        Are you retarded?
You have no awareness of ram usage.
You think there is a fixed "vram" amount and a fixed "ram" amount on the consoles? That's a legacy PC thing, you're trying to apply to consoles where it doesn't apply.
By that logic Series X has 7 GB of RAM and 7GB of video memory
        It's retarded

Reminder that the PS4 had only 5GB total (or as you would put it, 2.5GB RAM and 2.5GB of video memory). While on PC you needed GPUs with multiple GBs and at least 8GB of system memory to run the games properly

Let me remind you about Metro Exodus on the Series S. It has always on FULLY ray traced lighting (probably the only RT that actually impacts a whole game and not just a few meme reflections) AND 60 FPS. On the Series S. In return it runs dynamic sub 1080p for the entire game and around 512p at some busy areas. The devs had balls for sure. If they dropped just the 60fps req it would have been perfectly fine.

        >many other devs have also said it. like metro exodus devs
it must be running at 120 fps on PS5 and SeX then huh

It is actually dynamic sub 1440p 60fps RT (worst is sub 1300p), on SeX/PS5. Really makes you think.

Just because it's inferior to dedicated memory doesn't mean it's bad. This isn't the 20th century anymore. Modern CPU and GPU can now easily share the same memory pool. AMD APU series do exactly that for those who want high power efficiency and low cost PC with decent gaming capability. Gaming should be cheap because technology has advanced tremendously.

          You must be retarded.
VRAM usage is scalable. Whatever resolution the game is running at on Series X, the Series S will be running at a proportionally lower resolution.
And if a developer is lazy and can't be bothered to optimize, they can just turn down texture quality.

This is just embarrassing at this point.

Ok. Say it just uses 2 gb vram. That leaves 6 gb for games. Series X has at least 4 more gb to work with.

I'll try to explain it in such a way that even you can understand.
Let's say there is a game running at 1440p on Series X. It is consuming a certain amount of vram at that resolution. Now if you lower the resolution to say, 900p, suddenly the vram consumption goes much lower.
Let's say there is a game running with medium textures on Series X. It is consuming a certain amount of vram at that setting. Now if you lower the setting to say, low quality, suddenly the vram usage goes much lower.

You are very angry. Please take your meds next time. Fuckhead.

The CPU is the same. This is why Gotham Knights runs like ass on the big consoles. This is why Plague Tale is 1440p30fps on the big consoles and 1080p30 on the Series S. Because you fell for the memes. Newsflash: it seems nextgen games are CPU bound and not GPU bound first and foremost. Every console is fucked equally as they have the same CPU. Don't feel bad, most people ate it (including me).

What you describe is nonsense and not where the cuts are actually made. I don't know if you are serious or just wanted to mention something that affects gameplay to make the S look worse. The Series S has a better CPU than the PS5. Game logic is not affected. The cuts are made on the fidelity side. Remove RT, only 30fps etc. You won't see a smaller city or less content, makes no sense.

I was console only up until PS4 Pro, but the actions of Sony and Microsoft before that has made the decision for me, fuck PS5 and the Xbox S/X. PC all the way for me and if you can, I'd recommend dropping consoles and just going PC until consoles remember what their selling point was in the first place.

Consoles, used to be about being able to boot up a game instantly, exclusives, decently priced, cheap game pads the actual system being priced usually lower than a PC.

It's fucking sad. Flightsticks for PC in the 90s-00s could range $20-80 if you just wanted a good stick or full feature HOTAS.
And then a NES controller was five bucks. Both were recognized as solid devices.

Now this fucking PC flight stick, the Extreme 3D Pro, has been sold for fucking ever and is still rock solid at only $35.
You could go with a $300 HOTAS and that too would unironically be a solid buy for an enthusiast.
Meanwhile a console controller is $70 minimum and the $150+ ones are extra flimsy garbage without any real reason as to why they're >2x the price yet 0.1x the build quality. Fucking things fall apart like toilet paper.

