Which version is the best of Final Fantasy VI and "truest" to the original version, Revised Old Style Edition, Ted Woolsey Uncensored Edition or the RPGOne retranslation?

    >RPGOne retranslation
This one's cancer made by people that didn't know Japanese for shit and is just terrible in every way
    >Revised Old Style Edition, Ted Woolsey Uncensored Edition
These are just autistic copypastes of bits and pieces of the GBA script and the SNES script with occasional rewordings by people that don't know Japanese either.

If you want to play an accurate translation, just play the GBA one and ignore the spergy "editions", I think they're all less accurate than it.

This, basically. It's not absolutely perfect, But it's the most accurate one we've got.
On that note, I hate how there isn't a romhack that straight up ports the GBA script to the SNES rom. There's always something the gay hackers adds/removes because they think they know better.

That reason is that is was the only way to play the game in English back when it was new.

it was only popular to play when it was because it had good storytelling, assisted by a good translation. FF6 has braindead gameplay even for a Final Fantasy.

Fucking Final Fantasy 4 was popular in its time, and that translation only halfway qualifies as English.

I recently played FF I-III Pixel Remasters, SNES FF V and now playing FF VI on GBA emu. Highly highly recommend the GBA version over say, the PR. Mostly due to extra content and ability to frameskip for fast grinding / save state for stealing and metamorphing purposes. PR versions have some QoL features but are not necessary. It does retain some censoring (no Celes being smacked around).. but I think the content makes up for it.

Anybody who truly cares about the text plays the Japanese version. Most just want the fixes and QoL patches but don't want to install them themselves because they keep on causing game-crashes, so they look to others who figured out how to do it right.

"Most" will play an "improved" re-release. Who do they think their audience is? I was going to say a hack like them_bones' conservative FF1 patch would be a good all-in-one solution, but even that has its issues. If a handful of spergs can't appreciate the original with its warts and all then that's tough shit on them.

Did you also write angry letters to Square for including a dash button, etc. in their FF6 rereleases from 1999 on?

The hacks are supposed to be alternatives to the sucky official rereleases, so no surprise the scope is more than translation.

If you want to play any of these, play them for the QoL and bugfix changes if those things interest you. Yes, the original US translation is censored and is inaccurate and cuts out or obfuscates certain plot elements, but it's not like it outright changes the whole story to make it say something it doesn't. Almost all the main story beats are there and accounted for, as are the character arcs. And if you desire accuracy, the GBA translation is more than adequate, and I believe there's already a patch for that.

    t. played the Woolsey Uncensored patch years ago. It was fine, but nothing to get excited about. The QoL changes made more of an impact than the retranslation did. The last playthrough I did was with the T-Edition hack, which uses the GBA translation wholesale save for the parts that are original to the hack.

The problem with that is there is no definitive answer for everyone. So here's a handy-dandy little guide to dramatically limiting your scope to figure out which Final Fantasy I-VI release is right for you. Are you an OLDFAG? 1987-2003 is up your alley. Are you a NEWFAG? Check out anything 2004-2020. Or are you a CASUAL to RPGs? Then you want the new 2021-2022 Pixel Remaster.

Maybe is because i'm a ESL but i don't mind the RPGOne translation, so far i recruited Gau and Celes and i'm kinda liking it, sure there is a few instances where i think the swearing is a bit out of place "you son of a bitch!!, "no shit sir", "don't be a slut" but is not a deal breaker for me

The problem with the RPGOne translation isn't bad writing or random swearing, but that the translator didn't know Japanese and was mostly just either mistranslating shit or rewording the official translation (which was frequently wrong).
There's just no reason to play it. It's massively inaccurate and has no real purpose.

That's always been a retarded take. No one wants Janus to be renamed to Jaki, Schala to Sara and Frog to Kaeru. Wanting to get the MEANING of something translated correctly is not the same as wanting to get the FORM of the words in a new language with no change whatsoever.

Though I do agree that Grandleon is a better name than Masamune.

