Remember that the commonwealth did not exist back then, Canada and Australia were still technically a part of the British Empire though they had local autonomy in their politics. The firebombing took months if not years to reach the death and destruction toll that it did. The nukes wiped out two cities in a matter of seconds. It wasn't the destruction wholesale, but rather how quick and easy it was to cause that level of destruction. You can fight back during a months-long firebombing campaign, but if they can just delete an entire city with one bomb, what hope do you have?

Because the Japs had openly declared that they would not surrender no matter what, and were in the process of training children as young as 7 and old ladies how to fight guerrilla warfare. It was either drop the nukes and shock Japan so bad that they give up, or a full scale invasion of the Japanese home islands. Furthermore, the Russians were also planning a land invasion of Japan, which would've meant that in the aftermath Japan would've been split between the western allies and the Soviets like Korea and Germany were. Ending the war with a total surrender to the US meant that they fell solely under US occupation, which in the long run we can see was a much better outcome for them.

Pretty much. To the USSR, though, not to Japan. The Japanese surrendered not because of the atomic bombs, but because the USSR entered the war against them. It was a show of strength to the Soviets as the Cold war had already begun

The firebombing took months if not years to reach the death and destruction toll that it did. The nukes wiped out two cities in a matter of seconds. It wasn't the destruction wholesale, but rather how quick and easy it was to cause that level of destruction. You can fight back during a months-long firebombing campaign, but if they can just delete an entire city with one bomb, what hope do you have?

Because the Japs had openly declared that they would not surrender no matter what, and were in the process of training children as young as 7 and old ladies how to fight guerrilla warfare. It was either drop the nukes and shock Japan so bad that they give up, or a full scale invasion of the Japanese home islands. Furthermore, the Russians were also planning a land invasion of Japan, which would've meant that in the aftermath Japan would've been split between the western allies and the Soviets like Korea and Germany were. Ending the war with a total surrender to the US meant that they fell solely under US occupation, which in the long run we can see was a much better outcome for them.
