This is the modern Super Metroid. It does most of what I expect out of the series.

This is the modern Super Metroid. It does most of what I expect out of the series. It's missing one thing, but that thing is also missing in nearly every Metroid game save for SM specifically. That makes it negligible I reckon. For everything else though, this game fricks.

        loaded question, anon
I dislike going through the same pre-set environments over and over, I don't care if the layouts of the individual floors are randomized.
any time a game is like "the first five floors have this therem then the next five floors have a different theme" and so on and the themes and enemies are static, it becomes boring as hell, especially if theres no meta-progression.
        >b-but knowlege is meta-progression
frick off. by that logic all video games have 'meta progression'

          Anonymous

i would never make that argument anyway
i think you should just give it a try anon. pirate it. noita has a lot more to offer than just the dungeon you spawn in. think of the main floors of the dungeon like a tutorial where you learn how to play the game (how to effectively dodge, how to build wands, how to find secret stuff)
and it actually does have an kind of metaprogression system through its unlockable spells and some other things that you can do during a run that qualitatively changes things (not that i think the metaprogression system itself is super impactful, as a completely fresh save file with no unlocks can go and do 99.9% of what there is to do in the game provided the player has the skill for it)

I would agree as I dislike them as well, but in this case it an intrinsic part of how the game's mechanics can work beyond the reasonably small scope of the game. See you can mod it to become linear in that sense. You know what happens? It becomes boring.

It may well be a Rogue Lite, but it is THE Rogue Lite.

i wish killing kolmi netted you with tinker with wands everywhere on every run in normal mode

its not pointless. you established that it would be nice to have a playground for wand building and i'm telling you that it exists already and its nightmare
you do not need edit wands everywhere in order to have consistent successful runs. it's called learning how to escape the holy mountain with the mountain still intact so you can backtrack and edit your wands when you need to. i open up a tunnel through the holy mountain between every floor, always, on every run

I really want to mod this game but I also want to unlock stuff legit. The problem is I fricking suck even if I understand how to make wands and stuff. 100 hours and have never been to a PW.

      Anonymous

no offense but with only 100 hours you don't know how to make wands. you're probably only just scratching the surface
the problem is that there are no teachers for this game besides like DunkOrSlam and dunk won't teach you actually useful new techniques because he refuses to use them, so if you want to get good you basically have to do it entirely on your own

        Anonymous

Sure, but I'd still I know a good bit beyond the basics. The problem is that I can never really survive long enough to get a good run going, and kind of just rush my way to the jungle in hopes of finding a wand or two with spells and modifiers to turn into a good one.

if you break out, the mountain doesnt collapse and you can return to it as many times as you want to edit your wands and any new wands you find in the next level. this is probably the strongest random seed strategy that exists. and you're able to do it every single run guaranteed starting with the first holy mountain provided you bring a tablet and know how to perform tablet telekinesis and the tablet digging method shown here

he becomes a stronger version (skoude) if you kill the initial stevari 3 times. you really should learn how to fight him, i think this is maybe the biggest cliff on the earlier part of the difficulty curve, not including wand building. the wand building is easily the hardest part of the entire game

it didn't take me that long to figure out how to loop steve to kill him without taking damage, but this shit happens when you're much further into the run, so the risk of dying is scarier there.

sometimes I get a random wand that is a cool combo

but in general I think point and shoot is pretty boring as far as magic goes. and having to swap wands, use wands that fire in random order, is just not very comfy

and pixel gimmick gets old fast. everything is just poison or fire or annoying

      Anonymous

these are beginner tier criticisms and i don't mean that in a smug way
i'm trying to say you have barely scratched the surface of what there is to find and do in this game, the pixel simulation thing is not a "gimmick", it underpins so much of the gameplay. the entire world is fully destructible so you can make your own paths. the thought of you trying to use actually use shuffle wands to do anything other than fire a single spell is funny though

      Anonymous

the point of shuffle wands is to take them to the holy mountain then strip off all the useful spells and then put them on an actually usable wand
the only reason to have a shuffle wand on hand is when it's the early game and you just need something that can cast dynamite or black hole

      >in general I think point and shoot is pretty boring as far as magic goes
Wait until you get to the level of "point, click, freeze the game because your CPU can't handle the rendering, wait a minute for the game to render, vaporize half the world" phase. That's where the real fun lies. Noita reaches almost Dwarf Fortress levels of autism in wand construction mechanics.

