dumb

castlevania 1 and 3
zelda and zelda 2

i could hardly believe kirbys adventure was on the nes.
No wonder, it runs like absolute shit.

Batman: Return of the Joker
TMNT 2: The Arcade Game
Bubble Bobble
Thunder & Lightning
Yoshi
Ninja Gaiden
>Faxanadu
Masochist
>contra
super C too. I think that one is better and underrated
Contra Force is a very fun run and gun game despite not being a true sequel and just its own thing. The selectable characters were badass
I started playing the first Batman NES game on my 3DS a while ago and it's surprisingly tight, with great sprite work for an 8-bit game. Gonna see what Return of the Joker is like now
whatever you do avoid the Superman game
Oh my god
Can you run pirated roms in any way on an NES? My mom gave me her 1985 NES a while ago, but I never used it
Yes, get an ever drive
Dragon Warrior
I hate playing JRPGs on the NES, battles are always on a black screen that makes already tedious grinding completely unfun. At least give me some fricking scenery to look at. I do love the remake on GBC though
It does though?
huh, I must be confusing it with something else. There are a lot of similar games from that era
You're thinking of Final Fantasy, which was made on a shoe-string budget by Squaresoft as sort of a last ditch effort.
If the game wouldn't have sold, the company would've gone under. (Hence the name of the game: FINAL Fantasy)
Dragon Quest was made by Enix, who were actually competent.
We got a redux of Square's stupidity with the Spirits Within theatre release, which bombed so hard they were literally teetering on the edge again and had to be bailed out by partnering with Disney on Kingdom Hearts (selling out to the Über-Maus) and merging with Enix. (Basically: using Enix's liquidity to remain afloat; and Square's brands and market popularity to remain saleable.)
>Thou should not have died
Shatterhand.
Also Batman: Return of the Joker has 2 fake difficulty levels. One's a snow stage.

>8. Metroid ( 1383 )
>40. Super C ( 261 )
Who in the actual frick considers Metroid 1 that good? It's a 6/10 at best. I can't imagine anyone playing Metroid and thinking it's better than Super C.
It sounds a bit hipsterish but Metroid is one of those games that oozes atmosphere, with the music and exploratory gameplay I find myself roleplaying and letting my imagination run wild. I'm almost playing my own game that I created in my head. There's also a feeling of loneliness and isolation that can make me emotional, only other game that really replicates this feeling is the original Tomb Raider
metroid came out 3 years before super c and was a much deeper game
>Deeper
Well, Metroid is an exploration game and Super C is an arcade game. In that sense, you could say it's deeper.
But the fact is that Super C has much better controls, much better graphics, much better bosses, much better music, a more varied gameplay and is overall a more fun and polished game.
Metroid soundtrack is 11/10
Apples and oranges. Metroid 1 has some jank, but still stands out even compared to later Metroid games for the amount of freedom it gives to the player, and its difficulty. It truly is a "go where the frick you want and discover shit" kind of game instead of "follow this more or less predetermined path and maybe skip something once or twice".
I feel more offended that they just had to have TLOZ at number 2. At least they had the sense enough to make SMB3 number 1 because they can't possibly be that bias with the Zelda dick riding to have that game above SMB3. My favorite NES game btw is Bionic Commando which should be higher on that list. I need to play the japanese version one day even if its just palette swaps with minor story changes.
I like Zelda 1 more than Mario 3.
But Zelda 2 is the best NES game.
The problem with Zelda I feel is getting addressed well with a lot more anons more and more through the years. Why does it have to be the top rated most praised and beloved game series for all the time? So for every console generation a Zelda game should be identified as the best game of the gen? There is no way in hell this was true back for the NES. I'm not saying the original is shit but no way it is beating SMB3, Bionic Commando, any Mega Man or even Castlevania and Ninja Gaiden to me. I guarantee most Zelda "fans" never even played the original game nor would ever want to touch it. Its only that high because its Zelda its as simple as that. Its not top 10 for the system.
Not him but I just don't care for SMB3, I honestly prefer SMB1 and even that I wouldn't put in my top 20 NES games
I'm just tired of all these critics, journalists and fanboy communities such as gamefaqs always ranking Zelda games as if they are perfect without flaw. It was always like this but after BOTW it seems to have reached levels so absurd that you'd have to have your head in the sand to not notice.
I dunno, imo the pre-2000s Zelda games are all pretty fricking awesome, the obvious exceptions being the CDI games. It had that x factor. But I lost faith in the series during the Gamecube era, hated WW then, still hate it now, and the series only got worse from there
Mario and mega man
>I wanna go back to the past
do not pretend you were alive when NES was a thing zoomer
Here's your spoonfed content:

