I noticed in the credits they have several people credited as "Kimono technicians" or something like that, which made me laugh at the time, but just goes to show the kind of high quality design the show has.

The novel was pretty good, I like the old series and I really doubt a modern take on a novel like that is capable of being good. It's a good show but the only downside is the weird distorted visual lens effect they have, it actually gave me a headache.
Sometimes the dialogue drags on too long especially when it's predictable.
I like that john was portrayed as kind of a scoundrel and that people considered him someone to be used and discarded rather than easily impressed by.
Asian men shouldn't be mad at all because they really toned down the romance from the book, hell even the real life guy had more of a wish fulfillment fantasy than blackthorn, he loved japan.

My biggest question was, why wasn't Mariko the protagonist? For all intents and purposes, she's the one actually doing stuff, the one with an inner conflict, the one who drives most of the action forward (aside from Toranaga and Ishido) and, in general, has more going on than John. I've been left wondering if something is missing from the books to justify why John should be the centerpiece, and not just simply have taken over once Mariko dies to deliver the epilogue.
Also I was left confused because he's clearly shown back in England or wherever yet the last episode is making it sound like Toranaga absolutely won't ever let him leave Japan.

Blackthorne is the clear protagonist of the novel. Dropping the protagonist to an unfamiliar world is an ages old plot hook. Dunno what they did in the new series. Mariko is an important figure in the book but Blackthorne is much much more influential.
I mean in the book you get all of his inner dialog which makes him the main character. less of a thing for TV shows, which is why they're never 1:1 like the books theyre based on
they still werent leading because that was the men's role. whether or not they trained to fight was really up to their father since that was something you needed to start with at a very young age to not just die right away in a fight with someone who has trained that long
women were also samurai and by definition were allowed to carry swords. most of them were smart enough to know fighting is a stupid pursuit when they controlled everything in a household that mattered already but there are definitely isolated cases of female warriors in battle

I don't think Toranaga would work as protagonist because most of the intrigue throughout the story is trying to guess what Toranaga is planning and what is he truly aiming for. Mariko works because ultimately, the deciding factor and the biggest point of tension in Shogun is whether Mariko is going to do what Toranaga expects of her or not.

If Nobunaga hadn't destroyed the religious priests, Hideyoshi and Tokugawa would have been stopped by the priests and have gotten fricked over by them. My biggest question was, why wasn't Mariko the protagonist? For all intents and purposes, she's the one actually doing stuff, the one with an inner conflict, the one who drives most of the action forward (aside from Toranaga and Ishido) and, in general, has more going on than John. I've been left wondering if something is missing from the books to justify why John should be the centerpiece, and not just simply have taken over once Mariko dies to deliver the epilogue.
Also I was left confused because he's clearly shown back in England or wherever yet the last episode is making it sound like Toranaga absolutely won't ever let him leave Japan.

I don't think Toranaga would work as protagonist because most of the intrigue throughout the story is trying to guess what Toranaga is planning and what is he truly aiming for. Mariko works because ultimately, the deciding factor and the biggest point of tension in Shogun is whether Mariko is going to do what Toranaga expects of her or not.