Make a run or two to get basic understanding of a basic control. Try to rush yourself at least toward the snow zone once to ensure, that game have different-looking zones. Then understand, that carrying a full flask of water at all times is very important, and that you need to git gud a bit by learning, how to always avoid damage from environment and enemies (it is simple in words - don't approach, don't dive into shit), but will require some muscle memory and learned reflexes to stay above, for example, dripping orbs. Then keep retrying until you'll finally understand, that snow zone/next zone after thar fricks you up royally. Then go read a guide about wand wrapping. That is where real fun begins, if you would still be into it. Also after firsr testing runs try to collect 400-600 gold on thr first level each run, but remember, that your hp is more important, than gold.
      Also explore everywhere.

There are a few little details you'll have to internalize in order to survive for more than 2-5 minutes, so prepare to get fricking REKT in your first 20+ runs. I'd say the most important knowledge is knowing which perk to pick whenever you see a RNG selection of them in the Holy Mountain. Some Anon put this tier list together, and I certainly don't fully agree with it (wtf gold is forever is great and fire immunity is fricking S+ tier) but it's an alright starting guide I guess.

afaik the issue with gold is forever is that each piece of gold is saved and simulated, this can cause serious slowdown

bombs materialized is way better than it used to be since you can change your spell inventory during a level, but the point of this tier list is for new players. you'd tell a new player to take glass cannon? do you want me to make my actual tier list?

Frick tierlist, let him try everything and find out, how with that perks he could kill himself BEFORE he would go on a long run, where either his curiosity or rng will force him to pick stuff like autofreezing stuff around him.

          Anonymous

learning the perks is probably the single most impactful thing you can do as a new player as they will be carrying your runs the majority of the time

        Anonymous

i made that quickly and i'd maybe consider changing some of them around but at a glance that looks pretty good. fire and toxic immunity are great to have but you always have a water flask and this lessens their impact by a lot. something like conc spells for a new player is way stronger than fire or toxic immunity because it means they'll likely be able to kill things past their normal depth

afaik the issue with gold is forever is that each piece of gold is saved and simulated, this can cause serious slowdown

this is precisely why gold is forever is in Z tier, because during a long run it's just polluting the absolute frick out of the size of the world file

          Anonymous

fire will instantly hit you for ~5% of your health, and continue doing so for every tick, long before you manage to get a flask out and drizzle enough to get yourself stained with it
gas fire without fire immunity is almost a run ender, and in overgrown cavern getting lit up is more dangerous than the mobs

Boring-ass game that gets stale after 20th or so run.

While actual roguelikes do require a player to have abilities and vocation to learn complex systems, they lack action part. Not that they need action part, but Noita is built around it, and requires quite a reaction and perception to have, which normal peoole tend not to.

I've seen streams where people get 50+ wins of nightmare mode in a row, but they do anything except playing the game normally, which is only possible because they dumbed it down.

Don't know what that is, and I never claimed to be an "explorer".
I did some travel overworld, once to the left where there was a bunch nothing and a giant wall, once to the right over another bunch of frick all but I at least found some temple. The travel took so much time and was so boring I never did that again.
Core loop of descending down got stale quick, so I proclaim the game boring-ass shit that has nothing going for it other than building funny wands.

I have this brainrot in Noita. I'm at the point where I can keep up very consistent win streaks but I cannot for the life of me just go to Kolmi. I need to do all of this other nonproductive, convoluted shit to scratch my itch. I've considered leaving my objectives up to a dice roll or simply putting wand concepts on the line as my motivations for playing. I always leave Hisii base extremely over prepared. I think I am going to go in to the Master of Master's fight using the "intended route" before fighting Kolmi from now on.

seems like another rain world, where the core gameplay is actually shit, but there are obsessive weirdos that think it's good because it has random disparate esoteric stuff that is perfect for the type of losers that like to waste their life on doing nothing but playing the same game over and over again and never actually seeking anything new, fulfilling and good.

also, the first red flag should have been when the moron likened it to super Metroid...then mentioned how it's not actually like super Metroid and is more like every other 2D Metroid game, not realizing how moronicly that reflects on the game because they're probably and unironic moron that somehow doesn't even understand super Metroid...or they're dishonest, and never should have mentioned super Metroid specifically in the first place.

regardless. uninteresting game. OP red flags + rougelite, guarantees it's garbage.

