I think about this while playing Animal Crossing too, do localizers get paid by the localization?
What's his name in English?
>Walker
>Same as english
>What's his name in english
sorry I was too lazy to edit the english name into the screencap but I figured the dutch could do some heavy lifting for me.
This one annoys me because its such a layup and it gets changed for no reason.
Noisette sounds cool actually.
localizers get paid per word in the original language. there is no metric that can tell whether you translated Ben as Ben or Walker. you type that in a different language, that's all.
t. /agdg/
why is translating names even a thing unless it's a straight up insult?
yes, the more changes the more they get paid.
never look up xenoblade 1.
how different is the story in japanese?
in japanese the game has a shitload of english
all of it was changed, even the most minor of area names
>never look up xenoblade 1.
More people should look into Xenoblade 1
NoE localized the game already into like 5 languages including english and some moronic Treehouse/NoA localizer had a meltdown saying the game was too big
(NoA doesn't like to work on anything that isn't Mario or Zelda)
Don't forget Soul Sacrifice where every single name is an Arthurian reference and this matters for the western fantasy plot but LOL LOCALIZATION
Even still it's one of the best videogame settings and its writing is still top notch but it falls short of what it should have been.
>guaranteed replies
Mother does this a lot. Every town is named in English and most of them are renamed for some reason. Halloween is Spookane and Easter Town is Young Town. Because a town named Halloween would be extremely confusing for a feeble American brain I guess
>Halloween is Spookane
I normally hate localizers changing shit for no reason, but I actually like the shithole city being a pun on Spokane Washington. Feels fitting for a game that parodies Americana.
Nintendo of America banned even innocuous references to religious shit back in the 90s. In the English version of Earthbound, even the red crosses on top of hospitals are removed.
>party members can enter an enhanced state referred to as Genocide Mode/ジェノサイドモード
>localisation renames it Massacre Mode, along with changing the “Geno” part of associated skills to “Mass”
I get it, genocide is a “loaded term”. Don’t care, it’s still a silly change and I think it’s funny someone was concerned enough to think it needed to be
Genocide has a history of being used in Japanese media as "killer" or "dangerous" because it's a cool English word they don't really know the meaning of. Sonic was going to have a zone called Genocide City until someone in the US branch shut that shit down. I almost never say this but that's actually an understandable change.
>Genocide City
I don't think Sonic would fit in to Chicago anyways.
>Sonic was going to have a zone called Genocide City until someone in the US branch shut that shit down
They just can’t help themselves, can they?
in sonic's case it's debatable, not in some edgy obscure anime that's entire purpose is litteraly being edgy
Point is, that's actually a case where I get it. Genocide in English means the systemic killing of one type of person/thing where in Japan it's just a cool way to signal murderous intent or danger. Massacre seems more apt if you're an English speaker. Localization does have its place and I think this may be a situation where I get it.
>SOME of them change them to include friends and family and the like
Bad. Inexcusable.
>The song
You cannot copyright such a broad concept as Country Road. That's beyond moronic.
>You cannot copyright such a broad concept as Country Road. That's beyond moronic.
If it's a famous enough concept they might want to avoid it. I can't think of any other reason they'd change it.
Also, when localizer and translator are two different jobs, the localizer needs to make changes to justify their position.
>the localizer needs to make changes to justify their position.
Genuinely eye opening statement there.
Genocide is still appropriate because they want to wipe the Marchens/Nightmares
>I almost never say this but that's actually an understandable change.
Man, Americans really are giant fricking pussies.
Counterpoint: Genocide sounds cooler than massacre.
I think that's the point of the localization because massacre sounds cooler than genocide
>massacre sounds cooler than genocide
I wonder who could be behind this post…
Just try saying it.
Genocide sounds so slow and soft
Massacre, it already sounds like you're angry just by saying it normally
You and him are the worst kind of person to talk about this shit with. It is not about being cooler, it is not about what you like. It's about how true it is to the author's vision.
That particular change happens to be one I can understand. Genocide is a very loaded term in the west and it doesn't convey what it means in Japan at all.
>Genocide is a very loaded term in the west and it doesn't convey what it means in Japan at all.
What? It's still very clearly killing shit.
Understandable because of the kvetching that it would cause.
