That's not how 3D geometry works and the fact that you think it is tells me you're just assblasted.
If Nintendo or TPC or Gamefreak had a case to sue them, they would've done it already by now. The fact that we are day 3 into the game's EA release and nothing has happened means all of those entities have jack to push any sort of legal action against the game and they do have some of the best lawyers in the industry.

Yeah you have to do this with the topology or it's not usable in court. Textures could also be matched. But it seems they used AI to modify shit so they're safe.
I don't know about other programs. But in blender, you can change which way the triangulation goes. Here, I made this bulby type mesh myself. The leftmost one is the one I did by hand. Then, I used the triangulation option to get the other 3 results. Then, I took one of the triangular meshes, and used the tris to quad option to restore the quad topology.
So hypothetically speaking, it's possible for someone to take a mesh, convert it back to quads, then re-triangulate it differently. Of course this process isn't so clean when the mesh is more complex. Going from tris to quads could create quirks in the toplogy that the artist didn't intend. A so thus, if you introduced new quirks, then re-triangulated the mesh, you would get an even more different looking mesh.
since the pokemon mesh is already cleanly topod even if they stitched parts of different pokemon and slight moved some vertices, when retriamguling it would still result in a clean mesh

I would say there is a good mix with the intention of creating just the right controversy to get attention. Some are blatant where it is very unlikely they would have arrived at the same design by pure chance. Some are completely different, but with a shared a color pallet seemingly to intentionally draw a comparison. For example, if the teal deer were compared in grayscale, no one would think it was related. There are also some that are just regular animals, but people will still act like Nintendo invented hedgehogs and wolves since there is probably a Pokemon for every notable animal you may want to put in a game.

Do you know how much work it is to copy a model, tweak the vertexes of all the polygons, but then try to keep the same general shape as the model you copied it from? There would be no fricking point. It's pretty obvious they looked at the shape they wanted to make, made the model from scratch while hand eying it. It's why the models don't quite line up when you try to overlap them. Even when you remove the basic fluff from either design and just have the shape of whatever, it doesn't work. If Nintendo tried to sue, they might actually get laughed at, since what actual grounds are they going to sue on?

Same shape means nothing in terms of computer data. It doesn't matter if I made the same shape as someone else, you have to prove that I stole it. You have to have some way of tracking your model data and putting it back on your games. We know that Pokemon does this, there are various markers in all of the models that even tell you which game in the series they came from. It would be insanely easy for Nintendo to prove that the model was copied, especially as you have pointed out, they were on crunch for pretty much the entire dev time for this game and likely would not have scrubbed all that data to try to hide this fact. It would take just one of the hundreds of thumb drives with all of the previous models to probably find the original Pokemon models on file before they were altered as well. If Nintendo felt they had a case, they would want to get a lawsuit out as soon as possible to make sure that this valuable data was not destroyed before they could issue a search in discovery.

They legitimately might. I don't think anyone expected them to be this brazen. Until the game released and people got a better look at the pals and started looking at the meshes everyone just assumed they were the normal kind of ripoffs and nothing more. There have been loads of pokeclones and while this one definitely leaned more into being a pokemon ripoff, no other pokeclone has outright stolen pokemon assets. So why would anyone initially assume that this one had?
And you can't compare them shutting down fan games to shutting down something that is ostensibly an original IP. Fan games outright use the pokemon name. Nintendo/game freak don't have to prove anything to have grounds to go after them. But with something like palworld, they would have to prove some kind of infringement. So them not being as quick on the draw in this case isn't necessarily evidence that they don't have their lawyers working on it.
Maybe they don't sue them. Maybe they see palworld as advertising for pokemon or shutting it down as bad publicity. Maybe they think pocketpair will be able to weasel their way out by ditching the plagiarized models and don't see pursing it as worth it. All I know is that I wouldn't want to be the guy having to explain to a judge why the primarina and goodra models are in palworld if nintendo did decide to sue.

This whole "discussion" feels extremely pointless because almost no one making accusations seems interested in taking anything but the most extreme, and frankly *plainly wrong*, position.
You have people saying that they "directly lifted models", and then point to comparisons which actually show that the models are, in fact, different. Often quite similar, absolutely, but different in a way which makes them *not* a copy, and quite obviously so to anyone familiar with the matter.
Then you have people claiming that sounds are "the same", but the evidence they provide shows that they are *not* the same. Again, certainly very clearly inspired in some instances, but also not identical.
That is not to say that there couldn't be an interesting conversation to be had about the ethics of what they are doing, or that recreating almost the same style is perfectly fine. But, in order to have this discussion, you first have to establish what actually is going on and to do so you have to be truthful about it. Copying something directly is very different, both legally and ethically, from being heavily inspired by it. Arguing that the former is happening, without evidence to support it, in order to try and give your position more weight actually does the opposite.

Not that it matters, the long-term damage to Nintendo & GameFreak has already been done. PalWorld's insane success has opened the eyes to the rest of the industry: that there is an enormous market that's desperate for a good monster-tamer or Pokemon clone with open-world gameplay, multiplayer functionality, nonlinear player freedom and modernized game mechanics.
There's going to be clones - clones releasing games better than anything GameFreak or Nintendo can concoct. Nintendo won the lawsuit battle; Palworld may have died due to their pants-on-head moronic asset-flip scamming, but GameFreak & Nintendo have lost the long-term IP war (assuming they don't get their acts together - and they wont; it's fricking GameFreak after all.)
