      ... No he wasn't.

Zack met the president, Cloud basically believes hes Zack without remembering who he is.

But the next line is about how the president remembers him. He calls him a deserter.

        he doesnt remember him
he calls him a deserter because cloud is in soldier uniform and commiting terrorist acts on company property instead of his "job" (protecting shinra corp investments)

This. He also accepts that he was in SOLDIER because of the Mako eyes
          >Cloud
          >Long time no see, President.

          >President Shinra
          >...Long time no see? Oh... you.
          >You're the one who quit SOLDIER and joined AVALANCHE. I knew you'd
          >been exposed to Mako, from the look in your eyes...

          >Unless you become another Sephiroth.
          >Yes, Sephiroth... He was brilliant. Perhaps too brilliant...
As you can see, he doesn't actually remember Cloud or his name. He just heard that a former SOLDIER and joined AVALANCHE, and the Mako eyes seemed to confirm it.

Because Cloud is fucked in the head. Maybe Zack had met him before and shared the story. We can imagine that 1st classes would have some occasions or events where they'd cross paths with the president. It's a very prestigious and elite group.

He probably has. Probably not personally introduced but as a random grunt he could have been in the president's presence even if just as a guard during a parade.

Jenova has the power to absorb memories of other people (which is how it was able to take on the forms of the cetra's dead loved ones). This is how Cloud knows shit he really shouldn't know about.

It's interesting that Cloud was inadvertently pulling a Bavarian fire drill. He was so convinced he was SOLDIER that everyone else bought it too, including the people who run SOLDIER.

If you were to describe Cloud, it would be "A man with blonde spiky hair and a huge sword wearing a SOLDIER uniform", it'd be easy to assume he was a deserter since elite uniforms aren't exactly bought off the shelves.

It was luck but also demonstrative that Cloud was way more competent than he ever gave himself credit for. His crippling insecurity didn't allow him to process that he grabbed Legendary SOLDIER Sephiroth by the sword that he had just been stabbed with and threw him over a railing. It also demonstrates something else that was more subtle. That most of SOLDIER's reputation was bullshit. The prestige was mostly just PR. The two legitimate SOLDIERs we see in the game both get fucked by rank and file uniformed guards.

While a lot of the Compilation is Fucking Stupid, the way SOLDIER is handled is pretty okay. I'd like to think of it as the other way round: SOLDIER exists as a smoke-screen for Shinra's fucked-up genetic experiments.

Recruit some promising youths, inject some Mountain Dew into their veins and tell them that if they work really hard they can be a First Class like Sephiroth, Gackt and whoever the other fucker was. Of course, no matter how hard they try they'll never equal the Firsts because they were made using a different process, but the existence of Second classes show them that there is some potential for progression.

It's always implied in CC that Zack being promoted to First was kind-of a mistake.

This way, SOLDIER serves as two purposes: Special forces and as cover story for where all these super-duper-soldiers come from, even if actually they're made in a different way that they're pretending doesn't exist.

                Deepground is still idiotic though.

Was Zack in SOLDIER before the war with Wutai? Because that seemed to change how everything progressed since his performance in that war was Sephiroth's claim to fame. I can imagine afterwards the whole thing shifted from typical Special Forces to "more Sephiroths please." And Hojo would have been happy to oblige.

Right now I remember. Didn't he take the presidency for the sake of keeping the peace? He didn't really want the job. That's why Laguna's story is so bittersweet. He had the hots for a singer who liked him back, that didn't work out and he stumbled into a random town, fell in love with a local girl, had to take a job he didn't want, and lost her young. But the time he was with her was the happiest he'd ever been and he reflects on it with joy rather than sadness. It's something that resonates with you after you've been through a lot of shit.

FF7 had a botched translation that fucked with people's understanding of the game

        Anonymous

It really didn't. There were a handful of errors but it was all unimportant shit like the "so thats how you fooled them" line. What messed people up, and this is a problem with most of Square's writing on the PS1, is that they'd drop a crucial plot point in hour 3 and then follow up on that in hour 15 and just assume the player remembered it. But since people dont typically marathon 60 hour RPGs you could have used some benchmarking. FFVIII is notorious for this because the seemingly insignificant factoid that GFs sometimes cause memory loss ends up becoming a major plot point way later, long after you forgot about the foreshadowing, if you even noticed it in the first place.