Imagine game where you've been like "wow this talent x actually affects spell y in a really cool way". But instead it's that with every single thing you pick up in the entire game. All traits, all spells, whenever you ever thing any possible combination "will this work?" it pretty much always does. Most of the times you end up blowing yourself up until you learn what is safe to do but it's fricking miracle of a roguelite game you will always figure something new it.

        Anonymous

Is Noita actually a roguelie? Despite labyrints' layout always refreshing for a new run, all locations are strictly positioned, size of biomes are strictly the same, all directions are strictly the same, only amount and position of earth on your way differs from run to run (and not even that hard).

          Anonymous

Like in Dead Cells you pick paths but the biomes are always the same with slight variances. Like in Binding of Isaac where you might get different layouts of rooms but you still recognize most of the rooms after a while.
What is really randomized is the wands and the spells in them that makes the run special. Like Binding of Isaac's traits affecting each other but in steroids.

          Anonymous

according to my definition, noita is not a roguelike as it has unlockable stuff between runs. though as a new player you wont know how to even take advantage of any of the unlocked shit, so it really doesn't even matter
the only thing in the entire game that exists between runs that is actually kinda gameplay affecting are the portals that send you to different locations around the world which are unlocked after you kill leviathan
if you were to clear your save file inbetween each run and then play on the daily so ANY spells can appear in your shops, it is basically roguelike
any seed no matter what "savefile progress" you have can do all quests. to me that's pretty much as good as any roguelike
but, on a slightly stricter definition, it is a roguelite (it undeniably has a meta-progression system)

the OP is mostly tongue in cheek and said as a joke, i copy and pasted it from a hollow knight thread. the "core gameplay" is the platforming shooter game that you see in the videos and gifs, but the actual DEPTH in the game comes from knowing how to set up wands. easily the hardest part of the entire game
but it is definitely inspired by super metroid, the devs even say its one of the biggest inspirations

        >Super Metroid was the only game really, that took you on detours, where you obtained a new ability, and then shortcuts back to a previous area, the shortcut most likely requiring that new ability to use, and goes right back to where you just were. Prime 2 is the only other one off the top of my head that does this in the series. I consider it to be more pivotal than sequence breaking by far.
this is what the OP of that thread meant btw. i think he is moronic

Overrated game imo, not that it's bad and not that I didn't enjoy it, I have around 200hrs. My main issue with the game is that once you get an infinite healing wand you become completely unkillable and every single task in the game becomes a trivial bore, except that stupid sun quest thing. Every boss in the game except the main one, has been trivially easy because of infinite healing. That's bad design imo.

Ok you know what, I'll cool down here and say that I probably don't know as much about this game as I thought, and as much as many other people, so I'll switch into a learning mindset.

        1. With infinite circle of healing and like 10K health, what can kill you other than falling into polymorphine (the only way I've died in god runs cause I'm spamming through the world with black holes)
        2. What's hard about a 33 orb run other than the fact that orb position randomises, which requires you to waste time running across a pre-set area.

          Anonymous

          1. you can get twitchy'd and instagib yourself (hope you got enough stainless)
you can get your resistances lowered (read: immunities can get disabled)
you can get sniped by a stray shadow sauvojen in a parallel (poly bolt spam)
i'm not gonna lie and say that polymorph isnt the main threat but there are other threats
game stability in the past meant long runs were difficult to even do with how the engine handled them, that's not really a matter of its mechanical design though it's more like code efficiency
          2. setting up for it, practicing to the point where you're even capable of pulling off all the game breaks needed, knowing all the steps to do all the shit in, and then actually going and doing it while avoiding dying (the game is extremely dangerous and one misstep can cost you the entire run)
you act like its trivial but it's really not, it takes like minimum 100 hours to figure all this out and even once you've done it, you could still just play normal runs and have a good time going through the dungeon and killing kolmi, seeing how well you actually can play the fricking game

Not the anon you're replying to but agreed on pretty much all points. It's more about journey to get to the point where's your immortal than actually achieving it. Gaining knowledge how to do so etc. You'll end up doing hundreds of runs and if you didn't like that part then I don't know why you'd keep playing in the first place.

