It is 3D because it has X,Y and Z axes. It's just limited. That's why you don't have multiple floors over one another.

It is 3d. The map isn't though

3D in the same way a drawing on a piece of paper is 3D

If I have an image on two pieces of paper, does that image have an extra dimension compared to an image on just one piece of paper?

Because it's 3D; height exists in the engine. "But the maps are laid out in 2D" is also a flimsy excuse since sectors have floor and ceiling height values. Projectiles check height to determine collision. Walls, floors, and ceilings check height to determine collision. Just because the sectors and monsters can't overlap doesn't mean it's not 3D.

Do you think Xevious is fricking 3D because you can shoot planes in the air and drop bombs on guns on the ground?

    It's math. It doesn't make it 3D

If I use Hammer to make a Source game map that's just a flat plane is the game not 3D anymore?

    projectiles have full 3d collision
the only part of the engine that is fully 2d is object-to-object collision (ie: infinite height)

If doom is 3d then why do shots below an imps feet or above its head still hit it?

Auto aim because the player cannot aim the gun up or down.

autoaim because you can't manually aim up or down.
You can still shoot projectiles like a rocket above enemies if you step back far enough to not trigger the autoaim.

iirc the rocket's explosion itself has infinite height

Yeah, but the projectile itself does not.

If Super Mario Bros. (NES) isn't 3D then how can you jump over enemies?

People only say it's 2D because of how the maps work. The third dimension absolutely has an effect on gameplay, otherwise you'd be able to walk off a ledge and walk back onto it. Height matters.

It's 3d in the sense that there are literally 3 dimensions that are tracked by the game, it qualifying as a simulation of an actual 3d space is another question.

    Doom is 3D.
    >B-but you can't walk over monsters' heads
Less calculations were used only for performance. Heretic uses the same engine and you can actually walk over and under monsters.