The translation doesn't actually present any incorrect information outside of Vincent's recruitment scene where he says Sephiroth was created five years prior to the game. It's overall written terribly and there are some important sections that really fucking suck (Cloud's speech after he returns from the Lifestream is worded especially poorly), but the text generally represents what was said in Japanese throughout.

FFT has a fine translation, there's a few errors and they struggle with the character limit on occasion but that's the extent of it. a few characters come off as overly blunt compared to the japanese but it's not a huge deal. These issues are fixed in the WOTL translation but Alexander O Smith's purple prose is at its highest level and some people prefer the original translation because they want people to just fucking say bean soup instead of "broth of bean"

FFT feels like it was written by someone who wasn't quite proficient in either Japanese or English. It's a level below FF7 in quality, and quite regularly presents outright incorrect information. To be fair to the translator, it is written with far more uncommon vocabulary than any other FF preceding it.

Alexander O Smith didn't do the WotL translation, and you're really underselling how shit the PS1 translation is. Whether it's worth putting up with the flowery dialogue of WotL (and the general fucking garbage quality of the port) is up to the individual, but you have to call a spade a spade.

FFVIII is notorious for this because the seemingly insignificant factoid that GFs sometimes cause memory loss ends up becoming a major plot point way later, long after you forgot about the foreshadowing, if you even noticed it in the first place.

the main thing that confused me for a long time was the term "Sephiroth clone" because whenever the word 'clone' is used in any media it refers to a near-identical duplicate. I thought the men in black capes all looked like Sephy underneath. Then there's the fact that there actually *is* a Sephiroth duplicate running around.

Yeah, Hojo's science stuff isn't badly translated as much as it's just not conveyed as clearly as it could have been. Though that may have been by design. Hojo was a lunatic even by Shinra's standards and he didn't give a shit about any of the business concerns of the executives, who let him do whatever he wanted because he got results. So it's perfectly Hojo to not care if anyone doesn't understand his work.

The vast majority of Hojo's story is optional content you can only see if you explore the Shinra Mansion basement and Icicle Inn.

FFVII is weird that way. A shit ton of plot critical information is skippable. I played through the game several times before I even knew about the existence of the Cloud and Zack flashback.

There's at least an excuse for that one, as it was additional content added into the re-release.

Cloud was in SOLDIER tho, he was experimented on with Mako and made to join after the incident at Nibelheim. Cloud didn't just sit around as a grunt in the years between that and joining Avalanche.

He was fucked with in Nibelheim but Zack sprung him out before Hojo could do anything with him. Zack dressed Cloud in a spare SOLDIER uniform and he then spent the trip to Midgar doing his best impression of Timmy from South Park before coming to after Zack was shot, taking Zack's Buster Sword, and then stumbling into the city claiming to be Ex-SOLDIER before presumably running into Tifa who then recruited him into Avalanche.

Nah, he got the Mako treatment and all, but he left with Zack as soon as he escaped from Hojo's lab. They decided to become mercenaries (or Zack did anyway, Cloud wasn't all there) and then headed for Midgar.

He probably has. Probably not personally introduced but as a random grunt he could have been in the president's presence even if just as a guard during a parade.

      This or

Because Cloud is fucked in the head. Maybe Zack had met him before and shared the story. We can imagine that 1st classes would have some occasions or events where they'd cross paths with the president. It's a very prestigious and elite group.

, either way it's plausible he could've seen him at some point

It's Cloud trying to be a cool wiseass. It's like saying "didn't expect to see you here" when the character did in fact expect to see them here. So he doesn't need to have seen the President before for this to make sense.

Okay let's just settle this, those who played Crisis Core, did Cloud ever meet the prez?

      Anonymous

I played Crisis Core and don’t remember any scenes that even featured President Shinra. Regardless, he almost certainly knew who the President was and had probably seen him before on multiple occasions (but just never directly met him in person).

Is this really so hard for you guys to imagine without having it explicitly happen in the game? He was a fucking grunt in the President’s military— it’d be like joining the US Army and somehow not knowing who the US President is. And since Cloud decided to adopt the persona of one of the highest ranking members of their military, believing that he’d met the President before doesn’t seem far fetched at all.

