I watched this video the other day and it's genuinely impressive how talented Nintendo are. I liked when they showed the development footage of the game just collapsing under the strain. Then I remind myself if any other developer tried to make this game, they would just release it in a completely broken state like that, because fixing it would be beyond them.

God I love this game so much. In a better alternate history if this game got the same amount of accolades as a Zelda game, The industry would be pushing unique interactions, player freedom and fully destructible environments instead the measure of one's hardware is about pushing graphical fidelity at the expensive of everything else. I retrospect I judged Red Faction Armageddon too harshly for not being a direct follow up to this game. Its not as good, but honestly its still a lot of fun.
Back then I thought this was a first, humble taste of what is to come soon from videogames.
Instead 7th gen happened which removd all advancements to AI, physics and artstyle and actualyl degraded further over time.

Personally I was excited for BotW when it was first announced then the actual game was a disappointment. They threw the baby out with the bathwater, SS was too handholdy and linear but BotW went too far in the other direction and dumped out what I liked about Zelda. Only 4 short dungeons, all the meaningful progression happens in the intro. Then TotK took 6 years to come out and was basically an asset flip, insane amount of recycled content from BotW, didn't even take place in a unique world like MM. The franchise has turned into open world slop when all I wanted was a refined version of the classic formula.
They even killed off 2D so the employees could all work on BotW/TotK, so I have nothing to look forward to in this franchise anymore.

TotK has you building vehicles in open gameplay, in real-time, WITHIN the game engine, all elements containing their own weight, gravitational potential, elemental and physical attributes combining and interacting with each seamlessly.
If you can't understand the difference - or how complicated it must have been to code this - then you really need to stay in school or perhaps even just have a nice day to save the human race from the burden you might breed one day.
the reason games like Besiege and From the Depths disable physics while building isn't because it's hard not to, it's because dealing with physics while building is annoying for the player

I’ve been playing vidya on multiple platforms like 8-bit consoles and DOS computers since the early 90’s, BotW was a game that really impressed me with its level of detail plus the huge living and breathing world. TotK pretty much doubled down on the amount of detail and crazy shit that just happen naturally. Nintendo was able to pull this off in underpowered hardware and on top of that they delivered a complete, finished product without GaaS monetization. It’s funny how I’ve heard multiple times how GaaS and MTX shit was the only way for publishers to make enough money to produce AAA games but Nintendo makes a product of much higher quality than the latest AAA western slop.

That's all fine and dandy, but nothing ever asks you to take advantage of this. The game is afraid of challenging you. In a game about building vehicles, you'd expect a staunch difficulty curve to meet you for every increase of potential you are given. Like you have new wheels, new weapons, or new mastery or terrain, so now the game has to push back on you.
TOTK lacks this essentially progressive difficulty curve.

From the first korok and the first shrine, all the way to the last ones, they never ask you to employ any kind of advanced strategem. The dungeons are the same, being 4-5 rooms slapped together, oftentimes just letting you skip everything with a convenient hoverbike. Enemies can best be described as loot piñatas that really only exist for grinding. How many wacky webms have you seen of some guy making an overly elaborate fire penis robot contraption, and all he does is send it to kill some trash mobs? You could accomplish the same thing by just mashing your sword repeatedly, it's not like they employ tactics or act smart. It's just not that impressive.

Oh yeah, walking down a hallway and watching a cutscene are definitely Dark Souls moments.
I think people who say Garry's Mod physics are comparable to TotK haven't played Gmod in a long time. Every time you stick two things together in gmod the physics start to spaz out. It's a chore to get anything to work. TotK physics work perfectly almost every time. Also, the fact that you have to harken back to 2006 to find physics even similar to it speaks to how much we have stagnated in everything but graphics and animation. Only other games with comparable physics are either indie or from 15 years ago.
TotK is so good it has ruined all other games for me.
I find myself wanting to explore other open world ganes but being hit with invisible walls, linearity and gated progression.
I find myself wandering off the beaten path and finding nothing there to discover.
I find myself peering into bottomless chasms feeling disappointed that I can't dive down there and explore.
I find myself dealing with baby tier combat scenarios and wondering why I can't use all my inventory to create new scenario-specific items and weapons.
I find myself wishing I could create my own solutions to puzzles and challenges using my own wits and resources.
I find myself disappointed that the game's interconnected systems don't turn every event into a unique set, experienced by me alone.
I find myself limited by the sheer inactive sterilisation of the world around me.
Nintendo have just raised the bar too damn high and now I can't enjoy anything else. Video games have peaked with TotK.

