Why are Super Mario World ROM hacks so much more fun than any of the 2D games Nintendo ever pumped out? I just get a constant supply of fun or interesting games from SMW Central. All the creativity and soul are in here and not the New Supers that Nintendo put out too much.

I can smell the onions and HRT oozing from your pores
what? I'm a member who mostly lurks. And now I make comments on the hacks I play to share my thoughts. what are you on about?
you gotta understand some normie casuals are based so shut the frick up and let these homies enjoy /vr/ you projecting cavewoman

>Most of the recent hacks are Kaizo garbo
That is definitely true, there's way too much fricking kaizo. i hate it but at least there's a filter you can use to hide kaizo
Any good Standard: Normal recommendations? I tend to gravitate towards them when life gets stressful
i think i played all of Gamma V's hacks, dont even know why i did that
Super Mario Bros 3: The Secret Place Demo, A Hack Thing 2, Sicari
I can think of more when I see em, but lots of good choices especially from 2019 to 2020
oh boy i love SMAS:SMB3 graphics in SMW, for some reason i have more nostalgia for SMAS than SMW
Actually playing Sicari
That's a good game indeed: Looks like a totally diferent game
For those who have finished it, I have a question:
What am I supposed to do in the Ancient Temple?
Panic in the mushroom kingdom 1 and 2, SMB1X, Bowser Rampages Again, This HAck Needs a Name
those are a few i can remember now that are enjoyable
I was blown away by New Super Mario World 2 - Around the World. Also works on Everdrive.
This is coming from someone else who's beaten all of Gamma V's hacks.
>become interested in playing
>go through the trouble of downloading it and a Super Mario World because smwcentral only gives a file to patch instead of the rom ready
>run it
>receive basedjak giving me a lecture
Lmao. zsnes zoomers larping as boomers BTFOd once again. Get a real emulator, kid
What's wrong with zsnes? The last time I emulated snes games was like 10 years ago and it was fine then. If the emulator worked fine with these old games back then, why would that change?
ZSNES never strived for accuracy, but making sure games could run on ancient hardware.
Modern SNES homebrew and hacking development requires super-accurate emulation because some of the really ambitious stuff will add in SA-1 co-processor support for very unique function calls.
Stuff that can work on real hardware.
Some older SNES ROM hacks were designed around ZSNES functionality that was literally impossible on real hardware, which is to say, not emulating it.
ZSNES also has an exploit that will allow a maliciously crafted ROM to escape sandboxing and start executing things on your Windows system.
Interesting, thanks for the response. That explains a lot
Thanks, it had its place in time.
ZSNES is an old piece of shit that hasn't been updated since 2004. Mario hacks used to be designed on it because it was what ran on any shitty machine, and thus everyone used it, but now that other emulators are far more accurate, there is little reason to use ZSNES, though ironically there are Mario hacks that only work correctly on ZSNES because they are built around the inaccuracies and won't work on real hardware.
Using zsnes by now is like choosing to post gameplay through gifs instead of through webms.
>If the emulator worked fine with these old games back then, why would that change?
ZSNES is generally good and fine for actual old games, but these new romhacks are not old games. They are new games that are built atop old games.
They don't give ROMs because Nintendo would slam down on them hard if they got caught, lmao. Anyway do what
said and get an emulator that isn't dogshit like Snes9x v1.53, or Higan.
>doesn't get the joke
>doesn't know hosting roms is an invitation for Nintendo to shut you down harder than AM2R and Mario Royale combined
ZSNES is so off I ran into inconsistencies just writing my own patches. I accidentally wrote code past the end of a bank and ZSNES just kept reading like nothing was wrong
Most of, yes. Then there are the brilliant ones that feel like they could have been a highly praised commercial release.
But that's why you read the reviews, look up youtube videos, reach /vr/ recommendations, and do this funny thing called trying them out to see if you like them and quitting if you don't.
I don't think any 2d Mario has had SOVL since the 90s
They draw on decades of level design experience that didn't exist in the 90s.
They do subversive things that wouldn't fly in a commercially released game by Nintendo.
A lot of them are actually very shit.
But yeah the best SMW hacks are some of the best platformers ever released.
By the way if a hack says Difficulty: Standard that means it starts out as hard as world 8 in the original SMW and reaches kaizo difficulty by the last world.
If you see the words "save states recommended" then avoid. Look for reviews that say someone beat the thing on a real SNES.
Just use the filter

