Yet Another Mechlab. No questions. Vastly increases customization beyond vanilla's dumbass system.
Other mods are give and take, I haven't played in a long time, and as much as I'd shill my own mod because the default damage colors are moronic, I won't.

Heroes of the Inner Sphere is good, it's dumb to have career mode and all that behind DLC. The rest can be passed but the extra biomes are neat.

what im mainly looking for is increased variety in the "procedural" missions... do the DLCs provide this? I'm assuming you're referring to that with the increased biome diversity... what about mission types? thanks for the info btw kind stranger! have this leddit gold on me!

There's a well-renowned mod called Coyotes Mission Pack. It requires all DLCs though, and I never played with it due to balance issues in the past. Things like a Patrol having an ambush of 60 heavy tanks or 10 Assault Mechs despite being risk 40. But it does have the variety you're looking for.

I’m pretty sure the career mode was apart of a free update that coincided wi the release of the DLC, but yeah the game was pretty barebones on release with what has got to be one of the worst spawn systems I’ve seen in a game in a while. Nothing like a literal Steiner Scout Lance appearing right behind you from thin air because the game used to spawn things that weren’t directly in your line of sight

Bumping this question. I have the JumpShip edition or whatever, I'm wondering if my friends and I could get a bit more out of the game with the melee DLC.
also what the FRICK is with this game and the DLC mission why the frick are they railroading us? I pissed off Davion and I'm losing out on so much money with these missions

DLC 1 adds a shitload of new mechs, new weapons, mech upgrades, and some new missions
DLC 2 adds a pretty fun mini campaign, new biomes, and some extra missions + mech variants
DLC 3 adds melee weapons as well as mechs that can use them, plus new maps and a new mini-campaign, also hatchetman

Why would you play MW5 on a tiny screen? It'll be a pain in the ass to focus fire on components.

The DLCs are fine (the one with career mode is the best), but the biggest changes from release come from optimizations. Loading into missions don't take an assload of time anymore. And it could be just me but the spawns and mapgen are a bit better too. No more putting the objective behind an unscalable cliff.

Yeah, mods make it super fun, I don't really care if it breaks the game because in MW4 you could do similar things by just boating something like 24 ER small lasers in an assault and because the game is insanely unfair towards the player by continuously spawning shit out of thin air and throwing waves of assault/heavy mechs at you and more than once spawning enemy units under the map but above the kill plane so they make it impossible for you to complete the mission, it's why I stopped playing it and went to Battletech instead, 3062 is pretty fun although I wish that game didn't run like shit.

The thing I liked most was how much the infantry mattered, They treated the mechs like tanks. Powerful assets but had to be backed up by infantry or they would be useless. Then it became a game of figuring out how best to cripple their infantry or AFW, stay at a range they couldn't fight optimally at, or pansy out of a fight while sacrificing men to save your AFW. Really really fun game.

Tankgays are indeed annoying but I wish BattleTech actually put more emphasis on tanks, aerospace, and other more conventional assets every now and then. I like Mechs as much as anyone else, but I also really like the idea of combined arms warfare with Mechs as one of the many units at a commanders disposal.
Yes yes, I know that Living Legends is a thing. But it still comes off as a very obvious mod.

I'm a tad overwhelmed by Battletech lore, but is there a reason why Mechs exist? Does it have to do with Fusion Engines and Myomer?

            Anonymous

Mechs exist because they exist. Ever since the first one was made everyone else knew they had to have one, and so they stuck. Mind you this is a setting where nuclear war was banned and in its place war on its own was normalized, so having the advantage in the form of battlemechs could tip the scales.

              Anonymous

I like 40ks justification for mechs (and other rando tech) in that they have schematics/tools to build this advanced shit but lack the capability to adapt it into superior form factors. everyone's just working with what they got

            Anonymous

Yes, micro fusion engines and myomer are the reasons mechs are more profitable than vehicles.

