Those completely and utterly obscure iceberg entries bordering on being downright unsolvable. A literal fiction teeming with rich backstories. The hidden facts and trivia potential that would make Silent Hill look bad. It honestly fucking hurts knowing that I'll never truly know everything there is to know about Resident Evil, understand it at a deep level, and have countless nights examining every detail of every room in every game. I'd do fucking ANYTHING for the chance to grasp a full understanding of Resident Evil. A N Y T H I N G. And the fact that I can't is quite honestly too much to fucking bear. Why would Capcom and Shinji Mikami create something so astoundingly mysterious? To fucking tantalize us? Fucking laugh in our faces?! Give us a good slap in the dick and call it a day? Honestly guys, and I'm dead serious here, I just fucking can't anymore.
The desire to understand, the need to comprehend, any way you put it, none of it has ever been felt this intense before in my entire life of playing games and consuming fictional universes. I would read every file several times over, and that's only the start. I would memorize the layouts of every map down the last pixel just because I can. I would extract the character models and thoroughly examine the fabric of their clothing like it was nobody's business. I would even go as far as to play the games with my eyes closed just to test my knowledge. God, Jesus, all the gods listening and Buddha, all I ask for is a chance to know everything there is to know about Resident Evil, beyond the limitation. And I'm talking Raging Boner Burst here. There are no words that exist to describe my immense desire to understand all the little details of this one of a kind franchise, Resident Evil, also known as Biohazard (バイオハザード Baiohazādo) in Japan.
I just want a series who doesn't cannibalize it's own lore. I guess Metroid comes close but that's only because the series moves at a glaciers pace and only got it's 5th official timeline game with Dread (And even then they all ignore the spinoffs and Other M).
That's what I liked about pre 4 RE. Everything was just a sort of Rashomon of different stories all revolving around one disaster. you didn;t need to constantly jerk off Chris because to make a new RE all you had to do was look at another part of Raccoon City or one of Umbrella's tertiary shitholes like Europe or Rochefort.
But now? I can't place it but it's a revolving door of increasingly more useless one off characters, Chris Wank and addendums to Umbrella's incompetence. I don't know how to say RE "lore" is a big mess of wasted characters yet still somehow whored out but that's how I feel.
The problem is with every entry we more firmly establish that Chris, Leon, Jill, and Claire are "main characters." AKA these 4 people are completely invincible. The early appeal is that these characters were human and the only reason they got to be the stars of their games was because they got lucky in the midst of dozens of people who didn't. It's not like Jill was the only one who got specialized STARS training, there was a full team of them but they weren't as lucky as her. But now it's like the Fast and Furious series. The survivors have gone from being just survivors to being ultra spies that have survived multiple Raccoon City tier disasters. If Raccoon City didn't kill Leon and Spain didn't kill Leon and Europe didn't kill Leon and China didn't kill Leon then what will?
Also it highlights the fact that these characters are getting up there in years. Is Chris just expected to do this forever? No one in the world can take up Jill's mantle? Why would you connect with any tertiary character that also features Chris? You know going in they won't matter or will die. Sheva has never come back. Helena fell off the face of the earth. Ethan had every opportunity to be a new gen hero and he died.
Successs breeds more success. They survive, get better training, go on to have more success. At least that was a good excuse for Leon in 4 and Chris in 5. Age really should've slowed them down, so anything after that is MCism. Jill gets a gene mod handwave for the latter now.
I really feel like their stories should've stopped after 4 and 5. Maybe they can take a command or mentorship role but field work should change over to new characters. Because then it have to manufacture reasons why they ended up in zombie hot zones yet again. Like Leon forgetting how zombies work after the president turned. Or Chris turning into a amnesiac drunk because yet another team connected to him died off
