AAA will jump on when there's enough money to be made for their massive development costs, it's not hard to understand. Some one has to make sacrifices for nice things to exist in the world.

because AAA VR isn't profitable. That's why these optional first person modes in flat games like RE Village are appealing to me. If we get more of these I'm willing to rebuy games like Skyrim VR for that feature alone. I could never get the VR mods working well on the few games I tried it on. Something always felt off and I can't be assed to be tweaking stuff for every game I play. Much rather the devs make VR modes that at least work decently.

I'm never buying VR garbage scam ever again, all it is was early access hardware.

Now you need $2000+ to get the best of the best and then only find out it wasn't the best, thanks for alpha testing, pay $1000 more to upgrade %50 off.

      Anonymous

Yeah that's what happens when you buy the cutting edge of technology, that's what it's always been.

A quest 2 is almost on par with this and they're like 300 bucks and they have built in wireless for PC link. Minus the eye tracking though so you'll need a beefy PC for good visuals.

Although HL:alyx seems to run just fine on my gtx1070 with the quest 2 so I'm not sure what kind of witchcraft valve is doing.

Valve's source engines are really dated but the lack of new tech gives good frame rates. The assets are so high quality you don't notice.

Since they're bringing their games over to PC, what are the chances this would have PC support as well?
You can already use dualshock/sense on PC. Shit's practically a glorified controller with screen attached.

      >what are the chances this would have PC support as well?

The cable is just USB-C apparently so hopefully they release the drivers or source for it so people can roll their own software.

I think they also know that there's no market overlap between PC VR and PSVR so we wouldn't buy a playstation anyways, but we would pay for the headset, hopefully that influences them.

        Anonymous

Yeah, if it's priced decently and if the foveated rendering works properly on pc I can see a number of pcvr players buying the headset just to go with their pc.

i question how durable thei foveated rendering system will be. seems like something that has high probility of malfunctioning on hardware that likely wot let you bypass or disable it.

eyetracking. plus playstaton shit starts fuking up royally the more updates they have so anything that adds any hiccups your going to feel 100x more while in vr. thats why low res is so much better than high res with jank cause that jank makes you feel epileptic even if you aint

the hardware component would be eye tracking and any delays (will probably work well at launch and get worse over time as per all sony devices) will play a huge role. theres a reason the industry all planed for foveated rendering but evey one of them abandoned it. not sure the reason tho but I guess sony is going to show us why

Why would I buy PSVR let alone a PS5 just to play some shitty VR games in a locked ecosystem on what is going to demonstrably be a middling headset? I'd rather just get any other headset.

              >valve deckard
              Any DECade now guys!
Also I don't see how eye-tracking is really that relevant in VR besides auto-adjusting the lenses, which means also more advanced lenses and thus points of failure. Even Foveated rendering seems largely pointless and creates failure points in distracting LOD changes and potential stuttering from quick movements in games where this would decrease load, but also introduce more visual "noise" ontop of the response time of the displays.

                Anonymous

As for auto adjusting focal depth, they have a solution that purely electronic with no moving parts.

Assuming foveating rendering works, you need eye tracking for that. I haven't looked it up, but I suppose you can also lower LODs and texture detail of objects the player isn't looking at.

Being able to track eye movement is huge for social immersion.

Then there's all the unrealized gameplay potential you get from knowing what the player is or isn't looking at. We can also use eye tracking for HID and menus so you'll look at things instead of using a mouse or your hands.

Basically you are terminally unimaginative, I'm so sorry

                >Being able to track eye movement is huge for social immersion.
Like what? People knowing even more that you're looking at the tits on someone's character model more obvious than it already is? You are sorely mistaken, Zuckerberg, if you think normal people are sitting around in VR.
                >unrealized gameplay potential you get from knowing what the player is or isn't looking at
Like what for example? That's already possible in most every facet unless you want cheap shitty jumpscares that spasm on different parts of the screen by very small degrees when you aren't picture-perfect looking at them. Which also means more advanced development for a niche feature that NEEDS a specific function to even work and thus cut out most of the VR market, thus they literally won't be developed unless it's a loss-leader hoping that there is more that follows. Which has never ever been the case in most any software.
                >We can also use eye tracking for HID and menus so you'll look at things instead of using a mouse or your hands.
That doesn't seem like an improvement and lowers immersion and interaction. The only reason it "works" in dead space is because it's a novel concept and you aren't sitting their tilting your head like an ape to look at the menu, and instead are watching someone else do it. And opens the door to glitches and errors as well with the most minor calibration error.

rumble was a niche feature at one point and then it became standard, so you never know what will catch on and what wont. It just needs the software support. I hope haptic feedback becomes the standard because I really like the dual sense's HD rumble. Switch already mostly has it so its just Xbox that needs to get on board.

gt isnt eve the standard anymore when it comes to racing sims. for vr anything that doesnt use mods is obsolete. real question is if contractors will be ported to psvr2 cause that has non pc required mods and my guess is sony being a publisher would be against that meaning psvr2 users miss out on the most adaptable pvp shooter. literally getting new everything like every week instead of waiting for a 10 year dev cycle just to be disapointed and still have to spend hundreds on dlc for the full game

      >not a fucking add-on for a console

Being this much of a goyim where you purposely ask for closed ecosystems to be locked out of.

