Nintendo found no negative from not attending at all for the past 3 years so they just see it as a money sink now.

No way you could have had an event like e3 in the middle of covid, you would end up with it being a superspreder event and that's nit a good look for e3.

1.3 million Americans died of covid.
Read: All-Cause Mortality during the peak of the pandemic was 1.3 million deaths higher compared to previous periods.

You know how they get that figure? They IGNORE the cause of death and just count bodies. And just counting the dead bodies, SOMETHING killed 1.3 million extra Americans during the pandemic. And that's with a sharp decline in motor vehicle accidents and violent crime on the streets because people were staying home.

That's not "the cold". That's a big deal. The elites just wanted lots of uneducated morons to die to control the population.

This is bad because E3 always forced Nintendo to show new stuff. Now we are down to just 2 Directs a year. This is giving them free reign to just do dick all for all of summer.

because the E3 lets you play demos of games before anyone else

Again, why would they waste money installing kiosks and create areas to play demos when they could easily put demos on their digital stores?

That's implying that I'd want to go to California, pay whatever exorbitant fee to get into E3, hope they announce a game I'd be excited for, hope that they have a playable demo, wait in line for three hours to play said demo for five minutes, all while surrounded by a nightmare of noise and lights and corporate homosexualry.

Or they could release the demo digitally.

        Anonymous

No. It let's journos, retailers, and select elites play demos. E3 was a product of an Era where the industry was niche and you needed to build interest at an event because otherwise they might not stock your game. These days retail companies just stock whatever major publishers want them to.

It's been horrendous for the industry, but publishers don't want to admit that pre-orders have been down across the board.

The average person has no interest in Gamescom nor Geoff's failed E3 called Summer Game Fest. So as a result, the previews for games are released at different times, and the total viewership is massively down.

Was E3 horrid? Of course, their corruption hurt everyone from AAA to indie developers with their Microsoft/Sony moneyhatting. When they demanded that Nintendo show real games instead of children's games, Nintendo left, then other developers left, somehow thinking their fanbase was as deranged as Nintendo's is. That's when things started going wrong for the industry.

      Anonymous

Bad. Having one big event with every game was a huge plus to promotion. Yes it's true that Microsoft and Sony and Nintendo can all massively promote all they want independently. But you lose that chance of catching someone who might not have been interested in your stuff before. You also miss the chance of getting, say, an Xbox owner to tune into Sony's E3 press conference out of curiosity, because now it's not all one big event anymore and they're already not paying specific separate attention to Sony, but they might pay attention to one big event like E3.

It's also just disappointing for people like me who enjoyed watching E3 every year. Even when it was shit, and the past few years especially were mostly shit when it wasn't just cancelled, it was fun just to laugh at cringe. E3 fail montages were a cornerstone of the wider gaming community, not just specifically Nintendo fans or PlayStation fans. Even if it was kinda ass, the loss of the E3 tradition is a huge loss for gaming as a community, symbolic of its homogenized absorption into the "content" vortex.

this. I watched e3 every year since like 2005. Lots of lesser known studios generated hype and got large investments. We do not need games media or games journalism anymore. Devs can talk directly to their audiences over Twitter. Reviews are better handled by userscores and Youtube essays. Most games also evolve over time with regular updates and DLC, making reviews pointless.

Good, because E3 is old-school advertising propped up by a lie: that we need that sort of thing in the internet era. We're long past the days when journalists had to do actual legwork to get news and see cool stuff to report back for the masses, and the sooner the old-style media events die, the sooner companies will just put the trailers and shit on their own website or youtube channel whatever and consumers can browse the info at their leisure, which is the obvious future that they are avoiding kicking and screaming because they want to control the timing of ads as much as possible and manufacture hype.

It's evidence that the industry has irrevocably changed due to a large number of factors

Take Hi-Fi Rush, shadowdropped on the day of its announcement and it blew up like crazy simply due to the instantaneous accessibility of social media, imagine the Saturn release if they'd had access to this kind of communication back then. We're at a point where general games journalism is worse simply because you don't NEED it anymore, anything you want to know about anything is at the tip of your finger whenever you want it through Twitter or Reddit or whatever news article gets shoved at you via Google and what's left is a bunch of shlock and hateclick articles written by people that could give less of a shit as long as they're making a buck

remember when sony "won" e3 in 2015?
      they won e3 by

It's bad for gaming culture as a whole. E3 was the only time when everyone got together for one big event. So many legendary moments in gaming history happened at e3. It's not man, come on. Gaming culture has already changed without E3. E3 has been stagnant and couldn't adapt to the times. They were fricked over by gaming trends like streaming to make them irrelevant. Covid was like the nail in the coffin

It died a natural death but it was still a great thing for the video game industry and the fact the industry has moved past the point where it needs e3 is really sad.

