The fluddless levels suck too. They look like recycled test levels with horrible platforming because Mario lacks good air control options like long jumps and air kicks. The spin jump sorta of works but it's not meant for small platforms.

fludd isnt about giving a choice its just an unfun jetpack half the time. if you want actual choices look at the options in mario 64
In other games if you misjump and overshoot the mark you fall down and have to do the problem over again. In Sunshine if you misjump and overshoot the mark you just hover back and save yourself the hassle of doing it again. This trivialises all challenges because outside of specific minigames you can do this everywhere, be it a basic level early in the game or near the end of the game where the shines are nominally harder.
OP is basically saying that he's unable to separate mechanics and themes.
As someone who hates most 3d marios, I though it was good. Probably because it's mostly novelty with little mechanical complexity and quite unlike the others in that sense, but that's what I liked, it played unlike the others.

Won’t bother explaining because you never played the game, if you did you’d know Mario gets to turn into a boo as a power for many missions and has many other abilities too like turning into a bee for hive missions and what not, the levels aren’t generic because if you played the game you would actually see all their secrets

I agree. None of the designs besides pauline and wedding bowser are any good and the levels are shit
i think the only really well designed levels in the game were the prehistoric and poison jungle worlds. The game was fun, but was somewhere between Galaxy and 64, while not being as memorable as either.
Galaxy and its sequel make way more sense in why they're structured the way they are and control the way they do when you come to terms with the idea that 3D Land and 3D World are a refinement on Galaxy