Genocide is killing one kind of shit, massacres are indiscriminate.
I find it fascinating that being LESS picky about mass murder is the more socially acceptable term.
It's killing or killing + prejudice aka with the goal of wiping a certain kind of person/thing off the map. Do the math.
depends on how you feel about ontological evil.
Like Samus being a Bounty Hunter rather than a normal mercenary or freelancer because it just sounds cooler
All of those words kind of mean the same thing, especially with how little we see her do her normal job.
The decision to make her a bounty hunter came from a misunderstanding of American Westerns. The devs wanted to convey that Samus would travel from place to place solving problems, kind of like the lone gunslinger who rides into town and help the locals. It just so happens that it was also a relatively common trope for the main characters of Westerns to be bounty hunters, swept into the main conflict by their search for a bounty. So they made Samus a bounty hunter, not really understanding what it entailed
It's because they saw boba fett and thought person in space armor = bounty hunter
that's a funny one
>bounty hunter sounds so cool, badass like in those american westerns
>what do you mean bounty hunters do it for cold hard cash? ...we wanted her to be a space adventurer with a heart of gold
Which is weird because you can hear the voice actors literally say genocide in engrish.
I wonder what westerns.
Localisers assume almost everyone is a tasteless dubgay who never plays with Japanese audio and wouldn’t know about the change and almost certainly wouldn’t care if they did
Unfortunately they’re right
Anyone who thinks this change is bad is probably an anti semite.
>Anyone who thinks this change is bad is probably an anti semite
Anyone who thinks this change isn't bad is probably a semite.
I'd be fine just giving the localizer very strict guidelines and supervision from a language expert.
>ローカライザーをヤクザに通報する。
>Report the localizer to the Yakuza.
I LOL'd. Also I MTL'd that, guess that makes me as good as a localizer LOL.
SOME of them change them to include friends and family and the like. See the Yu Gi Oh egyptian god cards.
The Neko Atsume cats were named after the cats of the translator I think.
In THIS specific case I think they might have wanted to avoid a potential issue with this:
Jojo was infamous for this.
You know, this copypasta has improved my kanji in a way I haven't really worked on, which has improved my ability to read news sites when they talk about the shit in israel.
Try that and you get called a bigot. Skipping localizers and only using people FUNCTIONAL in fricking japanese is a better approach.
>Yu Gi Oh egyptian god cards
>Obelisk the tormentor
>The Winged dragon of Ra
>Some guy from our office the sky dragon
Everything about this whole 'localizers ruining japanese media' arc has been bizarre to me. How is this even happening? I have recently became aware that many of my favorite video games in the past have had their stories and characters malformed via a single individual in the pipeline. Characters I've hated are actually completely different entities in their original Japanese version. I've seen messages of localizers even considering changing the damn game just for inserting new lines.
Can we as a collective get together and try to create a blacklist pastebin to mark down which J->E localizers need to be avoided at all costs? And possibly extend it to anime subs/dubs, manga, and visual novels. I have a feeling this localizer issue is going to last for a while.
Regarding using AI, I think everyone here recognizes that translations via LLMs aren't perfect; however, they are vastly better than anything we have currently. Even just using ChatGPT (which is configured VERY poorly and hallucinates information VERY often) instead of the paid APIs, has proven vastly superior to Google Translate and DeepL. I wouldn't even mind hosting a proxy myself for people to access GPT just for translating games and anime for a moment. But it isn't like we can just dump into the source code for every game and every anime and every manga and quickly apply a batch translation onto them.
Pic related is the GPT-4 translation of . It's obviously not perfect and fills things in by itself but at least it doesn't fricking insert a trending meme into it!
It's been a thing for decades, on and off. 4kids fricking up One Piece ring a bell? Fansubs were consistenly mogging the frick out of official subs.
The bigger issues are that the newer localizers are doing an even worse job than the 4kids era, and getting involved in politics, and then going after the fanbase. There's janky like dynasty warriors 2 or 3, and then there's full on atrocities like some of the fireemblems.
>Can we as a collective get together and try to create a blacklist pastebin to mark down which J->E localizers need to be avoided at all costs? And possibly extend it to anime subs/dubs, manga, and visual novels. I have a feeling this localizer issue is going to last for a while.
