Most G1 most mons are very stocky and slightly dinosauric/monstrous in appearance, with just a bit of friendliness mixed in so kids aren't scared by them. Modern Pokémon are clearly designed to be plushies first and creatures second. I think part of it is the old designs had to be drawn on an 16x16 pixel grid whilst modern ones don't, but there is also a definite shift away from them being slightly uglycute
they also have incredibly distinct designs
you could recolor the three bottom ones so that the left was fire, middle was water, and right was grass and it wouldn't look out of place. try recoloring charmander to look like a grass type, or squirtle to look like a fire type.
charmander is the most easily changeable of that group, bulbasaur is well
you could maybe pass off bulbasaur as a fire type but he's the onlyone I could see not being "right" if you tried to make him grass, the other 2 would be easy

plus he's a salamander, which is traditionally associated with fire
you could redesign him as a grass or water type but you'd have to make drastic changes to his overall design. meanwhile, you can just recolor the new pokemon and boom, new type.

The first E4 run is the the halfway point. You don't beat the game until the second E4 run, which requires you going through Kanto at least once. Regardless, the only G2 pokemon exclusive to Kanto are Honkcrow, Houndour, and Slugma. Only the Houndour line is any good

It's what they intended though, that's why you can't get it until then. G2 doesn't have bonus hidden legendaries like the Birds in 1, because the three dogs have a mandatory story introduction. Larvitar is meant to fill that role.
Furthermore, you can get a Dratini in Johto before beating the E4 for the first time. In fact, it's easier to get because you only need a Good Rod.
You have to remember G2 was meant more to be a G1: Definitive Edition. It's not meant to stand on its own, it was meant to be the end of the franchise.

Pokemon had a far larger market share in 1999 than it does today, even though they clock a greater absolute profit margin than back then. For every 10 new people who have access to Pokemon, only 5 actually get into the franchise. Also, it should be noted that the majority of Pokemon players are over the age of 20 nowadays, little kids don't care about the franchise anymore and haven't for a decade. That's why the majority of Pokemon's profits these days come from collector merchandise rather than the games; stuff bought by adult millennials.

I blame the anime. Prior to being reworked after SW '97, Gold/Silver and the original games took place in Japan and had a more grounded setting where Pokemon were actual monsters. Then the anime took off and the games now follow it's shonen fantasy world and have Pokemon as moronic furries that repeat their names or gods. It also doesn't help that each game has essentially just been a reskin of the same stale formula with arguably worse designs each time.
I seriously don't know why they felt the need to make the little fire bird a constant part of Skeledirge's design aside from having a unique move. Without it, it looks halfway decent.

That was never a thing, even during Gen 1. Never understood where the 'Pokemon are supposed to be animals' thing came from, unless they literally consider pet rocks to be animals thanks to Geodude. They've always been build as these freaks of nature that even in universe they don't truly understand what they are or where the frick they come from, but just happen to exist.
Yes, in the sense that you're not going to see cobra or field mouse in Pokemon's world, instead it's Arbok and Dedene. That's what they mean. Pokemon are the 'animals', these monsters that exist in many shapes and forms, some even manmade. Plus Pokemon's own personal lore has changed a lot since the early days of the series, with Gen IX basically confirming that Pokemon have always existed and that our 'real world' animals never have in their universe.

There's a lot of things wrong with gen one but they're still extremely replayable games despite being broken. Especially at the time there genuinely was nothing else like it. But they're very easy to pick up and play to this day, you're just hating. Biggest complaint with gen 1 is the sprite quality, which was somewhat adjusted for Yellow but the back sprites were still fricked up. Still, even the old sprites have their charm.
God, I still remember being 5 years old, getting pokemon blue edition and evolving my charmander into this abomination...

Most G1 most mons are very stocky and slightly dinosauric/monstrous in appearance, with just a bit of friendliness mixed in so kids aren't scared by them. Modern Pokémon are clearly designed to be plushies first and creatures second. I think part of it is the old designs had to be drawn on an 16x16 pixel grid whilst modern ones don't, but there is also a definite shift away from them being slightly uglycute
they also have incredibly distinct designs
you could recolor the three bottom ones so that the left was fire, middle was water, and right was grass and it wouldn't look out of place. try recoloring charmander to look like a grass type, or squirtle to look like a fire type.
charmander is the most easily changeable of that group, bulbasaur is well

The first E4 run is the the halfway point. You don't beat the game until the second E4 run, which requires you going through Kanto at least once. Regardless, the only G2 pokemon exclusive to Kanto are Honkcrow, Houndour, and Slugma. Only the Houndour line is any good

Furthermore, you can get a Dratini in Johto before beating the E4 for the first time. In fact, it's easier to get because you only need a Good Rod.
You have to remember G2 was meant more to be a G1: Definitive Edition. It's not meant to stand on its own, it was meant to be the end of the franchise.

I blame the anime. Prior to being reworked after SW '97, Gold/Silver and the original games took place in Japan and had a more grounded setting where Pokemon were actual monsters. Then the anime took off and the games now follow it's shonen fantasy world and have Pokemon as moronic furries that repeat their names or gods. It also doesn't help that each game has essentially just been a reskin of the same stale formula with arguably worse designs each time.

There's a lot of things wrong with gen one but they're still extremely replayable games despite being broken. Especially at the time there genuinely was nothing else like it. But they're very easy to pick up and play to this day, you're just hating. Biggest complaint with gen 1 is the sprite quality, which was somewhat adjusted for Yellow but the back sprites were still fricked up. Still, even the old sprites have their charm.
God, I still remember being 5 years old, getting pokemon blue edition and evolving my charmander into this abomination...
