The humble Dreadnought.
A veteran of innumerable tabletops. A semi-psychotic brawler. A supporting weapons platform. A living chapter relic. An older brother to his comrades. A bulwark against the darkness.
Shunned by GW so they could make bigger toys for manbabies.

I don't understand this model both in-universe and out-of-universe
OOU two missile launchers is a fricking awful loadout that's outdone by a devastator squad (and even four missile launchers is bad anyway)
IU you're squandering the potential of having a big guy with armour plating and the capacity for mixed range by giving him two dinky little missile launchers and nothing for close combat
Missile launchers used to be better back when you had more missile types and stronger volley potential.
Come 5e, they had their death knell.
Yeah but it looks cool
>it looks cool
Hard disagree. It just looks like a missile battery with legs. Not a bad concept if it was clearly remote controlled, but as a piloted thing it just seems silly. Reposition once or twice, fire off missiles… then stand around until one side wins? Lol
I like the brutalis dreadnought though, it looks cool.
BRRRRRRRRRRRRRTTTTTTTTTT
What a moronic fricking decision. The entire point of Imperial aesthetics is that they are a impractical and bulky. It's a marketing point to onboard new players. The Brutalis makes too much sense.
kek at you losers who spent thousands on "your" hobby only to get rug pulled when the corporation you helped make rich wants to bring in new whales and doesn't give a frick about your opinions.
Stop getting emotionally attached to nerdshit. The creators of the actual franchise themselves don't care, the owners of the IP don't care, they all just want as much money as possible, and everything else from design to lore is just a ploy to get your shekels.
>don't have any passions for "nerdshit"
Where the frick do you think we are
Now what on Terra is that giant a proxy for? Has to be a titan, yes?
What's with the big titty ladies on the Purple Shark?
There’s a difference between liking a hobby or enjoying a work… and being a “fan” of a corporate franchise. The former can enjoy things, take or leave new things without an intense emotional reaction, and forever look back fondly at the time they spent. The latter seethes and let’s their emotions go haywire when new products aren’t available to consoom, or when new product isn’t to their liking, or when someone else enjoys the franchise in the “wrong way” or “doesn’t belong”. It’s the sad fate of every consoomer… spending a life seething that the corporation doesn’t give a frick about you and has the gall to make money elsewhere.
What game is this? That's cool as hell
Rogue Trader
Curtis from Ramshackle Games runs a game called Helsreach at Bring Out Your Lead each year. BOYL is the premier Oldhammer event held at Foundry Miniatures
Basically he brings a load of terrain and people help, and people bring a "gang" each and roll some dice.

That's brilliant, thanks for sharing. I'd heard of bring out your lead but bloody hell this might be worth an international trip.
It's a good weekend. I mean Foundry has basically every painted GW miniature from the 80s on display too
I was in England last October and did the lead belt pilgrimage. My very first stop was foundry, and it was closed! I was gutted.
must've smelled you coming, dirty foreigner go home
New Dreads are an objective upgrade and lore will be corrected to match old dreads once they've finished replacing the last of the stunties. Please stop wasting your time on fake outrage trying to win good boi points with a demographic that exists only in your own heads.
Only you mewling here
>New Dreads are an objective upgrade
I know this is bait but this is exactly the reason why old players hate the newer dreads.
Boxnoughts were cool BECAUSE they were shitboxes, revered and cherished by their chapter for the sole fact they could just barely be kept in service while everything better than them couldn't be manufactured or maintained at any sense of scale. They were the best of what was left - relics of the chapter, demonstrating just how much both the Imperium and humanity as a whole had decayed since its height. Every dreadnought lost meant the loss of both a hero as well a piece of humanity's nigh irreplaceable technology - not of its golden age, not even of its silver age, but of its copper-plated senility. Popping out upgraded models that are direct upgrades to previous models and that can be mass produced at scale doesn't make them any better in anything but a rules sense - it just makes what was once unique and thematic into something bland and tasteless.
Somewhat related, it's legitimately crazy to me just how different players tend to understand what 40k "is" based on whether they started in 7th or 8th. The divide is almost as stark as between WHFB and AOS players, though it's not like I can blame them since GW massively changed their approach towards 40k almost as much as they did WHFB when they were planning the End Times and AOS. If the End Times wasn't as badly received as it was, I wonder if they would've went harder on their changes to 40k. People meme'd about the Age of the Emperor in early 8th but I could totally see them rolling all the Eldar into Grand Alliance Ynnari rather than seemingly dropping the whole plotline and faction out of nowhere. I really have to wonder what else was scrapped, even if it was reused later on.
I know what you mean man, before 8th barely anyone knew the full lore of the setting. Just snippets they read from the core book and their own codex. Now it’s all everyone fricking talks about
It was more fun when it was setting you could take and leave whatever you wanted from, not when it was some MCU tier canon nightmare.
What gets me is talking about lore with sigmargays they're adamant that what currently exists in the lore is perfect and you can't make any changes now, when their setting literally relies on nuking the old lore to replace it with something new.
People on nu-/tg/ are literally too dumb to understand slippity slopes.
