Stein Gate VN, Fate Stay Night, Umineko, Higurashi, Little Busters, everyone have more text that the Bible, War and Peace (Leo Tolstoy), In Search of Lost Time (Marcel Proust) or The Man Without Qualities (Robert Musil)

If the complete works of William Shakespeare are put in VN format the playtime could be only 3 hours, the other VNs are 60 hours or more. It's weird how VNs are the longest examples of literature created by the human civilization.

You're likely mixing Raging Loop with 999 on DS, which didn't have a skip function and required you to replay the game from the beginning with no convenient flowchart like its sequels. Despite this limitation it remains the best way to experience the story as it was written, the remasters adding unnecessary voice acting and removing the bottom narrative screen are moronic and ruin everything about the game.
If you really want to play 999, just do it on a mobile DS emulator, like Drastic or MelonDS on android. Fast-forwarding at 600% speed is basically skipping.

It's interesting to note that out of the three visual novels you've cited, only Katawa Shoujo is intellectually honest in its presentation and themes. It's entry-level, knows its purpose and target audience. It also shows a surprisingly good understanding of the culture, game design and literary devices behind the medium. The art and music might be amateurish but it is truly a beautiful collection of realistic romance stories with realistic girls that you still want to idolize, despite being born out of western minds. (... If we ignore Shizune's bad end route in the final version.)

Now compare KS to Fate and Steins;Gate. All you see are corny, childish wish-fulfillment trash stories written for the lowest common denominator: lonely otaku manchildren seeking for waifus to obsess over. But what makes them truly horrendous is the fact they're hiding their core behind autistic levels of shonen chuuni shit in the case of Fate, and amateurish character drama surrounded by outdated 2ch memes in the case of Steins;Gate. It's fascinating to think about how westerners hold these titles in high regard, just because they did the bare minimum in obfuscating their true nature; it makes the average ironic weaboo think those works are above the standardized, sterile and inoffensive moe garbage they usually consume. Their lengths also contribute to this effect, as the sunk cost fallacy in reading repetitive prose that gets nowhere creates the illusion of proper world-building and character development.

Same applies to Tsukihime, Dies Irae, Subahibi, Muv-Luv alternative, Muramasa. It's like teenagers will who tell you in a straight face to read Naruto, Mirai Nikki or Bleach for their mature storytelling compared to genuine westoid slop. Everything in those stories is solved by asspulls, incoherent power levels and who screams the loudest about their abilities.
All you have to do is have characters express their motives or states of being through empty philosophical platitudes and ramblings for weebs to think they're reading something smart.
Even ambitious plotge got away with this. Uchikoshi just has to copy-paste a Wikipedia article about a mind experiment with high-school level understanding word by word using one of his characters in Ever17 or Zero Escape, and you have thousands who will think it's a smart story. Ryukishi writes the same line 36 times in 1 hour to hammer down a concept and media illiterate weebs will think it was good writing.

Tbh once you're no longer a teen 99% of these stories (and anime in general) feel brazenly childish and sloppily written, with the 1% being ones that don't take themselves seriously.
At this stage you have to migrate to "real" books/shows or else limit fiction to brainless entertainment without much sentimental value.
For instance I remember finding Dies Irae to be the coolest and most profound shit in existence during middle school. But when I revisited it for nostalgia's sake halfway through my undergrad, I legitimately struggled to go through a few sentences without audibly cringing. I very occasionally read through some seinen for fun but it genuinely confuses me how many adults are crazy over stories expressly written for children.

I'm 30 in a couple of months and the peak Key VNs are still damn near the height of fiction as an artform as far as I'm concerned. I've also read a lot more books than I ever have visual novels, doesn't change my opinion at all. And TV/movies are just absolute garbage in comparison, it's very rare that they even get to the level of the schlockiest VNs or books. You and other normalgays should just get over yourselves.

