Xbox got it right. Why? Let me explain. Playstation can be thrown straight out as shapes are just not convenient to say out loud. "What to click?" "Uh square! Triangle!" No, a single letter is faster and better. Now for the placement. Nintendo FRICKED up, why? Well you see... Why is the X on top? Is there a single good reason? There is not. Y should be on top because Y is the vertical dimension while X is horizontal. This is something that comes naturally to us. X on the left and Y on the top just makes more sense. And A should be on the bottom because A represents the primary button, the first you lay your finger on, you do not go out of your way to place your finger to the RIGHT by default. No. Xbox wins.

>press button to do thing
>button doesn't do thing
>"oh it's the other button on this layout"
>press other button and it does thing
>move on with my life
most multiplat games dont alter their layout across consoles. so A will be B and X.
Also this
Okay now do you wipe sitting down or standing up?
whichever way I want too homie
I kneel.
it seriously depends, there's shit that reaches the entirety of your ass and you'll get your underwear wet if you don't clean it, wiping it while sitting is simply not comfortable
>he wipes
cleaning is a b***h's job, beta
I let it crust
> 5 minutes in to unskippable cutscene, Press X
this , happened to me in darksouls 1 learned what was what and moved on.
also i have to use playstation controllers i need my sticks on the same level idk why
Microshit is wrong by default as it came last. The others were established and part of normal muscle memory.
Wrong, X and A for PS4 and Xbox usually means select, Nintendo is the one ass backwards.
Are you moronic? Xbox controller is a literal copy of the dreamcast/Sega controllers. Xbox as a whole was born from Sega.
>in japan O button is confirm and X button is deny
>in the west X button is confirm and O button is deny
Was there a reason why western sony made that switch?
having the button closest to your thumb being the one to confirm makes sense to me.
Same for jumping, I'll never get over games that use O to jump
No clue, but your thumb naturally rests on the X so it feels more natural considering how many games require you to press a button to go through a menu or skip dialogue constantly
Nah you're either on O Triangle or X and Square it doesn't feel that different
Going from JP playstation games to NA region games is the only time switching controllers fricks with me
They didn’t make that switch, Nintendo did.
Nintendo always did A to confirm and B to cancel.
Oh good a controller thread.
I'm thinking of buying an Xbox elite controller so I can bind the rear paddles for rolling and magic switching in dark souls. Are they good?
The elite is twice the price if a regular u paddled one so I'm hoping it's worth it
Please respond
It cannot be possible that no one has an elite xbox controller
It’s a good controller but they have crazy quality control issues for such an expensive product
I’d still buy it again though, it feels better than any other controller
I don’t use the paddles but I believe they can be remapped on PC not sure about Xbox
If you don't use the paddles why not just get a regular one
shut up, buygay, we're talking about button placement, not how you're spending your daddy's money
Waaaaaaahhhh *sob* *sob*
My brother uses elite controllers and goes through them at an alarming rate(as in he sends them in for repair or buys new ones). I don’t know if he’s just a gorilla with them or if it’s just “modern controllers” but that suggests a level of quality that’s not worth the ridiculous price they ask for
The elite is a complete piece of shit. It's famously unreliable.
Damn now I don't know what to buy
There are no legitimately great modern controllers. These days when first party was the golden standard are long behind us. If you are mainly a PC player it's worth looking into modern chink pads. There are getting really up there in terms of quality but they all have cons. Latency or reliability problems in varying degrees. All of them superior to Dualsense elite and espectially Xbox elite. If you want to use them with Xbox you need to check for compatibility and don't even bother getting anything else than the regular DSense if you are on PS5.
Take a look at the Flydigi vader 4 or the Gulikit KK3 Max. Do you research properly, they are far from perfect. Just not as shit as the first party ones.
A on the right is the correct format. Thank god the Steam Deck has a dedicated option just for it, A on the bottom is so shit
>A on the bottom is so shit
the N64 and GCN had B on the left and A on the bottom
>n64
A was the right and B was the left you absolute mongrel
A was down/right from B
if N64 had full sized X/Y buttons, A would end up being the bottom bottom
even the xbox controller has the back button on the left and it's used for cancelling/returning from menus
well technically, Z was on the bottom the the N64 controller.
>A on the right is the correct format
In what world? Are you arabic or something?
>A on the right is wrong because... arabic!
>A should be at the BOTTOM instead
Great thinking
nintendo invented ABXY with the snes over 40 years ago, before microsoft made even 1 game
the nes set up the B/A button layout where B is the secondary action (back/brake,cancel) while A is primary (jump, accelerate, do thing, talk, confirm), this has carried onto all their controls
playstation just copied the snes pad for their controller and made it different
there is consistent logic to it though
O is yes in japan
X is no in japan
and they map to nintendo's B/A for cancel/confirm
triangle at the top is also easy to remember
OXTS is also 1 2 3 4 sides
neat, never realised that
pirates invented "x marks the spot", not "x marks where the spot is not", frickin weeb
how many pirates designed controllers?
it's called button MAPPING for a reason
They don't. Pirates use keyboard and mouse.
