i tried to play this several times in my life and have never made it further than nondescript corridors in the first level. its just. ever so slightly too shit. not awful just without nostalgia for it i have zero affinity for it
i think it would be more fun if some enemies would be less damage spongy so i can just rush through them quicker, at times i felt as i was stuck in corners trying to fight off several enemies at once and not advancing at all
One of the things that makes it good as that most of the attacks are telegraphed and avoidable so you actually have to pay attention, if the enemies died too quickly this wouldn't work.
Why? They are effectively Pinkies from Doom and nobody complains about those being too weak. Berserkers were never utilized well due to cramped level design and enemy count limits, neither of which were an issue in this new engine but they buffed them anyway.

So every now and again they can throw a horde of episode 1 enemies at you in your fully decked out arsenal and shred through them in ways that would have been impossible before. they knew exactly what they did, they selected humans which were suitable for stroggification, the others were just turned into pulp and made into stroyent to feed their troops. essentially extermination factories, its like the end solution for humans. strogg where designed to resemble intergalactic nazis, even the assault on stroggos was called operation overlord.
There was no stroggification process shown in the q2. Part when marines are dissasmbled is the stroyent plant, where humies are minced into stroyent, food/fuel ooze.
Closest to the strogg assembling scene was the place where you steal Tank Commander's head while he is under repair.
I was playing that and one of the MG boys fricking jumped and went prone and actually surprised me enough to take like a Quarter of my health off. The flyers are also really aggressive now, they shoot at you and close to slash with their wings, they do a lot of damage.
Just play the remaster honestly, don't listen to Ganker b***hing, the remaster works perfectly and comes with all the expansions and the N64 version. Also the music doesn't work for the original without fricking with it.

They have their chance to give Quake 2 spotlight, with all its strogg story, brown military atmosphere, levels that provide interesting environments to fight bad guys.
And then they forcingy tie quake 1 studf, which is now canon apparently , levels have their ups and down, they are vast yet at the same time boring with countless absolutely flat arenas that flooded by frickton of enemies, there is no any attempt to mix combat by good enemy types and placement combo. Peak of combat design so far was "hey here are the medics from addons and now they just will spam guards at you. It is not fun. Ammo depot or strogg prison levels from og quake 2 is way ahead in that regard.
It was always an absurdly powerful weapon, it just chewed through ammo like crazy. Far as I can tell, the Machinegun was buffed, and the Railgun inexplicably went from 150 damage to 100. Frick that change.
37 year old boomer here. This is honestly the best remaster I've ever played. It took the original Quake 2 from a 7/10 experience to a 9/10 one. I'll tell you how:

Original Q2 looked really drab and boring to look at while this looks so nice >Made enemies faster and more aggressive in general, added new animations and attacks which made previously useless enemies like the berserker into formidable ones#
They really did a great job. Good on them. I never thought Q2 was bad but this remaster makes it an excellent fricking FPS. OG Q2 just never felt right to play, it felt gross, this remaster has really changed all that. GG to them.
The splash damage isn't what bothers me. It's the sheer size of the splash damage that's bigger than a fricking rocket explosion now, combined with the fact that it sends you flying really damn easily.
One person was working on a PSX campaign port, though it didn't finish in time for QA and all. They plan to release it in a remaster-friendly format should it not get official approval. But I can say now that addons are not gonna happen; everything has to be rebaked and reworked a bit due to the underlying engine changes, compared to Q1 and Doom allowing them to just about drop things in with tweaks at most.
That's nice to hear about the PSX port at least. They've done a decent job giving doom and quake support post launch for a bit, so hoping we get something else later.

