games aren't being made by individual guys in a downtown office who enjoyed making them, ordering pizza, working late nights for fun, and making games they also want to have fun playing

they are made by teams of university-graduate morons that would rather spend the entire day posting on twitter, who hate their own customers and don't even play videogames, led and funded by beancounters and shareholders who have no idea why people even play games, and working off data provided by data "scientists" who've distilled the most lucrative videogame format down to a skinnerbox with no reward mechanism

    >easily mass producible 3d realism slop
realism is the death of art. look at paintings. those Black folk had to go back to blurry shit like impressionism and cubism to make it look good.

Realism isn't the death of art, it's just another aspect of what art can be

The depictions of greek gods represents them with realistic bodies but the detail and working of stone into these forms is remarkable. More recent artists have done even better than those thousands of years ago in creating realistic statues.

What you're actually doing is just parroting what you heard someone else say without seriously considering whether they might be full of shit

Impressionism and cubism look like fricking garbage, and modern art is literally against beauty ideologically. Hyperrealism is among the best art made today.

The death of art is rebelling against nature's perfection.

subjective, not an actual critic. I love impressionism and hate cubism
        >nature's perfection
nature only seems perfect because you're looking at it from a chimp's point of view. Once you ascend to the level of humanity you realize that is not the case.
The sun is actively trying to kill you.
        What is the appendix for?
Why do you snip off your foreskin if it's perfect?

Technological limitations meant than designers had to use creativity. That's why they are soulful. In fighting games, because of lack of buttons on old controllers, they had to come up with complex button inputs to pull of simple combo moves. Chip-tune music was veery limited yet they made the most out of it.

They cost 5x as much to make but sell for the same. So they need mass market appeal to break even. As a result they are a bigger investment and so, the people making them are less willing to take risks on anything that isn't a proven success.

    Lots of reasons
Companies like EA becoming corporate behemoths gutting talented studios and forcing deadlines, unwilling to take risks.
Video games were more of a niche hobby for nerds and children back then so no need to go after the normie mainstream audience.
Although great the GTA PS2 games brought that new mainstream audience and established a generic formula for open world sandbox games.
Developers could take more risks because the development cycle was shorter and AAA games didn't have $100m+ budgets.
Developers were white Male nerds working in small teams where they could conceive an idea and implement it without it going through some corporate process.
No trannies or women or diversity hires more interested in pushing their gay political agenda in everything than making great vidya games.
If you didn't notice western society is in a terminal state of creative, moral, social, intellectual and spiritual decline. If you're a zoomer you really can't conceive how different things were pre 9/11. We were a optimistic free society looking forward to a bright future in the new millennium and technology was going to revolutionize and change our lives for the better, in such an environment people were trying to push the boundaries a lot more.

the bloat in graphics brought a massive increase in development costs, particularly for AAA productions. this pushed developers to follow standardized templates that have been proven successful. just see how many TPS have a control scheme similar to Uncharted 1, which came out 16 years ago. before the seventh generation there was more room to experiment because making games simply wasn't as expensive. the seventh was the transitional phase, but by the eighth the issue got gangrenous