Why do zoomers despise old video game consoles and games?
Not all of them, there are definitely some that are into retrogaming despite not even playing those consoles/games originally. I think it comes from newer games being so shitty that even kids are starting to prefer old games. I have an 11 year old nephew and he plays his SNES mini as often as his Switch, maybe more often.
Excite Bike
Mike Tyson's Punch Out
36yr old boomer here, from what I remembre:
>that Chip & Chap jump n run game
>the cartridte with Super Mario 1, 2 and 3
>Megaman 3
>Little Nemo: Dreammaster
I have so really comfy memories of playing those games in my parent's living room when I was a kid, which means it doesn't help you at all in your search for the "best" games since everybody's memories of NES games might be tainted with nostalgia
Crystalis
The Lone Ranger
SMBs
Blaster Master
Startropic
A lot of what other anons have said like Faxanadu, Excite Bike and Punch out
Mario 3 is the best game for it.
No games before the SNES generation are worth playing anymore
>No games after the SNES generation are worth playing anymore
fixed that for you, no need to thank me
Just compare the original Metroid to Super Metroid, the difference is massive
Yeah I know, the first Metroid is so much better. It's insane how much.
1 tile map with sprites ought to be enough for anyone
Mario 1 and 3 aged beautifully. Just as good as in 1985 and 1988.
SNES games are generally less worth playing than NES ones, since they fell for the BIG SPRITES meme and made the games way too easy. See: Castlevania 4.
>way too easy
As opposed to NES games which deliberately padded out 2-3 hour long games to 8
A condensed, challenging, always entertaining experience is better than a mindless long slog, yes.
It's not entertaining to constantly repeat the same areas until you get lucky
Git gud.
Early NES games tend to be too repetitive and hard, and games with adventure elements would often be too cryptic. But I do think most of the games mentioned here can be enjoyed even today. Even if Mega Drive and SNES games are generally like the 8 bits ones, but better, if you have already played the best ones, there are still interesting games in older systems.
Nes is a meme console enjoyed primarily by morons.
Oh I forgot. The Guardian Legend, homie. That shit is the bomb!
If only TurboGrafx didn't flop in the US. We could have had another option for 8-bit games that wasn't just NES. Master System gays please don't even talk about that joke of a console. The 8-bit gen was pretty much just NES.
>The 8-bit gen was pretty much just NES.
That's North America. Master System was big in Europe, and if more games for localized for North American Systems it could've been pretty damn memorable. As it stands it's reasonable that Americans think it's a joke console, that's why Sega needs to do a Master System Mini
The fact that you had to pause on the console itself because the controller couldn't do it is absolutely fricking absurd. Most games do not look that appealing either or you may as well just play NES.
I will never play anything before the SNES. NES games are just too ugly for me
I literally wrote them all out about 2 days ago, including why i recommended specific region's releases of games over others.
Lurk more.
(ps - none of the mega man games made the list, however kitamura's other game that is similar to but better than mega man did make the cut)
Nobody cares about your list.
No Tendies allowed.Real men play PS5 games.
i'm going to give some better advice and advise you skip the NES altogether. it's simply too simple of a system. the 8 bit graphics are really tough to digest in 2023, not to mention just the limited memory/clock speed that limits everything about the game. ithink the best example of this is the legend of zelda. it just looks awful. the NES is barely a step up from the atari 2600 which was already a dreadful system. get pic related, it pretty much 2D retro gaming perfected. the 16 bit graphics and expanded system stats allow for a MUCH wider range of art styles and game types
>hur durr frick off zoomer
i'm 33 and my first game was super mario bros/duck hunt. i recently went back to the NES and it was less than memorable. also i didn't even grow up with a SNES and only started playing on a friends during college
Frick off with your modern consoles, Zoomer
>t. seething balding 40-something manchildren
sorry homosexuals, your childhood wasn't as good as you remembered. SNES shits all over NES in every category
it's just regular then, i prefer the snes too but the NES is still great, castlevania 1/3, mario 3, kirby and megaman are still among the best to this day.
>it's just regular then
*it's just regular shit taste then
gameplay > graphics
Total zoomer genocide.
I'm 27 and playing NES and loving it so maybe you just have shit taste
Yeah but the castlevanias and ninja gaiden ports on snes are bad
Note that blowing in a cartridge does absolutely fricking nothing (besides adding spit particles to your game).
It was the act of re-pushing down the shitty spring mechanism that 'fixed' games, as it would often misalign with the pins.
Getting a top-loader console solves this problem entirely.
I had one as a kid, I'm 41 now. At the time it was amazing, but it aged terribly to something like the snes, for example.
I enjoyed batman 3, the super marios and such but it's all tinted by nostalgia. re-playing that shit is painful.
>I'm 41 now.
Cool but I hope I'm not still here at your age. I got 7 years to go...

There are other greats on the NES (Shadowgate, Deja Vu, Life Force, Q*Bert, Donkey Kong Jr, Burgertime, Dragon Quest games, Final Fantasy games, Karate Champ, Lemmings, Paperboy, Xenophobe, California Games, 720°) that are better played on other platforms.
>Cobra triangle
Don't scar the child.
Then I realized I was going to suggest ghosts and goblins, so it's masochism all around.
>Star Tropics (never played 2)
StarTropics 2 is a really disappointing sequel. Everything about it is so bland and soulless compared to the first, even the basic stuff like the graphics and color palettes especially is just bad.
Star tropics
Blaster Master
Ninja Gaiden
Mario 3
River City Ransom
I wrote a huge list but too many lines. I'll try to condense it.
While I am at it: generally, look into anything made my later Nintendo (not early 80s), Capcom, Konami/UltraGames, Sunsoft, Namco(t), Taito, Natsume, maybe Jaleco.

Just emulate them. Unless you grew up with the nes and have nostalgia for it I guarantee you won’t enjoy the games for more than 10 minutes, the novelty wears off pretty fast.
Don't buy or collect the games though, just get an ever drive.
Better than the arcade version.
more than one case of that, Punch Out for example
Contra and Life Force are also better than the arcades.
>get an OG NES and start a collection.
You're about 15 years too late for that. Any game worth a shit is overpriced.
Get a flashcart if you refuse to emulate.
Any good NES homebrew games to play?
Ah yes I remember seeing this on youtube a few years back. Very cool to see that I guess I can try it out.
Solar Jetman
Phantom Fighter
Legacy of the Wizard
The Magic of Scheherazade
This is what I own and play regularly. The best thing about the NES is that the games are like 30min to 1 hour in length and are really replayable and fun. I like to beat a stack of games in one sitting
Bionic Commando
Castlevania
Castlevania III
Contra
Gradius
Jackal