          >Key VNs
I'm not denying that there are probably some that still hold up for adults, but almost the entirety of even the most respected ones fall really flat under the scrutiny that a teenager would overlook. As an example a few months ago I finished Fata Morgana, apparently a candidate for the greatest VN and held in extremely high regard unanimously from what I've seen online. While it was still decent overall, there are dozens of mishaps in the apparently peerless writing that I would've overlooked as a kid (The torture scene in the last act in particular was offensively bad). While it was maybe an 8/10 being extremely generous, I could confidently say that if I had read it when I was 15 it would've been my favorite vidya.
          >TV/movies are just absolute garbage in comparison, it's very rare that they even get to the level of the schlockiest VNs

most books you'll see at the barnes & noble bestseller list also fall apart under basic scrutiny. you're trying to compare 20-30 years of visual novels tailored for a very specific audience to the entire history of human literature when the better point of comparison is the type of market that puts out books like 50 shades of gray. most literature is dogshit, it's just that it has such a long history that you can easily pick out the diamonds.

all literature, vns or books, is written by people. it isn't fundamentally different to the point where literature itself is some sort of higher artform; the main difference is how long the artform has existed and the fact that vns, as relatively new as they are, haven't branched out much from their initial target demos.

additionally, every year MORE books are written than vns. so it stands to reason you're going to be able point to better examples of books in any given year.

The whole teenager/adult thing you're so concerned about is the problem. It's quintissential normalgay behaviour. You're not thinking about the VN, or the book, you're thinking about how it reflects on your image of yourself, or whether it is socially acceptable for some demographic or whatever.
Of course you'd be more likely to name something your favourite when you were younger, that's just because you had less to compare it to then. If you've read 3 books, it's not surprising when the 4th book ends up being your favourite. When you've read 300 books, it's very unlikely that the 301st will be your favourite. There isn't much more to it than that.
Also, lots of classic universally acclaimed literature has parts that would be considered shit writing if they were released today. None of that really matters.
If you have something to complain about with a particular VN, fair enough. I wasn't a huge fan of Fata Morgana myself. But your general points about VNs as a medium, or claims that you have to be a teenager to think highly of them, are bollocks.
I'd argue that classic literature is incredibly overrated for social and cultural, more than any bonus VNs get from teenagers, and it should be very obvious that that's the case when you think about it from a statistical point of view. Old books had the massive advantage that there was almost nothing to compare them to. I haven't ran the numbers, but I'd guess that there were a lot more books written so far in this first quarter of the 21st century than there were throughout all human history before then combined, it'd be a very strange coincidence indeed for all of the best books to be older than that, and yet that's what a lot of people apparently believe.

This just sounds like you've outgrown the immaturity of the medium, but not your own. You've gone from earnest enjoyment to concern with whether it fits your demographic and whether you'd b made fun of for consuming this sort of media.
At some point you ought to realize that most classics of "true literature" aren't nearly as special as lit grads make them out to be. They're obviously better written and mature, but full of their own flaws, often overwrought, stuffed with irrelevant rambling metaphors, people talking like theatrical villains, awful pacing, and so on. Too many of these stories are read through the lens of "masterpiece" because that's what everyone told you years before you picked up the book.
Once you learn to turn a critical eye to works of acclaimed literature same as you do to VNs, you should realize there's no real reason to be ashamed of enjoying shitty stories if you're not a coward afraid of your tastes being judged.

You do bring up some good points but I don't really agree with the way you framed it.
      >corny, childish wish-fulfillment trash stories
      >they're hiding their core behind autistic levels of shonen chuuni shit
      >amateurish character drama surrounded by outdated 2ch memes
      >it makes the average ironic weaboo think those works are above the standardized, sterile and inoffensive moe garbage they usually consume
      >sunk cost fallacy in reading repetitive prose that gets nowhere creates the illusion of proper world-building and character development.