The best future for VR is for it to become just another peripheral like monitors, universal and can be made by anyone and work with anything once some standards are set in place.

That doesn't seem to add up well with wireless, though, which is way better than wired once you've tried it.

          Anonymous

Why? Do you have wireless headphones? Are they tied to a playstation or particular cellphone?

They use bluetooth which is a universal wireless standard. VR headsets can have the same thing.

what bar is raised, horizons is a lowerd bar. you know who raised the bar. Praydog bringing all unreal games to vr you know who will miss out... psvr2 users. theyll still be waiting for quest games to be slowly ported and pay double the price for them.

Those games are broken janky half attempts and really do not sell VR well especially when the visuals glitch out half the time when you turn too fast or move the flashlight too fast in RE2. It's stuff like that which turns the majority of people off of VR. My friend still thought that VR was about snap turning and teleporting because that's what they introduced to the whole world 5 years ago and it looked like shit.

The majority of people don't want to deal with that bullshit / don't have the mental capacity to even go looking for answers on forums when it stops working every other week.

They literally do not even know VR exists outside of the mainstream marketing sony and others like them do and they won't spend their money on a product that does not have a massive name behind them that they can trust.

          >Do you even know what a Quest 2 is?

Yeah a shitty cellphone strapped to a good VR headset. Mobile VR is fucking stupid, the games look like shit and are limited to small arcade experiences and it makes the headset uncomfortable as fuck.

Sony is heading in the right direction. People aren't going to shell out $800 to play games that look like they're made for cellphones and they aren't going to build a $2000 gaming PC to try high end VR. A decently capable console with optional VR is the way to mass adoption.

            Anonymous

The two things that's making mobile VR stupid right now are:

            1)tracking does not work outside
2)current gen headsets don't have good AR

Once you can play laser tag or whatever with your normie friends it will change. It will be the Wii of the 2020's

ps5 and psvr2 would easily near 2k (prolly 1500) gpu prices have crashe meaning you can build a good pc for less than 1k again. except you have wireless you have mods and you escape a closed ecosystem with no games

              Anonymous

You think sony is going to sell the headset for $1000?

GPU prices haven't crashed, AMD prices are normal for the end of a generation and garden gnomevidia is still wayy above MSRP for their good cards. You need a 3070 at least to have any hope of running the last gen headsets and that alone costs $600 USD which is more than a PS5.

Add a minimum $300 CPU, $100 mobo, $100 PSU, $100 ram, $60 case and then you have the peripherals on top and then add the price of a headset.

People can stomach the console payment model which is like 2 installments of $500 spaced a couple years apart, one for the console and one for the headset.

everything you said is wrong. shit a 1060 is more than suffcient for 90% of vr excluding maybe no mans sky. you dont need a 300$ cpu. mine was like 150$ and its only ever using max 20% of its power, eth switching away from being mineble by gpu so gpu prices have crashed. literally zero reason to buy new, sonys headst will easily be 700 but considering questjust raised the priceand sony raised to console price 1k wouldnt surprise me

                >sonys headst will easily be 700

Console pricing doesn't work like that. They pick a number they think consumers will pay for the idea of it, then target the hardware to that price point. Why would it be $300 more than their last offering? Do they think people will pay $300 more for VR now when oculus has made the public expect more for less?

                Anonymous

due to the amount that was packed in. $700 would probably be them taking a loss

                Anonymous

Did they release specs? The video looks like its comparable to the oculus with eye tracking and better external cameras that are still black and white. If anything they should be competive with oculus pricing because the playstation does the heavy lifting, the onboard computing only needs to be powerful enough for the environment

its basically cambria minus color cams and wireless. cambria manu cost is like 800. add in foveated rendering youre in 1k territory easily. this was a very poor decision by sony. theyre either taking a huge loss in each sale or theyre going to be sitting on inventory they cant move. maybe if they release a hanheld that the psvr2 can plug into might help but they handicapped themselves I dont expect them to dig themselves outta this one. theyre going to e irrelevant the next decade if they cant release a standalone in the next 2 years

                Anonymous

doesn't cambria also use cameras on controllers? Looking at the rings on the controllers these are light tracked.

Also when you drop wireless you drop a battery too.

