You're thinking of Final Fantasy, which was made on a shoe-string budget by Squaresoft as sort of a last ditch effort.
If the game wouldn't have sold, the company would've gone under. (Hence the name of the game: FINAL Fantasy)

Dragon Quest was made by Enix, who were actually competent.

We got a redux of Square's stupidity with the Spirits Within theatre release, which bombed so hard they were literally teetering on the edge again and had to be bailed out by partnering with Disney on Kingdom Hearts (selling out to the Über-Maus) and merging with Enix. (Basically: using Enix's liquidity to remain afloat; and Square's brands and market popularity to remain saleable.)

      >8. Metroid ( 1383 )
      >40. Super C ( 261 )
Who in the actual frick considers Metroid 1 that good? It's a 6/10 at best. I can't imagine anyone playing Metroid and thinking it's better than Super C.

        Anonymous

It sounds a bit hipsterish but Metroid is one of those games that oozes atmosphere, with the music and exploratory gameplay I find myself roleplaying and letting my imagination run wild. I'm almost playing my own game that I created in my head. There's also a feeling of loneliness and isolation that can make me emotional, only other game that really replicates this feeling is the original Tomb Raider

        Anonymous

metroid came out 3 years before super c and was a much deeper game

          Anonymous

          >Deeper
Well, Metroid is an exploration game and Super C is an arcade game. In that sense, you could say it's deeper.
But the fact is that Super C has much better controls, much better graphics, much better bosses, much better music, a more varied gameplay and is overall a more fun and polished game.

Apples and oranges. Metroid 1 has some jank, but still stands out even compared to later Metroid games for the amount of freedom it gives to the player, and its difficulty. It truly is a "go where the frick you want and discover shit" kind of game instead of "follow this more or less predetermined path and maybe skip something once or twice".

I feel more offended that they just had to have TLOZ at number 2. At least they had the sense enough to make SMB3 number 1 because they can't possibly be that bias with the Zelda dick riding to have that game above SMB3. My favorite NES game btw is Bionic Commando which should be higher on that list. I need to play the japanese version one day even if its just palette swaps with minor story changes.

            Anonymous

The problem with Zelda I feel is getting addressed well with a lot more anons more and more through the years. Why does it have to be the top rated most praised and beloved game series for all the time? So for every console generation a Zelda game should be identified as the best game of the gen? There is no way in hell this was true back for the NES. I'm not saying the original is shit but no way it is beating SMB3, Bionic Commando, any Mega Man or even Castlevania and Ninja Gaiden to me. I guarantee most Zelda "fans" never even played the original game nor would ever want to touch it. Its only that high because its Zelda its as simple as that. Its not top 10 for the system.

              Anonymous

Not him but I just don't care for SMB3, I honestly prefer SMB1 and even that I wouldn't put in my top 20 NES games

I'm just tired of all these critics, journalists and fanboy communities such as gamefaqs always ranking Zelda games as if they are perfect without flaw. It was always like this but after BOTW it seems to have reached levels so absurd that you'd have to have your head in the sand to not notice.

I dunno, imo the pre-2000s Zelda games are all pretty fricking awesome, the obvious exceptions being the CDI games. It had that x factor. But I lost faith in the series during the Gamecube era, hated WW then, still hate it now, and the series only got worse from there

Not all of them, there are definitely some that are into retrogaming despite not even playing those consoles/games originally. I think it comes from newer games being so shitty that even kids are starting to prefer old games. I have an 11 year old nephew and he plays his SNES mini as often as his Switch, maybe more often.

SNES games are generally less worth playing than NES ones, since they fell for the BIG SPRITES meme and made the games way too easy. See: Castlevania 4.

Early NES games tend to be too repetitive and hard, and games with adventure elements would often be too cryptic. But I do think most of the games mentioned here can be enjoyed even today. Even if Mega Drive and SNES games are generally like the 8 bits ones, but better, if you have already played the best ones, there are still interesting games in older systems.

If only TurboGrafx didn't flop in the US. We could have had another option for 8-bit games that wasn't just NES. Master System gays please don't even talk about that joke of a console. The 8-bit gen was pretty much just NES.

      >The 8-bit gen was pretty much just NES.
That's North America. Master System was big in Europe, and if more games for localized for North American Systems it could've been pretty damn memorable. As it stands it's reasonable that Americans think it's a joke console, that's why Sega needs to do a Master System Mini

        Anonymous

The fact that you had to pause on the console itself because the controller couldn't do it is absolutely fricking absurd. Most games do not look that appealing either or you may as well just play NES.

i'm going to give some better advice and advise you skip the NES altogether. it's simply too simple of a system. the 8 bit graphics are really tough to digest in 2023, not to mention just the limited memory/clock speed that limits everything about the game. ithink the best example of this is the legend of zelda. it just looks awful. the NES is barely a step up from the atari 2600 which was already a dreadful system. get pic related, it pretty much 2D retro gaming perfected. the 16 bit graphics and expanded system stats allow for a MUCH wider range of art styles and game types

    >hur durr frick off zoomer

Note that blowing in a cartridge does absolutely fricking nothing (besides adding spit particles to your game).
It was the act of re-pushing down the shitty spring mechanism that 'fixed' games, as it would often misalign with the pins.

Getting a top-loader console solves this problem entirely.

    >get an OG NES and start a collection.
You're about 15 years too late for that. Any game worth a shit is overpriced.
Get a flashcart if you refuse to emulate.

This is what I own and play regularly. The best thing about the NES is that the games are like 30min to 1 hour in length and are really replayable and fun. I like to beat a stack of games in one sitting

    Bionic Commando
    Castlevania
    Castlevania III
    Contra
    Gradius
    Jackal
    Kirby's Adventure
    Mega Man
    Mega Man 2
    Mike Black person's Punch Out
    Metroid
    Ninja Gaiden
    Super C
    SMB 1
    SMB 2
    SMB 3
    Zelda
    Zelda 2