Maybe a full rating system. Or maybe pushing for more mods to fix terrible translations.
Japanese can be an extremely difficult language to learn for most English speakers, because it can convey information in entirely new and unfamiliar ways which do not exist in English. There are certain sentences which make sense in Japanese that consist of 5 - 7 words, which would need over 12 words in English (not counting articles) to convey the same message. Japanese uses particles, English doesn't; Japanese agglutinates its verbs, English doesn't; etc.
The kind of person who goes out of their way to learn Japanese realistically has some kind of fixation (potentially autistic) on Japan or the language itself. This kind of person is the perfect breeding ground for egotistical behavior, and if you give them a skill (like being capable of translating Japanese) which many of their peers lack, they can be susceptible to power-tripping. If you add into this the modern Internet zeitgeist of hyper-reactionary puritanism where something must be 100% 'pure' or else it's part of 'the enemy' (this goes for BOTH sides), then these egomaniacal localizers can outright change the original writing with extreme prejudice under the excuse of 'doing a moral good'.
Admittedly, some of the mistakes can stem from subtle cultural nuances with Japanese and an inability to translate them into English without sounding awkward or broken (e.g., first-person pronouns and their relation to politeness or femininity/masculinity, or even certain verb tenses once you have 4+ different forms on a single verb ending).
It gets posted a lot in these threads too, but there's a relatively popular screencap of an anon explaining that the actual good translators end up getting sweeped into translation legislation, mercantile documents, etc., so in the gaming industry, we're left with the worst of the worst (outside of unpaid volunteer workers).
Ultimately, your only concern should be whether or not we're getting the 'real' message that the author wrote.
Ah but the problem child localizers here are NOT functional in Japanese. So, they're not even in the skilled cool kids club. They're hangers on, pretending to be writers, game makers, and japanese experts, when in fact they're hangers on..
You're fricking hardcore, but I'm not going to break the balls of everyone. I'd say, everyone worse than Blaustein. And even he needed to get kicked in the nuts by Koijima to straighten him up.
>localizers
>learning japanese
Did you forgot that most localizers don't even know japanese? They just use google translate and then just replace parts of the original script with random shit that no one wants
Yeah, this is kind of the bigger issue. Not that I don't think learning Japanese is a bad idea, but this, "you can only truly experience the brilliant literary masterpiece of Trailsslop by learning Nihongo, anon-san" is so reductionist.
The core of the issue is that most localizers from Japanese are moronic and have zero formal training. They don't even try to pretend like they have formal training. It's a nepo hellscape where weirdoes on discord always get the job.
Used to be the non-English localization scenes were slightly better but even they've started going to shit in recent years.
Changes based on politics/culture aren't even a new thing, they've been doing this forever. There was a point where localizers had female enemies replaced with male enemies because violence against women was taboo (Final Fight). Now they want the opposite, they want more female enemies in games. Russian characters were replaced with western ones because of the red scare (S.C.A.T.). They've been censoring religious references since forever because Christians used to have a real grip on society (Zelda), now you can do whatever you want with Christian imagery but not so much with imagery from some other religions (TLOU2).
Point is culture changes but game censorship remains because apparently it's at the heart of what localization does.
Localizers censoring or even changing game mechanics is just so common, it's a surprise how long it took for people to find this out. Just from what I remember:
>7th saga is bugged by localizers and is way harder as a result
>Harvest Moon DS had best friend ceremony removed
>Anything Working Designs ever touched, completely nonsensical translation and game difficulty changed
>Shadow Hearts 2 puppet costume removed
>Fortune Summoners had a hot spring CG censored
>Fatal Frame costumes removed for overseas versions
>The entirety of #FE, translation included
>Rune Factory 5 forced to add gay shit because of localizers
>which J->E localizers need to be avoided at all costs
All of them. You need to learn the language. It's hard but necessary. Every translation introduces changes, it's unavoidable. There's a built in difference between languages and the script will always be off.
it became part of the AI replacing jobs debate which gets way more attention with normalgays than any other time localization comes up and gets brushed off as "oh, just some weebshit, who cares."
>however, they are vastly better than anything we have currently.
