The decision to make her a bounty hunter came from a misunderstanding of American Westerns. The devs wanted to convey that Samus would travel from place to place solving problems, kind of like the lone gunslinger who rides into town and help the locals. It just so happens that it was also a relatively common trope for the main characters of Westerns to be bounty hunters, swept into the main conflict by their search for a bounty. So they made Samus a bounty hunter, not really understanding what it entailed

Everything about this whole 'localizers ruining japanese media' arc has been bizarre to me. How is this even happening? I have recently became aware that many of my favorite video games in the past have had their stories and characters malformed via a single individual in the pipeline. Characters I've hated are actually completely different entities in their original Japanese version. I've seen messages of localizers even considering changing the damn game just for inserting new lines.
Can we as a collective get together and try to create a blacklist pastebin to mark down which J->E localizers need to be avoided at all costs? And possibly extend it to anime subs/dubs, manga, and visual novels. I have a feeling this localizer issue is going to last for a while.
Regarding using AI, I think everyone here recognizes that translations via LLMs aren't perfect; however, they are vastly better than anything we have currently. Even just using ChatGPT (which is configured VERY poorly and hallucinates information VERY often) instead of the paid APIs, has proven vastly superior to Google Translate and DeepL. I wouldn't even mind hosting a proxy myself for people to access GPT just for translating games and anime for a moment. But it isn't like we can just dump into the source code for every game and every anime and every manga and quickly apply a batch translation onto them.

Japanese can be an extremely difficult language to learn for most English speakers, because it can convey information in entirely new and unfamiliar ways which do not exist in English. There are certain sentences which make sense in Japanese that consist of 5 - 7 words, which would need over 12 words in English (not counting articles) to convey the same message. Japanese uses particles, English doesn't; Japanese agglutinates its verbs, English doesn't; etc.
The kind of person who goes out of their way to learn Japanese realistically has some kind of fixation (potentially autistic) on Japan or the language itself. This kind of person is the perfect breeding ground for egotistical behavior, and if you give them a skill (like being capable of translating Japanese) which many of their peers lack, they can be susceptible to power-tripping. If you add into this the modern Internet zeitgeist of hyper-reactionary puritanism where something must be 100% 'pure' or else it's part of 'the enemy' (this goes for BOTH sides), then these egomaniacal localizers can outright change the original writing with extreme prejudice under the excuse of 'doing a moral good'.
Admittedly, some of the mistakes can stem from subtle cultural nuances with Japanese and an inability to translate them into English without sounding awkward or broken (e.g., first-person pronouns and their relation to politeness or femininity/masculinity, or even certain verb tenses once you have 4+ different forms on a single verb ending).
It gets posted a lot in these threads too, but there's a relatively popular screencap of an anon explaining that the actual good translators end up getting sweeped into translation legislation, mercantile documents, etc., so in the gaming industry, we're left with the worst of the worst (outside of unpaid volunteer workers).
Ultimately, your only concern should be whether or not we're getting the 'real' message that the author wrote.

The core of the issue is that most localizers from Japanese are moronic and have zero formal training. They don't even try to pretend like they have formal training. It's a nepo hellscape where weirdoes on discord always get the job.
Used to be the non-English localization scenes were slightly better but even they've started going to shit in recent years.
Changes based on politics/culture aren't even a new thing, they've been doing this forever. There was a point where localizers had female enemies replaced with male enemies because violence against women was taboo (Final Fight). Now they want the opposite, they want more female enemies in games. Russian characters were replaced with western ones because of the red scare (S.C.A.T.). They've been censoring religious references since forever because Christians used to have a real grip on society (Zelda), now you can do whatever you want with Christian imagery but not so much with imagery from some other religions (TLOU2).
Point is culture changes but game censorship remains because apparently it's at the heart of what localization does.

And this is exactly what it does. It produces new works, vaguely based on the originals, for a different market. Lots of things are changed due to "cultural differences", the whims of the editors, whatever. What YOU want is the original work, which is something a translation will never provide, being a mass market product that will naturally strip out awkward sounding phrasing.

Videogame translations have always been garbage. Ted Woolsey completed butchered Final Fantasy 6, Dragon Quest games are all fricked, almost any translated game you find will have a fricked up translation.

If you just copy those words over into an English translation, you completely lose the detail and intent that they were in a different fricking language from the rest of the text. Japanese fiction often does this for a sense of exoticism and unfamiliarity. Sometimes the English terms will be awkwardly used or mean something completely different to English speakers.

You think these works didn't have changes? All TV and movie products are heavily rewritten for ease, there just aren't a lot of asiatics out there who care enough to whine about changes because nobody is going to waste their time learning asiatic.

I don't watch asiaticshit, so I wouldn't know. But character names are very rarely changed in anything not aimed at 5 year olds, I imagine there are plenty of idioms and things that are swapped out for similar equivalents so the show doesn't need a TL note every other line. All subtitled media is like this, because speed is of the essence.

There was actually a big controversy over Netflix's Squid Game subtitles being inaccurate. And, wouldn't you know it, even normalgays got angry about it because Koreaboos didn't try to frame it as some sort of troony agenda.

Video games probably have it the roughest since where would you put something like a TL notes section? An extra PDF bundled with the game? Anime can just have an alternate sub track and manga/novels can have an end of book glossary.
