Their last remaining competitors dropped out of the race entirely, *and* they combined their handheld and main consoles into one device for that generation, presumably combining the sales of both to some degree. Gaming has become a lot bigger than what it was during the ps2s llifespan. Honestly it's impressive how the ps2 still has the sales record after almost 2 decades.
Also Nintendo's handhelds have always sold good. It was their home consoles that always struggled. That's the reason why Nintendo left that sector behind after the wiiu and gave their handheld a docked mode.
The switch had no competition for years and years before the steam deck came out. And even then I don't think the deck would eat into the switch audience.

>more customers in general as the gamer market today includes many adults buying for themselves rather than for their kids
>Internet ads and widespread marketing campaigns with wider reach than just tv ads
>e-celeb culture, where hundreds of people preorder every new gadget on the market to unbox it, then buy 2 more to smash them for reaction videos, then do the same for new editions or special collector's models
And all that is without even accounting for the fact that yes, they absolutely could have messed with the numbers and nobody but an insider at a fairly high position would be able to dispute it with actual proof.

We've known for years that most of the growth in the video game industry comes first and foremost from mobile games followed by pc games, with console games being in last place, as the most stagnant.
Your analogy doesn't work since people in India and China (Actually everywhere that isn't North America, West Europe, Japan, and South Korea) don't play games on consoles, opting for mobile and pc instead.
I don't think anything can change this, it's probably impossible for a console to ever sell that much more than the ps2, you'll never see a console sell 200 million units even if you live another 50 years.
In this context, the Switch is highly succesful, since it is clearly approaching the upper limit of what is realistically possible to sell.
Simple no games since PS3
Xbox 360 literally pull the rug underneath them costing them millions as they desperately gave the devs all the money to make pretty games (Last of Us) and managed to barely make it to 2nd place, then when Xbox DRM was in full display for Xbone, and Nintendo Fumbled with the Wii U the PS4 gave them false pretense but to make sure they couldn't be bamboozled threw more money for exclusives, even paid Activision 10 years of CoD off Nintendo Hardware, paid Capcom to keep Hi Resolution Textures off Monster Hunter World PC, and despite having a clear runway with the PS4 was so obsessed they even paid devs to remove Nintendo Switch Logos off multiplat games simply out of fear.
Nintendo might not spend a lot of money on what they do, but they do make a lot of money, Microsoft might spend a lot of money and save a lot of money by being your everyday corporation, but Sony only really has licenses and movies to keep them afloat as their Playstation department has burned money, trust, and security all because haha Nintendo makes kids game.