I think the level of cope you're on is insane. I get it, you've been lied to your whole life and you've been playing garbage. But swapping out one kind of garbage for a whole different level of garbage isn't the answer. You've just asked GPT to re-translate gibberish it wrote in the first place, and it still got it wrong. It's Chinese whispers level, and you don't see it because you can't actually read the text, nor do you know how trivial simple sentences are.
The crusade you're on will only bring you misery, as the job that used to be done by mostly clueless college graduate interns is replaced by an unthinking black box of gibberish, and the editing job that fricked up the text in the first place keeps on going unchanged. You'll be reading the exact same rewrites, only now the base dialogue the rewrite is derived from is far worse and completely incapable of understanding basic contex, so the editor will have to use their best guess in every scene.
Just learn the fricking language already, moron.
No one is arguing that LLMs are superior to human translations in any way. So I assume you were trying to argue that DeepL and Google Translate provide superior/comparable translations? This argument is incorrect. A look into any recent papers evaluating benchmarks will quickly show otherwise. And I think many of us can also attest to the quality of translations for the languages we actually know compared to current NMT and encoder-decoder MT approaches. I have spoken to numerous professors and translators in the field supporting this claim that LLMs are providing << accurate translations and have proven superior compared to the previous SOTA. The sad part is that we still do not even have accurate metrics quantifying machine translation accuracy; we are still using things like BLEU. Maybe you would like to undertake your own genius study exposing these 'Chinese whispers.' I recommend you go through a quick read of 'How Good Are GPT Models at Machine Translation? A Comprehensive Evaluation (Hendy et al.)', and 'Adaptive Machine Translation with Large Language Models (Moslem et al.)' for an introduction into the topic. And I believe that 'the 'black box of gibberish' you refer to is an evolving technology that learns and adapts, making new strides monthly.
>So I assume you were trying to argue that DeepL and Google Translate provide superior/comparable translations?
No, I was arguing that all of these things produce garbage. You spout worthless papers at me when I'm talking about the content you claim to be "good".
I reject the idea that in a few more years the field will be better. I've seen absolutely ZERO evidence of this, because what makes a good translator is the ability to understand and predict context, which is something language models consistently perform incredibly poorly at. There has been no real work into fixing this glaring flaw, because it's impossible to fix with a predictive flowchart, which is what ML is. Without greater thought, it is impossible to correctly sort information. ML is an attempt to brute force thought by just throwing a ton of shit into the mix, but this approach can only ever produce P-zombies. DECENTLY accurate translations will only be possible with AGI, and ML will never result in AGI without a drastically different design template.
Katana words borrowed from English often don't have the same meaning.
Explain to me what Country Road means in English then.
Land's End
Show your work
cool lies, but it's used in Japanese country songs in the exact way you'd expect. It means the same thing in English and Japanese.
Better luck next time.
japan has country songs?
Yes. Not much, but they take it quite seriously, as they do everything.
Also related: Enka.
This bobble makes perfect sense to me. This is like 1986. NO internet. They look up the word Bounty. Treasure. Abundance!. They look up the word Hunter. Bingo!
I don't think it's the case here, but sometimes words that are "already" in english, have a completely different meaning in japanese. mansion, juice, hip, b***h, etc. https://legendsoflocalization.com/tricky-translations-3-false-friends-japanese-hips/
It is not the case here.
I mean, if the localizer just eyeballs it, and says OK without changing any words at all, then for the next project, why pay the localizer?
OMEGA RUGAL LAUGHS AT YOUR WEAKNESS.
>I mean, if the localizer just eyeballs it, and says OK without changing any words at all, then for the next project, why pay the localizer?
Because that is not going to happen. Not even in ideal circumstances.
So why aren't you learning japanese?
Waiting for the excuses btw
I am, I'm just moronic.
しかりがんばって!
頑張って!
If only my journey could be over in a 5 minute montage while male cheerleaders dance.
As crappy as duolingo is, they have a point. You need to replay those songs until you can at least A rank them.
why dont they both use kanji? is it for added emphasis?
One reason is furigana for the 生徒 seitoanon. The other is the euro themed cool rivals of the hot blooded ouendan in the game.
That's actually a legal issue with the Red Cross.
Simply a rating system so the nepo weirdos who are willing to spend time learning Japanese, and who don't frick up the script every chance they get for political or personal reasons might be sufficient. There's plenty of autismos out there who would do it for the shit pay.
