I'm getting sick and tired of indie devs just making ugly shit or heavily relying on fantasy to introduce gameplay or story elements that they can't explain in any other way.
Sunhaven and My Time at Portia for instance, why do they keep doing this faux chibi style where everyone has gigantic heads? It's ugly as frick.

I get it's easier to animate and draw, plus convenient for portraits, but you're missing an entire body to characterize the players and end up making someone that looks like an overgrown baby instead.
Besides, Harvest Moon always had a dash of fantasy to it but overall it was still quite grounded and nothing more than a quiet townvillage with cozy people. You don't need to have massive bright colors, crystals, spirits and all manner of bullshit to have a detailed appealing world.

Stardew's farming is shallow, the combat sucks, the characters are uninteresting and at worst unpleasant, and the art style is pretty bad
Its positives only lie in having mods, multiplayer, and a customizable farm

I think that it's because, ironically enough, farm sims are not about the farm. There's a reason Farming Simulator doesn't get the same attention for instance.

Farming Sims are more about the surrounding town and characters and their stories. The farm itself exists as part of the gameplay loop and to support it, but it's not the most interesting part of the game and neither should it be.
Farming is the core of the gameplay, the villagers are the core of the game.

Best example would probably be Rune Factory. Farming is important to get money and good items but what do you need those for? To expand the town with upgrades, to craft gifts to the villagers and explore the world with them.
It's still an adventure game at it's core, it just features downtime mechanics to earn money in a slower but methodical way. But remove the girls from the series, replace the villagers with generic merchant NPCs, and suddendly the game loses a lot of it's charm.
Consider that in Rune Factory you can eventually get to a point that you automatize your farm, leaving 90% of the field work to your animals.

Stardew Valley understood this and that's why you get sprinklers. You set up your fields but you don't have to spend the entire day working on them past the first one, you just check after a few days to collect the rewards.
Even the first Harvest Moon understood this and that's why you get a visit after 2 years that grades your achievemnts in dealing with the people, not the farm. You're even mocked for being rich but still single!

Farming Sims have got to reduce the menial tasks and replace them with decision making instead while working a lot more in making their worlds more charming and interesting.
You don't need to force the players to water their crops every day. Let them instead plan what they'll be harvesting in 7 days and what they can do in the meantime instead.

      >Farming is the core of the gameplay
Never agreed more, but I would say everything else is the core of the game. (Good) design in these kind of games are mandatory, be it the farm, the town, the characters or the music. Atmosphere is key for a good experience playing them. The reason why games like the original HM, BtN and some of the Rune Factory games are great is because the individual aspects make great packages.

Basically a huge all-in-one gameplay overhaul mod that has individual modules for combat, professions, taxes and a bunch of stuff which you can enable or disable at will. Like I said, it's worth using just to replace some of the objectively useless professions with better ones (like making mega bomb crafting costs cheaper). And I'm not kidding when I said it's buggy, it almost got banned from Nexus a while ago thanks to a memory leak (affecting SVE users only, funny enough)

            Ah, I see.

My main issue with SV isn't the gameplay. It's that the world is really boring and doesn't feel cohesive. There's medieval magical guilds alongside modern buses.

I also don't like a lot of the characters.

              >My main issue with SV isn't the gameplay. It's that the world is really boring and doesn't feel cohesive.
That's because its creator is a shut-in who only really knows the world through the internet, so the only "personality" the game has is in its messages about CAPITALISM BAD and shoving 2D archetypes into the game instead of making PEOPLE. Harvest Moon was made by people who understood what it meant to be a part of a tight-knit community, and that really shows in everything from its festivals to how the people go about their day-to-day lives.

The only reasons Stardew Valley got popular were because of the mods and because it filled the void that HM left behind, but it's inferior in nearly every way that matters

I have no idea why you people think Stardew is anti-capitalism when it's all about being your own boss, running your own farm making as much money as possible. You can even have the junimos running around working for you on your farm, for free, which is an interesting implication when you think about it. There's nothing more capitalist than that. Stardew is anti-wageslave because ape himself was a wageslave and hated it, that's why he made stardew.

The intro where you're trapped in the wage cage. Or how Jojo is treated as a soulless megacorp who wants to turn Pelican Town into a parking lot for their megastore. They obviously failed because I'd do the latter if it meant Pierre suffers for being a price gouging shill.