Obviously 99% of VN's can't be taken as serious literature due to the existence of the shitty anime/otaku tropes within that bog down otherwise interesting and serious ideas, but that's literally the appeal of it.
It's not meant to be on the level of Blood Meridian/Moby Dick/Republic/War and Peace or whatever other meme book is considered serious mature good literature.
It's meant to take interesting aspects of literature, certain components that make them unique and add those to anime/manga/light novel type of writing.
Fate isn't hiding it's true shonen nature with all it's prose, dialogue, details or anything like that at all, it's combining it.
People like sex, people like "interesting" prose, people like longwinded details, people like long exposition, people like infodumps, and so on.
So why not take cool writing elements you like and just add it to shitty anime writing?
The goal of VN's is literally otaku works presented with a "higher art" aesthetic, there's nothing wrong with using literature as a style for low brow bullshit.
Like imagine taking Charlotte's Web/Cat in the Hat/Harry Potter or some other kids book but written in the style of Poe/Kafka/McCarthy, while childish and not real literature does make for a fun read.

You're taking the praise of VN's by fans as a masterpieces within the VN genre as being comparable to real literature when that was never the intended outcome from the writers.

Post way too savage for the braindead nasuturds and sci;adv Redditors.

Umineko is really good if you like mystery and theorycrafting. If you like these aspects in a story you should commit to 07th Expansion and SciADV since they're really good franchises for this sort of thing, but no one will tell you this of course because they'd rather linger in 10+ year old shitty drama that people keep regurgitating without proper reason. They'd rather just be quirky xd gays that want to flex how niche their latest read was.

An honest question from a complete stranger to VNs. What is the appeal compared to reading a book? Books have been for a long time and pretty much all niches are filled with a higher quality threshold. Are you in only for cliché anime moments that are not funny without images?

They're literally the evolution of the medium, sure it can have some interactibility or maybe not, but the point is that you're getting yourself engrossed in a story much like a book while having the extras of voice acting, soundtrack, atmosphere, visuals, all that jazz. And if you're reading something in the meta genre thats something books can't do as well as a VN.

And a follow-up: I imagine VNs are not as socially acceptable as regular anime now. Do you hide that your play them?

I don't hide that I play them because I think any anime enjoyer that can actually sit down and read manga can also enjoy a VN. Why the frick would I hide something that I'm passionate about? Frick the stigma of people automatically thinking VNs are just porn because they can be much more than that, as any other book can, as any other game can, as any other form of art can.

        >can be much more than porn
still they just can't release an all-ages vinnie without a nuclear meltdown in vngays' asses and a plummet in already modest sales
it is porn, plain and simple

Just because porn sells more it doesn't define the medium you gay, many high profile VNs are not 18+, also I have no clue what you mean about the "nuclear meltdown in vngays asses" the VN reader bubble has a shitton of schizoids and this is one of the most bipolar communities i've ever seen, I dont give a frick if dumbasses think VNs NEED PORN in order to be good, they dont. Like any other form of storytelling. Get the frick outta here with that brainlet logic

The soundtrack and voice acting do often add a ton. Imagine reading a classic that has a soundtrack built specifically for not only the book but particular moments within it. I find myself listening to the higurashi soundtrack pretty regular.

      >What is the appeal compared to reading a book?
Vns have Music, voice acting and cgs/sprites. Also, I like how some vns use routes to flesh out their characters and themes. I don't really give a shit about what medium is better and don't only read one medium.

the recent books ive been reading was the ring trilogy and while the first book was eh, second book was interesting but also kinda eh, the third book had one moment in the story that I was just like "wait....what's the fricking point of this? why did they put an edgy moment just to be edgy", it's like the dogrape in subahibi. I understand WHY they put it in there but I feel that it didn't really add anything to the plot except for the sake of "haha look how edgy i am"