It's a valid criticism though. The fact that you can't do anything to NPCs (murder or otherwise) shows that it provides less freedom than a lot of WRPGs. And in general you don't have much of a permanent impact on the world in BotW/TotK outside of scripted quests. Even open world survival games let you build shit that persists within the world, everything in BotW/TotK despawns.

Furthermore, this line of thought can be extended to all vidcons in which the player controls a character (hence, roleplaying), though I cringe slightly at the thought of such mundane vidcons as Madden being RPGs, as they do not even include exotic weaponry such as the tonfa.
When Zelda first began in the 80s, it was labeled as a RPG simply because it had a lot in common with RPGS of the time.

God I love this game so much. In a better alternate history if this game got the same amount of accolades as a Zelda game, The industry would be pushing unique interactions, player freedom and fully destructible environments instead the measure of one's hardware is about pushing graphical fidelity at the expensive of everything else. Personally I was excited for BotW when it was first announced then the actual game was a disappointment. They threw the baby out with the bathwater, SS was too handholdy and linear but BotW went too far in the other direction and dumped out what I liked about Zelda. Only 4 short dungeons, all the meaningful progression happens in the intro. Then TotK took 6 years to come out and was basically an asset flip, insane amount of recycled content from BotW, didn't even take place in a unique world like MM. I’ve been playing vidya on multiple platforms like 8-bit consoles and DOS computers since the early 90’s, BotW was a game that really impressed me with its level of detail plus the huge living and breathing world. TotK pretty much doubled down on the amount of detail and crazy shit that just happen naturally. Nintendo was able to pull this off in underpowered hardware and on top of that they delivered a complete, finished product without GaaS monetization. It’s funny how I’ve heard multiple times how GaaS and MTX shit was the only way for publishers to make enough money to produce AAA games but Nintendo makes a product of much higher quality than the latest AAA western slop.

That's all fine and dandy, but nothing ever asks you to take advantage of this. The game is afraid of challenging you. In a game about building vehicles, you'd expect a staunch difficulty curve to meet you for every increase of potential you are given. Like you have new wheels, new weapons, or new mastery or terrain, so now the game has to push back on you.
TOTK lacks this essentially progressive difficulty curve.

From the first korok and the first shrine, all the way to the last ones, they never ask you to employ any kind of advanced strategem. The dungeons are the same, being 4-5 rooms slapped together, oftentimes just letting you skip everything with a convenient hoverbike. Enemies can best be described as loot piñatas that really only exist for grinding. How many wacky webms have you seen of some guy making an overly elaborate fire penis robot contraption, and all he does is send it to kill some trash mobs? You could accomplish the same thing by just mashing your sword repeatedly, it's not like they employ tactics or act smart. It's just not that impressive.

I think people who say Garry's Mod physics are comparable to TotK haven't played Gmod in a long time. Every time you stick two things together in gmod the physics start to spaz out. It's a chore to get anything to work. TotK physics work perfectly almost every time. Also, the fact that you have to harken back to 2006 to find physics even similar to it speaks to how much we have stagnated in everything but graphics and animation. Only other games with comparable physics are either indie or from 15 years ago.

20 years ago half-life 2 did a physics seesaw puzzle and it was a big moment for gaming.
gmod took advantage of hl2 physics and let you create functional vehicles, and totk copied this to an exact but not nearly as much depth.

It's a valid criticism though. The fact that you can't do anything to NPCs (murder or otherwise) shows that it provides less freedom than a lot of WRPGs. And in general you don't have much of a permanent impact on the world in BotW/TotK outside of scripted quests. Even open world survival games let you build shit that persists within the world, everything in BotW/TotK despawns.

In the course of my career as a vidcon specialist (my own coinage, spend it wisely), I have never seen such blatant and frankly sickening ignorance as that exhibited by the "people" (if, in fact, they are homosexual sapiens at all, as their intelligence implies elsewise) that claim that Zelda is not an RPG. There is nothing that Shigeru "Shiggy" Miyamoto could possibly do to make the vidcon any more of an RPG as it meets every single criterion for being one, particularly that it takes place in an imaginary realm with a fantastical beastiary, the damsel villain ratio is at or above standards, and that the core emphasis of the gameplay is on bedazzling all foes with impeccable swords and sorcery. Furthermore, this line of thought can be extended to all vidcons in which the player controls a character (hence, roleplaying), though I cringe slightly at the thought of such mundane vidcons as Madden being RPGs, as they do not even include exotic weaponry such as the tonfa.
When Zelda first began in the 80s, it was labeled as a RPG simply because it had a lot in common with RPGS of the time.
