    >still liked it
    >looked up how to git gud and how dodge offset works
    >decided I'd go through it again but better and with 100% item completion
    >still haven't done so
    >never even touched Bayo 2
I still got this one because it looks fun as hell and I popped it in to redeem my gold points, I sampled it up to the start of episode 1 and it seems pretty good but frick am I not at all ready to play it fully. Into the ol' backlog pile it goes.

Same except I'm staring my Bayo 1 playthrough right now. Not sure if I'll go for 100% in Bayo 1 and 2 or just beat them once and get to 3.

Go 100% in Bayo 1, these games aren't meant to be played and dropped, you're supposed to master them.

This. You should ultimately go for 100% but be aware there is actually a lot to do / unlock in it. For a 2009 action game it offered a crapton of replayability.

No, I meant sale, which they do still do sometimes. Usually only about 30% off at max, but that's still cheaper than 60 bucks. The age of "Nintendo NEVER has sales" hasn't been a thing for the entire duration of the Switch's lifespan.

Bayonetta 1 had a fairly strict score system and had tons of secret missions that show up in the most frick you circumstances where you essentially have to either look at a guide or backtrack every few minutes to do the secret mission or extra combat encounter that appeared, and you got punished HEAVILY for missing optional combat encounters with the score
2 and 3 improve upon this by making the optional encounters and secret missions far less aids to find

Equipping weapons to hands and feet was also limited in what it could do. Equipping one weapon at a time completely unrestricts what your combos can do for every individual input. Also you can have combo sequences that are completely unique to that weapon. There's more freedom in combat now than there ever was before.

Nero plays way better than Viola. Nero at least plays like Dante if he was stuck with Rebellion, with a few extra loves, and has the devil hand gimmick.
Viola has a weapon, she kind of plays like a stripped down DMC3 Vergil. No accessories. No Demon skills. It's far more stripped down. I know Dante has the style switching so he has far more depth, but he comes at the halfway point and feels like a more natural extension as "better Nero". Where as Viola is nothing like Bayonetta, while playing worse.

DMC4 Trish is a better comparison. Both her and Viola have sword movesets and barehanded ones that are used when the sword is thrown. Viola's 360K and double forward K are just like Trish's roundtrips too.

                Anonymous

I haven't played Trish in DMC4 SE so thanks for the context. Only reason why I made that comparison is because I remember in 3, Vergil could throw the sword and you could use some basic hand to hand combat skills.

              Anonymous

Viola only plays worse if you can't parry, outside of that she does some things better than Bayonetta does and you have to be smarter about how to fight enemies. Nero is just a weapon slot that could've gone to Dante.

No, it isn't even close. Demon slave does similar damage compared to bayonettas normal attacks. Not to mention demons can die and literally turn against you if it's overused. UC was a press this button and instantly clear the screen of all threats mechanic with 0 downsides to it.

Zoom your camera out in options and turn off auto tracking. As far as graphics go haven't had any issues with performance when summoning demons. Regardless the graphical and performance standard will be on yuzu and ryujinx when all bugs are ironed out so this isn't an issue either. Just don't be poor and have a pc.

        >Demon slave does similar damage compared to bayonettas normal attacks
Really? They deal just a bit more damage and are easier to pull off because you can just pop them next to any big enemy without worrying about any close range attack. It's just smacking them with more damage from afar with no draw back other than avoiding range attacks and maybe the FEW situations that your summon gets enraged.

Yeah, keep in mind on harder difficulties they're near useless because of enemy aggression. The idea platinum wants to achieve here is not for you to sit in the corner dancing. They want you to be attacking in tandem with your demons by queuing attacks and using combo enders.

I think bayonetta 2 has lgbtq+ tendecies because they cut the main's hair short in a way to say "grills strong",i think it is a pathetic attempt to emulate the dom mommy from the first game, but nontheless it was an attempt and as such I am dissapointed that they ruined one of the last game with a good female protagonist.

The levels are really fun. They don't look as nice as 1 and 2's levels, but I find them more fun to explore and find secrets in, and there's a nice big variety and good backgrounds and set elements.

Wonder if something happened with my playtime or something. It says I've played 9 hours but I only just finished chapter 5, Viola's first chapter. I've done the side missions too and try and find all secrets I can though so some levels can get really long.

I've decided to check some stuff in the Egypt world area and at first I thought the devs were lazy with the graphics with only using real world ones, but many are altered, some obvious with adding moon symbolism for Bayonetta with Baal's head stuff and some had some of the imagery was changed more subtly, maybe to reference Viola. I really like the detail and charm in the areas.

Unironically the biggest frame dips are during the into before fighting begins on the cruise ship. Once the fighting starts the framerate fixes its self. No fricking clue why the first few scenes with Bayo and Enzo are so bad.

