I have no idea why they didn't get authentic voice actors and went with two americans instead. Considering they ripped both of them off they could have gotten an even better deal hiring actual Serbs.

Vladamir mashkov who niko was originally based off of was supposed to voice him but turned down the role because he didn't think the game was going to be a big deal. Michael hollick who did the mocap for niko ended up doing it instead.

What voice actor other than the top tier ones made that much in 2008? Doing vidya performances only recently started deluding itself it's Hollywood. Vlad would've surely gotten way more anyway.

Niko’s VA didn’t even know he was voicing for a GTA game until it came out.

You still know the name of the company that you can search up and Rockstar was throwing big money around to warrant a deeper look anyway. Vlad's career wasn't all that great either, he was the guy from Behind Enemy Lines that nobody could recall by name and that was about it.

The machine translated serbian in the game is so funny
        >Roman asks Niko if he ever held american breasts or something
        >Niko answers "can't say that I have"
        >pronounces it "ne mogu da kažem da imam"

        >he basically said "can't say that I possess"
I don't think serbian even has a phrase equivalent to "can't say that I have" you'd just say "no, never" or something like that, they wrote a uniquely English script/line and translated it literally word by word

Probably zero, piracy in the region is worse than Russia, though I figure if they put so much effort in making other things feel authentic they could've put some effort in the language translation as well or at least avoid it altogether

Lmao I thought it was an exaggerated parody, but I guess it was easier to get a hold of VAs and consultants for those than for serbian in America/Britain

Or they thought no one would care, as Peter Stormare put it talking about the various eastern european villains he depicted and the fake accents he put on for them that the directors didn't care about "they can't tell Serbia from Senegal"

                Anonymous

It seems it's mostly correcting the pronunciation and not the awkwardly translated lines. Niko and Roman's pronunciation doesn't sound native but there's so many dialect variations that the guy in the video doesn't necessarily sound better, especially since he's not a VA and is pronouncing everything kind of flatly and unenthusiastically. He even puts the accent on the wrong words sometimes like Niko which is strange. At the very least I could buy Roman's warped accent as an "expat who doesn't get to practice a lot" sort of thing.

I hated how nonchalant of a reveal it was, a simple conversation in the car with Dave. It should've been a suspicion nagging Trevor instead of something confirmed that fast and we get the reveal only when Trevor digs the coffin out.

That is exactly what happens when you play that mission as Trevor. You have two separate possible perspectives depending on the character you select, the Dave conversation only plays for Michael.

Is turning on Francis even a betrayal? Niko is basically blackmailed into helping him, and the rest of the McCrearys don't seem that broken up when Niko chooses Derrick instead.

Helping Francis is objectively the best choice from a gameplay standpoint, since he can get the cops off your back. That and you can barter with him for more money.

True, but ditching the cops isn't the hardest thing in IV, and you're bound to have plenty of cash by that point already, so putting a bullet in him isn't that big of an opportunity cost.

They're both dirtbags who want Niko to kill the people who know what they've been up to. Difference is in how they go about it: Niko helps out Derrick out simply because Packie asked him for a favor, while Francis threatens Niko into it - at least, until Niko has enough dirt to turn the tables on Francis.

The NATO bombing was not "into the stone age" and it was never done in the name of democracy or freedom.

It was done because serb paramilitary attacked neutral and UN forces during the Bosnian war, that is when they bombed the Serb side of Bosnia. They bombed Serbia itself when the serb military kept up with their war crimes and attacking of netual forces in Kosovo

I get the sense he was a fricking killing machine in the war, they joke about how he was in incredible condition when first moving to Liberty City, and had dreams of being a pro wrestler after the war. They could never portray homosexuality as a coping mechanism for PTSD today.

It's just good writing. That scene kind of showed that he clearly held his history in the back of his mind, and didn't think it would ever catch up with him. I'm surprised he didn't have a role in the gay tony storyline, but I think most characters could have been part of more stuff, like Elizabeta with Luiz, or Billy.

I feel like Dimitri wasn't present enough in the game to have him as the main antagonist.

He betrays Niko and just hides for the rest of the game until the very end. He wasn't always on your ass like Tenpenny.

i wondered why iv is so different than the other games in series, and I've come to the conclusion that iv isn't an gta, only has gta in it's title but it's completely different. Other ones were the first movie games in the industry. With their influences based on pop culture and their goal to appealing to the masses.
I read through iv development process, their team had that passion, soul and effort that made games like max payne masterpiece, bunch of white dudes setting their eyes on horizon and looking to make history. just like max payne, iv team were sent to new york and they took around 250000 pictures, from every inch and corner. the goal was to make liberty city a character. Liberty city is small but packed with details not big and empty and soulless like v and ton of other games. even 15 years later libertycity is still the most alive, atmospheric, detailed open world created in videogames history
The development team was told that the euphoria engine was impossible to implement, but some of the programmers managed to make it work in a short amount of time. and it's still has the best ragdoll and physics alongside max payne
Unlike the other games iv doesn't take a political side, it bashes all sides simultaneously
Being able to browse internet and reading the funniest things, a divorced women that becomes a femenist, a Guy clones his younger self and fricks him, a website that you can buy babys
people on the streets saying cigarettes are better than sex, cops begging for their mom while being killed, and thousand of other details that made libertycity absurd and tragic and realistic
Portraying gays as psychotic narcissists, israelites as money laundering backstabbing frauds, blacks as gangsters obsessed with fame and money, america as an dystopia hell hole. this game would have never been made today
Driving through libertycity and listening to radio rock while it's snowing, raining, it's the most honest and beautiful experience that you could get from an visual art

I think IV was actually quite natural coming off of SA. The character writing quality is there in both games in the mission scenes and stuff, but IV takes the atmosphere to the next level with the physicality and expression of npc's. What really fricks me up is the culture that the writing nails, inside and out of cutscenes. When you just sit there in a car listening to the news, switching stations, it feels like shit is happening. The peds that you randomly kill, they feel like strangers who exist. Maybe they are still videogamey in ways, but it's never been more immersive than that. There is also a bit of chaotic programming that allows for npc's to start fighting each other randomly while you're in a pc cafe or where ever. It's crazy how that structure somehow got scrapped.

