Because it's made by enthusiasts, for enthusiasts.
It hasn't "failed" in doing what it set out to do. At all. It works. Really well, in fact.

Also Meta is a pathetically tragic misstep by a megalomaniac who can't be told "no", no matter how shit his ideas are.

That would have been true five, or even a couple of years ago. But nowadays Meta Quest 2/3 are excellent products, probably a big step forward for VR in general and not just standalone.
-Completely wireless even when streaming from PC
      - Above average optics
      - Very affordable compared to the competition and you can buy third party accessories of all kinds
-Great software/OS (Having used an Index for years, it's actually better for flying and driving simulators than SteamVR just by itself)
      - An incredible quantity of new releases that they practically give away for free, thanks to the most generous referral program in te history of gaming.

For me, it's the lack of quality, non-gimmicky games. VR devs are simply subpar compared to normal game devs and rely on gimmicks instead of Just Making Good Game. Exceptions apply of course.

Same reason it failed in the 90s

    It's too fricking expensive:
In hardware (you need a new PC to use it, and the headsets aren't cheap either)
In square footage (you need an empty room to use it)
In development (it takes more money to make a game that only a fraction of the market can play)

      >No open source tracking software that's particularly usable
      >Controllers are almost always paired to the headset and the controllers are usually designed by committee, which means we were initially stuck with pseudo-wiimotes (people can call them wands all they want, that's where the form factor came from) and are now stuck with Oculus controllers.
      >Larger players like Faceberg have settled into planned obsolescence cycles where they barely improve their headsets and purposefully hold things back
These have slowed forward progress to a crawl.

      >hardware
You need a PC from the past 8ish years, headsets can be standalone for 300-500$ as well
      >Room
      Smallish studio apartment seems fine
      >development
Nothing worthwhile is getting developed for any device anymore anyway, there's a reason 9th gen consoles were basically just scalperbait

Without being able to actually move around in the virtual space and potentially even feel the things you are interacting with then it's a gimmick that amounts to little more than having a tv right in front of your face. Games are still more comfortable when played on a regular screen. VR will continue to be a fun little thing to experience every now and then but until it can get closer to an actual virtual reality that you can interact with then it'll never beat regular games for most people.

      >feel things you are interacting with
Construct some force feedback gloves for 50$.

too expensive and gimmicky. For VR to really work it needs to be
      >available to the masses
      >fulfill a popular demand that cant be met by other means
Right now it's still just a TV strapped to your face

      >available to the masses

        >Smallish studio apartment seems fine
sure if you just moved in and its empty, I have a dedicated gaming/home theater room and its full of expensive gaming monitors and tv, punching a hole in said electronics would not be a thing I would want to do...

the dining room is full with dining room type of furniture, and the bedroom.. well there is a bed in it... so yea how are you gonna play VR in a "STUDIO"?? which should have all of those things in a single room?

or you could just play it sitting down.

Seated VR works and most of my furniture can be folded and stowed or is up against the wall by default.

          >Smallish studio apartment seems fine
Except that studio apartment can't have anything else in it

I just have a 2.5m*2.5m blank space where I usually unfold a mattress or a solid table or whatever that packs away flat when it isn't needed.

Right and how many "small studio apartments" have a spot where you can stand, duck, and rotate 360 degrees arms fully extended without touching anything? Ideally you want a little more than a full arms length to accommodate for any leaning or slight shifts in position.

If 30m2 (lazily laser tape measuring 2 values and pretending that it's all one continuous space) is small, then mine. Smallish I guess, but my interior decoration is pretty stupid.

          >You need a PC from the past 8ish years, headsets can be standalone for 300-500$ as well
You are the problem. Modern VR headsets are require 4k 90hz. You need a powerful GPU or it's going to be shit. People trying it with underpowered 8 year old GPU's and seeing it at it's worst is what's killing it.

Maybe if they get their heads out of their asses and release something that's actually as good as a 1080 without intentionally compromising to make the card worthless and not future-proof.

They do it on purpose. VR defenders want to have their cake and eat it when it comes to appraising VR in these threads.
          >No you're wrong, VR isn't low-res low-FOV dogshit!
*points to a $2,000 Pimax Crystal*
          >You're also wrong about the cost! You can use it for $300!
          *points to a low-res, low-FOV dogshit Quest 2*

It's completely dishonest to represent VR in this way. There are several posts in all of the threads here doing this, pointing to the cheapness of one set and the quality of another as if they're talking about the same thing.

Back in 2014 Valve was working with Oculus, HTC, and microsoft to develop hardware and software to make VR work. Open cooperation for the betterment of the medium benefited everyone. When facebook bought oculus they not only forbade cooperation but over the years they also started scalping talent from other companies by offering absurd salaries then they had those people work on Zuck's moronic virtual office metaverse concept instead of making games. This crippled VR's potential.

even botw in vr is more interesting than 99% of vr games, nintendo is just more appealing

it is inevitable that nintendo does this when the tech is ready and affordable for mass market

      it's good
it's just like a regular flat game, but obviously, made for VR, so all the setpieces and settings are really big and impressive.
gameplay is okay, puzzles are neat if a little easy, but also not long enough to become annoying.
it's like ocarina of time-skyrim with generic egyptian mythology/norse mythos stuff going on.

That's because companies are not putting their resources in making current tech able to compute split-screen (which would require more console power) and putting those resources in dumb shit like VR instead because surprise, surprise, they want games to be more isolating to generate the most system sales/online transactions

Part of the reason is because Valve does things in the right direction but it does them half assedly. If they found a way to make the Valve Index to be mass produced at reasonable prices and used by most people like the Meta Quest, then there would be a bigger market for games. The other reason is that the actual successful VR market (under Meta) is accomplished by a moronic megalomaniac who's only concern isn't gaming but the furthering of his ~~*handlers*~~

recently rebought a PSVR1 again and am enjoying it. now that a ton of VR games go on sale for 75% off it's great to pick up games I normally wouldn't have paid attention to and have some fun. Some of the best games don't even use the motion controllers. For instance Star Wars Squadrons can be played in VR and it's actually best to sit in a chair since you're in a wienerpit anyway. Game was on sale for like $1.99 too so it's a great time.

you can't feel the things there, is like watching a movie without sound, but maybe in 10 years when you can actually feel the things that you see it'll be a success, but not yet

Because you touch yourself at night to VR porn, which is what ruined the tech, because its only lasting value is for porn

You need to be both rich and easy prey for tech gimmicks in order to get into VR
