based pre-1.10f boomer. in 1.09 (probably the version you are thinking of) i'd argue the grind was miserable from like level 30 on, because even normal difficulty you have to grind due to the level difference from normal to NM being so large that you'll gain basically no exp going through NM unless you already grinded a lot in normal.

but in 1.10f+, that's not a thing, while everyone online does mandatory tristram, tombs, cows, baal, etc (whatever the hyper meta choices are i cant remember exactly), it isn't necessary and you can just go through the game killing everything and get enough exp.

The end game was getting to level 99.
The concept of getting to maximum level and then you get to play the "end game" is a MMO concept that has no place in ARPGs.
In MMOs the concept of end game makes sense because it signalizes a shift in the play style, since you move from a single player questing game to group content such as raids, etc.
ARPGs don't have this shift , it's the same gameplay from level 1 until you stop playing your character.
Just make the "end game" in d4 to get to 100, make it that you need to do high level nightmare dungeons to even get some xp at all, and when you die you lose XP, give characters 100 skill points and make a bigger and better skill tree. There you go, game fixed.

          >it was hard to reach maximum level in d4 ever
          LMAO
          Grindy =/= hard.
Hard means if your character is not good enough, it will never reach maximum since you die and lose xp.
You'd know the difference if you ever played a good Arpg, Diablo baby.

ARPG equals Diablo. All others are just pretenders.

          Anonymous

That's because blizzard trained everyone in WoW and subsequently D3 to expect to hit maximum level. They tried to do the d2 buffer levels but made getting to the soft cap trivial and included unique level 100 encounters so people had to FOMO their way to the top.

I've never played Diablo 4 but my impression was it's basically an online only microtransation game where it likely had dailies and shit to keep you coming back to entice you to spend money. How can something like that not have an endgame that keeps you coming back constantly? Diablo 2 had no reason to care when you quit.

There’s a cash shop sure but there’s no daily login stuff like mmo’s/mobile games get away with. The cash shop is priced beyond silly since they only sell bundled outfits even if you only like the helmet from a set you’ll have to shell out~$25.

It’s got the best campaign of the aarpg’s but falls off a cliff later, at least season 2 bloodtides were a fun grind. Don’t like how the seasonal stuff like vamp powers and construct stones have to be gotten on every character but I guess they really tried to keep players playing by forcing them to upgrade stuff multiple times but hey the glyph system sucks too.

HnS games went to shit once your character clearing entire room with one skill became a basic gameplay loop and not a well earned reward for reaching endgame and collecting items for your build

      Anonymous

this is no longer the paradigm
shit build = clears the room
average build = clears the room and also nearby rooms
good build = clears monsters before you can see them onscreen, you will never see a monster

      Anonymous

This is the real problem. None of the content matters, none of the items matter, none of any of it matters, when the ultimate goal is to just kill everything on your screen as quick as possible. Artificial decision making to reach the same end goal, because that's what gaming has become now, speed runs and min-maxing, thanks to YT gaming channels and streamers. It's so fricking moronic. Experimenting in D2 and actually fricking up your character because of poor stat/skill choices was a rewarding experience. Some of the skills were just dogshit and poorly optimized, but that's a different discussion, the point was the game felt rewarding when you built your character and tried new things, not just copy-pasting a perfect and popular online build.

These games need to be slowed down. It gets to the point where you clear everything instantly and you don't even need the best gear to do it, making the gear grind pointless. For some moronic reason I decided to do everything in D4 S3 and my Barbarian basically insta shots everything in NM 100 and kills bosses in seconds. I don't even have a single uber legendary, so what's the fricking point of chasing them?

Like mapping? Yeah but it's just the baseline mapping system except instead of relying on map drops you go through different "timelines" with each one having a series of nodes you can do to fill out progress for some capstone quests to get a timeline blessing. You can then reset the timeline at the end of a path and corrupt it for further modifiers when you go back to it.

It’s kinda a catch 22 when releasing sequels that don’t match up to the other options out there. Should we really not expect better than a barebones game when they are directly competing with other games of a similar type over the same players. There’s only so much time in the day, why spend it in a shallow experience if you currently have much more.