No, it'd be like being in special forces and seeing a speech by the president.
Then years later when you get out, you see him and saying: "Long time, no see, Mr. Trump".
Then him looking at your special forces uniform and saying, "Ah, the deserter."

It makes no fucking sense from either of them.

The president only recognizes the uniform and the spunky attitude. He’s too busy thinking up new ways to be a menace to mankind to bother with remembering his subordinates.

Bruh, in what fucking universe does the statement “I can’t be expected to remember each person’s name” automatically translate to ‘we’ve met before’? It’s an entirely ambiguous statement, as in maybe he met him or maybe not— he’s not sure because he’s a hotshot bigwig who can’t be arsed to remember every spikey-haired dickhead that isn’t his golden boy Sephiroth.

only ESLs like you think that english is dictated by what it says in the dictionary. despite using the word "remember", the president is actually saying that he doesn't remember at all!

This isn't even a dictionary thing. The president doesn't remember meeting him, and the ESL thinks the president is therefore affirming that they have necessarily met. You gotta get into the mindset of a retard to level with this guy

Are you two playing stupid or is this real?
If he didn't know Cloud he would have said "I can't be expect to KNOW each SOLDIER's name."
                Instead he said 'remember'.

If someone implies they know you in some way but you don't remember them then it's natural to take them at their word and just say you don't remember them.

Not necessarily. What you saideans essentially the same thing. Him meaning no one would ever try to inform him of every SOLDIERs name because he couldn't possibly remember them all is the same thing.

They both imply the same thing, which is that he isn’t sure if he’s met him before or not. Evidently you are ESL or you wouldn’t find this extraordinarily basic manner of speech to be such a conundrum.

Mate, saying I DON'T REMEMBER X is not the same thing as X NECESSARILY HAPPENED. If anything, having no recollection of X is evidence that X did not happen

not that this conversation is interesting in the slightest, but in the original japanese he uses the verb 覚える which carries more a connotation of recalling or memorizing. So he's apologizing for asking the name because he can't be fucked to memorize the names of all the SOLDIERs.

                >すまないがソルジャーの名前なんていちいち覚えとらんのでな

This doesn't imply one way or the other whether or not he's met them. It could simply mean that he's seen all their names in a database but didn't memorize them.

                Anonymous

いちいち is perhaps better translated as "every single", which makes it less ambiguous. The sentence is mostly about stressing how there's a lot of SOLDIERs that he doesn't care to distinguish between. I think the original english translation gets it across fine if you're not too ESL (I am slightly ESL)

Anon, it’s a goddamn anime-tier story in a videogame aimed at teenaged boys in the 90s. Suspension of disbelief is a bit of a necessity in order to sequence the events without giving yourself an aneurism.

          And this

          Cloud thinks he’s Zack retard

is basically all the explanation you need in order to make sense of it.

He doesn't call him a deserter even, look at the actual script

          >Tell me, traitor... what was your name?

          >Cloud
          >Cloud.

          >President Shinra
          >Forgive me for asking, but I can't be expected to remember each person's >name.
          >Unless you become another Sephiroth.
          >Yes, Sephiroth... He was brilliant. Perhaps too brilliant...
As you can see, he doesn't actually remember Cloud or his name. He just heard that a former SOLDIER and joined AVALANCHE, and the Mako eyes seemed to confirm it.

. He's just aware that an ex-SOLDIER is working for AVALANCHE. It makes sense he would've heard about that after the blew up the first reactor (even if it wasn't the truth).

Yes that's what a Sephiroth Clone means. They're all failures however because they didn't get the injections in the womb like Sephiroth did.

No, not quite. The process of making a SOLDIER and making a Sephiroth Copy is the same (injection of Jenova cells + showered in Mako), but the SOLDIER project predates the Sephiroth Copy project. The Sephiroth Copy project started after the Nibelheim incident, and its goal was not actually to produce another person as strong as Sephiroth, it was actually the opposite. Hojo wanted to use those who lost their sense of self from the injection/showering to prove his Reunion theory. So "Sephiroth Copy" is a pretty terrible name, but you know, Japan things.
