healing and money is going to be limited and the game's on a timer.
      This is bad game design.
      >But you can fix it with perfect feats and build
But you don't need to fix it in a well-made game. This is Pidgey used Sand Attack levels of cancer. Missing should be an abnormal event, not par for the course.

Why in the love of frick would you build a system on random damage avoidance over reduction? You can get shitty dice rolls. At one point, I had my PC focused down and killed in 3 attacks by a basic b***h bandit archer from a rest random event sitting in the middle of my entire fricking party just cause of constant shitty 1-4 rolls on my end and 2 of the 3 attacks were crits.

          >Does picking weapon focus on a fighter so he can connect instead skill focus knowledge world seem like it requires a far too arcane understanding of mechanics from you?
There's like 40 different weapon types in the game (for no fricking reason since most of them are fricking identical and only serve to make weapon specialized feats less generalized). A new player is going to have no fricking idea what weapon to specialize in and isn't going to just pick a random weapon to focus with one of their precious feats before they've seen a single weapon worth a damn, because if you pick a trash weapon, you've wasted a feat, and they're in limited supply.

          And I went archer.

And you fight the first boss before leveling.

And I'm not taking junk feats.

And if you NEED to take specific feats for your party to FUNCTION they shouldn't be fricking OPTIONAL because that's setting up less experienced players to fail.

Shit like Dodge for melee fighters and Point-Blank Shot and Precise shot for ranged attackers being optional are fricking insane.

This is bad game design and you shouldn't defend this bullshit.

Dodge is not mandatory for every melee character.
There is no really trash weaponry, only ones with limited itemization, but irrelevant at the point you got filtered.

If you read the list of feats and making an archer and decide to pick toughness first, I guess you failed the first challeneg of the game. Building a character is tied to the system. It's not an action game with set abilities.
Maybe let the game auto level for you? Can't be far worse. And again, go story mode.

I am not saying you did it specifically anon, I am saying the game is not responsible for making your character for you.
And I really wonder how the frick you were lv4-5 with a class that has study target and did not land hits at all. Like, just basic ass bless and study target would mean you need to roll a 10 to hit Stag boy.
If you were smart and used touch of good, even less. Reduce person would help too.

Not even counting debuffs or bring Lunzu for bard song that makes you hit harder.
Again, if you cannot build characters nor make good party composition nor utilize everything in your toolkit, play story mode.

it's not so much about builds as making good use of the spell list, the game expects you to use every relevant buff to bring your stats to the level of its overjuiced enemies. I see you have cat's grace and that's a good start but you should also have stuff like morale boosts (bard songs or bless at the very least).

              >Imagine crying about having to learn the ruleset in a PnP game.
              This isn't a PnP game.
              >It's not an 'accuracy system', it's a PnP ruleset.
Which has a (bad) accuracy system.
              >Once your character gets a few levels and you have some equipment and buffs, it stops being a problem.
Okay, but what if it were just not a problem in the first place like in good games?
              >You're too used to shitty crpgs that don't challenge you
I'm fine with being challenged. I'll usually go with max difficulty and play underleveled. it's not an issue because I can actually HIT SHIT.

Original Sin's hard as balls if you don't know what you're doing but you aren't just sat there missing every attack if your build isn't perfect and you can't be screwed by RNG.

              >Like, just basic ass bless and study target would mean you need to roll a 10 to hit Stag boy.
I haven't even fought Staglord yet. I'm talking about the fricking tutorial boss.
              >Again, if you cannot build characters nor make good party composition nor utilize everything in your toolkit, play story mode.
Your toolkit is barren at the tutorial boss.

it's not so much about builds as making good use of the spell list, the game expects you to use every relevant buff to bring your stats to the level of its overjuiced enemies. I see you have cat's grace and that's a good start but you should also have stuff like morale boosts (bard songs or bless at the very least).

              >the game expects you to use every relevant buff to bring your stats to the level of its overjuiced enemies.
I understand that. I get that the game can be played functionally if you know what you're doing and get some levels.

My point is that how the game makes things difficult for the player isn't fricking fun and creates what is at best an illusion of choice and at worst shittons of noob traps.

When only certain builds and playstyles work and without them the game is literally unplayable, there's a problem of design. When you can't hit unavoidable enemies with a starting character, that's a balance problem.

I didn't lose the fricking fight, but I didn't have fun winning it.