nintendo lacked any form of soul during the NSMB era which is why its now so easy for fans to make mario games that are infinitely cooler and more fun
They're not, they're noticeably amateurish most of the time.
That hack is lame and supports itself on the meme.
I think this would've been better if it wasn't for the final boss being Cthulhu talking like he's a Jojo villain and also being a crappy Noob Boss spamfest.
I hate kaizo shite, but some of the stuff they have done with custom asm shit like sprites, gameplay modification, etc. is amazing.
Punch-out themed level
Split screen SMW hack where both screens interact with each other
Custom kamek boss
The original bullshit final boss
>Split screen SMW hack where both screens interact with each other
dtothefourth is the creator of that level. He creates all types of neat romhacks, Secret of Mario is great.
She's really good at cool ASM like that. Another good hack is JUMP, it's hard but some of the stuff pulled off there is incredible
>She
Dude's a troon now? Lmao what the frick is up with the smw community?
who gives a shit
hehe dil8
autism and poz.
>She
Come on.
Kitiku, Mushroom Kingdom under crimson skies, and Jump hacks are interesting but you're right, nothing beats the vanilla experience.
Sure smells like HRT in here
Also Mario Maker is better and more creative than the autustic romhack community
>Mario Maker is better
It would be if ninty didn't randomly delete and ban courses for no reason
Pretty sure they fixed that
Well that's good, but frick them for deleting my dogshit courses
its the exact same kind of autism you degenerate
>Mario Maker is better
Look at this daft c**t.
Look at him and laugh!
Romhacks get feedback for an existing product.
soul, no mandate
it's not that hard OP
Go play this one. (with savestates)
It's really good.
What hack is that one? Looks nice.
The Second Reality Project Reloaded (2008)
probably one of the best smw hacks ever made
>better core gameplay
>minimal kaizoshit
>more SOVL
Reject 2D mario romhacks, embrace 3D
>minimal kaizoshit
there's also less hacks in general. why let something you can filter out (like kaizo) ruin your view of the whole thing in general?
Although i do agree 3d mario hacks are super cool
The quantity of 64 hacks have been ramping up a lot lately. There's plenty of quality content that already exists.
?t=1948
I really liked this. The fact it goes split screen when you walked away from the other player was great. You could each dick around and explore levels on your own and then meet back up.
Hated the physics when I tried it. Jump was all wrong.
I play the original version of TSRP2 over the remake because the music was awful. I couldn't stand the original music.
I hate to admit it, but these hacks rarely ever get to be Nintendo quality. I had more fun with NSMB2 than with most of these hacks. You see, people are creating this with their free time for themselves, but do not have enough care to make something polished that will make people enjoy it all through.
tldr; The levels always turn out too long, too hard or with too many nasty sections. It's not easy to get the perfect balance of challenge and reward in a Mario level. Sometimes, they are really worthwhile.
>You see, people are creating this with their free time for themselves
t. never played a hack in the past ten years
Bro, the average player would easily get filtered by a JUMP team hack. It's the best example of SMW trivia circlejerk there is out there. It's only good if you already know a bit about SMW hacking.
>tfw wasted hours of my youth making a hack that I never released
I'd do anything to reclaim those hours
Posting one more screenshot for the hell of it.
Jump 1 and half are completable by normie standards. Only some of the special stages will have you tearing your hairs out.
Just hours. The sonic bit looks awful btw. Need more vanilla hacks
Hacks in general kind of died off after Super Mario Maker became a thing. Honestly, if I'm playing a hack I would prefer for it to at LEAST have custom music or palettes. I am not hearing smw_overworld again for the 5000th time.
Thank you. I think I'll eventually just release this thing as a barely cohesive level pack.
>Hacks in general kind of died off after Super Mario Maker became a thing.
Opposite dear boy. They fricking exploded after maker.
Kaizo hacks got a huge fricking boom in popularity after Mario Maker 1 and 2 released. Unfortunately.
>Unfortunately.
I'll take kaizo over the millionth pick a pipe or enemy spam that goes for "creative" maker levels.
Any people with life avoid stupid shit like Kaizo Mario hacks. They are made for asian teens and bored virgins.
It's surprising you aren't a fan
hey pal, you can't just go around calling people asian like that
So what filtered you so hard? Quickie world or some toddler bs like that?
Looks pretty imo, great water. Would playtest, specially if there was a good selection of ports.
I think my favorite thing about SMW hacks so far is the stupid meme hack known as Mario's Mystery Meat, and it has a compressed, yet functional SHMUP section that also uses capcom's sound samples flawlessly. Imagine playing Super Mario and it fricking squeezes in Area 88 into the thing somehow.
Honestly, the only Mario-type game, which actually plays like SMB3/SMW I actually like is New Super Marisa Land. At least it had the essence and soul, and full of original art, powerups, music, I can forgive the slippery controls.
The New Super Mario series are made for 5 year old children who can enjoy the annoying voices and the sugarcoated, but ugly 2,5D art. Not to mention the lacklustre levels and ideas which were nothing else, but poor hodjpodj remakes of the old-school stuff without any interesting additions.
The romhacks are also no... kaizo stuff and full of random ecclectic remakes without proper thought behind them.
What are some romhacks with power ups that are different from the main series?