              Anonymous

That technology made mechs practical to design. In universe there a set of rules for war all the major powers in the setting agreed to play by. One rule stipulated that randomly biking planets was not a viable long term war strategy if you wanted to actually rule an empire and not a heap of irradiated rubble. So in this new set of confined space for weapons tech to develop someone looked at industrial mechs (which already existed by that point) and wondered how it would fare as a weapon of war.

Almost a century of development later, the Mackie, the first ever battlemech, was developed and stormed the battlefield in style. A company of the mechs managed to completely own zone a detachment of Kuritan(?) heavy tanks without so much as a scratch and suddenly everyone was looking at the battlemech in awe…and envy.

Yadda yadda yadda, age of battlemech begins. There ya go.

Mm, that's kind of what I expected. I'm fascinated by the idea of Myomer. Can tanks use Fusion Engines or is it too much power for economical use vs BattleMechs that need it for Myomer?

                Anonymous

They can, pretty sure superheavy tanks like Demolishers (Their Devastator variant) use them and they are a very credible threat to mechs on the field of battle.

                Anonymous

To my knowledge some tanks do use fusion engines but don’t seem to really benefit as much from myomer fibers. Many of them, especially the cheap as balls Scorpion medium tank, rely on more conventional combustion engines to maintain an edge of being dirt cheap to produce.

MW5 surprisingly shows off an actual in universe tactic with conventional tanks. Which is swarm mechs with them and hope they deal enough combined damage to be effective.

The story of the battlemech is just the story of the dreadnought. Everyone has to have one or they'll be at a disadvantage.

            Anonymous

            1. Myomer muscle which tanks can't really use
            2. Armor in battletech is ablative and not a binary penetrate/fail like armor in real life
            3. There isn't enough existing transport capacity to move millions of troops between planets in the setting
            4. Vehicles like tanks are more constrained in the types of environments they can operate in

The first one is pretty self explanatory.
The second is why a battlemech or tank doesn't have to worry about some infantryman with a strong guided missile - even a guided missile launched by a naval warship can be shrugged off by most mechs and require a second or third hit to kill or cripple.

The third is a really big one. You can't easily 100k soldiers across 20LY in Battletech. The largest military dropship in the setting can transport MAYBE 5k soldiers at once, and the largest military jumpships can only carry 20 dropships. Most dropships in the setting can carry maybe 500 - 1000 infantry, and most jumpships/warships can carry 4-8 dropships. A great house might have as many as 10 warships available to move troops.

It's not impossible to put a million soldiers on someone's planet, but it is logistically very difficult.

The fourth is a big deal when you don't know what kind of environment you're about to fight in - could be airless vacuum, shallow water, methane choked atmosphere, 2g's, 0.3g, ambient temperature could be +90 celsius or -100. Treads and wheels, contrary to what /k/ thinks, do not work as well as limbs and springs do in every environment. Limbed locomotion provides that utilitarian mobility for just about any possible environment you can think of.

So mix it together, what you get is most of the military revolving around rapid deployment of battlemechs which punch well over their weight, are easy to transport, don't require huge logistics trains or supply lines, can kill thousands of poor bloody infantry without breaking a sweat, and operate in just about any environment imaginable

There are the battletech mods with tanks now. Honestly bta 3025 and even roguetech are what I wish Battletech was from the start. I wish it was easier to make your own flashpoints, have a bit more say in what mechs you start with if you choose an what not. That would print money, why haven't they made it yet?

          Anonymous

Mechs were always the darlings of Batteltech, if you want to also use vehicles like artillery, vtols, tanks, hovercraft or battle armor you're shit out of luck besides Battletech 3062 or the mod you've mentioned. I don't know if Roguetech has vehicles. It is true though that Mechwarrior games frequently communicate the wrong impressions or just suck outright at portraying the battleground setting of Batteltech verse correctly where there is no such thing as a single lance just going in and fricking shit up. A lance in the field would always be supported by mechanized infantry at the very least.

Nothing is wrong with 4 at all honestly. I am biased though. I've always loved MW games. People want to nitpick about each iteration but for me it's just like "oh yay! more Mech Warrior!".