B was sprint in the original SMB on the nes
yes, and it's still a secondary action
>over 40 years ago, before microsoft made even 1 game
If my life depended on the video game knowledge of any gaming sub group, tendies would be the last I'd pick.
>Say out loud
In what context are you dictating commands to someone using the face buttons on a game controller
>playing Monster Hunter with friends
>try new weapon that my friend is more familiar with
>ask for essential combos
The situations where you have friends you fricking loser lmao
>dude, just press the attack button twice
>you need to press the jump button here
and so on. When do you actually say the name of the button? Especially since you don't know if the other person customized the layout or not.
uh oh, Google Stadia weighing in with an "Xbox got it right"
two points for xbox
stadia doesn't even exist anymore
unfortunately xbox became the pc standard, so that nonsensical layout is here to stay
>No, a single letter is faster and better
Why? I agree with your logic on why Xbox layout is more logical than Nintendo though
Xbox just took over the layout from the Dreamcast. The Dreamcast controller had to restrict itself to 4 face buttons to make room for the memory card. That's why they just swapped Nintendo's face button name's around (yeah, terrible decision) instead of going with A B C D in line with the Mega Drive's controller.
funny enough the OG xbox had 6 face buttons
They didn't swap the face buttons around, they were already in the order of the Genedrive's 6-button ABC-XYZ, only without the C and Z.
For me i just look down
Nintendo always trips me up because B is jump on the standard control mapping, but A is confirm. For the two others, the most primary and basic action is mapped to the bottom button. Over time it's lessened because I've been emulating a lot in recent years. Now I'm just used to learning a different layout for each game and ignoring what's written on my controller.
Every day we stray further from the perfection of the GameCube ABXY layout.
sony's feel the best to press
I'm a lifelong tendie and I use an xbox controller on PC and I basically never have issues. Anyone who does is weak
>try to get someone to play an emulated game
>buttons dont match
>they get confused and throw the controller at you
>. And A should be on the bottom because A represents the primary button, the first you lay your finger on, you do not go out of your way to place your finger to the RIGHT by default.
A being on the right is the true OG correct button placement though.
it should be like this tho
Abhorrent.
would actually be ok
it would work for nes, gb/gbc, n64, gcn games
but would make snes/ds/3ds/wiiu games confusing
This is objectively correct
X should be on the X axis, and Y should be on the Y axis
Press and hold B with the tip of your thumb and use your knuckle to press A
This is how the NES controller worked and how it should always work
>X should be on the X axis
>Y should be on the Y
Fricking THANK you another fricking patrician in this thread, I memorized the switch layout specifically by noting that it’s the opposite of how it should be
Yeah, that's what my brain tells me it should be (because that's pretty much the GC layout).
Xbox has B on the wrong side, and modern Nintendo is all kinds of weird.
As someone who has all three main controllers, remembering which button is
>confirm/cancel
Is a lot worse than analog positions.
Asymmetrical vs Symmetrical is a pointless discussion. It literally makes no difference and all 3 are comfortable af.
Anyway, right button should be confirm and bottom should be cancel so Microsoft and (west) sony are wrong.
I'd be fine with this too.
weeb homosexual
but those are horizontal. if you want to have that in a modern controller then you'd have
_X
B_A
_Y
is that what you want?
Nintendo is the only developer that indicates button presses with a diamond shaped indicator instead of referring to a letter. They've solved the "which one is X again" problem, now the rest of the industry just needs to catch up (once again).
>Nintendo is the only developer that indicates button presses with a diamond shaped indicator instead of referring to a letter
pretty sure the first time I saw it was pic related
Platinum is basically Nintendo so my point still stands.
Could you explain why the top button is intrinsically vertical and the left horizontal?
>should be on top because Y is the vertical dimension while X is horizontal
>This is something that comes naturally to us.
if you're going with that, X should be on the right
we read left to right, the X axis increments left to right
this is the true natural placement for X
Video games use coordinate axis like pic related. With the top left point of the screen being (0,0).
Nintendo did it right.
>shapes are just not as convenient to say out loud
what happens when you jump and press the X button?
do you look at the controller while playing? are you stupid?
>forcing people to say two- and three-syllable words to give essential directions in the middle of combat
lol, read the fricking manual ahead of time
I change all my games on PC to make O the confirm button
If Xbox had X and B swapped it would be perfect
>cancel button on the left
are you moronic?
B is for running so it being on the left makes sense
the run button should be X in that case instead.
no game console has cancel on the left
>inb4 muh nes
it had 2 buttons, and the thumb is better suited to hitting buttons in a staright line
>cancel button on the left
when you go backwards, you go left
when you go forwards, you go right
B for cancel, A for confirm is correct
also if you've played racing games or platformers, you'll realise B on the left is better
perfect for gamecube games
I've bought a controller with nintendo layout only to play it on pc as a xbox controller replacement. Maybe one day I'll be bothered enough to actually open it up and switch the buttons around
>switch the buttons
labels don't matter. are you one of those morons who throws a b***hfit because no key is labeled Ö?
nó
Good old 1 2 3 4 still superior
Same. Been using mine for almost 20 years and still works as new.
>numbers arranged anticlockwise
pure evil
NASCAR, baby! Woo!
