Katana honor autism is something nerds invented later on, actual samurai in their day were violent, deceptive, oppressive c**ts. Western ideas of honor (charity, chivalry, honesty, protecting the weak, etc) is different than asian honor (saving face, unquestioning loyalty, avoiding shame, great achievements).

Koei made a version about the Sengoku period of Japan. PLAY IT YOU MOTHERFRICKER.

I read the book last year and have so far seen a couple of episodes of the old mini series. Pretty good stuff. I was surprised that the Japs speak Japanese in the series and that it's not even subbed.
A friend of mine watched an episode of the new Netflix series. It's apparently garbage. No surprises there.

New Netflix series is a very different beast than old show or book or history, but I wouldn't call it garbage.

Was Tokugawa Ieyasu this much of a dick in real life?

Do you understand how much of a dick you have to be to contend for the Shogunate?

I mean he did become Shogun of Japan. You don't do that without being a bit of a dick.

More than just a bit. But compare it to China. Look at the LOWEST number of people who die when a new guy takes over. Makes Nanjing look like barbie horse adventure.

I have faith in him in this case. He's both a weeb and a normalgay at the same time and he told me about the aspects he didn't like. I very much doubt I would either.
The other side if the thing is that I just don't really need to see it. The novel was pretty good, I like the old series and I really doubt a modern take on a novel like that is capable of being good. But even if it is, then so be it: I don't need to watch, read or play everything. I'm glad to hear that you liked it.
That said, a game on the intrigues of the novel, its story and the world could be really neat.

It's a good show but the only downside is the weird distorted visual lens effect they have, it actually gave me a headache.
Sometimes the dialogue drags on too long especially when it's predictable.
I like that john was portrayed as kind of a scoundrel and that people considered him someone to be used and discarded rather than easily impressed by.

Asian men shouldn't be mad at all because they really toned down the romance from the book, hell even the real life guy had more of a wish fulfillment fantasy than blackthorn, he loved japan.

My biggest question was, why wasn't Mariko the protagonist? For all intents and purposes, she's the one actually doing stuff, the one with an inner conflict, the one who drives most of the action forward (aside from Toranaga and Ishido) and, in general, has more going on than John. I've been left wondering if something is missing from the books to justify why John should be the centerpiece, and not just simply have taken over once Mariko dies to deliver the epilogue.

Also I was left confused because he's clearly shown back in England or wherever yet the last episode is making it sound like Toranaga absolutely won't ever let him leave Japan.

He is shown in England holding Marikos cross. It was his fever dream in Osaka. When he returned to the fishing village and took a boat out to sea with best girl Fuji, he dropped the cross in the ocean, thus confirming that he won't return to England.

It was to show him that if he made it back to England his mind would always be on Mariko, even as he is lying in his death bed. He had to leave her behind in the ocean.

Blackthorne is the clear protagonist of the novel. Dropping the protagonist to an unfamiliar world is an ages old plot hook. Dunno what they did in the new series. Mariko is an important figure in the book but Blackthorne is much much more influential.

doesnt help that the edo period was so peaceful that women were largely muscled out of the fighter role and put into more domestic duties by default. but its not surprising since even among the male samurai most martial prowess was lost and you only saw an interest in the martial arts again during the meiji period which is pretty recent relatively speaking

Not warriors in the sense of heading out to fight wars for the local daimyo, but they sure as hell.knew how to fight. While the men were away fighting wars, the wives and daughters watched the household. To that end, they were all trained extensively with spears and bows on the off chance some punk bandits drop by looking to rob them. An otherwise dainty and delicate flower of a woman cutting men down with a naginata is the cultural equivalent of Rosie the Rivoter for the Japs

You don't need to do that. But you do need to show what in your supposed source supports your argument. Often just a copy-paste is enough. If you can't do as little as that you are probably full of shit.

I don't think Toranaga would work as protagonist because most of the intrigue throughout the story is trying to guess what Toranaga is planning and what is he truly aiming for. Mariko works because ultimately, the deciding factor and the biggest point of tension in Shogun is whether Mariko is going to do what Toranaga expects of her or not.

Dude was a Samurai who lived around the same time as William Adams, and who travelled to Mexico, Spain, and Rome on a mission for his Lord. His story has a grim end (funny enough because of William Adams turning the Shogun against Catholics) but hit efforts became appreciated 200 years later when Japan opened itself back to the world

So why didn't Portuguese conquer Japan like they and the other Europeans did to the rest of the world?

Japan wasn't a sleepy fishing village like Maccau, it was an absurdly militarized nation of musket-wielding samurai. It was much too far away from Europe to launch a serious campaign at that point in time, though just a few centuries later even China would fall so it would've happened eventually.

Because there are generally two reactions possible when faced with western colonialism.
Either you go "We must all stand together against this threat, so I will try to join forces with my fellow natives", or you go "I want me a slice of that pie too, I'll cater to the westerners and try to get stuff from them so I can become a colonialist power like them".

Japan didn't have much in natural resouces so it's not a high priority. They caught on to their shenanigans, and actually sent their own people exploring America and Europe. It's far away. It's hard to navigate and land an expedition. And it's chock full of Japanese looking for a good place to die.

Not gonna lie, watching this show has made me want to play Ghost of Tsushima. Can you commit sepukku in that game? I think that should be a mechanic in any Samurai game

You have to mash a button once every second not to commit seppuku. The developers took it too far.

Hell, in Usagi Yojimbo back in 1983, you had a seppuku feature.

It's not out for another year at least and it'll run like abject shit. We'll be lucky if they don't axe the LOD too, like they did with Nioh 2

I agree. God, I hate video-games. I miss when I enjoyed playing them more than talking about them.