In retrospect it's well regarded, but it started the trend of simplification and at the time was lambasted for it.

            Anonymous

If your referring to the limited hardpoint cap on mechs, after replaying it and playing MW5 it definitely puts a major gap on how potent a mech can be, but it does make each individual chassis more unique in a sense. You can modify a mech within certain parameters and can still potentially change its mission goals but ultimately it’s no longer a build a bear style design. I played a whole play through with YAML and it became incredibly easy to break the game when I had unlimited access in the lab. In comparison without it, finding a rare Star league era mech or later variants is a huge find. Quad Warhammer 6rb is amazing and bullies lighter assaults. Even the Cyclops has found new life with the melee variant.

              Anonymous

There's that, but I actually agree with you about the hardpoints. Mech 3 showed that any chassis fulfilling any role just turns customization into a meta numbers game. The difference between a Madcat and an Orion was nothing more than a few tweaked settings in the mechbay, and that's just no fun. Heretical as it sounds to the lore-accurate types, I actually wish they'd go farther into specialization, with things like chassis specific buffs like how BattleTech did with their DLC mechs.
No, I mean stuff like not being able to determent where equipment or ammunition go. No ammo explosions or manual dumping. No single or double heat sinks, or losing equipment based off of damage or lost parts. Lots of little things that are usually staples of mech combat, but were all abandoned in favor of keeping the game as streamlined as possible.

          Anonymous

Nothing, but after 3 and pirate's moon by extension, it felt a little hollow

The simplified garage system and loss of a lot of side-grade parts and fun modular hardware really hurts it

Also, yes it started the trend of specific hardpoints on certain mechs which has since ruined the series completely

Great campaign though, but 3 really does take the cake on every front except accessability

Mechwarrior's biggest problem is that all the fighting in the games consists of turn-shoot "gameplay" mechanics. There's really no thinking involved and 1vs1 fights almost always devolve into wheeling around each other in a circle until someone dies. It just isn't that interesting, there's not a lot of thinking involved, the damagesponge nature of the mechs makes the general combat unsatisfying. There's no real use for anything under the heavy weight class either because everyone is pinpoint accurate and speed doesn't save you.

Honestly from what battletech is like in tabletop to what it's like in the shooters, the tabletop is way more fun to play.

                >tfw had a fight in Solaris once where the guy I fought had shot off all his ammo but couldn't kill me because I twisted and spread so well and he complimented by performance, saying that it had never happened before to him and then powered down letting me finish him

Battlemechs are at their best in large-scale operations and open warfare, absolutely

Something akin to Battlefront 2 (the old one) would be perfect for this sort of thing (big teams, army cost, multiple objectives, etc.)

Living Legends was a really close attempt honestly. It's a shame it fell appart, I miss it a lot

              >There's no real use for anything under the heavy weight class either because everyone is pinpoint accurate and speed doesn't save you
Hate this. Mech's weapons are supposed to be guided by targeting computers which themselves are supposed to be countered by any number of EM scramblers. You can still manually aim, but generally the mech moves around so much that it's pointless unless you're stationary or it's at point blank.
In a way, games like MechAssault actually got it better; since you're either locked on or you aren't, and where your weapons hit are a roll of the dice.

Even light mechs can definitely punch above their weight with some good piloting, though a lot of fights do turn into circle straifng-fests. I managed to take out an Atlas in a Raven by liberal use of jump jets in the Solaris Arena.

The music kicks ass, the retro visuals are great, and the lore is deep, but the core gameplay is love-it-or-hate-it, and even if it clicks with you, there's just not much variety. I 100%ed it and found little reason to keep playing afterwards.

heavy bipeds are only good in Silent Line.
tanks are only good in V and Verdict Day.
you can make quad and hover legs be good, but it will require efforts.
you'll probably end up using light/mid biped or reverse-joint legs, like 95% of the community.

