What is the point of playing Minecraft?

You punch blocks, You kill, get stuff, get experience, level up, mess around with pixels. And? Why did you do any of that? What purpose did it serve? "Oh I just finished my new house in a block game", so? What now? What's next?

I really wish the developer wasn't so slow and lazy with updating that game.

It's been years and there's zero new gameplay stuff, just more pointless fluff. The addition of like 6 gorillion types of butterflies really seemed like the nail in the coffin.

I just finished a castle in minecraft, which was inspired from Neuschwanstein. But even after finishing it, there is no catharsis, no relief, infact I feel rather pathetic for basically achieving nothing.

All I did was arrange and organize a bunch of pixels.

It's a sandbox. You can do whatever you want in it. Kill the ender dragon? Sure. Build massive automated factories and transit? Make a functional redstone calculator? Why not? I usually get bored by these games but plenty of people have fun sitting around and making busy work for themselves.

Play on a server. You can let other people see the cool things, and the builds can have actual functions if the server has something like towny or whatever similar there might be nowadays.

Because once you finish the house now its time for a garden around it, then creating a stream nearby, then creating a large basement underneath the house and escape tunnels, defensive traps and fortifications, etc etc and that will be satisfying and pleasing for many more hours. Basically this

Anyway, the problem for me with minecraft is how dead the world feels. The villagers are so moronic, and their trade mechanic is completely broken. Wish there were actually well made npcs to encounter, and actual towns

The problem with Minecraft is that building serves no actual survival purpose. You beat the game in the first 2 minutes by digging a 3-deep block hole in the ground and then sealing yourself. There should be actual raids on player locations, with risks of actual destruction to player creation.

crafting grid didn't tell you how to make shit back in the day, you just had to figure it out yourself. its part of why minecraft blew up on youtube, people were looking for video tutorials since the game had none.

I don't know how you would conduct a study but there is an interesting divide between zoomers and gamers before them. Zoomers just do not understand the concept of "play", they must always be doing something with a goal. Much of the most beloved games of the past were just sandboxes where you durdled around playing with a bunch of tools. Zoomers don't do this at all. Even in games like Roblox or Fortnite, it's sectioned off mini games where there is a very specific player role. If a game like Black and White 2 or came out today, it wouldn't be very popular at all. It's probably why so many people requires games to have progression and RPG mechanics nowadays.

Pic related is a deeply millennial game that zoomers will never understand.

It really depends. Minecraft is fun, you can build anything you want, and tech mods add extra pleasing autism to the mix. Fallout 4 is dogshit because its sandbox mechanics are dogshit and its writing is dogshit, so it's boring to both just frick around and explore (who the frick likes the settlement building?) and it's boring to progress through the story.

it’s simple to dive into and simple to pick up after not playing for long periods. there is a sense of gambling when it comes to finding diamonds, endgame locations, starting seeds etc. so it has that addictive element like a gacha. there is village raids, farming, building, fishing, boating, gliding, living in different biomes so you can role play if you wanted. it’s good for low attention span players, but as you can see the fanbase is incredibly autistic (perhaps more so than sonic) and the game itself is incredibly shallow and you are responsible for making your own fun. I also think the updates keep making the game worse and stopped playing altogether when they went to infinite maps. sure you can get everything in one seed, but the overworld is not nearly as cohesive and sometimes the biomes are literally only a couple of blocks or they go on forever and are typically very empty

Creation. However the real magic of minecraft is playing on servers. The social feedback of creating together is nice.

the only game i think that i've ever played where this was true was space engineers. every other survival game definitely has a final tech tier and an amount of automated resource farming that would render your base 'done'.
