In order to move at superhuman speeds, you need superhuman strength.

This, it's pointless to have one without the other and I suppose if we're going to be pedantic then superhuman endurance so that your muscles don't rip and your bones snap and your arteries explode like balloons from using any of your superhuman physical abilities.

no, it's possible to have superhuman strengh without superhuman speed. just lots more slow-twitch muscles. able to bear incredible loads but have a low activation speed.

but yeah, superhuman speed without superhuman strength and endurance is impossible.

Are we talking some special level of speed? Like, leaving after images or Speed Force type shit? I don't see how you have one and not the other by virtue of having it to begin with.

You're thinking of human strength and human speed, superhuman strength/speed works according to made-up rules.

Dude One: You know, all that upper body strength really slows you down.

    Dude Two: I'm not slow.

Dude One: You didn't hit me.

Dude Two: If I had, you wouldn't be here.

Dude One: No argument...but you didn't.

It's actually a movie quote. Dude One is Brnadon Lee, Dude Two is Dolph Lundgren. Showdown in Little Tokyo. That movie is chock full of funny dialog.

In the end though, it's the big dude who kills the main bad guy and fricks the girl.

I should rewatch it, such a good movie.

Superhuman strength can make you faster than peak human and allows you to weather blows that happen during your run, but superhuman speed just makes you more fast.
I'd rather be stronger and a little bit faster, than be much faster and be unable to take a hit.

Super speed can be used as an active defense, an attack, and a travel power. Might is used for attacks, and can affect maximum health. However, super speed costs three points per rank to might's one. They're pretty evenly balanced.

Assuming you have all the implied side powers then super speed by a long shot. Otherwise strength wins simply because the speedster would run into something and immediately explode

  9. 2 months ago
    Anonymous

No, super strength does not give you super speed, if you go with that logic then super speed is super strength but even more so, because its higher.
Anyway this discussion is pointless. Nothing, nothing at all ever compares to speed. You need to make speedsters moronic for them to ever lose.
Its literally impossible to anything beat a speedster unless they are one themselves.
Throw a fricking stone at 99% speed of light you and blow up a planet, i don't think people understand how overpowered speed is. Nothing can ever hit you, you can react to anything anyone ever does, you can kill someone in a nanosecond before they even understand what's happening, assuming you can reach light speed you could go around the planet 7.5 times in a single second, you could wipe out humanity in an minute or less.
theres a reason that regardless of the game you are playing, speed is always the best stat, all others are secondary to it and why even in games that attempt to balance it, being able to move faster even if just a bit more, is enough to beat everything.
There is a reason mongols raped the planet, it was horses, speed.

I'm willing to make the concession that a person with super strength will be able to run faster than a peak human but not as fast as a speedster, as the speedster will be stronger (in terms of burst effort, rather than sustained effort at least) than a peak human but not as strong as the guy with super strength.
In observance with Newton's second law, anyway; force = mass × acceleration. I know capeshit glosses over physics for convenience of escaping plot holes and inconsistent power levels, but I think it's a reasonable way to handle these things.

      >No, super strength does not give you super speed, if you go with that logic then super speed is super strength but even more so, because its higher.
What about sudden bursts like big jumps or leaps? What about durability to survive said speed in the first place?

if you have superhuman speed, then you have superhuman strength to survive your feet hitting the ground at mach 5
if you have superhuman strength, then you also have superhuman speed by the ability to propel your feet downwards at mach 5

Super speed with a special forcefield 1 tenth of a millimeter above my skin that activates automatically when I move beyond a specific speed and protect me from any harmful interaction with the world (like air friction, or crashing into walls) while also protecting selectively the world from me (preventing me from vaporizing a civilian by accidentally bumping into them) and that I can tune down or even turn off with a thought, with an additional effect of time dilatation proportional to my speed allowing me to remain perfectly aware of my trajectory and surroundings when I move fast and that I can switch on and off at will.

Speed is harder to balance, and needs more restrictions than strength of it becomes the god stat, so speed wins.

It depends. Does superhuman speed come with increased reaction times and thinking speed? If so, speed, in most cases, with the gulf getting wider as the power of both increases. It might be relatively even early on, but eventually muscle man is going to be borderline standing still and at your mercy.

Superhuman speed is supreme in settings with one hit kills from easily obtainable weapons (ie the real world).

Superhuman strength is supreme in settings with HP.

Moving twice as fast is definitely better than lifting twice as much. Otherwise it depends on the system.

Assuming you have the necessary perception and mental faculties to have full control, I'd say the speed. It's effectively a time slow on the speedster's end and while they may not be strong enough to do some things that a super strength guy can even during that slowed time, it has far more uses and utility than just being able to hit really hard and pick up heavy things. I thought this movie had a fun depiction of it.

Each on its own presents more issues than they'd be worth. If your meat body moves too fast it and everything around it will get shredded by wind resistance and shit. I can only wonder what would happen to unshielded flesh if it suddenly went supersonic. Super strength is not super durability and if your mass doesn't increase with your strength proportionately you're gonna end up having a real bad time.