Tanks and standard military equipment is still used in the setting and are still very effective but mechs are cool and super space technology lets them exist. To be honest you tankgays are kind of insufferable since you bring the same tired arguments into mech threads.

And almost all of those tired arguments are factually wrong too.

A lot of the tankgay b***hing is predicated on the false assumption that a mech MUST act like and be a tank with legs. It can't be anything else, it has to be a tank.

These morons would call helicopters and planes moronic because a single missile could blow them up. I've seen these morons argue that legs are inefficient and useless and I'm like, Black person you have a pair of fricking legs right now, but then I realize they never walk anywhere and use a scooter to get around.

Japanese mecha can be slow and heavy, problem is there's only like two games that do this right. SRW pretty much killed any chance of us getting a standalone super robot anime based game.

I wonder what causes the stark difference between Western mechs and easter mechs. Is it the demilitarisation of japan? The slight infantilization of their media? It's the western obsession with practicality? Perhaps it even goes deeper as relating to philosophical and spirtiual differences: individualist ideals in the west where a man with a tool can rise above his station where in japan a man his tool are one in the same with a set destiny—so the latter lean towards more innate personifaction

Votoms has a plot, but you'd better like the sound of votoms squelching because after 50 episodes it's going to be seared into your brain for life.

Three of the episodes are just recaps so you can skip those. Half of the original series is great, 1/4 is pretty good, and the other 1/4 depends on personal preference.

Okay, I'll trust you guys and watch episode one, ten, then twenty, and then forty, and then fifty one. I think that will give me a fair understanding of the show

Because that's the one I have on my PC right now and I was satisfied with it. If you want higher resolution you will have to get the 59gig one. I recommend you don't skip ahead and just watch episode one, otherwise you will ruin everything for yourself as following the episode structure closely is rather integral to enjoyment.

Okay, I'll give you that. It's actually Battletech and two (2) movies that bombed at the box office because normalgays thought they were too Japanese. (read: "not Battletech.") And there's also Titanfall, where the devs didn't consider their own giant robot game to be "mecha" because it wasn't similar enough to Battletech. Both are exceptions that prove the rule: Battletech dominates the world of non-Japanese mecha with a massive iron wiener.

The design philosophy for mecha in Japan is frequently that of an extension of or an identifier of the character of the pilot. You don't make mecha without them almost uniformly representing who is inside of them. Some mecha are obviously more pronounced than other, and in the realm of Real Robot, you often have uniform military mecha, but even then there are frequently characteristics that generally have the mech being just as much of a character as the pilot inside of it. The design theory needs to be expressive in this regard because mecha enthusiasts generally regard this as an important trait to any mech, Real Robot and Super Robot alike. Also flashier mechs tend to sell more toys/model kits, which are a wonderful supplemental market in Japan.

Western Mechs tend to usually be a stand-in or replacement for tanks, and as such tend to specifically just be built to be War Weapon Model X000A48 rather than strikingly specific and specialized character designs. Even in cases like Mechwarrior where you have mechs like the Atlas, its design seems to be staggeringly influenced by eastern mecha moreso than its Western contemporaries (some like the Shadow Hawkare literally shameless ripoffs and stolen designs). The factor of them being a pilot representative tends to be buried because that's not the focal point. Either they are straightforward war machines and the focus is on the greater objectives of the war at large/simulation of the capabilities of these war machines, or the mechs are a background weapon to a generally human/political story and incidental to the plot. The singular example I'd say where this line is blurred is Titanfall where the designs are not only extremely striking, but also heavily varied from one another, and speak volumes of who is piloting them.

        >its design seems to be staggeringly influenced by eastern mecha
Atlas originally was an outline of Votoms turned into a mech. Battletech ripped off a ton of Japanese designs from Macross and Dougram as well as other franchises that I do not know.

You are right but the point still stands. People love to jerk themselves over the fact how more superior and realistic western mechs are when half of their damn designs comes from Japan.