Sorry I just don't think eye tracking would take near oculus tier hardware to $700. I mean all these have to be sold at a loss, but I'm talking about what they can get away selling it for. Cambria is a enterprise headset, a quest 3 or pro would be big trouble for sony if they priced $700

                Anonymous

Yeah, it does, Cambria uses I think three cameras per controller to help with tracking.

                Yeah, I suppose so, honestly.
A lot of it just seems like the standard for now, but all put in one package, with the only stand outs being sony's controller haptics and the dynamic foveated rendering, which is admittedly a really nice feature for a console vr headset, I won't be surprised if it's quickly surpassed. It sounds like sony plans to focus on games and software for their VR though, but with how many they have for their mainline system I'm not sure what all we'll actually be seeing long term.

            >shitty cellphone
It can play RE4 or Doom3 Wireless and still be used as highend vr device, your shit 800$ console is only slightly better than that "cellphone" and will get btfo when Quest3 is released with better tracking and more power for half that price.

it shoulda been standalone or tied to a handheld. (wired to handheld but since that can go in tour pocket technically wireless since you have full range. sony woulda been the perfect brand for this especially since they have a built in handheld audience that has no product from sony this round. also gets around hardware shortages and would give consumers a way to onboard to a ps5 insteadof a pc (which is where vr users are turning to after they complete the quest library)

wireless is massively overrated. I use Quest 2 wired to PC most of the time and don't feel it as a negative. If you have enough space for roomscale then fine but I don't. Also I did try getting a wifi 6 router but the one I got sucked balls and kept dropping connection so I returned it. Might try another one later but not if its going to be unstable.

        Anonymous

Do you sit down or stand up?

Also define "room scale". Wireless was a massive benefit to me just standing in the same spot. I haven't tried wired with a tether though. But I imagine you could only rotate so many times before that became a problem.

I've got about 6 feet around in my room where my PC is. Standing mostly. I prefer to turn with sticks instead of my body because its just easier physically. I also think crouching is physically exhausting after several hours of doing it so I'd rather just use the buttons most of the time. I dont think I've gotten tangled in a long time and can only imagine someone doing that if they are running around the room.

preferences I guess. I got RE4VR and played it wirelessly but still resorted to the same scheme because that's what I'm used to. I like snap turning because its quick and still immersive enough because its a set amount you can predict and get used to. I wouldn't be bothered by the 1 wire from PSVR2 though because that's exactly how I use my Quest 2.

        >Also I did try getting a wifi 6 router but the one I got sucked balls and kept dropping connection

So I did quite a bit of research before buying mine, it seems that some of the TP link routers did a hardware downgrade a year ago using some new wireless AX chipset which does not work with the quest at all. From what I've read wireless AX across the board is pretty hit or miss with the quest 2.

I bought an old ASUS wireless AC router instead which has 1300Mbps on the 5Ghz channel which the quest uses and this seems to be at the top end of what the quest needs.

I also keep it in the same room as the quest and it's dedicated only for the quest.

          Anonymous

You know what I think it was actually TP Link. It was also more of a problem with the router itself though because it kept dropping the wired connections too. I'll keep that in mind thanks.

stay the fuck away from the Netgear Nighthawk AX4 Wi-Fi 6 AX3000. garbage firmware. I saw it cheap for 50$ and ruined my wireless Quest experience. got a NETGEAR - AX1800 Wi-Fi 6 instead, completely seamless, no drops, and the latency felt like i was wired the entire time

You guys should also do a wireless scan of your neighborhood to see which wifi channels are being used the most and then set the router to use a different channel. You can get free wifi analyzer apps for your phone.

I made sure my main router and my quest 2 router are using different channels so they don't interfere with each other.

so what's the fucking point of the wireless feature then, stupid?

Because with wireless you have no tethering range to reach the end of connected to your pc, can't damage the stupid cable after 6 months to a year and have to rma your whole headset for it, and don't have to so much as think about it.
It just completely disconnects you from this stupid issue that shouldn't even be a problem anymore, hell, display port is usually on the back of pc towers, which forces you to bother rummaging around down there to plug it in.

Why would you even want wired?

Yeah, no. I'm not going to support more locked down bullshit. My Index has served me well and I'll wait for the next VR hardware update that we've been getting small leaks about here. Its a pity Sony couldn't figure out it would be better to get a top tier VR system that uses open standards and is fully compatible with PC (using OpenVR/SteamVR among other APIs etc) in addition to working with their shitbox . They could sell it to people who wanted nothing to do with a PS5, much like how Microsoft sells fuckloads more games on Steam vs Windows Store / Xbox app and plenty of people use the Xbox gamepad as the default one because they made it PC compatible and with a cross platform open XInput standard years ago. Come on Sony, don't make another stupid mistake - if they had the brains they could have put out open source drivers during the Dual Shock 2 and 3 era and have basically run the whole peripheral game.
