>The church and/or government are evil >Everything is beautiful at all times >Amnesia >Childhood friend of the opposite sex >Elves and fairies maybe >Dragons are the smartest sons of b***hes on Earth >Goblins are basically animals >Flying boats
>The church and/or government are evil
Combining both is cheating. Also Dragon Quest, the archetypical JRPG, has a church that isn't evil. >Everything is beautiful at all times
Never happens >Amnesia
Eh, it's a 50/50. Usually only if the main character is a self-insert or custom character, like in DQXI or XBCX. >Childhood friend of the opposite sex
Of the same sex* >Elves and fairies
Elves yes, fairies only occasionally. >Dragons are the smartest sons of b***hes on Earth
See also: WRPGs >Goblins are basically animals
See also: WRPGs >Flying boats
Fair, but that's mainly a Squeenix + Skies of Arcadia thing.
I am a sucker for most Fantasy races/tropes out there be it eastern or western. Still some new or not often used playable races are welcome like insects or birds.
Feel free to spoonfeed me some games where you can play them.

Love this shit
Back in the 80s and 90s people weren't afraid of having truly original fantasy settings and it's something that doesn't happen very often anymore. I'd rather have something completely generic than something generic trying to pretend it's something new like having orc and elves, but they're called something different.
Browse through any 80s-90s Sword & Sorcery or Sci Fi B-Movies and you will change your mind. I recommend Deathstalker 2.
You can have magic in sci-fi settings. In fact, loads of sci-fi series have both
JRPGs and WRPGs both shamelessly rip off D&D, which itself is derived from Tolkein's work. In Japan's case, it's because of Dragon Quest, a derivative of Ultima, which is a derivative of D&D.
They both take inspiration sure but they've both taken different paths moving forward, WRPGs with system depth and immersive sims while JRPGS with rule of cool and stand-out characterization. Ironically, I believe Gygax wouldn't like either one has gone kek.
I want to shamelessly put goblins in my fantasy setting but am trying to make them look a little different. I've ended up with some sort of goblin/kobold hybrid that has a snout and big ears.

I know, but because of that people tried harder to think of more original settings and like I said it's preferable to be totally generic instead of being generic and pretending to not be just because elves and orcs have new names.
>game is full of fantasy races >game claims racism and strife exists between the races >this is never ever shown literally every city and settlement is a peaceful multicultural smorgasbord of races living in a generic late middle ages city even if some of the races supposedly have traits that would make living in such an environment unpleasant if not impossible
There's also media that's in a fantasy setting but they have sci-fi tier machines and weaponry. Therefore, it's put in the bin of science fantasy. Specify next time.
its only because many fantasy writers are lazy hacks - its so easy to just reuse tolkien-based classes and have 'magic' as a copeout explanation for everything and every mechanic etc not even bothering with coherency or fundamental logic
That's because everyone will just equate stuff to elves/dwarves/orcs, even if they have nothing to do with those fantasy tropes but for the vaguest similar themes. >strong barbarians? must be orcs >elegant mages? must be elves >isolationist industrialists? must be dwarves
But then again, you can also mix in many different traits so people are less likely to draw those comparisons.
Sci-fi is just real life races made into their own species. You've got humans (white people), some israelite adjacent, some black adjacent, and some Asian adjacent.
One of the many reason I love Planescape Torment. Fantasy setting that even today still feels fresh and unique with none of that ripped-off Tolkien shit.
Not at the moment, no
if it's not broken don't fix it
I like it
What's the Japanese equivalent? Giant swords? Monsters beyond le compression, waifus and le grimdark?
Fantasy sci-fi with bright grass
16 year old angst lords with the fate of the universe on their shoulders surrounded by the biggest titted bawds known in the galaxy
Correct.
flying mascot with annoying voice
An rpg system, that's it.
Dragon Quest.

Ye Star Wars basically
Asherons call had some cool creatures and races
Thanks brothers
Xenoblade Chronicles X has the Orphean. You can't play them, though.
Teenaged heroes rebelling against authority figures. It's YA novels but vidya.
Killing God

DEMON KINGS
DEMON KINGS
THE DEMON LORD?!
DEMON KINGS
Maou-sama....
Kino, especially if they have 4 heavenly knights.
>Urban fantasy
>High fantasy that rips off Dragon Quest
>Pokemon
That's it from Japan
Japanese equivalent is the exact same thing g because they copy all their shit from kino western games.
I want to shamelessly put goblins in my fantasy setting but am trying to make them look a little different. I've ended up with some sort of goblin/kobold hybrid that has a snout and big ears.
Pretty much, but shorter and with much bigger ears.
Just make their torsos their heads and noone will say shit.
Haha, that was unironically one of my first drafts.

There were just as many, proportionally, derivative fantasy settings in the 80s and 90s as there are nowadays.
I know, but because of that people tried harder to think of more original settings and like I said it's preferable to be totally generic instead of being generic and pretending to not be just because elves and orcs have new names.
dark crystal flopped anon and it killed jim henson
The guy in OP's pic is from a porn parody of Spiderman, by the way

Why bother at this point?
Because not every game can be TES levels of racism.
>Because not every game can be TES levels of racism.
Because not every game director can be Todd levels of based.
Technically that would be racialism rather than racism.
iirc Nords & orcs also have lower INT, it feels fair for the warriors races to be like that
Hylian = Human
Zora = Elf
Goron = Dwarf
Kokiri = Hobbit
Gerudo = Ogre
>but muh wrpg
Why fix what isn't broken?
WRPGs are beyond broken.
Others are even more broken so uh...
JRPGs are flourishing while WRPGs are practically dead.
Sadly not a single good jrpg was made to this day
Xenoblade Chronicles
Xenoblade Chronicles X
Xenoblade Chronicles 3
Anon he said "good" not grotesque.
>Xenoblade Chronicles
>Grotesque
Shit homie, your IQ is lower than Sena's
isnt the point of this scene is that he sees better without his glasses now?
I doubt most people have watched the movie
All I've gotten from this thread so far is how superior sci-fi is to fantasy.
That's because you like futurism more than you do mysticism.
You can have magic in sci-fi settings. In fact, loads of sci-fi series have both
Technically would be called science fantasy rather than sci-fi.
It's just sci-fi with fantasy elements.
There's also media that's in a fantasy setting but they have sci-fi tier machines and weaponry. Therefore, it's put in the bin of science fantasy. Specify next time.

cliche fantasy copypasting tolkien is boring and sucks
nothing to discuss here
>Japanese Original RPG Fictional Universe
>It's pure kino.
Where at the point where a fantasy universe that was humans only would ironically be relatively original.
why didn't this happen to sci-fi?
Sci-fi is just real life races made into their own species. You've got humans (white people), some israelite adjacent, some black adjacent, and some Asian adjacent.
even with rgb humans, it's never the same level of sameness across different games as the orc-elf-goblin-dwarf thing.
It did almost all sci fies have kool aid humans
>fundamental archetypes are universal constants
whoa
wrpg is not a genre, reminder that the wrpg term was made up by a gay russian pedo because he wasn't able to pay final fantasy as a kid

ftfy
that looks like a prompt to me
Both have shitty basic worlds
Both also have great and intresting worlds
Here's a test: Does pic have a western or eastern vibe for an RPG?the answer is western because the characterization is not highlighted
The west have warhammer fantasy and Fear&hunger
The east has elden ring and SEQUEL
What is the western equivalent of Sengoku Rance or even SiniSistar? Literally nothing.
I havent played those so i dont care
How the frick are you on Ganker and still haven't even tried out Sengoku Rance?
Out of spite
