What action RPGs manage to balance both elements together, so by the time you're doing the final dungeon or hidden superboss, you have to be good at both sides to succeed? Any with party members? [let alone ones you can take direct control of]

there are none because games are designed for even game journos with 115 IQ to be able to beat them.

115 IQ is top 15% of the population

not him, but yeah 115 is apparently 84th percentile which is top 16% of the population.

It's true if you assume that IQ is normally distributed, which isn't too far off an assumption (at least genetically).
If we account for epigenetics and development, it might be either a higher or lower percentage.

in Elden Ring you certainly don't HAVE to be good at both to kill every boss (including the optionals/"super" bosses). Being good at leveraging the RPG mechanics does make the game significantly easier, sure, but it's not required.

So is there a game that fits the bill?

I'm not really sure. It's also something I'm looking for myself (except I'd prefer the party part to be optional). I'd say probably the earlier Elder Scrolls titles or Diablo and all the games inspired by it are the closest thing that quickly come to mind (but despite enjoying those back in the day, I have grown too tired of random loot and random content). I think there are also probably a bunch of Action JRPGs (the older Mana titles, Tales series, maybe some of the Kingdom Hearts, etc) where it might be impossible to, for example, beat the game at level 1 with shit equipment, but the RPG elements are very linear with most not even allowing you to allocate your own points into stats, etc.
I'd love a game that does both: super flexible RPG mechanics that are absolutely required to learn, but with some degree of controls/skill depth.

        Stranger of Paradise/Nioh
The building aspect even becomes too complicated for its own good in my opinion, but having a good build increases your damage by a ton. It also has party members(SoP)/co-op, but they're pretty shit and most people just stack item droprate buffs on them

haven't played SoP, but as much as I loved Nioh, I think it kinda falls into the same trap as Elden Ring and Dark Souls (albeit maybe to a slightly lesser degree)... leveraging the RPG mechanics makes the game a lot easier, but isn't absolutely required.
feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

It's not required during your regular playthrough, but in the postgame the game definitely expects you to make a functional build or the bosses will take absolute ages to kill
And there really are a ton of class/weapon options

115 IQ is top 15% of the population

Yep, standard deviation for IQ is 15, meaning 115+ is top 16, 130+ is top 5~ and 145+ is less than 1%

damn . I used to get like 144 when I was a kid but now after all the bad sex and good drugs I can't stay focused on the tests and score like 120 cause I keep thinking about wanting to draw or lift weights or go running for better pussy before I can answer all the questions

maybe i got brain damaged from my bad decisions

            >leveraging the RPG mechanics makes the game a lot easier, but isn't absolutely required.
Its required by the time you're going down in the abyss.
Base game is meant to be played by every character so they don't push you too hard. Nioh 1's DLC tightened the difficulty somewhat so most casuals recommended using NG+ gear to beat the NG content for it even though you can do it with base game gear just fine.
Nioh 2 is easier all around because the original was "too hard" and Wo long seems to be even more simplified.

            >postgame
ah, very true. I basically just completed Dream of the Wise then lost steam, so I didn't get that far.

        Well there just aren't any
Elder Scrolls games take no skill and barely offer real build variety
Witcher's combat is shit compared to the average Japanese ARPG, builds also aren't that interesting or necessary
I can't even think of any other Western Action RPGs because the output is just that poor or they're just outright aping the Souls formula and none of the copies are even as good as the original

Presumably OP means needing to be good at the combat, and also needing to have a well-built and equipped character.

It's like you all live in chinkland. Can any of you name a western game, you know the one made by your own people.

Unfortunately, western devs cannot into action combat.