I haven't read a modern book in a minute, Blood Meridian was very good. Its kind of edgy in an over the top violence way but its not just for the sake of shock. Whenever I get into a reading slump I just pick up and read a bit of Don Quixote, the book truly has everything. Feels timeless, fricking hilarious, and deep enough to have a bit of a think.

i'll note both down. i have blood meridian but haven't gotten into it yet. im steering a little away from western authors due to their tendency to be edgy for the sake of it. like i swear to god everytime i try a western novel, it always has like the trashiest characters like it's trying to be shameless (the tv show) or something.

i generally like ryushiki07 work but i think he sucks ass when combining all the plot points together. umineko is frustrating for reasons that i don't want to explain because it'll trigger "THEM". i was reading his other manga and they're fun horror manga. even though i may not like his "twists" or the ending/finale. usually his build up and characters are really fun to read. can't wait for what he'll do for Silent Hill.

        Anonymous

ryukishi really suffers from long-term planning issues and just writing piece by piece as he goes with only a loose idea of how he wants things to progress. you can see it in higurashi and umineko really clearly, somewhat in rose guns days, and kind of in higanbana (which is only 2 parts)

he gets way too up his own ass about the emotions and feelings behind things mostly due to his own history as a social worker, and he's capable of writing pretty poignant stuff when he dials it back a little bit, so it's a shame he has this tendency to self-destruct his own tone

despite all this i would still call umineko an easy top 5 vn because it has so many good things about it

that's cool and all but any given work is a synthesis of ideas the author has previously been exposed to and attempting to criticize a piece of media that is using something you've seen before is a reflection of your own memory first and the author's writing quality second in most cases

there are certainly people out there who plagiarize or never try to have original thoughts but you can't shit on 13 sentinels when the writing is such an earnest effort to do its own thing while combining other ideas into it

That seems like a really shallow way to view things where you're getting hung up over recognizing what's being referenced instead of what's actually happening. It's not just about using elements from other sci-fi properties but the way they're all woven together into a coherent narrative without any particular aspect or reference feeling out of place. For example with the terminator expy the T-1000 equivalent is genuinely a good guy, but the incomplete information that all the protagonists and (You) are working with makes it very easy to see him as an enemy until you get to later points in the story

it totally took me out of it that the quirky protagonist just happened to be close friends with a celebrity idol who also happens to have inherited a political role that lets her decide the fate of Akihabra's development.

No I'm viewing it as such because there's no logic or reason for what you're saying unless I need to spell everything out from what I said. Games that have VN elements aren't comparable to VNs because they focus on other factors of the work, while VNs fully engage in giving you a rich story since it's all you fricking do in them. Yeah Karamazov is not as explicit, but it has waifus, anime tier protagonists, and also a great story on top of it.
Its one of the few books that could have had a nice VN adaptation. Of course Ganker and every russian will crucify its VN creators for adapting it, but Im just saying.
                >you will find things you would never find in any other piece of media
I guess there is some sort of interactivity in them, and VNs as a medium are stuck somewhere between audiobook and videogame s genre, so they are their own thing, so you may find unique stuff. For example, I liked that 4th wall thing Fata Morgana did in a certain chapter. Its unique, it spooped me, and cant replicated on other mediums.

I sure hope you're not playing the troony patch that comes with a literal trigger warning

Yeah, since I dont know japanese, I have to settle with that fan made translation.
So far, they seem to have kept those "inappropriate" stuff in the VN. This mostly reads as a disclaimer rather than a changes list.

The vndb jannies got buttmad that it overtook Muv-Luv Alternative as the highest rated VN so they removed it from the site for "having too much gameplay". I actually agree with the decision on that principle (not sure why it's grouped as a VN when Remembrance shares many more similarities with point and click adventure games) but the fact that they also let Danganronpa and Hotel Dusk stay up shows they were just pissy about muv-luv being knocked down.

Common route is unfortunately the worst part of the game. After you get through it and Kasumi's route (which is the worst route of the game, only great parts are Bey vs Shirou and Trifa's mad schizo ramblings) and get into Kei's route, is a lot better.