A character should start out functional and have to build up to keep pace with enemies, not start out bad and have to suffer through bullshit before blowing past enemies. This isn't XCOM.

Bless is 1st level spell, think jaethal comes with it? And you have study target too. Plus linzi bardsong.
Again, stick with story mode. Or conserve resources. Something.

                >Bless is 1st level spell, think jaethal comes with it? And you have study target too. Plus linzi bardsong.
I was using all this bullshit except Bless which Jaethal doesn't have, and I am telling you I just sat there missing until Amiri killed the fricker. I could clean up the trash just fine, but I couldn't hit the boss for shit.

Maybe I was just getting bad rolls, but that plays into my dice roll accuracy systems are bad complaint.

This was on Challenging, not Normal.

The game starts at character creation. How it starts is your responsibility, same for upkeep.
If you can't handle the former, you cannot handle the later.
It's a different kind of challenge which is what players of the subgenre tend to want, due to the PnP roots. Can't handle it, tough shit,. Lower the difficulty from challenging and read build guides.

I'd rather they do not dumb down the game in all aspects for morons like you, you already get options

                >The game starts at character creation.

You ask for it to not be possible to fail at character creation.
And the prologue boss is relatively non threatening (hence why you could just stand there even while missing constantly somehow). The lesson would be 'check combat log, AC values and my rolls and see if I miss mostly due to dice or something else'. Anyway, anyone who wants to hit a lot but not bother to learn the systems can again just lower the difficulty.

I learned the systems. That' why I hate them. They're bad systems.

Games should be designed around risk prevention, not risk mitigation, or else chance should play a minor role.

What are you even talking about? The Staglord is the tutorial boss.

Assassin Leader in the very first area

Are you taking about that tutorial wizard who casts mirror Image on himself? Did you really got filtered by mirror Image?

I didn't get filtered at all but sitting there missing with my entire fricking party until Amiri burned through all his Mirror Images and finally his health wasn't fricking fun.

Demon couldn't hit him for shit either. The entire damn fight only Amiri landed attacks on him.

This shit CAN'T just be me fricking up my build because
                1. I didn't
                and

I've no fricking idea how you motherfrickers could defend this bullshit. I'd genuinely rather Amiri just run in and oneshot him if the entire fight's going to turn into a cutscene anyway. Well, most people would use spells not affected by mirror image, like magic missile, send more than one attacker to negate mirror images quickly, and thus take advanatge fo flanking too, use linzi's bardsong to make it more likely to hit etc.

It has a prerequisite fricking feat. You can't fricking get it at level 1 unless you fricking play Divine Hunter or Human.
How in the frick do you not understand this is fricked? You're literally locked out of being a basic level of useful for multiple fricking levels unless you pick a specific race or subclass?

Why and how do you defend this game design. No Fun Allowed until level 3 makes sense to you?

Why in the frick do you want starting characters to be useless? Why in the frick do you want mandatory fricking feats at all? Why not just have the character get less feats in exchange for being more useful?

Why would I reload a fight I was winning?

My complaint is the fight was boring, overly long, and unfun.

                >and pretend they are insurmountable.
I WON THE FIGHT. Again, the problem isn't that it's too hard. It's that it's not fricking engaging.

Story mode was cerated for basic b***hes like you. Never get crit again!

Also I was playing on Challenging.

That map was one of the bigger maps in the game. I liked it a lot.

but you could also just play the sneaky game. Sneak in there at low level, Steal that +2 Falming EarthBreaker and get out.
Then wrekt the other weaker maps.

Low-key? There could be less weapon types and I'd be happier. Alternatively, the feat list could be more inclusive.

i don't know why a character experienced in longswords cannot properly use a shorter straight sword

          Anonymous

Because you get used to the length. That's where the +1 focus comes from. If a longsworder tried to use a shortsword, he would forget it was shorter and cut the air a foot in front of his target.

Shorter length lets you angle the short sword 90 degrees to your sword arm and gives you better poking momentum. Different techniques are applies vs longer slashing reach.

        >Alternatively, the feat list could be more inclusive.
This is a problem for me, I really wanted to make a parrying dagger carrying fencer character, but there's no real way to make it viable as you can't reasonably do weapon focus, specialization training etc. for multiple weapon types. Only game I know where something like that would be viable is Pillars, where those feats instead encompass sets of weapons.