You can still buy cheap controllers, but they're almost all terrible unless you choose simple product like some Hori stuff that doesn't have analog sticks.
And the official controllers all use potentiometers that are no good for video games because of the drifting problem, but apparently no company gives a shit, it's like the factory of these damn potentiometers have the pictures of the CEOs of every major company fucking kids and are blackmailing them because it's the only explanation I can see for why the fucking retards keep insisting on a failed technology even though people are going to court against them.

          fuck of

I'll try to explain it in such a way that even you can understand.
Let's say there is a game running at 1440p on Series X. It is consuming a certain amount of vram at that resolution. Now if you lower the resolution to say, 900p, suddenly the vram consumption goes much lower.
Let's say there is a game running with medium textures on Series X. It is consuming a certain amount of vram at that setting. Now if you lower the setting to say, low quality, suddenly the vram usage goes much lower.

You are very angry. Please take your meds next time. Fuckhead.

No one is talking about textures or graphics. A 4-5 gb ram (NOT VRAM) console cant run games that need 10 gb ram. Its simple logic that you are not getting.

I really don't know how else to explain it to you.
If a game is consuming 14 GB of memory on Series X, you can scale that down to 8 GB on Series S by lowering the resolution and/or texture quality.

I agree that the Series S doesn't really serve much of a purpose, but at the same time this argument that its 'holding back' games sounds like little more than MUH GRAFICS bickering. The main issue with most big games these days is that they prioritize everything other than making fun games. You don't need 8GB of RAM for that.

Indie Dev here. My company literally had to delay our game by nearly 5 months trying to get it working on Series S. It's a legit nightmare. We ended up having to remove so many features that in the end WE DITCHED XBOX all together and stuck just to PC, Sony, and Switch. Microsoft is LOSING customers over the Series S.

The issue was multifold. The GPU is inherently weaker. It was basically impossible to hit even 30fps at 1080p. We were at one point having to look at running the game at 720p or lower and scaling up.

Ok try booting up a game at max graphics settings and check the ram usage. then drop them to minimum then check again
Left is uncharted 4 at min graphics and right is at max graphics. No change in ram usage.
If a game needs a certain amount of ram to run it cant run on a system that doesnt have it.

That's retarded. I'm pretty sure lowering the graphics settings doesn't affect the pre-decompressed texture and sound data that are loaded into the RAM for most games. Especially in games where you don't need to restart the game after changing the quality settings. The dev however could easily replace the asset files in the hard drive with the more compressed ones, or tweak the game codes to store more tightly compressed assets into the RAM, which would definitely reduce the RAM usage.

not the guy you're replying to but you're absolutely retarded
Uncharted 4 in that picture consumes more ram than THE ENTIRETY OF THE PS4 MEMORY
Holy shit what a fucking numbskull. PS4 only has 5GB total available for games.

And you keep talking about muh ram muh ram. How can you not understand that consoles are consoles and they have unified memory? Their memory management is not the same as PCs. They're not split into vram and ram holy shit.
    Unbelievable

This. Uncharted 4 on PS4 has more compressed asset data than the PC port and ergo uses less RAM.

Games use a trivial amount of memory on actual data structures compared to the amount used for textures and audio. The people complaining about the series S are all idiot texture artists who don’t want to downscale their massive 4k textures, which would allow the game that runs on the series X to easily run on the SeS at a reduced resolution. It should also be obvious that all of these games are crossgen and the engines they’re using aren’t actually designed to take advantage of the RDNA2 featureset that the series S has, things like Sampler Feedback Streaming cut down on RAM usage by a huge amount, and the previous gen’s slow transfer rate meant that games would load tons of unnecessary shit into RAM just to have it available rather than load and unload on the fly as needed.

I fucking don't get why modern devs don't bother using smaller textures. PS2 could render ample details with only 4MB of VRAM and 32MB of working RAM. The 360 only had 512MB of unified RAM and it ran Crysis. What do you need gigantic textures for?

The Xbox Series S is comparable in its hardware to the Xbox Series X, similar to how the Xbox One S relates to the Xbox One X, but has less processing power. While it runs the same CPU with slightly slower clock frequencies, it uses a slower GPU, a custom RDNA2 with 20 CUs at 1.55 GHz for 4 TFLOPS, compared to 12 TFLOPS of the Series X. It ships with 10 GB of RAM, with 8 GB running at 224GB/s primarily to be used with the graphics system and the other 2 GB at 56 GB/s to be used for the other computing functions, and a 512 GB SSD storage unit with a raw input/output throughput of 2.4 GB/s.