            >you can get your resistances lowered
When you have 10K health what resistances even matter? Even though things like fire damage scale with your max HP you can still outheal pretty much anything with the healing circle.

            >shadow sauvojen
aight fair enough I forgot about him but that's one enemy in one specific area that you can avoid easily by just burrowing. Not a major threat.

            >you can get twitchy'd and instagib yourself
Not hard to avoid if you don't make fricky pierce wands. Which admitedly, many people like to do. But I've never accidentally killed myself with an overpowered wand (in a god-run scenario).

So that takes us leaveymorph, the only real threat in a god run, and the only way I've ever died. That and getting bored and stopping playing lol.

i agree that polymorph is overwhelmingly the most threatening thing
you obviously enjoy the game if you got that far, but i have to ask like
can you do it on every run?
whats your typical winrate just killing kolmi? can you win every single run?
at what point during a normal run do you decide its time to exit the dungeon and go into postgame areas?

      >Every boss in the game except the main one, has been trivially easy because of infinite healing.
I wish there were more bosses and enemies that tested higher level wand building as well, but if infinite healing is the thing you dislike in particular, why not fight the bosses before you get it? You are way more likely to be able to fight most of them before you get an infinite healing set-up during a typical run

        Anonymous

That's a fair point if I wanted to I defenitley could fight bosses and explore other areas without infinite healing. But the thing is, with the way I play the game naturally going down the main path, I pretty much always find either healing bolt or healing circle, and then I naturally go kill Alchemist because the Greek spells are incredibly useful so it's a natural priority. I would have to deliberately forgo optimal strategy to essentially have a balanced experience. I'd have to throw my healing spells on the ground. It annoys me in games when I have to gimp myself to get a challenging well-balanced experience. I want to be fighting to survive, and nerfing myself kills that mindset.

Why assume going down the main path is the optimal strategy? I understand that it seems "natural" but you also state:
          >Greek spells are incredibly useful so it's a natural priority
So why not just kill alchemist whenever you have the opportunity instead of clearing all of the main floors first? E. g., going up under the bridge in Snowy Depths if you have teleport bolt or some other means of fast travel. That might just allow you to clear the main biomes faster than proceeding down "naturally" anyways

yeah sometimes I do that too. Just depenends how long it takes me to get teleport and a decent wand setup.

teleport has to be the most important spell in the game

Travel is a must, but I'm pretty sure you can kill alchemist with a 10x magic missile wand obtainable in Mines, so perhaps consider lowering your requirements in that regard

And if you're greedy for the sake of being greedy, every time you get Unstable Crystal as a start, I'd recommend grabbing Curse of Greed and farm enemies in the mines with them because kills from the crystals count as trick kills, setting you up for the rest of the run, break the green crystal in the Holy Mountain afterwards.
You can always go back up to the mines after if you want to explore it more.

you probably wont be able to search around very well for hearts which sucks

I used to take +hearts so seriously but ever since I became better at managing the Heart Mage trick, I've taken them much less seriously. My priorities from the start of the run are Teleportatium(s) and Ambrosia for the Hour Glass Room and the Heart Mage trick respectively.
But even then, I'd still say it's worth it. The only think you'd be missing from the mines would be a potential black hole wand and hearts. A bunch of gold and the Pacifist Chest makes it worth it for me personally.

fair i guess, i have never tried doing it because i usually just get enough gold from fully exploring the mines and killing stevari

i like to kill the bosses sometimes but for me its just about trying to be as consistent as possible with my ability to win (kill kolmi)
the early game is so fun to me

slimeball gives 1.1x (stacking) projectile speed, so multicasting it with a black hole makes the black hole dig further. see background of this pic for how far it goes with just 2

I think you don't need multicasting, afair bonuses apply to wand passively all the time.

it should only apply to the spell block that it's cast in
also as far as i can tell it stacks multiplicatively so having 3 is much better than having 2
luckily there is a 3rd one on the coal pits holy mountain but i cant afford it yet so im gonna go to fungal now