Geoff knew what the frick he was doing with the Game Awards. The dude shilled and made the stream accessible to literally every fricking streaming service imaginable and fricking hyped that fricking shit up hard though. E3 does nothing.

              >Geoff knew what the frick he was doing with the Game Awards.
And yet the Game Awards, even as the closest thing to E3 that isn't E3, still has far fewer games shown and games shown less in-depth than E3. Frick the lack of an actual show floor alone is a huge detriment.

The Game Awards can be cool, but it's not even the same kind of advertising.
At the game awards you mostly see the industry's big players (smaller studios are also relatively ignored at the game awards versus e3) try to show off one big hit each, with some of Keighley's indie darlings interspersed between, and then that's kind of it.
It's not like E3 that has all the publishers make a broad marketing catalogue to represent the broad future of their publishing. With whatever games big and small that they've got coming, alongside live demos of said products.

Yes of fricking course it's been exciting when the big hits have been revealed at the game awards. But how in the world can you unironically make the claim that E3 does nothing while arguing in the favour of the game awards?

Or they would do a giant smoke and mirrors presentation full of hype multiplats and shit that wouldn't be released for years and then everyone would start saying they "won" E3, like they did in 2015 where they announced FF7R a multiplat that wouldn't be released for another 5 years, and a trailer for a kickstarter campaign for Shenmue 3 which was also multiplat.

E3 has largely suffered from an identity crisis in the last decade or so. It's meant to be a trade show -- and you can debate how good it is at being that -- but started to veer off into being a marketing event or even a fanfest. I remember when the losers are NeoGAF (at a time before EvilLore got cancelled and ResetERA existed) where they were whinging about how they were denied entry and it's like "Why would forum moderators be at a fricking trade show?"
You can see how badly it's gone off the rails when people say things like "Nintendo hasn't been at E3 for ages; they do Directs." This in spite of the fact that Nintendo has usually had the largest booth on the show floor. But people equate E3 with the press conferences, the marketing direct to consumers.
Go back and watch some of the original E3s -- which remember, spawned from video games being treated as a joke at CES events -- and look at how they are presented. Look at CES (pic related) -- itself having its own issues with people dropping it and bringing into the question the value of trade shows in 2023 the year of our Lord -- and compare it to the fricking theme park that E3 looks like. Is all of that necessary to say to some Wal-Mart buyers: "Hey, we've got some kick ass games coming out, and we think you should order a bunch of stock. Come play it and see for yourself"?
Let E3 as people perceive it die, and let it go back to what it should be.

I think the E3 woke corruption happens gradually, first someone highlights a social issue they should talk about to appeal or avoid criticism for not including it.
Then next year they go "we already are this woke, lets add on top"
And eventually just start getting trannies show up and awards for social impact
you have no leadership that knows what to do to to fix things and eventually people just fricking hate your show and the only way forward is to crash the whole thing and sprout a new show with different people who have slightly better idea of what Not to do to keep corruption at bay for a while
So we had e3 die, and geoffs show get the spot instead.

2020 everyone had a "not" e3 digital event around the usual time, 2021 it was back under the e3 banner, then last year they gave up and did nothing/companies just did whatever. This article implies it's coming back "for real" but the big boys are pulling out.

Imagine if E3 had kept its early philosophy of being a big videogame party that you can't miss. The big companies might actually get some value out of the event that can't be replaced with their own alternatives.

Aiming at investors over customers is akin to making a feast out of your seed crop. You might get more up front, but you destroy the foundations that gave you the ability to grow that seed in the first place.

Beginning of an end. I mean, really who needs an E3 when they can create their own gaming reveal event online? A lot more easier and probably have better reach than bloating up one big even competing with other games in development. It's a win-win situation for all big companies. Just means it's bad for us consumers it's usually fun to watch these events.

I'm pretty sure the E3 organizers are panicking they probably don't know what to do. I don't know how it works by getting a spot at E3 but if they sold spots I'm sure it's expensive. At some point you're going to have to move out of the LAX center or whatever and get a smaller spot.. Then at that point you're doing online only. And then nothing. It's just a matter of time until E3 officially dies. I don't think there's anyway that they can survive. I guess Indie game publishers will take up the scraps after the Big 3 leave
