Why are Super Mario World ROM hacks so much more fun than any of the 2D games Nintendo ever pumped out?

Why are Super Mario World ROM hacks so much more fun than any of the 2D games Nintendo ever pumped out? I just get a constant supply of fun or interesting games from SMW Central. All the creativity and soul are in here and not the New Supers that Nintendo put out too much.

What's wrong with zsnes? The last time I emulated snes games was like 10 years ago and it was fine then. If the emulator worked fine with these old games back then, why would that change?

                Anonymous

ZSNES never strived for accuracy, but making sure games could run on ancient hardware.

Modern SNES homebrew and hacking development requires super-accurate emulation because some of the really ambitious stuff will add in SA-1 co-processor support for very unique function calls.
Stuff that can work on real hardware.
Some older SNES ROM hacks were designed around ZSNES functionality that was literally impossible on real hardware, which is to say, not emulating it.

ZSNES also has an exploit that will allow a maliciously crafted ROM to escape sandboxing and start executing things on your Windows system.

ZSNES is an old piece of shit that hasn't been updated since 2004. Mario hacks used to be designed on it because it was what ran on any shitty machine, and thus everyone used it, but now that other emulators are far more accurate, there is little reason to use ZSNES, though ironically there are Mario hacks that only work correctly on ZSNES because they are built around the inaccuracies and won't work on real hardware.

Using zsnes by now is like choosing to post gameplay through gifs instead of through webms.

                >If the emulator worked fine with these old games back then, why would that change?

ZSNES is generally good and fine for actual old games, but these new romhacks are not old games. They are new games that are built atop old games.

ZSNES is so off I ran into inconsistencies just writing my own patches. I accidentally wrote code past the end of a bank and ZSNES just kept reading like nothing was wrong

Most of, yes. Then there are the brilliant ones that feel like they could have been a highly praised commercial release.
But that's why you read the reviews, look up youtube videos, reach /vr/ recommendations, and do this funny thing called trying them out to see if you like them and quitting if you don't.

  4. 2 years ago

They draw on decades of level design experience that didn't exist in the 90s.
They do subversive things that wouldn't fly in a commercially released game by Nintendo.
A lot of them are actually very shit.
But yeah the best SMW hacks are some of the best platformers ever released.

By the way if a hack says Difficulty: Standard that means it starts out as hard as world 8 in the original SMW and reaches kaizo difficulty by the last world.
If you see the words "save states recommended" then avoid. Look for reviews that say someone beat the thing on a real SNES.

I hate to admit it, but these hacks rarely ever get to be Nintendo quality. I had more fun with NSMB2 than with most of these hacks. You see, people are creating this with their free time for themselves, but do not have enough care to make something polished that will make people enjoy it all through.

tldr; The levels always turn out too long, too hard or with too many nasty sections. It's not easy to get the perfect balance of challenge and reward in a Mario level. Sometimes, they are really worthwhile.

Hacks in general kind of died off after Super Mario Maker became a thing. Honestly, if I'm playing a hack I would prefer for it to at LEAST have custom music or palettes. I am not hearing smw_overworld again for the 5000th time.

Looks pretty imo, great water. Would playtest, specially if there was a good selection of ports.

I think my favorite thing about SMW hacks so far is the stupid meme hack known as Mario's Mystery Meat, and it has a compressed, yet functional SHMUP section that also uses capcom's sound samples flawlessly. Imagine playing Super Mario and it fricking squeezes in Area 88 into the thing somehow.

Honestly, the only Mario-type game, which actually plays like SMB3/SMW I actually like is New Super Marisa Land. At least it had the essence and soul, and full of original art, powerups, music, I can forgive the slippery controls.

The New Super Mario series are made for 5 year old children who can enjoy the annoying voices and the sugarcoated, but ugly 2,5D art. Not to mention the lacklustre levels and ideas which were nothing else, but poor hodjpodj remakes of the old-school stuff without any interesting additions.

The romhacks are also no... kaizo stuff and full of random ecclectic remakes without proper thought behind them.

What are some romhacks with power ups that are different from the main series?