Watch the Digital Foundry video. The game has very poor performance and rarely hits 60. Hovering 40-50 even when in areas with nothing going on.

Honestly in the first couple chapters when they’re going balls to the wall with chaos and shit happening everywhere yeah the frame rate and compression go a little nuts but after that it’s been surprisingly mostly smooth sailing. But I also only just got the train bayo summon/power/costume

Pretty early on but the on rails Gomorrah shit felt fricking awful. No idea why Kamiya insists on preventing this series from reaching perfection by forcing in these gimmicky poorly programmed segments every fricking time. It should be common sense if your gimmicks aren’t equally as fun as your core gameplay loop don’t make them a mandatory thing that takes you out of the core gameplay loop.

There's hardly any. One of the problems re engine games share is the complete lack of physics, not even a hit of tech like havoc. They all feel so stale. Pitting Bayonetta against DMC really isn’t favorable towards Bayonetta so you might want to choose a better example.

I mean it’s fair to do so but DMC has always been king in that regard. Witch Time has always made Bayo a more entry level action game with a much lower skill ceiling.

You don't know what you're talking about. Witch time isn't even available on on the highest difficulties in bayonetta and NSIC has always been a harder mode than DMD.

I’m a huge Bayo fan but why are we pretending Bayo has good level design? Bayo has always been more like DMC than not. Levels are largely straightforward paths to more fights because that’s the draw. Some have been worse in that regard like DMCV but ultimately there’s never been stellar shit in these games besides fighting

      Anonymous

      >Bayo has always been more like DMC than not. Levels are largely straightforward paths to more fights because that’s the draw.
Man I wish this was the case. We usually get a shooting segment, Space Harrier, sand platforming, riding a giant spider with bad controls, a visual novel, weight puzzles, and rock paper scissors between each fight.
DMC least has the honestly of just battle arenas, I wish Bayonetta had more levels like that. I enjoy and love the variety in Bayonetta, but 1 and 2 just double down on this genre bending mentality that Kamiya had with DMC1.

I meant more level design wise. I agree the genre bending shit is out of hand in Bayo but the individual levels it just feels like splitting hairs between the series

Idk for me that IS good level design. The set pieces are pretty, there's variety with a couple puzzles here and there, and it doesn't waste my time. My main problem with DMCV's levels is that they're ugly as frick and either empty buildings or copy pasted world tree shit.

Only problem I'm having so far is that the enemies are kinda bland and boring, conceptually and visually. And the plot isn't that interesting to follow, either. 2 had that whole "rescue your best friend from hell" that directly made you engage with it, in here we're just going to dying words and having a fun time collecting the chaos emeralds, just doesn't get you into the adventure tbh

Bayonetta 3 is Overrated and Watered Down. Nintendo Switch Review. After 8 years since Bayonetta 2, Platinum Games have finally managed to release the long anticipated Bayonetta 3. But has such a large passage of time degraded the game's combat and design? (The answer is yes). Unlike every other review of this game you will see on the internet, I am actually going to evaluate Bayonetta 3 on the basis of its combat and level design, rather than talking endlessly about the character models, story, and how awesome the summoning system is. Another aspect that sets this review apart is that, historically, the Bayonetta series has been lavished with unconditional positive reguard by critics and fans for decades, for better and for worse. And while I also appreciate the series (especially Bayonetta 1), I do think it has its share of flaws that have not only been ignored, but encouraged and intensified over the years. The result is what we have today, Bayonetta 3. A third entrance into the series that minimizes combat, streamlines combos and playstyle, and tones down whatever edge the series started with. In the end what we are left with is a decent practically action RPG feeling game (like Astral Chain or Nier Automata) that is going to win big with game journalists and casual Nintendo fans, but is absolutely going to leave behind a feeling of emptiness and bordom for the more hardcore character action fans (such as myself). Right now the game is available on Nintendo Switch, PS3, Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii U, and Sega Dreamcast. Sadly no PC port has been announced and probably is not likely due to the series now being under Nintendo's thumb in more ways than one.

Just got the Madama summon and the game feels strange so far. The really laggy weave endings and the demon summoning just feels like it’s getting away from the core of the series and going too cinematic and bloated and getting away from the snappy satisfying origin. Hopefully it’s just an adjustment period.

No, that's not how it works. The demons do slightly more damage than bayonetta with the downside that if you use them too much they turn against you. And if you attempt to spam them by standing in the corner they will just die on higher difficulties due to sheer enemy aggression. The also get get killed instantly by many bosses pretty much proving you're supposed to use them as combo extenders and enders.

What? Unbranded climax essentially forces you into building up magic and pressing g it to clear room because pyre platinum requirements are balanced around it. It's stronger than any other option you that have available to you. On top of that the enemies randomly hit you with an RNG parry that stops you from having fun with your combos. It's worse than bayonetta 1 in every way except maybe graphics.

