as this guy said its just not practical, you also have other problems such as how VR is a massive b***h to wear for long periods of time, the massive risk of running into something, and way way to few worthwhile games for it, it honestly needs another decade or two before it actually becomes mainstream

That and I'd say exclusivity deals kneecapping a growing market. There is no real reason why 80% of VR games should be exclusive to Facebook's platform.

The sooner you have a common and open standard the better, but VR instantly devolved into walled garden attempts before the technology even established itself.

        >exclusivity deals kneecapping a growing market
this didn't just fracture the market and piss early adopters off, it also encouraged all VR games to be low quality mobile games. Just compare the quality of games pre and post Quest, it's like day and night. Such a tragedy what happened to VR

      This, but also:
I'm extremely resistant to most forms of screen-related queasiness but VR hurts my eyes and makes me feel dizzy after not extremely long. I know I'm not alone in this. Even if it's more subtle in a lot of people than in me, they stop using it after a while perhaps subconsciously. VR as it currently exists is mechanically unpleasant to use.

The price could be free and people would still abandon it. It's 100% a content issue. Also a hardware issue (there STILL isn't a screen that looks good) but the content issue has more effect.

They have 18-20 hours, still significantly longer than most laptops while outperforming them as well. All because Apple stopped sucking Intel's dick and made their own CPUs.
You also didn't mention how Apple still uses 16:10 and gives you microLED in 2024.

What? They are slightly ahead (1-2 years) because Apple is the only company that can afford the latest nodes from TSMC.
Once the rest of the world can afford those same nodes, they catch up to or even beat Apple. But at that point Apple switched to a newer and more expensive node, and the cycle repeats.

          >According to the chart & statistics, there's so much potential to make huge money from this untapped market

VR got absorbed by Facebook who immediately soured the air of cooperation by poaching frickers left and right and using that knowledge to bolster their headset.
Then Facebook was used as a vector for stock market frickers to get hyped about being the next app store and it was all downhill from there.
With software being so invested in proprietary, closed source walled gardens we are essentially moving at the speed of hardware development, which is fricking glacial.
Open source software development isn't really doing too much better, with standalone headsets hoovering up most of the interest in getting an open source PCVR ecosystem functional.

      >Apple VR
Apple VR was always a consoomer-Black-archetype marketing tool. They just needed to sell the image of the black consoomer buying expensive tech products, the device itself was ancillary and anyone who bought it was a side-benefit.

High cost of entry which results in a smaller base of potential customers meaning fewer games being developed for it. Not to mention adult PCVR users are probably higher on the tech literacy spectrum than most which means a higher percentage of that smaller user base will pirate stuff making it even less worth developing for VR as opposed to making a flat game anyone can play.
The near to medium future for VR gaming is flat-to-VR mods like UEVR or official VR modes for flat games like what flat2VR is being commissioned for now.
Motion controls are a gimmick, even in VR. It's fun, it's immersive, it's a pain in the ass to set up, requires more space than most people have, and is a bit tiring for longer sessions. No one's standing up for a full skyrimVR playthrough without once deciding to just play seated with their height level modified in-software

3DS still had a sweetspot for the 3D to work right and adjust it with the slider. And it was hard on your eyes after a while. In VR the 3D just works but the HMD is uncomfortable after a while. Just wait until everything is injected to your optic nerve.

The problem with neutering your tech completely to make it consumer facing is nobody will bother to make anything really interesting with it.
The whole sensor ecosystem around shitty AR is crazy but real time 3d environment mapping is way more useful and interesting as a standalone thing to make hobby robots and such than as an integrated feature on a consumer product that's only a platform for a few premade products.

that's the true killer app here. racing and flying in VR is absolutely amazing
but unfortuntely, it adds even more to the price. you not only need a very beefy pc (7800x3d and 4090 is still not enough), you also need to spend even more for a simrig (like, easily $3k to do both racing and flight properly)

anon, i have a triple 32/1440p setup on my rig and a pimax crystal (formerly a g2 reverb). i never use the triples. the headset is much better for racing. granted, if i had to do an 8 hour endurance race or something, i'd think about switching to the triples. but for any reasonable length of time, i'll stick with the headset, thank you very much. the immersion is amazing, the graphics are GudEnuf™ nowadays, and depth perception is pretty great for racing.
if you doubt my word, by all means, mosey on over to r/simracing and/or r/iracing and search for VR, you'll see tonnes of people sharing those opinions.

I think VR will always be a niche. At most I can see AR tech becoming more standard in some fields of work but even then it seems like it'd be more cumbersome than just a computer or a smartphone. New technology has caught on for ease of use, VR is the opposite.
Games wise, I haven't seen much to make it worthwhile. Most come across as tech demos but even something like Alyx still feels like it's so desperately trying to sell people on VR that several design decisions suffer to accommodate it.

    >Combining these two factors (the higher price point of the Quest 3 and continued strength of the Quest 2), it should come as no surprise that Meta Reality Labs just reported record-breaking quarterly revenue of $1.07 billion – a new high-water mark for the division.

Just google "how many oculus 3 sold" for proof. You don't make a billion in sales on something dying.

While I absolutely agree 100% with everyone on the limited game library, the new Unreal injector engine will save the format. And once the VR market is flooded with a ton of FREE new IP to play, VR will become more mainstream.

One thing I will say is that manufactures have GOT to figure out how to make the headsets more light and comfortable. Nothing but the displays should be on the front faceplate (see BigScreen Beyond).

      Anonymous

      >You don't make a billion in sales on something dying.
You do when you're selling something way less than the R&D costs because you want to corner the market. Like most consoles, what matters is software adoption rates, and Facebook isn't publishing those.

