It didn't.
PoE remains the most successful non-Diablo ARPG on the market today, which is a shame since it is a giant money laundering service and endgame is just exploiting in-game market trends for real money.
I was going to make a thread complaining how there are no GOOD ARPGs on the market right now. Grim Dawn is old, and it didn't do much to change the genre it copied D2 and sold itself as a return to form since D3's shitshow. Now D2R is out and both GD and D3 are dead.

Grim Dawn's setting was really cool, but they really fricked up the main story. Started out with this cool extra planar invasion by demons that possess the soul but then shifted focus to random ass chtulhu blood worshippers that felt generic as shit
The Malmouth DLC put focus back on the aetherials and that was really cool but frick me if the final half of the main game wasn't boring.
Aetherials weren't demons; they were an entire extradimensional species, that used to be pawns of the primordial gods, used in their wars. They were possessing humans until realizing that human behavior/will was affecting the Aetherial's subsequent actions, such as the Warden still experimenting on people.
Ch'thon is basically THE top god, arguably tied with Yugol, and essentially all the blood of everyone/everything is Ch'thon's blood, which was being 'returned' to him through the Ch'thonian's wars and torture/sacrificing.
I do wish there had been more... resolution involving a number of things but there is also tons of plot happenings too. I also think Act 2 is a big narrative question mark and half in momentum coming out of Act I.

I'll add my worthless opinion that all the ARPGs I've seen are too loot and optimization oriented, but then fill the game with shit loot and inadequate UI to sift through it.
Chronicon is basically quality of life: the ARPG. It has loot filters, you can disenchant and re-enhant spell effects, if you get a bad roll on an item you can re-roll the stats, if you get back random effects you can re-roll them too while locking the good ones you want and incrementally upgrade the gear to a cap and so on. It's really nice but at the same time it makes the endgame really short since you're essentially only looking for one set of items and once you find one of them you already have your BiS for that piece, you just need to re-roll and upgrade it.

The ARPG market is dead.

wasn't this packaged with windows 7 too? how the frick did that happen?
Torchlight Frontier burned all good faith the series had into the ground.
i thought that was fate

Because greedy devs decided to put mobile game shit in a genre that really didn't need it.

I know anon, was using simplified language.
playing through the campaign 3 times to get to end-game sucks
It needed Adventure Mode.
Plagued by needing 50 expansions
>two content expansions = 50
whoa
>literally no good ARPGs are coming out anytime soon
Every game is chasing D2's base, failing to realize D2 has no base anymore.
Stop making D2 lites and make your own games.
Make D1 lites instead

Boring-ass generic game. Is this really the best ARPG games have to offer?
If I see an ARPG and the Paladin character has Hammer Throw, I refuse to play it.
Let Hammerdin die with D2, please.