I had this piece of shit. The square gate on the analog stick is horrible and the D-pad is connected to the controller via a tiny little peg that snaps easily
clockwise 1234 > counter-clockwise 4123
>hex
>why
>bee
>hay
Yeah you pronounce it like that if you are a spic
>Xbox got it right
sega got it right*
How bad is your memory if you can't remember what you are holding while playing a game?
I fricking hate dualshock but you're a triple Black person if you can't see the benefit of universal symbols instead of the roman alphabet.
> L1 / L2 / R1 / R2
uhh universal symbol bros?!
>universal
>functions change depending on region
I think you don't know what universal means
>don't speak english
>controller says Start but I can't read it so I never press it
>can't begin playing my vidcons
uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh?
English is already a universal language, Chang

It's the only correct way to do it, it's unfortunate that nobody has done it this way.
The EU should force them into using the same standarized system
nintendo did it first
sony did it best thoughever, letters are gay
I always pick the ▲
it just works bre▲, ▲ is the coolest
I think the Xbox and the Deck have the same controller scheme so I just use that.
Nintendo got it right, because they were the first and it's what I got used to. Those other guys came later and changed it and I don't like it.
>because they were the first
First is the worst. Second is the best.
Third is the one with the hairy chest.
Xbox is best
>X on the X-Axis
>Y on the Y-Axis
>When you say yes to something, you nod up and down, the A button being down conveys that
>when you say no to something, you shake your head side to side, where the B button is
Games should just not say buttons by name and just have those diamonds that label them only by their relative position to each other.
As someone who grew up primarily with N64 and GC, Nintendo's current layouts confuse me. I don't know why they went back to SNES layout, after the point where people were conditioned to expect the A button to be the first one immediately under your thumb, and B to be off to the left of A.
Have the same history, but I like their diamond the best.
Cause everyone else stuck with the SNES layout I guess, it kinda became industry standard
And everyone liked the classic controller for the Wii for games that didn't need the waggle so they kept iterating on that until they ended up with basically the same shape as the Xbox controller again
xbox X is the X axis and Y in the Y axis
yes these need to be standardized
>steal shit from Nintendo and do it wrong because you want to avoid legal issues
>"well achshually it's better this way"
Keep on coping.
I prefer the PS option as I find it easier to assign arbitrary positions to shapes than letters. My brain always seems to fight the idea that A is to the right of B or Y is above A.
shapes
Xbox controllers are easily the best.
>Xbox
You mean SEGA.
>A button in red
That's terrorism
A
>A red button
B
>Blue Button
X
>Xittiest color
Y
>Y am I not yellow
I don't like the SNES controller
still seems weird for sega to go 4 buttons after such a long genealogy of 6 buttons.
It's even weirder when you consider that they were the console that was most directly related to arcade machines, in which the six button layout is king.
I am currently playing on a Japanese PS3 and it switches constantly.
Menu Accept = O
In Game Accept = X
Picked up a Lightning PS3 just to play MGS4 and Person 3 FES.
>Xbox reads left to right
>Switch reads right to left
Interesting.
Every game plays the same these days its not like you need to memorize each layout. Back in 5th gen things could get kinda nutty if you were playing a port but it wasn't an issue even then.
You may seethe, but the GC controller is clearly just the best in terms of sheer intuitive design
>A is big and it's green, and confirms things
>B is smaller and red, and cancels things
>X and Y are grey and out of the way, because they're going to be secondary functions in most games
It's peak. You may protest, but it's peak.
I think X and Y could use some improvements.
I feel like in most GC games it just seems to fit, and work logically. Like how in Zelda, the items are on X and Y.
I was better at doing fusion in the gamecube version of budokai 2 because the shape of the button icons also indicated their relative position.
Dual shock stick placement > xbox
Xbox triggers > DS
DS BUMPERS > Xbox
the actual sticks themselves Xbox > DS
Xbox start/select > DS
THE DUKE's grip = DS handles > 360 onward
I never touched a 'classic' controller from nintendo, but aside from button size the actual GC controllers were made to mash. Also I wish we had more controller sticks with gate options for fighting game gays.
None of this matter at all at the end of the day Right is for interacting, left is for cancelling, down is for jump ant up is for specials most of the time
Xbox established theirs last and have no games worth a damn since like 2008. I don't care if they're "right" or not, what they aren't is relevant.
>Y should be on top because Y is the vertical dimension while X is horizontal. This is something that comes naturally to us.
I can promise you this has never come naturally to anyone but you. But you are at least correct on the placement simply because XY going right to left is more natural and easier for inexperienced players to remember. And while you're correct about Nintendo's AB placement, the logic for it is simply because the placement was inherited from older controllers in which the rightmost placement was more natural while being held.
If it was right to left on the NES, why didn't they do the same with the 1 and 2 buttons on the Wii?
>Why is the X on top
I assume because Japanese read right to left, while we read left to right. They probably think the Xbox controller is the one that is backwards
Xbox and Nintendo make sense. Playstation is like the failed abortion knock off of them. Also all games on PC support the xbox layout by default which makes ABXY the gaming standard.