      >the new Unreal injector engine will save the format
Absolute delusion. There's this idea that once it's a bit "easier" then suddenly devs will spring up out of the woodwork to polish all these mods and make the games playable. They won't. A couple of big titles will get the same shitty level of VR patch they always have, and nobody with a brain will be interested to begin with because they can just play that game on a regular monitor and not have to deal with mod jank.

VR tools have been accessible for YEARS. Buddy, you can't even do basic shit anymore. Want to change the position of a controller in VR because you're holding it another way? Well, first you need OpenVR Input Emulator, which hasn't been updated in years, then you need a patch to get the offsets PARTIALLY working (some options will still crash SteamVR outright, others just don't work at all), and then you have to apply the profile every time you start the program. Why is this such a hassle? Because VR is dead, and nobody cares about it.

there are a lot of premade scenes for just about every scenario you'd want. it can be very difficult if you want to make your custom characters due to the amount of morphs and textures available but if you want character models ripped straight from the game they're from you're golden. the UI looks daunting but it's not that hard once you figure out the basics/important ones.

there's really not much to import or do in 95% of cases unless you're making your own scene. you only really have to setup the session plugins/ plugins of your choice once or twice. after that loading the scene is pretty straight forward as is loading a character for the scene

Idiotic concentration on "VR experiences" instead of trying to have games with decently functional VR modes on top of the regular, flat display.

My most played VR games are Subnautica, Doom 3, Microsoft Flight Simulator and Elite: Dangerous, all regular games with well functioning VR implementation on top of it. (excluding Elite, which worked OK until the devs decided shooting themselves in the foot was for schoolgirls and shot itself in the head instead.)

I didn't get VR to play two-bit carnival games, I did it to get more out of games in general and that's what they are stubbornly refusing to give to the audience.

      >all I ever wanted from VR was just an alternative to your monitor,
Resolutions are nowhere near high enough for this. Can you not do basic math? To match a couple of 1080p screens at desktop distance, you would need 8k per eye, or roughly 16k throughput resolution. 8k is a fantasy for the next 5-10 years, 4k is barely achievable right now, and you want 16k? Bear in mind each step up requires 4x the performance, so 4k is 4x more demanding than 1080p, and 16k is SIXTY FOUR times more demanding than 1080p.

All they could sell people on is wagglan gimmicks. Screen resolutions just aren't there.

    >Why did VR die?
I'd like to bash your heads in, Black person homosexuals. I've been saying that VR is a dead technology since about 2016, when it became pretty obvious (to me, but not to you homosexuals) that the technology was TOO expensive and there will be NO games for it.
I fricking struggled to convey this simple thought to homosexual Black folk like you, but you were always stupid and kept repeating NOOO YOU JUST WAIT NOOO DUDE THERE WILL BE COOL GAMES AND IT WILL BE MASS PRODUCED AND CHEAP

WHERE ARE YOUR CHEAP VR SETS AND GOOD GAMES YOU wienerSUCKING Black person homosexualS? HUH?
WHERE IS YOUR RISE OF VR TECHNOLOGY? IT'S BEEN 10 YEARS, Black folk, HELLO?

You are a LYING dishonest wienersucking Black person. Who the frick wants to buy literal Black person toys of SHIT quality that are VR sets that cost so little? The real VR sets cost around $1000 like Valve Index and I personally don't even consider Black person toys that cost less because they are SHIT.
When I built my $3000 PC, I knew it would be good for A LOT of applications. And what is a $1000 VR set good for? Two fricking games? I just bought a $350 knife in CS2 and it's a much better fricking investment than a fricking useless VR set. Frick off, Black person

It's not dead, it's just not that popular yet. It's a new technology that's still far from being perfected. Apple put waaaaay too much money on this, as if whoever signed off on the decision wasn't made aware of exactly how niche the VR market actually is at the moment. also I am beyond tired of EVERY streamer who does dark souls ring borne content in blade and sorcery admitting "i've never played these games before lol" so you're telling me not one of the 12 million+ people who played at least elden ring out of the souls series have a fricking vr headset?
whats the point of porting basically the whole of dark souls 1 into the game if no one is going to flesh it out because the communities don't overlap?? whats the fricking point of any of this I guess is my point. this isn't for gamers its for facebook trying to make more money.

The only people playing VR are under 18yo kids on the quest. Out of the dozen friend I have who were raised on PC gaming and are all over 30, none of them got headsets except me.
Mainly because it was considered risky to invest 1k$ into something you didn't know if you'd like.
It's niche and it won't get anywhere until those kids raised up on VR start doing game dev, which could take 5 to 10 years.

VR's fine, you just have to realize that there's two factions:
      1. The Quest 2/3 crowd, who are fine with decent VR experiences, and are okay with "the basics." Also only paying $200-500 at the most.
      2. The HOLY SHIT crowd with fancy-ass headsets that need 4x 6090 Gold Edition GPUs to run and you also have a haptic suit, FBT with like 20 cameras, a whole-ass room to move around in, etc.

I'm in the first group. We don't have air conditioning, so I don't play as much as I want, but I do like it.
I don't play any social games though, other than spending a day dicking around in Resonite trying to get shit to work and enjoy walking around dead worlds while some 20k hour guy rants about how the game's actually super-duper alive.

    VR is silly.
It happens from time to time, sophisticated technologies that seem to have infinite potential, but in the end it's something silly that can't hold people's attention for long.
I honestly don't know how the entertainment industry doesn't realize this.
You only have to do a few tests to realize that VR doesn't have the capacity to hold most users' attention. My brother is all about this shit, I've seen about 10 people test his equipment and of those 10, 0 felt any desire to return. It's always the same reaction, at first you're amazed and think it's going to revolutionize everything, but after a few minutes you're a bit bored, you put it away and never go back.