It’s a grounded and exaggerated chaos, that’s for sure
GTA V had a tone like that too, except the impression I got is that while pedestrian/police banter in both games are meant to make them seem pathetic, IV is trying to make you feel pity and second-hand shame while V wants you to laugh and want to kill
Both are parodies, but the tonal shift is utterly massive

I feel IV was, in many ways, ahead of its time.

People were expecting San Andreas 2.0, and really weren’t ready for a grim and grounded crime simulator. Still, IV pushed the envelope and set things which have since become industry standards in sandbox games. IV popularised using the trigger buttons for acceleration and breaking, and also made taxis as fast travel a standard feature.

I feel that V’s mistake was backpedaling on some of the features that made IV unique in order to cater to the arcadey crowd. Ironic, considering that they went back in the direction of IV for RDR2. RDR2 has its own set of problems though (the biggest being the “no fun allowed” mission design).

Why didn’t Niko use all the money and connections he earned from his jobs to run his own gang? It’s kind of obvious that Niko isn’t going to be anything other than a killer and a criminal, so why not turn that into a business? Is being a freelance hitman for the mob really that good of a deal?

He hates criminals. Talks about heroin dealers and gun runners taking over his family farm back home. Pisses himself off later in the game, asks Roman what his trait is besides being a proficient murderer.

He comes from a small, tightly knit Caribbean community. Small, impoverished communities tend to look out for people that they’re friends with, since that’s how they survive. It’s usually people like Playboy X who want to go beyond those communities that turn into snakes.

I think Jacob liked the way Niko took care of Roman. It's undercooked, but Badman has issues with Russian gangsters, Jacob is very loyal to Badman, Russians burn down the cab business after betraying Niko and Jacob at the warehouse. They're sort of drawn together.

do any of you do 100% completions of these games? solely judging by the 100% completion difficulty vs reward i rank IV as one of the worst.

200 pigeons is simply too many, the reward is universally agreed to be pointless, some pigeons are lazily stacked up in the same spots. cops are everywhere and constantly chasing you down as you collect them. the anti-fun of this activity is momentarily exhilarating then quickly becomes exhausting. also shooting pigeons has a random chance of crashing the game.

doing all the side activities with your friends is just a big time investment and often quite boring. they will always call you for the activities you haven't done yet first so that makes it less annoying. do have to keep track of what you did anyway just to avoid wasting time.

stunt jumps are a slog. some are really difficult to pull off. the one i hate doing the most is the one in north algonquin next to the bridge that goes to bohan. ramp over a hill and land on the docks. whether the jump registers or not, you're going into the drink. reminds me of the one in GTAV where you have to land a jump to the lighthouse island. whether you get it or not, you're fricked.

stevie's car thefts are the only thing i really enjoy doing. you can easily find all 30 just by the photos you're sent without help if you know the islands well. however, you have to do a string of car thefts for brucie first before he gives your contact info to stevie, and there is an unfortunately large chance he never initiates contact with you, softlocking you out of 100%.

Pigeons were definitely a weird idea for a collectible— Especially considering that there’s no reward for doing them. They give you rewards for maxing out friendships, so IDK why they didn’t give you rewards for collectibles too.

the reward for pigeons is an Annihilator will spawn on top of one of the buildings in Algonquin. IIRC only accessible via window cleaner lift. the problem with that is the Annihilator is also accessible in several other locations on the same island, and the one you are rewarded with rarely ever spawns on top of said building. so the time it takes to drive there and take the window lift up just to be met with disappointment of it not being there, usually a massive waste of time. i try to think of it as an artistic decision as a big theme of the game is disappointment.

i was considering writing a mod that gives you weapon spawns at your safehouses as rewards for collecting pigeons in steps of 20 similar to previous titles. it doesn't make much sense to make this as there is a limit of how much ammo you can carry, and you can already fill your entire inventory with a quick call to Jacob any time you want.

I would say RDR2 is bigger bullshit to 100% simply because of the moronic gambler challenges and it's clear that nobody at Rockstar knows how ridiculous they are. But not getting anything for pigeons is also bullshit especially after Vice City gave you a bunch of unlocks for getting the statues.

I got to around 90% completion and called it a day after those challenges. Blackjack gives me a sort of PTSD now.

intend to play RDR2 at some point but the 100% does seem very intimidating. while i usually do it for all rockstar titles i might pass on that one.

for the three 3d titles the hidden package reward system made a lot of sense and felt very rewarding towards the player as the latter two of those titles had purchasable assets you could save your money to spend on instead.

i appreciate that there are still hidden weapon spawns all over the maps of the HD games at least, so if you spent all your money on ammo/weapons sandboxing, get them taken away, and need them back, you are not entirely up shit creek. missions always feed you with mad ammo too.
