They're both clinging to obsolete design principles to avoid alienating the normalgays.
At least the Dualsense has a gyro and a DPad located in a usable spot instead of deliberately placing it somewhere unusable to force incompatibility across multiplats like Xbox did.
      >Muh symmetry/asymmetry
Unfortunately the ideal face of a modern controller's right side looks like this
The right analog stick is unnecessary, since gyro means that most of the time you just use it to emulate button inputs for quick turns.

        Anonymous

        >The right analog stick is unnecessary
Gyro is good for precise movement but its pain in the ass if you want bigger range of motion.

          Anonymous

Yes, and practically everything else is better at providing that than an analog stick is.
4-directional face buttons just do what flickstick does and a trackpad is more versatile.
The argument for the left analog stick is easily won, you just have the character run in a smooth circle and everyone can see the utility; there is no equivalent demonstration for the right analog stick in most situations because its function has no relation to camera control.

This controller reminded me why I loved the psx/ps2 style shoulder buttons. I can see the appeal for the few racing games that have sensitive acceleration, but god it gets tedious for every single other game in existence. The hair trigger is a godsend and I sincerely can't live without it.

        Anonymous

Honestly wish there was more 3rd party controllers that had trigger buttons and symmetrical sticks. I've been making due with using an adapter for my psx controller but the thought that its gonna wear down and get worse gets me very concerned. I can't imagine playing a lot of playstation games without it, like katamari or ape escape. Why is every 3rd party symmetrical stick controller so behind compared to all these Xbox and switch styled ones? Even the few that exist shove in shitty mushy triggers. Analog triggers are so fricking niche it baffles me that its the standard. Fricking switch doesn't even have analog and yet the controllers made for it aside from joycons still retain the shitty shape.

I want gyro but I think I'll just add it to XBOX gamepad.

buttons are in the wrong places.

DS4 vs Dualsense is entirely up to the shape you prefer. Both can do gyro and etc, a few games have been supporting actual controller features but they're pretty pointless so I'd just say go for whatever ergonomics you like more. Just be sure that you're getting a v2 DS4 if that's what you're aiming for.

        Anonymous

        >sensitive acceleration
PS2 shoulder buttons also had that because the buttons and d-pad were all pressure sensitive buttons, and in lots of driving games you had to press cross harder to accelerate.
Same with the OG Xbox face buttons.
I have no issue with modern analog triggers though. You can just get a Switch Pro controller on PC if you really need digital triggers.

The monoblock design for the controller is just a remnant from when wireless and battery technology wasn't good enough to allow for split body controllers to be employed casually.

      Where's the second stick?

      Unironically not needed.

can I pay extra for more polygons?

Subdivision surface expensive modifier, please understand.

        Anonymous

Bullshit. The second stick is for broad aiming, gyro for precise aiming. You either need a touchpad like the steam controller or a second stick.
Gyro doesn't replace the second stick.

          Anonymous

it should have had zero sticks like the original design
it's kind of unbelievable what integrity they ceded to the console cavity ridden droolers

          Anonymous

You can also just use some buttons. Flickstick basically forces the analog stick to take up the task of emulating 3 buttons.
Gyro doesn't replace the need for secondary input, but it definitely changes the requirements of whatever that thing needs to do.
          >Some means to re-orient controller without affecting gyro (SC does this by allowing you to enable/disable the gyro when you aren't touching a touchpad)
          >inputs that cause the player's view to quickly snap several degrees to the left/right
          >An input that causes the player to do a 180 degree turn
That's all it needs to do, it could be handled by the face buttons if necessary.

            Anonymous

            >toggling the face buttons between camera controls and being face buttons

Same, which is why I don't like asymmetrical controllers to begin with. Unfortunately, the Dualsense is a little fat to comfortably claw so I prefer using my DS4 for games in which I'd do it.