On a related note, IIRC this is exactly what was done for the FFVII retranslation, and a lot of people weren't happy with the result, since it meant renaming a lot of established character names (for instance, he renamed Zack to Zax because that's actually what the kana translates to) and some items and monsters were also renamed inconsistent with how they're known in FF games in general (for example, Phoenix Down to Phoenix Tail off the top of my head).

I hate how these people can't work together to make a nicely organized, modular patchset tested for compatibility.
One patch for translation of choice, one huge bugfix only patch (with revert patches for the turboautists who need specific bugs for their play style) and a few split up enhancement patches for various aspects of the game (revert regional changes, add general comfort features, change some gameplay specific mechanics).
I am just a normal guy, I'm not gonna play the same game five times each with one of those huge patch projects but I'm autistic enough to have a gnawing feeling of knowing there could be some extra fine tuning in another patch that I didn't choose because it had some really dumb changes in other parts of the game.

The guy who made this one pretty much comes out and says it, too:
        https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/7005/
        From the readme:
        >This brings me to my handwringing. What does Project III bring to the table to make it a standout? The answer I keep coming to is a painfully honest, "Well, nothing."
        >The only straw I can grasp, one small shred that sets me apart, is my attention to detail and consistency.
        >Project III, unlike Project II, was made entirely with my own tastes in mind. No more and no less.
        >If you don't see the need for yet another project like this for FFVI--just one more revised script with fixes and enhancements by a Sabin-obsessed egomaniac--rest assured, you're not alone. Even as I write this second revision of my reflection, I'm vacillating on the idea of a public release. Project III really doesn't need to exist.
This one was hilarious, because apparently it ended up being publicly released on romhacking.net, apparently against his wishes somehow, and he got mocked mercilessly here for making yet another derivative "retranslation" project and got massively butthurt over it. Unfortunately I can't find the thread anymore.

how can someone be so purist about translations yet not be as purist when it comes to gameplay, how the game was literally shipped and played back in the days?

        Anonymous

Can you specify "purist about translations"?

If you mean accuracy to the Japanese original, i.e. removing the "impurities" of Woolsey, the only FF6 person I've seen who actually qualifies is KWhazit. KWhazit's work is great, and would be a great spurce for a true ground-up retranslation project. But beyond a few enthusiasts there's really not much demand for it. Most English speakers coming to the game want to come out with a sense of shared experience with their English-speaking community. You don't get that if you throw out Woolsey entirely and change "Phoenix Down" to "Phoenix Pinion" and all that.

So different people have an idea for what's "pure", and most involve some sense of what English-speaking FF6 fans have experienced across the totality of the official releases.

I don't think they thought about it much - dashing was introduced in FFV IIRC as an equippable Thief ability, so they just pasted it over as a Relic for the next game. The only actual argument anyone ever has for the original Woolsey version is "It's the one I played, so you're raping my childhood by playing something else".

There's a base patch that only changes the script, uncensors graphics, and adds a few more minimal changes like B-button dash and a few fixes for potentially dangerous bugs, which keeps the gameplay in battles more or less how it was originally experienced otherwise. There's a more extensive patch that fixes a ton of other bugs and oversights, which sounds enticing and, in theory, gets the game closer to "the developers' intentions", but they nevertheless change how the game works quite substantially. And then there's one that actually changes some other things in the game to "improve it", but that's kind of subjective. And there's versions of all these that change the opera scene lyrics, but that's whatever.

The only actual argument anyone ever has for the original Woolsey version is "It's the one I played, so you're raping my childhood by playing something else".
Just play the GBA version, it's far more accurate and the only ones bitching about it are autists with an unhealthy attachment to the Woolsey one.

GBA version has slowdown out the ass, lower resolution, and shitty sound quality. Not worth it even for the extra content IMO.

This is blatantly obviously just some guy going through Mato's notes and changing those things he commented on.

Basically spelled out in the twue mission statement since Mato did his thing, not a secret

          So?

          Idk, you be the judge.
That's a snapshot of the kinds of edits one can expect. If it looks acceptable to you, then go for it.

"Ted Woolsey Uncensored" actually means "we fucked up text that was perfectly fine with autistic shit"

"Fan" there is the ancient RPGOne translation, not Ted Woolsey Uncensored.