It’s a shame the cycle repeats, Destiny was a shadow of what it became then the dropped a sequel with less to do. That should not be the norm or accepted as a matter of course. Do better, delay a game until it can match the direct competition so you don’t have to fix the game over the next year and a half garnering lots of negative press for the state it was in at launch. Same applies to D3-D4

15K isn't even one level 99 by the way, especially if you are soloing, even in group play using top2, it took anywhere from 20-25K baal runs in LoD to hit 99, depending on if you had a chaoser feeding you diablos. I did this 8 times, and have around a hundred 95-98s just in vanilla, and an uncountable number of lower levels than that. resurrected made the grind much much shorter, but I still enjoy the game just as much and play a baseline of at least a few dozen hours of D2 every month and go back and play a bunch more several times per year in old mods/online/offline just as I have for the past 24 years. your slop game will NEVER offer this staying power, be it d3 or d4 or last epoch or poe or whatever else you can name.

you never killed the final 2 (3) (probably 4 by now) postgame bosses. the fights take 30 minutes, every attack 1shots, and only about 2 builds out of the hundreds available can even get that far to reach that baseline. and I'm not even going into SSF, which is not even viable to reach midgame unless you get supremely lucky AND invest several thousand hours of gameplay into your character farming every tiny stat increase from trophys to RNG rolls on boss items to skill/stat books to using 7 different characters to farm specific bosses at midgame because zero builds are actually capable of doing more than a couple midgame bosses and then at endgame there's maybe 1 build per boss that is viable, sometimes zero builds are viable and people just find exploits to win or give up on the content for that patch and nobody clears it.

          Anonymous

You can't. D2R using a controller gives you perfect analog movement, while on mkb you are stuck with 8 binary directions. There's also other QoL that you only get with a controller, like health bars over enemy heads (why the frick is this locked to controllers) or auto aimed spells that are ridiculously strong.

Also forgot to mention another egregious controller only QoL, which is that the potion belt doesn't matter on controller because the heal button will always pull a potion from the inventory regardless if its on the belt or not.

              Anonymous

How exactly is that QoL? It's just dumbing down inventory management, which is part of the game. Same with aiming, how now having to play the game is QoL?

                Anonymous

It's QoL because it is objectively the most efficient way to play the game, which means you're forced to use a controller or else you're just getting forced to be objectively worse than controller users.

Ah, thought you meant the spell controls. Even though I mostly play traditional, I really like how you can bind and see how many identify and portal scrolls you have with the hotbar.
            >stuck with 8 binary directions
It's 16, and while you do have more precision on controller, it's tile-grid based in both cases. Both controller and mouse take you to the closest tile of where you wanted to go; you cannot stop between titles with a controller. They did a little preview of this in the old announcements with the grid toggled on.
            >like health bars over enemy heads (why the frick is this locked to controllers)
Only one enemy gets a floating health bar: the one you are currently targeting, as a means of feedback of who you're aiming at. It's the same on M&K where you only see your target's info and hp appears at the top, except you know who your mouse is over and controller needs more information. It's not general healthbars for all enemies. That said, I agree it should at least be an option to have mouse-over floating health bars, even if I personally wouldn't use it.

This was way harder to find than it should have been, but pic related. Players are always bound to the grid, controller or otherwise (even though D2R has a fully 3D overlay) because it still uses the base game's logic.

And an example of the health bar, which is just one enemy. Excuse the weird colors. I have HDR on and that always fricks up screenshots.

D3 is fun because there's so many movement abilities to chain together. At least Demon Hunter is fun. I'm too autistic and can't play anything else. Templar and Monk look fun too thougheverbeit.

What people don't get about the OP image is that while the Baal runs themselves may have been mechanically boring, they were still entertaining because the itemization in the game was good. Sure, D4 has a vastly more diverse endgame, but it's all for nothing because the items are fricking boring.

      Anonymous

The entire new wave of ARPGs is misguided and boring because they focus on the wrong thing (gameplay mechanics instead of itemization and economy)
The items are the gameplay, not moving your character around and using skills

        Anonymous

If they're going to make that the focus then they need to make it so players have to follow how to build guides and be forced to come up with their own unique builds instead of just copying a build point for point because then it's just a satan themed slot machine.

I always liked D3 because sending dozens of ragdolls flying in every direction was fun and satisfying
that's the one thing PoE2 still gets wrong. ragdolls are great in arpgs. Titan Quest and Grim Dawn understood that 20 years ago

  35. 4 weeks ago
    Anonymous

there isn't much difference between d3's slightly random rifts and running areas in d2. Both games have their good and bad. D4 is complete trash though and it's a pain just to get to level 60+

  36. 4 weeks ago

Poe 2 is going to finally fix the genre making so you still have the fun build autism and cool equipment grind and economy but now the gameplay is actually going to be good to and you have to execute your cool strategy well instead of just closing your eyes and mashing your damage spell. The latter worked when people had to figure out their own builds but now that everyone can just follow the best builds someone else made the genre has nothing going for it.

Diablo 1 and 2 were good because of the aesthetic. They were way more gory and gothic than whatever D3 and D4 are.
The progression system is a bit dated but you only need to play through them a few times.