Yeah, but it's getting to the point where it can't be ignored or written of as some gaikoukjin 外国人 thing. そと くに ひと
Not OP, i'm already learning chinese and korean for actual business reasons, i cba having to learn japanese on top just to enjoy my hobby because the moron that's supposed to be paid for that isn't doing his job properly
Only basic stuff right now and my kanji knowledge is mostly common ones in video games and really easy ones.
THE HELL DO YOU MEAN LEARN JAPANESE? WHAT THE ACTUAL HELL ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT.
YOUR ANSWER TO PEOPLE COMPLAINING ABOUT BAD TRANSLATIONS IS TO TELL THEM TO JUST LEARN ANOTHER LANGUAGE?
DO YOU NOT REALIZE HOW moronic THAT IS TO SAY.
OH YOU DIDN'T LIKE HOW THE MANUAL FOR THIS DEVICE WAS SO BADLY TRANSLATED THAT IT DOESN'T EVEN MAKE SENSE? JUST LEARN THE ORIGINAL LANGUAGE.
HOW DOES THAT FIX THE PROBLEM?
THE WHOLE REASON THE TRANSLATION INDUSTRY EVEN EXISTS IS TO CATER TO PEOPLE WHO DON'T UNDERSTAND THE OTHER LANGUAGE.
HOW UTTERLY moronic ARE YOU? WHAT A STUPID POST.
I HOPE YOU DIE. I HOPE ALL OF YOUR LOVED ONES DIE.I HOPE YOU SUFFER FOR ALL OF ETERNITY.
>THE WHOLE REASON THE TRANSLATION INDUSTRY EVEN EXISTS IS TO CATER TO PEOPLE WHO DON'T UNDERSTAND THE OTHER LANGUAGE.
And this is exactly what it does. It produces new works, vaguely based on the originals, for a different market. Lots of things are changed due to "cultural differences", the whims of the editors, whatever. What YOU want is the original work, which is something a translation will never provide, being a mass market product that will naturally strip out awkward sounding phrasing.
When you complain about translations, you are complaining about "Romeo and Juliet emoji edition".
Videogame translations have always been garbage. Ted Woolsey completed butchered Final Fantasy 6, Dragon Quest games are all fricked, almost any translated game you find will have a fricked up translation.
Recettear" translation" for example even had additional dialogue bubbles added to the English version so they could insert more memes, the original doesn't have any of this shit.
Any fix for Receltear by the way?
No. All of Carpe Fulgur's games are butchered, only way is to play them in Japanese.
Woolsey didn't do it maliciously, though. He was given instructions to do these as fast as possible (because they were niche games, understand) and the cartridges themselves did not have room (as in Secret of Mana). English takes up more memory than Japanese so there was literally no other option than to truncate things.
Man did Secret of Mana in 30 days in a hotel room with no context of the scenes he was doing. When you hear him speak about his old work (he got out of localization complete) he wishes he could've done better but it wasn't in the cards.
I really don't think he deserves to be put with the same group as modern day troonylators although the result was the same; bad translations.
Woolsey was absolutely malicious. You don't add fricking "filtration masks" to the game so the wind spirit can use her teleportation powers without knocking out the whole part with flatulence (instant game over) if you aren't just being a wienersucking piece of shit. A lot of these old guys are very good at talking and making excuses for themselves, but they always trip up, like when Blaustein states he invented the HALO jump, a claim even more absurd than anything Kojimbo has ever said, given he had nothing to do with MGS3.
Woolsey produced literal dogshit and rewrote games to his own style of humor. It's the exact same ego you find in your modern troonylator.
What's wrong with FF6 and DQ?
Also didn't "capitalism, ho!" become a meme because of Recettear?
it did.
sometimes localization can be okay
Frick. That.
Accurate translations is what I want. I don't care if it's funny or even more based. Translators should never editorialize.
wtf i love localizers now
>capitalism, ho!
What cutting-edge social commentary
random frog here, what's the best way to learn without boring yourself into giving up, is duolingo actually good for leaning languages outside of being a meme?
it's better than nothing but at some point you might want to just mine anki decks
Do the Japanese even know about this and do they even care? I hope they do because this shit has been going on for years and now all of a sudden it's becoming more known and mainstream; about troonylators and localizers fricking shit up.