That's the thing, joja is set up as the villain for wanting to ruin the community while the local store is presented as the good guy, but pierre is a bigger scumbag on a personal level and he is still very obviously all about capitalism.

I just wish the world was more cohesive.

The one that turns the game into a e-girl stalker simulator because anyone who uses it won't concern themselves with the rest of the world.

Just don't minmax then, by nature games where you sell stuff to make money is going to have minmax over which items/crops makes the most money every season.

tbh you would have to go through lobotomy to stop minmaxing, our brain is wired to it

I think randomized sell prices could help

And then... people would just go planting every seed kinda of seed

Tell me more, what would the crops and activities be?

        Anonymous

You'd have standard crops like corn, potatos, carrots and the like.

Biggest activities would be a focus on hunting wild game and warding off animals from your herds and crops.

Is runefactory 4 worth checking out? Last one i played was 2 and i wasnt thrilled half tge game felt lime it was locked behind having a kid.

Rune Factory improved so much from 2 to 3 and then again from 3 to 4 that people that start with newer games will have trouble going back to the old ones.
Definitely try 3 and 4. 3 is getting a re-release on Switch and PC very soon (next month? not sure) but from what I've heard the new content is very small, so don't feel bad about playing the original if you can

RF4 is arguably the best game in the series, the only problem with it is the RNG events every day so you may need to wait a a few days to trigger them to progress the story or romance events. Though last I've heard that the remaster fixed the story events RNG and made it a priority to trigger them the moment you have fulfilled the prerequisite to trigger the events.

That kind of game peaked with rune factory 4, stardew doesn't even come close.
Luckily the new rune factory spin off is looking good, rf 6 is promising.

Why are these games so afraid to give you a history in the world?

I want reunite with a childhood friend and all that cheesy shit. Loved that with Back to Nature.

    >was made by a single guy in his free time.
He was a neet who somehow lucked into getting a sugar mama. He didn't make it in his free time, because that would mean he had a job and obligations. He had no job and had his girlfriend pay his way while he made a game.

Ape is a chad and his girlfriend looks like moot so it's not hard to see how he came into that dynamic. But she's a good catch for believing in him, sticking around and essentially funding him, it certainly paid off huge for her.
But it's not like ape was a total neet, he did have a job before he started working on stardew. It's because of hating those jobs that he made his game. Not hard to see where he got joja's uniform from.

things that are good and necessary:
    >sprites over soulless 3d garbage engines
    >8 directional movement that fits original snes gamepad/WASD
    >farm with individual tiles, larger area the better
    things that are gay:
    >catching grasshoppers and frogs and shit like you're in North Korea
    >designated plots for farming that remove all the planning around plot sizes and configuration for best yields/profits
I can tolerate most of the weebshit but it's the actual farming gameplay and shitty 3d engines that ruin all the recent games

Pathetic, also at this point Ridgeside Village is a better option if you are aiming for a Vanilla+ experience

My bad, I forgot to quote the post I was replying to

Basically a huge all-in-one gameplay overhaul mod that has individual modules for combat, professions, taxes and a bunch of stuff which you can enable or disable at will. Like I said, it's worth using just to replace some of the objectively useless professions with better ones (like making mega bomb crafting costs cheaper). And I'm not kidding when I said it's buggy, it almost got banned from Nexus a while ago thanks to a memory leak (affecting SVE users only, funny enough)

If I found joy in doing literal fricking chores, I'd do them in real life, In fact, I just had a delicious desert of homegrown strawberries and vanilla ice cream, and soon I'll have some excellent tomatoes. It took me way less time to grow actual plants than you homosexuals spend playing your shitty farming sims, and I actually get a tangible reward out of it,

SV's biggest failure is that 99% of the characters are annoying and have zero charisma, the only halfway redeemable girls are Haley and Emily, and even with that the first Story of Seasons on the 3DS did better the archetype of girl who learns to be humble and enjoy farm work.

The Friends of Mineral Town remake is a pretty good remake, the only filter is the new character portraits, but once you get past those, the game is just like the GBA game with more QoL features.

A Wonderful Life (GCN) boots you out if you don't marry. They'll force Celia on you as a last option if you didn't ask anyone out by the last day, but you can say no and frick off if you'd like.
