Saving up for an oled $100 a paycheck. My mid tier LCD has gotten more use in the past year than almost any other device I have, including phone and tablet.
The oled seems like it's just a better model. Plan on keeping the LCD and just keep it permanently docked or as a backup.

The colours are more accurate and getting real black is nice when I'm lying in bed in my dark room, but I wouldn't say the screen is transformative
Surprisingly, the most noticeable changes are the ergonomics
The reduced weight is a lot more noticeable than I thought it was going to be, and the new thumbsticks are significantly more usable (though you can fix that with thumbstick caps on the LCD model)
The increased battery life is also really nice if you're using it away from a wall socket, but I know that's not everyone's use case
I felt it was 100% worth the purchase for me (I also use the LCD model at work as a laptop/tablet, though), but I don't think you need to upgrade to an OLED if you don't have the disposable income
I see, I'll probably hold off until Deck 2 or a price drop then. There have been a few times where I wished the LCD was more vibrant/brighter but I usually play indoors so it's not a major issue. Thanks anon.
really been enjoying it a lot. found it pretty comfortable even for extended periods of time, runs everything i need it to excellently (for my standards anyway) and has just been generally a purchase that's well worth it personally for my use case.
really happy that i got it, especially since i'll be going on a 2 week cruise in september
How is it any different than people on their phone, tablet, or laptop in public?
they look like homosexuals too
What does public mean to you? Their office, a friends house? Public handheld use doesn't usually happen in restaurants, parks and busses if that is what you mean.
Besides that, a lot of people just find the experience of playing on a handheld superior to playing on a TV or Monitor period. The day I got a Switch Lite Steam use died for me, getting a Deck brought me back to it.
>a lot of people just find the experience of playing on a handheld superior to playing on a TV or Monitor period.
what people? holding giant handheld for extended periods of time isn't enjoyable
>they look like homosexuals too
And what exactly should people be doing in public, Anon? According to you?

Because who the frick places buttons like that
They're pactically hanging off the goddamn corner of the frame
I don't want to have to choke up on your fricking console until I'm barely holding it just because ergonomic design is your passion and you want your big ass laptop trackpads to take up all of the reasonable real estate
>Because who the frick places buttons like that >They're pactically hanging off the goddamn corner of the frame
Anon, have you actually held the device?
It's completely comfortable and ergonomic
It's designed that way for a reason
As someone who doesn't like the large size, doesn't use the trackpads, was not fond of the sloping buttons or horizontal layout and generally chose the Deck because I didn't see much alternatives at the time, ergonomics is not the thing I would criticize it on after holding it. I still will trade it for a smaller handheld PC in the future but I will miss that comfort just a bit. It looks dumb but it works.
Too big.
I prefer my portable gaming devices small.
PSP was the perfect size, honestly wish we had more modern portables around that size.
Switch is too big as well. It's not comfortable to use in more relaxed or unconventional positions due to the weight and size.
i dont leave house to play videogames.
I play videogames at home, on higher performance PC with large screen and proper keyboard and mouse (or pad if games are comfy for pad like racing games). There are only 24 hours in the day, why should I spend some of these hours playing on inferior handheld setup if I instead can play on superior desktop setup?
These things are for people with no actual home (they have place to sleep but it's not a real home).
Or only legit case if your commute includes long public transit ride without lane change (train most likely). Or if you are janitor who sits all day staring at surveillance camera in storehouse where nothing ever happens.
It's everything you'd dream a hacked vita/switch can do. And does it remarkably well.
>b-but my battery life!
Most games on low give you 3 hours minimum.
Played new vegas all day and it lasted a full 8 hours.
>b-but you don't leave the house!
Yeah? But I can play it all over the house and it's super easy to bring to a friend's house. Even easier than bringing a switch over because I can use any controller
>b-but it's all Linux!
Proton has come a long way. Most games that don't support it at all aren't even worth playing.
Proton even works better than windows for quite a few games
>b-b-b-but it's never going to not be a niche!
Yeah? It's well supported and enough people have one where troubleshooting specific games or problems are as easy as a Google search to figure out.
I have 100% control over what I do with mine. I can play starless, space pirate Sara and other eroges in private.
I can do side stuff in RPGs while watching TV.
Did I mention pretty much any game runs on it? Seriously any game I've thrown at it it runs well enough. Small screen, you don't need ultra or anything.
The single best gaming purchase I've ever made.
Cry more while I play persona 3 Reload and like a dragon infinite wealth in bed.
Oh and I can hook it up to the TV easier than a switch and use any controller I desire.

The matte display is fine
You wouldn't notice any difference between it and the glossy surface unless you're looking for it, and the matte coating is better at handling reflections which is beneficial if you actually use your Steam Deck outside of your house
I'll be playing it mostly in bed, and on the train.
You'll want the non-glare finish, then
You won't notice the difference in a dark room on your bed and the matte coating will help with sun coming through the windows on the train better than the glossy coating
You might not like the matte finish on an OLED panel, word of caution.

If you want something you can fit in your pocket you could always just spend $1000 on a phone to play games that look like this https://youtu.be/nFsy4mb3T1w
i do have one
it's my main computer right now, since my wife's been using the good one for her own purposes. its only flaw is that tf2 runs like dog ass.
I don't see myself using one. Most games I'm playing on PC are better played with mouse and keyboard and if I feel the need to have it portable, it's usually a gamepad game for which I have Switch. Plus I have Razer Kishi for emulating on the phone.
I dunno, maybe hook up a type-c hub to the Deck and use mkb, can you you do that? How many type-c port does the Deck have? Or dock is a must? 'eck on 'ock hehe
>I dunno, maybe hook up a type-c hub to the Deck and use mkb, can you you do that? How many type-c port does the Deck have? Or dock is a must?
It has a single type-C port that's main purpose is for charging, but you can connect any other device to that port
A dock will give you access to more USB ports (and just about any laptop dock will work) and, yes, you can just hook up a mouse and keyboard; the only issue is you might have to utilize desktop mode to get the mouse and keyboard controls to work in some games
I just have a chinkheld and play gameboy games on that because those games were made to be played in short fun bursts like if you're on public transport.
If I get a SteamDeck I'm gonna try to boot up Kingdom Come Deliverance and then my train will arrive at my destination before I even get to do anything substantial, let a lone even reach a save point.
>If I get a steamdeck I'm gonna try to boot up Kingdom Come Deliverance and then my train will arrive at my destination before I even get to do anything substantial, let a lone even reach a save point.
While I don't disagree, do remember that one of the biggest features of the Steam Deck over the other handheld PCs is it's suspend feature
In your example, you could simply just sleep your Steam Deck at the end of your commute and resume from that exact point without needing to have saved on your commute back home

Xemu, no. I've already played every single original Xbox game I was even remotely interested in playing.
Microsoft killed it quickly in favor of the 360. That meant going to Babbages/Electronics Boutique, playing $70, and walking out with a massive stack of games. Steam sale before steam. Good times.
Why don't you have one?
too big
cause i'd rather save money to buy a better graphics card
zen2 ipc is terrible
I have two
The original release and the OLED LE
I'm a big fan of the Deck and what Valve did to embolden the handheld PC market
How is the OLED compared to the LCD? I got the LCD for cheap when the OLED was announced but I'm wondering if it was a bad idea.

800p is stupid. Handheld devices should have 1080p for HD games.
720p is HD

so you can show people public how "cool" you are
How often do you leave your house?
5-6 days a week to go to work and/or get shit done like shopping.
If I'm out of the house I'm too busy to even consider playing vidya.
So you never go on road trips or leave your house for extended periods at a time?