Speaking as someone that doesn't hate AOS, if the setting A: hadn't replaced WHFB entirely and B: was approached as a giant cosmic-fantasy Your Dudes sandbox instead of an MCU tier "storyline" it'd be great. I genuinely like the idea of the weird realms and the factions within adapting to them in different ways.
As is, I think the fact modern 40K is as bad as it is shows that no matter how good or otherwise your setting is, it doesn't mean shit if you treat it like a comic book.
We haven't reach full Marvel yet, primarchs aren't yet making witty quips while Iron Man uh I mean belisarius Cawl gets into his mecha to beat down the enemy while drunk.
The infinite and the divine, much praised by /tg/, might approach that "and then tell a joke" whedonite comic shitpostery. Good thing Whedon was banished to Siberia years ago for having the audacity to like women.
He got what he fricking deserved (for being a foot fetishist)
You know what
Communism had many flaws but commieblocks/affordable housing is a human right.
Dreadnoughts are depressing
>so modified you don't really die, just live on as an angry brainstem in some slime
Half the awesomeness about the imperium is how it's a dying and decaying empire only powering through by its own inertia. Making newer, better shit goes against the foundations of the entire 40k universe.
what a boring story
>nothing changes, nothing improves, nothing gets worse, it's all just entropy mannnn
You forget that Tzeentch was there since the beginning fool
moron
You can still have all manner of story and intrigue without "main characters" doing wrestling with each other.
>Tzeentch
You watch "lore videos" don't you
>"main characters"
if their important status to the narrative doesn't matter to you then you don't really have any basis to complain at all
>"lore videos"
I play the war game on the table. I have never and will never paint a model. I got started in 9th edition. I will replace you and I will train others to replace you.
>I have never and will never paint a model
You’re missing all the fun. The tabletop game is easily the worst part of the hobby.
>argues lore changes
>claims to be a brand new table only roll player who (somehow) only cares about grey tide
Oh we're reaching new levels of intellectual dishonesty not previously know to exist
moron
The new dreads suck compared to the old ones.
Your entire post is just dripping with canned talking points and gaslighting.
That's the model that got 10-year-old me interested in 40k back in 1999.
I didn't even know that tabletop gaming was a thing yet, but I'd been painting WW2 tank models and just incidentally spotted a Space Marine Dreadnought at the hobby store and was completely overcome by how badass it was.
Same. I had played mechwarrior and was always interested in the concept but the 40K iteration was so cool
I keep hoping for a scouring box set with upscaled Mark 7 marines and a boxnaught with all the posability and weapon options of the newer HH dreadnoughts.
That GW would sideline one of the most iconic models in 40k history is insane. This is something kids playing DoW remember fondly. For most people a marine is just a marine so mkV versus mkX means nothing. A boxnought and a redemptor are dramatically different with the redemptor trying to ape the boxnought style while pretending to be more realistic so ends up worse in every way.
>dreadnought in lore: space marine veterans, if not elites, with even more armor, even more guns, and even more sheer strength that should make them on par with company commanders, if not chapter masters
>dreadnought in game: a cheap way to get assault cannons or double power fists in your heavy slot
Table top game has a lot of issues that have never been resolved because GW, or at least the foundation of 40k, was always cooler than the TableTop game themselves.
I do remember it being a terror in close combat in 3rd edition though
>sixes to hit if you have antitank weapons like meltabombs
>If you missed basically nothing could hurt you
>Pretty sure it would frick up your entire squad of infantry that either would get swept or slowly slammed into red paste
It's the strangest thing to me. Intercessors are a nothingburger compared to the disrespect given to the boxnaught, Primaris as a whole is largely being left behind, considering the switch to Tacticus keyword to denote unit compatibility and the upscaling of the Terminators instead of pushing Devastators as the "new" Terminators. Primaris is hardly a word on the lips of recent Marine releases, and the new Terminators could be mistaken for being downright reverential in their adaptation. So why do the dreadnought so dirty? The Ballistus is like of the stupidest models, even worse than Inceptors or the ATV. And really all they HAD to do was lost the knees. I could tolerate the dumbass beer gut armor.
>And really all they HAD to do was lost the knees.
This is the simplest of conversions.
It shouldn't be my problem.
Come now. I understand your sentiment but NOTHING is worse than the Invader in that lineup
Wasnt the first time this has happened. The boxnought is a shit design when compared to the original Eddie. But, no, they had do go extra grimdark with "Look! It's a coffin on legs!" shit.
What's the point of giving it a big defined waist if it can't turn?
It's for the sexy
in a setting that seems to exist to just farm out hard-ass quotes, this one goes harder than most
I know rule of cool, but why do dreadnoughts run on diesel when regular power armor runs on microfusion reactors? Isn't powering your ancient brother's life support with fossil fuels an enormous liability, especially on a spaceship? Especially when routine space travel can have you be lost at sea for months at a time.
I thought it was a turbine engine: 'noughts can run on anything that burns.
