I'm sure they'll show what he does in at least one episode this season. This episode was basically made to show why Alan doesn't usually do much of the actual work. There are clearly a lot of smaller less human relatable Critters in the world of Smiling Friends, my best guess is that he's there to translate or something to that effect. Inevitably, this will be proven wrong and it will be hilarious, but for now that's what comes to mind.
Love the little detail of their stare-down beforehand, James initiates with a cold, vindictive stare, trying to intimidate, and Glep reciprocates by staring back unfazed. Locking eyes for a couple of seconds before James relinquishes and looks elsewhere, Glep is such a fricking alpha.
Pim is the one who makes people smile through optimism and good spirits. Charlie makes people smile through finding rational things to find joy in. Glep makes people smile by being a silly little creature. Alan just collects a paycheck

I mean really it's probably just meant to be an amalgamation of general western game industry trends slapped onto a strawman company. You could maybe claim it's meant to be Naughty Dog or Insomniac given their histories, but it's not meant to be one specific company.
It's supposed to be most of them. The point is that the company used to live up to its name. Now it doesn't. EA used to be Electronic Arts, and the insert that came with a lot of their earliest games was a Mission Statement which declared in no uncertain terms that they considered what they were publishing was genuine art worthy of respect. It's Naughty Dog, It's Sucker Punch, It's Insomniac, and it's Rare. They all created works which stood on their own and embodied the optimistic, the honest, the stylish and whimsical all for their own sake. Then, the culture shifted with the 2008 financial crisis, where serious, creator driven art of a positive or optimistic tone, across all media disappeared, basically overnight. To endorse an optimistic outlook became a sign of weakness or complicity in a fundamentally broken world. That all beliefs which were not in some capacity nihilistic or depressive are inherently immature.
Gwimbly is another extension on the themes that Smiling Friends has had the whole time. That a positive outlook and choosing to take things lightly sometimes is just better in general and that it's hurting all of us to act as though we all need to be activists for some cause or another.

Gwimbly would be funny but it'd be a really hard sell to the execs. I still feel like, if we actually see a Smiling Friends rep which I don't think is likely, even with its success I can't see it getting repped before ATHF, and Venture Bros is also likely ahead of it in priority so far as AS shows go, it'll probably be Charlie.
Gwimby still has it in the "original" rendering, and assuming he's around the same age as Mr. Millipede, that would make him around 27 when the game released in 1998. Barring a terribly abused childhood, I don't think it's reasonable for a 27 year old to be blown out comically badly like that, even assuming an extremely high frequency of conduct and conditions which would cause such a thing. I've seen stuff like that, and, sure they can end up pretty fricked up, but the expression of a segment of intestine like doesn't happen until later.

But people are just unwilling to put two and two together that old games haven't suddenly become less fun.
Despite major platforms trying to make it as inconvenient (but still technically possible so people don't turn to piracy) as possible to play said old games.

For me it's the difference in concepts and freedom of execution older games bring to the table. Even a PS1 game like Chase The Express has multiple routes and the endings tie into your actions during the story, whereas no AAA action game will be that experimental. Or the fun first person platforming of Jumping Flash - the only games like it are simply hack indie clones and I've never liked any of those imitators. Similarly, there's no modern Shepherd's Crossing or a JRPG with interesting systems like Dragon's Quarter, all they have these days is bloat (and as anyone that's played DQ will tell you, that game's systems have zero bloat)

I'm sure they'll show what he does in at least one episode this season. This episode was basically made to show why Alan doesn't usually do much of the actual work. There are clearly a lot of smaller less human relatable Critters in the world of Smiling Friends, my best guess is that he's there to translate or something to that effect. Inevitably, this will be proven wrong and it will be hilarious, but for now that's what comes to mind.

It's Naughty Dog, It's Sucker Punch, It's Insomniac, and it's Rare. They all created works which stood on their own and embodied the optimistic, the honest, the stylish and whimsical all for their own sake. Then, the culture shifted with the 2008 financial crisis, where serious, creator driven art of a positive or optimistic tone, across all media disappeared, basically overnight. To endorse an optimistic outlook became a sign of weakness or complicity in a fundamentally broken world. That all beliefs which were not in some capacity nihilistic or depressive are inherently immature.
Gwimbly is another extension on the themes that Smiling Friends has had the whole time. That a positive outlook and choosing to take things lightly sometimes is just better in general and that it's hurting all of us to act as though we all need to be activists for some cause or another.

Ambiguity, being open to interpretation, is the mark of a truly genius character design.
Gwimby still has it in the "original" rendering, and assuming he's around the same age as Mr. Millipede, that would make him around 27 when the game released in 1998. Barring a terribly abused childhood, I don't think it's reasonable for a 27 year old to be blown out comically badly like that, even assuming an extremely high frequency of conduct and conditions which would cause such a thing. I've seen stuff like that, and, sure they can end up pretty fricked up, but the expression of a segment of intestine like doesn't happen until later.

I wouldn't call it a "big improvement" at all, honestly. It just finally ticks this nagging checkbox in the back of my brain for this character who sat out every major event in the first season. I can't even say I'd really change any season 1 episode, because it was all great. I just don't think Alan was used to his potential.

For me it's the difference in concepts and freedom of execution older games bring to the table. Even a PS1 game like Chase The Express has multiple routes and the endings tie into your actions during the story, whereas no AAA action game will be that experimental. Or the fun first person platforming of Jumping Flash - the only games like it are simply hack indie clones and I've never liked any of those imitators. Similarly, there's no modern Shepherd's Crossing or a JRPG with interesting systems like Dragon's Quarter, all they have these days is bloat (and as anyone that's played DQ will tell you, that game's systems have zero bloat)
