Ubisoft: AI advancements is going to greatly reduce development time

> “AI works best when there is a lot of data available that represent the tasks you’re targeting,” states Yves Jacquier, Executive Director of Ubisoft La Forge. “As such, repetitive tasks are particularly suited to be generalized and automated.” By using motion capture data to train AI models, realisticand fluid character animation will be generated.
>Jacquier explains, “AI also has the potential to assist in automating the animation workflow, reducing the time and effort required by animators. Another prototype we developed at La Forge is Zoobuilder, which helps create 3D animations for animals from videos using machine learning. We’ve been using generative AI in voice synthesis, DeepMotion, text-to-speech and now Ghostwriter, our in-house tool created to assist scriptwriters. We’re seeing fast progress in terms of adoption internally in areas like ideation or concept art.
>We expect a similar trend in programming with assistance for writing code or finding the potential source of a bug and proposing a fix. We can expect the use of AI assistants to rise and progressively become an integral part of our everyday routine, going beyond basic functions to handle intricate tasks, such as assisting with coding and executing complex commands.”
>Being able to ask Unity AI, ‘How do I make a Match 3 game?’ It lists it out in steps for you. Getting that type of help accelerates creators on whatever part of their journey, whether they’re a starter, intermediate or expert.

Ubisoft has always been one of the most soulless game companies, so it makes sense that they'd be one of the first to become completely run by AI. The Ass Creed factory will run itself.

You'd be stupid not to do this. I don't think it will result in a drop in quality overall, I think quality will rise.

all it means is that you'll be able to produce slightly different animations more cheaply. this helps if your game has hundreds of npcs that aren't supposed to be synchronized in the way they move and behave, which happens if you only have the budget for like 3 idle animations.

in that sense, it can improve "quality". until someone decides this is also good enough for the main characters whose animations are suspiciously similar to characters from other games and lack individual style.

and that of course is not new; the koreans have been doing it to anime for 20 years with computerized generation tools. you might say the modern anime is "cleaner" and more consistent than hand-drawn cels from the 90s, but that's why they're also now soulless samefaces in every show. even the move to 3D graphics, using modeling tools, and away from hand-drawn sprites, is also reflective of this "evolution". it means everything moves toward the average. you get less trash, but you also get fewer standouts, because once the tools exist, even the competent artists are going to feel the pressure to use them to save time, and now you've lost something from the end products that you actually care about, in exchange for improving bad games that won't actually become good.

It will never work because you don't want your in-game NPC to be able to say anything or you will get autists spending hours talking to it to make it say controversial shit to spread around social media for updoots.
What will likely happen is the use of AI to generate very large dialogue trees very quickly that someone can then trim down into something consistently coherent yet still extremely big.
