What a crock of shit.
Around the time of BFA it was known that only around 1 mil players were active at that time from leaks that blizzard had to force modders to fix instantly because it broke the "WE FINE!" narrative.
And Classic had hurdles more parses than retail but still never added up to 3 mil.

Devs don't know shit about fan demand.
Yep. Consumers know what they want, but not how. That's what you need to figure otu and why you shouldn't listen to consumers beyond what grabs their atention.
>If we listened to the demands the consumer make on how to make climbing more engaging and accesible for everyone, the solution would be to make the world flat
classic was declining faster than every other expansion. it was the hype for shadowlands (even if it turned out shit later) that made up for the player loss
I barely PvP aside from shit like early SL because my BiS trinket came from it. Blizzard speedran MoP's patches to stick us on SoO for nearly a year and a half, it was fricking moronic.
the only thing from that era i was sorry i missed was being able to cast while moving. still can't believe they went back on that shit because pvp homosexuals cried.
The important part here is the fact that everything prior to classic had those numbers ALONE, while the numbers now are retail + classic + SoD + HC if that's still alive. Removing all the classic variant subs from the equation would probably cut the subs down by around 40% (if you take parsing stats into account), we will obviously never know the actual sub count but it's nowhere near the numbers WoW pulled before, BUT investors doesn't fricking understand this so they're probably happy
>if you take parsing stats into account
Parsing stats are unreliable, less boss kills in retail because Heroic is kind of useless and Mythic is way harder plus guilds extending often end up with no kills, contributing nothing to those numbers. Unless you have an actual number of reports rather than the parse count from statistics, they can't be compared 1-to-1, and that goes from retail to classic to xiv, and even report count has to be framed around the group size.
???? are you moronic? you can't see the numbers???
This whole thing is based on two massive assumptions >the y-axis cleanly starts at 0 >the first data point on the graph aligns with the last reported sub/player number
Neither of which are close to guaranteed to be true.
Remember as always: if the numbers looked good, they wouldn't be shy about telling you what they were.
Indeed, they have one number they show off which is "total registered accounts". It can only go up and is naturally a big impressive number. The only other insight available are third-party survey sights and the fact that the servers couldn't handle EW launch.
Registered accounts is playing with numbers just like Blizzard did with Chinese subs for years to get their 12M headline. XIV has a lot of registrations because the free trial is huge.
>they wouldn't be shy about telling you what they were
I don't think we'll ever see actual numbers out of WoW again because they know it'll always get compared to that 12 million they announced in Wrath. They're definitely not shy when they have some way to say "fastest ever" for sure though. We would 100% know if WoW was at 7 million subs or if classic brought back 4 million players like
Genuinely it seems like Dragonflight turned things around gay frogs not withstanding. Seems like most people enjoyed it to some extent, wonder if War Within will be as good.
t. quit at BFA but read user experiences, will hop back in if War Within gets positive reviews from users
I love that a game that gets no updates and is just the old version of the game is padding numbers high, and the army of devs working on the new shit are damaging it and the cause of the player losses.
So where are the NUMBERS!?
I too can say my life is doing great and post lines go up without context and demand you accept the lines go up.

API said player count was under a million in late 2019 for wow specifically. So now we know that these are that fricking made up metric of "monthly active users" where they combine anyone who uses battle.net for any game counting as a wow 'subscriber'.
i bet they count anyone who logs in to a character even if they aren't paying a sub and don't even play lol. gee what's with all these accounts with gibbiersh names and only a single level 1 character that only logs in once a month????? hmmmm
Personally I think people are underestimating Cata and that it will be surprisingly good to many. A lot of people will realise pretty fast that Cata was considered bad before because it took the leap into what we consider to be retail wow, the content got harder, the world changed, talent overhaul, etc etc.. made a lot of the older "classic" players quit, but nowadays I think there's a lot of people that will actually enjoy it. Early Cata pvp as warrior.. nobody can deny that wasn't kino. But I raided almost every single day in classic wotlk with a shit ton of random people and I never heard anyone say they're even trying classic Cata if it releases, so you're probably right
every expansion could be vastly improved by a few changes and a compressed patch schedule, blizzard has been really bad at identifying those changes tho
Cata was the beginning of the homogenized horseshit retail became. the game only got noticeable spikes when classic was playable again because that's what WoW is, that's what made this game so popular, not blizz making the level up process so braindead a 3 year old could do it but then focusing everything on "endgame" parsing raidlog autism.
You know shits bad for retail when classic and retail numbers are both combined on that chart. >M+ is still a failed e-sport the majority of players don't wanna play >retail pvp is still a failed e-sport the majority of players don't wanna play >retail raiding is still a failed e-sport the majority of players don't wanna play >class balance is balanced around the failed e-sport
SoD from my understanding is still poping off and whatever the frick Wrath? I think classic is in still at the lich king? That shits most likely retail levels of population. I think the only other thing is hardcore which is pretty dead.
TBC was the real beginning of the end of WoW because it focused entirely on endgame raiding autism and turned the entire game into that where leveling only existed as a way to pad out your sub time with no real effort put into it to make it fun or engaging at all, just making it take as long as possible. gays just don't want to admit it because old good new bad and most of these morons never played vanilla, they're all wrath babies when the game turned into giving normies welfare epix so they could LARP as hardcore MMO players.

I maintain that the real appeal of WoW back in the day was how much smaller and more integrated that community (people who would play a WoW MMO and were able to) was. Logging on and meeting people was cooler when there was a higher chance that that person would be relevant in your actual life or had relatively similar lived experiences as you. Back when it was a white or east asian male's game.

Blizzard counted subs based on the per minute pricing that China was playing on where anyone who had any time left on their account would be counted as a sub. In 2016, the Chinese sub switched to monthly and conveniently their official sub count announcements ended at the same time.
It really is crazy, huh. All Blizzard has to do is show how many people are subscribed monthly or more.
So... WoW never actually had 12 million subs?