You don't even see the Three Commanders, Reinhard or Mercurius in those parts, which are the big threats of the novel.

Gnosia is cool. People should play it.
The menu music always makes me stop to hear it.

Gnosia is the most nothing VN I've played. The plot goes nowhere until the very end where it all happens in 30 minutes, the characters are two-note (maybe 3 if you are lucky), the RNG grind for random events that you have no way of knowing the triggers of and have to simply hope to activate in order to finish the game is obscene, the AI is braindead and easy to predict but can also randomly screw you unless you fail a lot and continue to get more points to put into your magic numbers to make it easier to wrangle, the music is constantly cutting out because each scene is 10 seconds long and jumping to the one-sentence meetings at night, the art's okay I guess. What the frick is there for people? It's an interesting idea but in execution it fails on almost all fronts for no good reason.

How is Hello, World? I saw its listing on vndb and thought it was curious that its such a massive nitroplus VN that I've literally never seen anyone talk about once. Too bad that it's only in Japanese or else I would try it for myself.

The best visual novel is Nekonade Distortion. Unfathomably based eroge that delves into philosophy, and has only interesting characters and ideas. It's also untranslated, which is a good moron filter, even if it is harder to appreciate. Also 10/10 theme song.

    utawarerumono trilogy is fantastic
    muvluv trilogy too
I'm playing Tokyo Necro right now and it's pretty good
Full Metal Daemon Murumasa is kino
    Baldr Sky is great, too
I'd specifically recommend getting and playing Baldr Sky ASAP
The company that made it isn't around anymore and the US publisher is obviously not interested in fixing it. I ran into lots of little issues playing it last year that I'm sure were tied to compatibility issues. Thankfully I was able to make it through.

      holy shit wtf....

also what route does it get "good", i got past rain's first ntr scene (disappointing, not because of ntr but because the ntr wasn't enough. like come on just slime fricking???). it's interesting but the amount of infodumping and flashbacks. i kinda feel like i already know what's going on but i still have to play through the game 5 more times....?

What is so bad about the vn anon-shilled?

          Anonymous

This is accurate. I tried giving that one troony spamming his list in VN threads the benefit of the doubt and they were all vapid, uninspired and didn't understand what made people like japanese novels. The abime series in particular somehow succeded in taking all the worst aspects of the Zero Escape/Danganronpa series and made games based on those. Piss easy puzzles, characters who are dumber than in ZTD and failing to make you attached to the characters or their fates. Art I can forgive being bad. But their soundtracks lack identity. Even YTTD made of garageband sounds and RPG maker stuff has a more unique feel than The Zodiac Trial or Birth ME Code.

Slay The Princess and Katawa Shoujo showed western devs can make good things if they try. So there's clearly a lack of generalized talent

      What of it?

OP asked for a good VN so I replied with Saya No Uta. I think it's a good visual novel, albeit a little too short. The way Fuminori's descent into insanity and evilness justified by his warped love was interesting, I didn't mind the sex scenes because they added to the narrative. I hated when he rejected his friends who were trying their best to help him, and I love that it made me feel that way.
In a way, it can almost be seen as criticism of extreme forms of waifuism.

Cant believe people ITT are recommending muv luv.
Its the worst paced story in human history, 70 hours in is the first fight scene, 1 of only 4 ,not joking. The SoL is offensively bad and feels less like vn style gags and more like bad 2000's harem anime. Then theres cast of 8 girls and only like 2 have any depth and the rest get strung along for 60 hours only to be killed in the last hour of MLA for shock value or feels or the writter realizing he couldn't milk the word count anymore. Then theres the ending which reverts everything back to the beginning, this is not only uncommittal but also lacking any thematic throughline.
Muv luv is the all time most overrated kusoge in history, it had a good idea but every step along the way was a mistread