Battletech didn't rip off the designs. FASA contacted the studio and bought a license to use the designs in Battletech and then 20 years later they were sued by Harmony Gold and had a big legal fight about it where it was ultimately determined that the original artists and studio FASA licensed the designs from had already sold the license for distribution in north america to HG, so the court said FASA did their due diligence but were still guilty of violating the copyright and had to stop using the designs. FASA and HG settled out of court, and then FASA went bankrupt

So as much as some people hate on the clans, that was Fasa finally designing a majority of the mechs in house. We got designs like the Madcat (frick you clanners) the Daishi, the Uziel, Thanatos, Bushwacker, the Vulture and so many others that it shows the design ethos moving away from its earlier anime designs to something that would look more uniquely Battletech. It’s just a shame that outside of MW4 and MWO I haven’t seen hide nor hair of those mechs for almost 20 years.

Because when the clans were officially introduced they had objectively better…everything and was meant to be a hard replacement to all the old designs thus preventing further copyright lawsuits. Hopefully. That didn’t happen, but the clans did still massively jump up the power scale in a manner similar to how Primaris Marines in 40k were just better space man, clans were just better robots.

I still like the designs and even some of the lore but it’s not hard to notice the obvious power creep.

That's after numerous nerfs to their performance in the past it was so bad that there was no point to play anything but clan mechs. They still dominate the mid-long range engagement ranges.

Not when they first came out. When they first introduced clans it was strictly clans vs inner sphere for a while, and clans won 9/10 games. I thought I had the picture saved from one of the devs talking about it on twitter but I can't find it.

And that's fine? For frick's sake the most battletech games doesn't even utilize inner sphere unique takes omitting entirely the jankiness and moronation of their design.

even ignoring all the sjw diversity troony power fantasy political agenda shoved into it, its still fricking dogshit.
dogshit gameplay, dogshit at technical level, will unironically cook your cpu and has a memory leak that was never patched.

He is right about the game running like dogshit no matter the PC, the mods improve Battletech a great deal, but it's still insufferbale to have the game dip into 15 fps on a 3080ti with 64gigs of ram on Ryzen 5600x

In all fairness outside of this garbage the game itself doesn't contain anything else woke in it and more customization options during character creator don't upset me even if they were put together for "diversity points".

          Anonymous

That's not true. A bunch of the quests and a lot of the characters have a sort of 'soft wokeism' where liberal values are just taken and accepted on their face without any question whatsoever. You hear about old hollywood movies requiring gay characters to have bad things happen to them, etc. The writing in battletech is like that, but in the opposite direction, alongside a lot of infantile and naive goodguy/badguy storytelling.

It's just not written with nuance to it, it's written with, "We here at the company believe in sjw liberal values and so does everyone in our setting, except the bad guys but usually also the bad guys."

I've played through the game right now and the reaching you're going for right now is silly, it's a bunch of dumb periphery Black folk, of course they will be stupid. The storytelling whatever is there I ignore completely because the campaign is laughably bad.

Here we go again with the "BUT THEY'RE IMPRACTICAL AND UNREALISTIC" crap. Look, I don't care if they're not realistic. You realismbabies tried to ruin space games with your dumb science babble, and I still haven't forgiven you for that.

    >dude no FTL isn't real because mantises and rockmen can't scientifically exist
    >Starsector sucks because it's unrealistic, you can't just travel through slipstreams

Give it a break. You know Mario doesn't get this level of hate despite the fact that you can't shoot fire out of your hands after eating flowers, and you don't grow big after eating mushrooms. But noooo, now people decided that games need to adhere to some realistic standard.

Airstrikes hit in a forward facing line away from the targeting smoke, artillery goes in a square centered on top of the targeting smoke, artillery is generally better due to how enemies tend to cluster.

What is with the aggressive overabundance of ugly chicken walkers in Western mech design? They aren't anything resembling "efficient" (at least as far as the inefficiency of mecha could ever be considered efficient), they aren't aesthetically pleasing, and they definitely do not give off the impression of some kind of all-destroying war machine. But they are fricking EVERYWHERE that isn't blatantly ripping off an anime design.