Only very recently. Much of it was when Sony became an american company and there were fricking weird requests by the japanese perspective.
They care, but only as much as it affects japan's reputation and the japanese games.
Throwing some memes in reccetear or changing everyone's name in pokemon isn't going to bother them. But they also know with anime and being called pedophiles by ポリコリ frickers that there's some risk here.
Also, there's standards of behavior. The localizer saying I have a vegana absolutely deserves to be a meme.
They didn't at first, a recent Asmongold video brought a lot of attention to the localizing situation, to the point that the Japs are now having discussions about it.
They used to not care. Then Asmongold talked about it and clips him reacting to Kobayashi talking about the patriarchy started spreading on the Japanese web.
To them, it's sort of entered the realm of national slander.
political correctness has always been talked about in parts of the japanese internet community this is just the next trendy thing that got boosted from asmongold
Long overdue. No matter how insular some old jap in a suit might be, I doubt they'd appreciate being misrepresented and maligned by literal foreign trannies.
Why would they care? They can read
If you just copy those words over into an English translation, you completely lose the detail and intent that they were in a different fricking language from the rest of the text. Japanese fiction often does this for a sense of exoticism and unfamiliarity. Sometimes the English terms will be awkwardly used or mean something completely different to English speakers.
Explain to me how Country Road would not convey the area properly in English. Land's End definitely doesn't, it's definitely not the last area on land.
the power of lawyers, too strong.
KANTORI RODO
TAEKUMI HOMO
>no kantori rodo foru orudo mano
any of you have the screenshots from where some moron localizer added a bunch of old memes?
there was shit like "what are thoooose?!" added in
tekku me homu
to da puresu I berong
west biruginia, yama mama
tekku me homu, kantori rodo
Lucky Star on anime piracy sites have the troony-made subtitles from 'Moe' and 'Tsundere'.
It's almsot fanfiction.
Even the internet to Japan goes through USA, taking the 30 hours route instead of 15 hours.
Normally we shouldn't need the troony USA to first troonylize thing from Japanese to Californian and then translate that dogshit into German and other languages.
Because Country Road is a stupid song the Japanese are obsessed with for some reason.
>character named harold
>has a big H belt buckle
>rename him to arthur for some reason
total troonyslator death
Land's End is a pretty acceptable change though. Yeah, you lose the pun, but this pun kinda sucked and had little bearing with much of anything?
By that token, all the Psychopath enemy entries would be problematic, since most were updated for English due to them otherwise being loaded with 90s Japanese pop culture jokes.
That, and Land's End always sounded more interesting, since you don't know how to proceed until the end of Bean Valley
Please see
Swapping out 90's Japanese references is one thing if you're making equivalent references, I don't 100% agree with it but I get it. I don't get changing things already in English.
We got Korean TV and movies like Squid Game and Parasite and they didn't get editorialized. They're commercial as frick.
>We got Korean TV and movies like Squid Game and Parasite and they didn't get editorialized.
You think these works didn't have changes? All TV and movie products are heavily rewritten for ease, there just aren't a lot of asiatics out there who care enough to whine about changes because nobody is going to waste their time learning asiatic.
What edit was made? Was a single name changed?
I don't watch asiaticshit, so I wouldn't know. But character names are very rarely changed in anything not aimed at 5 year olds, I imagine there are plenty of idioms and things that are swapped out for similar equivalents so the show doesn't need a TL note every other line. All subtitled media is like this, because speed is of the essence.
>We got Korean TV and movies like Squid Game and Parasite and they didn't get editorialized. They're commercial as frick.
There was actually a big controversy over Netflix's Squid Game subtitles being inaccurate. And, wouldn't you know it, even normalgays got angry about it because Koreaboos didn't try to frame it as some sort of troony agenda.
Neither am I. I can't control others.
Country Road, yes.
So, honest question here. Was the whole landmass called Country Roads, or the specific area? The English version has both as Land's End.
Video games probably have it the roughest since where would you put something like a TL notes section? An extra PDF bundled with the game? Anime can just have an alternate sub track and manga/novels can have an end of book glossary.
We’re gonna need to learn japanese in order to get away from these viruses in human form