I though I'd hate them before release but now I think they're the only truly good gimmick section in the game so far. They're short and contained to their own levels so they don't feel too annoying or intrusive like the ones in the main levels.

I just made it to Japan world and the story is moving at a breakneck pace, I love it. It's like huge enemies and over the top set pieces back to back. When Gahmorra had boats on his feet for skis I knew this was going to be a treat. This game is unapologetically batshit crazy. That said, this game has a lot of new systems and I have no idea what I am doing. I feel like I just wing it through every fight and keep winning somehow. I need to slow down and actually figure this game out so I can feel like my actions are intentionally and I am in control of my character.

why is the story in this game so fricking cringe
all the characters are fricking parodies of themselves and it's so fricking moronic and melodramatic

I liked Transformers Devastation more than this game, to be perfectly honest. It actually expanded upon Bayonetta's combat without adding gimmicks. It felt natural.
Probably the best combat system Platinum has ever made after Bayonetta 1 and TW101.

      Anonymous

TW101 had a combat system? I played nothing but Pikmin, Gradius, looked at my Wii-U pad to twist gears, and mashed QTEs.

did you play on easy? W101 requires you to learn the combat or you spend most of the game picking up your own scattered army endlessly.

Awaiting the day Nintendo acquired Platinum so they can work with Monolith Soft to create a hybrid between the XBX skill and progression systems and Platinum's action game template.

XB3 probably sold the best of any of the games and its combat system is already bordering on being a proper action game like 2's was.
XBX with combat handled by Platinum would be a Revengeance-tier miracle game

Revengeance had shit combat and people only remember it for the presentation, which was admittedly amazing.

I'm going back to Bayo 1 to finish that first, how do you get good? Legit I still can't deal with Jeanne consistently, is there anywhere where I can practice combos in this game? Bird form is broken against big bosses btw their HP melts. Which Accessories are the best to bring? Right now using the "witch time when damaged" and "enrage" ones. Should I do Hard/Very Hard/Climax without worrying about rank for now?

I'm playing on the Switch not a lot of time to practice there...
Alright I'll get the Moon over the witch time damaged

Jeanne can be beaten with nothing but PKP and PPKP with the guns.

It's not that I can't beat Jeanne it's either I take my time with her and get Gold in Timer or try to force through and get silver in damage...

You can beat her and get Ultra Plat with just guns. Just holding down your buttons, stay at range and use dodge offset.

Dodge offset aka hold attack button - dodge - hold/press next atrack button in combo
Use magic/ranged attack to destroy enemy armor. The less hp enemy has the less chance it will parry you
Pppkk to trip over himanoid enemies
I used wt on hit and parry accessories
Press select during loading to enter practice mode

Moon of Mahaa-Kalaa is by far the best item in the game.

        I'll get it

No wonder you're having trouble if you don't use dodge offset. It's a lot easier than it looks, just hold down an attack button and then press dodge, then hold down another button.

Literally just dodge offset and PKP since that is a short combo ranged wicked weave.

It literally trivializes most of the content due to the range and speed, including Jeanne battles.

There are a shit ton of "minigames" in that one that you have to go through just like in TW101 except it's way less cancerous. I don't know why.

why are action games obsessed with making you play as different charactes

I appreciate the variety IF they play well

Most of these games don’t have the budget or creativity to have varied and interesting levels so they just toss you a shallower character that one intern worked on and throw you through the same levels backwards

I played it but there was major cutscene desync and occasional crashing so you probably need a decent PC to run it well rather than my 5 year old laptop.

    My only issues are:
    1. the lock on system is probably the worst one Platinum has ever produced. It is borderline unacceptable
    2. the camera has an extremely hard time handling the constant changes in scale

Other than that, yes, this is the best Bayonetta has been.

  121. 2 years ago

Only thing I dislike about the combat is that enemies will attack when not shown on the camera. So sometimes an enemy will attack you from behind without any warning which hurts your score. I only had the problem when close to a corner of a battle area or the area is smaller than normal but still.

    I'm enjoying it a ton
I like how this game puts a lot more options for when you break an enemy's composure, like being able to have gammorah grab-bite them and stuff.
I also like how Viola is a fricking nerd loser. Like she's not meant to be cool, she's a weeb who decided a samurai sword would be her witch weapon and is hyper-fixated on a weird anime with a cat mascot and is taking selfies by herself in different locations

    >Viola is a witch in training and needs a mentor and also literally needs a teacher because she needs to go to school

Genuinely bizarre decision, Jeanne could have also eased people into playing Bayo 4 without Bayonetta with her similar play style

I know the story is secondary to enjoyment for this game but who even wrote this one?
There were some rather bizarre directions taken with some of the characters?

Was it Bingo and Kamiya again or is it different people listed in the credits?