>I know rule of cool
You clearly fricking don't, because you still posted the question.
the word 'iconic' gets thrown around too much and has started to lose its value, but the dreadnought is truly iconic
I remember they were out of stock on GW's website- the only place you could buy them anymore unless you wanted to pay moronic prices on ebay, because GW made them 'online only'. I had been waiting for them to come back into stock, because I resolved to finally get one for my Dark Angels to use the upgrade sprue parts.
Then they announced they were discontinued, while they were OOS.
You guys know that you can still buy and use these, right? The 10th edition index has rules for castraferrum dreadnoughts; it's not even a legends thing.
Why do you do free advertising for this game on /tg/ if you hate it and the company that makes it hates you? Do you just not have anything else to talk about? This is like the 500th thread on this topic.
Managed to get a metal Dreadnought on eBay recently. Good lord, what a delightful chunk of pewter that thing is. Luv me Dreadnoughts.
Started building a more Dreadnought-y Redemptor counts-as/Undemptor using a Redemptor torso, styrene, bitz and some printed parts a while back. Need to print the remaining parts and start painting him.
>Don't talk to me or my son ever again.
Handing them to someone who doesnt expect it is such a treat.
>join Ganker gamefinder Black Crusade campaign threads
>spend weeks assembling characters as a party
>everyone OOC understands we are playing the bad guys
>first session, GM has us fight a loyalist dreadnought
>as we kill him he cries out to the Emperor, stands bravely against us, says he's feeling cold
>one player finally has to ask the GM to stop drawing out the fight, we're all queasy about what we did to the noble marine
>party disbands immediately after, all of us felt too bad, and never play together again
>play bad guys
>get uncomfortable for doing bad things in character
I don't know whether say it's find of sweet how you are so innocent that you were so effected or to call you a homosexual for being such a sensitive baby
Both can be true.
> using Ganker game finder
Yikes.
New dreads are literally just the old ones but a little taller because GW can afford to make them taller now. If I went back in time and showed this to 40k players back in the day, not only would the sculpters think it's cool, your moronic 10 year old self would think it was cool. Nostalgia baits you homosexuals into the shittiest takes its unreal.
>Implying they wouldn't have made them taller if they had the budget to do so
>Implying you wouldn't have loved them just as much were that the case
Take them off, grogtards
>they needed more 'budget' to make them taller
They made bigger models than the nunaughts all the time back then. You are stupid
Why did they need to be taller?
More 'generic sci-fi' profile with the angular body and the knees ruin the dehumanizing coffin theme that makes it iconic.
>and the knees ruin the dehumanizing coffin theme
>the knees
anyway, the coffin is still there
the redemptor is more in line with the castaferrum than any other dread design
Yeah naw, taller is not better here. Leviathans are bigger dreadnoughts that look cool. These are not.
you'll never understand
Well I think dreadnoughts suck and are torture devices
The white scars revere their dreadnaughts just like any other chapter
But it doesn’t mean they like using them
Funny how GW's biggest market now are transgenders and men in their 50s.
just getting into 40k myself, i dont really see a big difference between new and old dreadnoughts. i figured the main thing was that GW is just repackaging what was once a single kit into multiple kits for extra shekels, as they seem to do with everything they can these days
Love me a Chaplain Dread
vghhhh
Hideous las-cannon glow effect. Fricking beautiful basing though: how does one do that? I love the flowers springing out from under the tarmac, though not very thematic for a chaplain.
Is that a primaris revier head on a venerable? You fricking poser!
>Shunned by GW so they could make bigger toys for manbabies.
You're all paypig manchildren.
Painting an Ultras 1st company dreadnought to go with my terminators and I have a question about transfers on dreads.
Would the iconography be mirrored to match the termis with crux on the left pauldron and chapter on the right?
Or is this heresy?
Should I just follow the box art?
Tau are cooler anyway
I love the Short Profile, the compact legs & the heavy armour & stuff. I like how it isn't really a Mech-Suit, the Tomb on Legs with guns vibe is rad as hell but more then that the old Boxnaught was a vibe all to its own.
The Taller Dread is ok, not cool enough to replace the box.
Can't believe they stopped selling them though.
Dreadnoughts with heads kind of sucked though, really missed the cool part of Dreads being a life-support tomb thing marines were sealed into.
They still sell Bjorn kit, it has enough options to not look space wolfy too much
>Dreadnoughts with heads kind of sucked though, really missed the cool part of Dreads being a life-support tomb thing marines were sealed into.
I don't mind them, but I think they really worked best on Chaos Dreads. Gave them slightly more of a monstrous look as you imagine what horribly contorted fricking freak must be stuck in there behind the mask
They also reinforced the idea that things in the distant past of the Imperium were better. Even if these kinds of Chaos Dredds are debased, they're still closer to massive armored suits than the tomb on legs, and are themselves a downgrade from even more humanoid things like Contemptors from when things were still pretty good
I was okay with the Forgeworld ones with heads because the heads still looked like a mechanism, the issue was the plastic ven dread for me which just straight up has the guy's fricking head poking out in a helmet.
The pregnant bellies on new dreads look stupid. Always remember to kitbash your nu-dreads to have coffins out. Fat bellies are for nurgle worshipping homosexuals.