You realize Quake I had a remaster two years ago and ever since Doom Eternal, it's been openly rumored and theorized that Quake was the next on the reboot list, right?
There's no traditional enemies in Quake 3 Arena, unless they straight up remade the roster from 1/2 for whatever reason. They can't really do the same and that's a hell of a lot more work.
I'm hoping for something like a new proper campaign, maybe something like a UT singleplayer. If not that at least the multiplayer will be populated by something other than slavs for a while and that will be nice.
Crazy what some weapon, movement, ai, level design tweaks can do to improve a game.
Play the original you'll get bored before finishing the first sequence of levels.

they knew exactly what they did, they selected humans which were suitable for stroggification, the others were just turned into pulp and made into stroyent to feed their troops. essentially extermination factories, its like the end solution for humans. strogg where designed to resemble intergalactic nazis, even the assault on stroggos was called operation overlord.

There was no stroggification process shown in the q2. Part when marines are dissasmbled is the stroyent plant, where humies are minced into stroyent, food/fuel ooze.
Closest to the strogg assembling scene was the place where you steal Tank Commander's head while he is under repair.
I was playing that and one of the MG boys fricking jumped and went prone and actually surprised me enough to take like a Quarter of my health off. The flyers are also really aggressive now, they shoot at you and close to slash with their wings, they do a lot of damage.

It's not really removed all the way, it's more it jiggles a little bit all around, but it doesn't try to spray the ceiling. It's kinda how real full auto feels.

The N64 port is kind of shitty. If it wasn't for the low ammo count and improved AI it wouldn't be memorable at all.
didnt really have a problem with the low ammo until like the last 5 levels or so. but those levels go by so fast and then its over.

They have their chance to give Quake 2 spotlight, with all its strogg story, brown military atmosphere, levels that provide interesting environments to fight bad guys.
And then they forcingy tie quake 1 studf, which is now canon apparently , levels have their ups and down, they are vast yet at the same time boring with countless absolutely flat arenas that flooded by frickton of enemies, there is no any attempt to mix combat by good enemy types and placement combo. Peak of combat design so far was "hey here are the medics from addons and now they just will spam guards at you. It is not fun. Ammo depot or strogg prison levels from og quake 2 is way ahead in that regard.

It was always an absurdly powerful weapon, it just chewed through ammo like crazy. Far as I can tell, the Machinegun was buffed, and the Railgun inexplicably went from 150 damage to 100. Frick that change.
37 year old boomer here. This is honestly the best remaster I've ever played. It took the original Quake 2 from a 7/10 experience to a 9/10 one. I'll tell you how:

>Fixed reticule misalignment of where you bullets would fire
>Removed all input lag from both your mouse and the guns shooting
>Made the mouse feel fricking amazing while it was utterly repulsive in the OG, even with modern source ports
>Added tasteful colours, lighting and shadowing effects in a really subtle and well executed way. Original Q2 looked really drab and boring to look at while this looks so nice
>Made enemies faster and more aggressive in general, added new animations and attacks which made previously useless enemies like the berserker into formidable ones#
They really did a great job. Good on them. I never thought Q2 was bad but this remaster makes it an excellent fricking FPS. OG Q2 just never felt right to play, it felt gross, this remaster has really changed all that. GG to them.

The splash damage isn't what bothers me. It's the sheer size of the splash damage that's bigger than a fricking rocket explosion now, combined with the fact that it sends you flying really damn easily.
I know we can't get traditional addons due to dll frickery, but I hope we get horde mode and a couple of fan campaigns ported over at least.
One person was working on a PSX campaign port, though it didn't finish in time for QA and all. They plan to release it in a remaster-friendly format should it not get official approval. But I can say now that addons are not gonna happen; everything has to be rebaked and reworked a bit due to the underlying engine changes, compared to Q1 and Doom allowing them to just about drop things in with tweaks at most.
That's nice to hear about the PSX port at least. They've done a decent job giving doom and quake support post launch for a bit, so hoping we get something else later.

There's no traditional enemies in Quake 3 Arena, unless they straight up remade the roster from 1/2 for whatever reason. They can't really do the same and that's a hell of a lot more work.
I'm hoping for something like a new proper campaign, maybe something like a UT singleplayer. If not that at least the multiplayer will be populated by something other than slavs for a while and that will be nice.
